Came in for lunch on fourth of July at 1, place was fairly empty. Was originally concerned as outside appearance was fairly drab, very hole in the wall-esque but food was amazing. We got the mixed fajita platter and the ribeye+cheese enchilada combo and both were very tender and flavorful. Chips came with 2 different salsas that I loved. If I understood correctly the name is a location in Mexico northwest of Mexico City known for a temple, pyramid and ruins. So finally we had our chance to go and we went to the original location (but they have 4 total) The restaurant is in an older looking small strip mall and not much curb appeal but like they say "the proof is in the pudding" and the food is the reason to go here. I ordered chicken flautas and they were great. Looked hand rolled with thin tortillas and fried to perfection, light and crunchy. My GF ordered fajita quesadillas and they were really good and had a lot of fajita meat, they did not skimp on the meat. I ordered the Angel dinner that consists of chicken flauta, chicken enchilada and chicken quesadilla with rice and beans. Everything was very good. Fresh and tasty and I even had leftovers. Contender for best bonafide Tex-Mex spot in Houston. This specific location was recommended by a friend, and I'm glad we made the drive. To get to the strip mall that houses the restaurant, you'll drive past barbacoa joints, gas stations with signs in all Spanish lettering, and an assortment of food trucks and grocery stores. The place itself is homey with friendly staff and a TV playing the local news. Be warned: the portions here are no joke. My "La Silvia" mixed plate literally came on a serving platter and it was fantastic, both in terms of quality and quantity (at $15). The cheese enchilada was bomb, with a tangy and earthy red sauce and copious amounts of sharp yellow cheese. The beef fajita taco was probably my least favorite item of the bunch, but it was still good; the warm hand-made tortilla was thick and dense. The crispy shredded chicken taco surprised me, as I didn't expect it to be as incredible as it was. When I bit into the crunchy casing, the shredded chicken released an absolute torrent of juice. Super well-seasoned too. Even the refried beans were eye-poppingly flavorful, I'm guessing due to the addition of lard. I trusted you yelp and you let me down. 4 stars, really? seriously? What did I miss that you other yelpers saw? I was in an unfamiliar part of town at a meeting. I needed to grab lunch before heading back to work. My yelp phone app told me that Teotihuacan had 4 stars on plenty of reviews. The enchiladas looked like they were coasted in mustard, it was such a strange color. So, what I found strange was the blandness of the food. The rice was bland, the beans were bland, and the enchiladas were so bland that I decided not to even finish them. Like the other review said, the outside is crummy but the food is authentic tex-mex. Some of the best you will find in Houston. We've had Breakfast here many times and it hits the spot EVERY time. We live in NW Houston but we will gladly make the journey. The Juevos Rancheros are delicious the Juevos a la Mexicana are just as good, if not better (Two eggs scrambled with tomatoes, onions and fresh jalapeños peppers). The tortillas are home made and the salsa has a nice kick to it (great for 'cruda'). The green salsa is especially pica. This restaurant is typical to me. A rather small Mexican restaurant in a low rent neighborhood location that serves good food. Upon arriving for dinner I noticed that parking was very limited in this small strip center. Located next door to a washateria on one side and the other side an auto business that had many no parking signs in front of it left few options to park my ride. Finally someone at the washateria left and I snagged their spot. Upon entering the restaurant I noticed it was full with just one table open in the back which is where the waitress seated me. The menu was rather large with many choices. I noticed that most of the dishes were a little more expensive than I expected for a place like this (small Mexican restaurant in a inexpensive looking location with an interior that consists of just one room with tables and chairs in it). I decided on the chicken fajitas with flour tortillas. The chips and salsa's arrived. The chips and red salsa I enjoyed. The green salsa had too much kick for me. Most of the times that I have eaten green salsa it is mild and smooth. This one had some pep to it. The fajitas arrived about 5 minutes later. It was a large plate of food. Very generous with the chicken and onions. The 3 flour tortillas were as big as washcloths. I thought the meal was good. My service was good too. It wasn't easy to rate this meal and I finally decided on a 3. I had a good meal here. I would return if I am back in this part of town which is rare for me. Like I began this review, I think it was a good meal but not any better than several other neighborhood Mexican restaurants that I have eaten at. We have been eating at "Teo's" for about 8 years now, and it is still our favorite place in Houston (and The Woodlands) for great Tex-Mex food! It's a little hole-in-the-wall place in a ratty strip center on Irvington Blvd., a few miles north of downtown Houston. I would have never thought to try it, because there are literally hundreds of Mexican restaurants in Houston that "look" better. But looks aren't everything. When a co-worker suggested we go there for lunch one day over 8 years ago, I was hooked! The food is great! Traditional Tex-Mex. My favorite is the La Sylvia plate - a combination plate with a cheese enchilada, a crispy chicken taco, a flour tortilla filled with the best beef fajita meat in town, and rice and beans (I love their borracho beans). The fajita meat has a smoky, grilled flavor, is tender and the portions are very generous! The flour tortillas are hand-made and light and delicious! I think the freshness of the ingredients and the perfect seasoning of everything is what makes this place so special - the rice, the borracho beans, the shredded chicken - the fajitas - it is all so, so good! As Jodi B. said, the people there are so nice - they welcome us with a smile, and remember what we always order. At lunch-time during the week, the place is full of downtown Houston workers, but on the weekends, it's mostly the local neighborhood folks (predominately Hispanic - a good indication of the authenticity of the food.) We usually go on Saturday or Sunday afternoons and it's never crowded at that time. Teo's has received some well -deserved recognition in the past couple of years - and opened another Teotihuacan Mexican Cafe a few miles away on Airline Dr. But the original will always be #1 in the hearts of me and my husband.
