This place seems to have a Terminal illness. There are different symptoms every time, so stay alert! Once, when I was at the Justice show here (great show and amazing pulsing dancefloor), Terminal 5 got a new, natural makeover. A waterfall. Yes, folks, apparently the second floor bathrooms had sprung a leak--cause a huge river started flowing towards the stage, cascading over the balcony to the large bar on the ground floor below. But really dramatically, i.e. enough to splash you with drops even standing five feet away! It was great fun, although probably for the first people to be terminally baptized. Another time, none of the taps were working at the bars on the second and third floors. Annoying. Then there are chronic diseases, like the inability to see anything unless you're standing in the first one or two rows of people lining the balconies. Poor sightlines in general. Sorry Terminal 5, but I probably won't make it to your funeral bash. read more

Great venue. I saw Passion pit here back in January. I'm sure how I feel about Terminal 5 is greatly influenced by how awesome Passion pit was that night. The line moved faster than I thought, the restrooms were clean - the attendant is really nice. There's a cool smoking area on the roof top. On the 1st floor, the bar is located on the opposite side of the room from the stage. It's on a higher level from the ground so if you're standing by one of the railings in front of the bar, you get to watch the show(with out people's heads blocking the view) and be near the drinks! Speaking of drinks, they weren't all that expensive either - kettle/tonic was about 10$? Stella draft was 5$, I believe. Not bad. Also, it was super easy to get there from Penn station. I think the cab cost me about 6$ each way. Went with a friend so we split the cab fee! The ticket was also only 25$. Amazing deal!!!! read more

Came for a Massive Attack concert in May 2010, first time. Its an enormous venue with basically no seats, no frills, an industrial warehouse located in an industrial area. Three floors to choose from; the first in front of the stage, and the two mezzanine levels where you can peer down on the center of the first floor and get higher views of the stage. There's a bar and lounge area away from the performing area on the first mezzanine level (2nd floor). I came a little early and we were let up to the roof where a small menu of bbq and a bar was available. I took a balcony spot on the 1st mezzanine level, looking directly down to one side of the stage. Its a great view, and you can see the artists fairly close-up. Directly across from here on the other side of the mezzanine looked like a VIP section with high tables and chairs. The show was great. I thought the acoustics were excellent for Massive Attack's sound. Without seeing them elsewhere doing a similar show, I can't comment on whether Terminal 5 improved or detracted from their show. It was certainly loud enough to hear even if you weren't in the performance area. The major disadvantage of this venue, as with any venue without seats, is you're not going to be able to keep a good spot if you need to leave it, unless you're with people. Also, not a lot of bathrooms and traffic management for it was poor. read more

I'm not sure why so many people don't like this venue -- I thought it was awesome! Quick: -Three levels, with a rooftop area, that are accessible to everyone. -Couches and space to sit on upper levels (if that's what you want to do at a concert...), and a bar on each level (including the roof). -No drink limit! And shots! Drinks aren't too pricey. -Sound system was pretty good. I'm not an expert, but I thought it sounded how it should! -Bartenders were average -- didn't have a terrible experience with them like other Yelpers, but nothing special either. -Didn't get a full pat down at all - just the usual glance in the bag and ID check. Too bad Terminal 5 couldn't live up to that standard... With two of our all time favorite bands playing together, Shea D and I packed some granola bars, flares, water, and other long-term survival gear for the trek to 56th and 12th ave. This being my first time to Terminal 5, I was glad there was a huge crowd already gathered outside, otherwise I would never have noticed this nondescript concert hall. There isn't even a marquee displaying band names!! Once we got inside, we scoped out the digs and quickly found one of the many bars on each of Terminal 5's 3 levels. After handing over $7 for a cup of beer (God, I HATE doing that...), we found ourselves a little nook on the ground level and so began our night of favorite band bliss. While the bands rocked, the sound system didn't. Sure it was loud, but the bass was a little low (no heart pounding beats here), and the lead singers were nearly inaudible over the instruments. The layout is pretty terrible. Unless you get there in time to squeeze into the small space in front of the stage, you risk being way off to the side where you can't see the stage (but oh! you can always utilize the tvs set up to alleviate that problem? NO THANKS!!!), or standing behind one of many pillars holding the upstairs area, well, up. Even upstairs was lame. While spacious, the viewing area certainly wasn't. And since the entire left side on both upper levels is reserved for VIP, the crowds are intense on the right side. I noticed there were hardly any VIP's anyway, so this could easily be consolidated into one level, freeing up more general space for everyone else. Unless your favorite band is playing this venue, I'd steer clear. read more

So I've been here twice and find it quite difficult to understand why it's only averaging 3 stars. I think it's an awesome place to see live music. I went to see the Black Eyed Peas here not too long ago and then a couple weeks ago went to see Kid Cudi and Aloe Blacc here. At the BEP show I was front and center rocking out the whole time, so really there was no possible way to complain about where I was. For the Cudi show however I was all over the place. I got a chance to check out the entire space: all the different floors including the roof. The place is huge, and I've heard it can accomodate 5000 people. That's pretty impressive because it doesn't look that big from the outside. It has three floors (I think) and a rooftop lounge but you can't watch the show from up there. It would be cool if you could. It does get quite crowded and it's kind of hard to get drinks because of it, which is why I'm not giving it 4 stars, but I think it's an awesome place to see a show. Visited Terminal 5 for a show last week: Classixx, Dragonette, and Presets. I don't go to many concerts, so this was my first time here. I like the location, but that's because I live like ten blocks away. For a smaller show, it's easy to get and stay close to the stage, so you can have a really intimate experience with a band. Or you can go hang out in the back at the bar, enjoying drinks and seeing the whole stage from a little distance. I enjoyed myself. The only thing I didn't care for was the cash-only rule -- I thought we decided we'd moved on from that. Oh, and there isn't a coat check, so travel as lightly as possible! read more

A popular Venue that a lot of Artists play when they pass through NY. I am torn because every show I have seen here has been exceptional but The Venue itself has some negative aspects to it. I will always get here early and grab a spot on the railing; either on the second or third floor. Preferably the second close to the side of the stage. There is a bar on every floor so it's pretty easy to get a drink. When I was on the floor seeing the stage was difficult. I also prefer the sound quality on the upper levels. At Terminal 5 I have seen The Dead Weather, Vampire Weekend, Citizen Cope, The Black Keys (Lee Fields opened), Pete Yorn (Ben Kweller opened). All of the shows were Sick. If you are a fan of music it would be hard to not end up seeing a show here because so many solid acts come through here. read more

Came here to see deadmau5 a few years back. The venue was big (but a bit on the narrow side I thought), but definitely packed for this show. The upper levels were nice because you could look down on the crowd. I noticed people complained about the location, but I didn't find it too bad, given that we had a car. We got to the venue reasonably early, a few hours before the headliners were even scheduled to start so that we could avoid a huge line at coat check. No such luck. The long line barely moved--they should really think about coming up with a more efficient coat check system. I will say that because the venue is huge, there was plenty of room to dance, and the multiple bars made getting a drink less painful than it could have been. The sound system was awesome and in general, we had a great time. Bottom line, you'd be better off going coat-less or taking a chance and stashing your coat (discretely) somewhere. read more

It's a large venue. It use to be Exit (dance club) than Black NYC, than back to Exit. If you've been to Exit during its hayday, you know how big this place is - three floors. The main floor is the largest and bars in the back and front. The second floor has one smaller bar towards the back and a large one near the front (near the stage). All bartenders are nice and attentive, even though it can get crazy and very crowded at certain times Pros: Great sound system Large space Decent bar service for such a big venue Cons: Inconvenient location (far from public transportation) Nearly impossible to view the stage if you're on the main floor, especially if you're petite!! read more

For some reason the past like 5 concerts in NY I have gone to were at Terminal 5. Most recent were 2 Florence and the Machine shows. If this review was based on her performance alone it would be 5 stars; however I will stick to the venue itself.. .3 stars. If you do not make it early enough to solidify a spot in the front by the barrier or any of the levels - you will not see the show. Day 1 - I waited and I was up against the barrier. Great show/view. Awesome experience. Finding the Meet and Greet was a different type of experience. I asked about 4 different security guards (2 being at the front door) where I was to go, both pointed me in the wrong direction. Eventually I found a random security guard near the stage who told me where to go. After the Meet and Greet, which was during the opening acts (did i say it was an awesome experience, she rocks).... my friend and I were let loose into the already packed Terminal 5. We tried to stand in the back of the venue. Show started = view sucked. There were a few pot smokers. That would be fun, but I had no pot or interest. We went upstairs, same deal. We moved and stood on couches. Nothing worked. My advice - wait outside to get into the front and arrive early. Sucks to wait, but worth it. If just hanging by the bar is your idea of fun at a concert or watching it on their crummy TVs upstairs, then you should be fine arriving late. read more

Came here for Frank Ocean. Had to wait for almost 2 hours before the line started moving. The venue itself was just OK. Nothing extravagant, but I guess you don't really need much for Franky. I was fairly close, but I imagine everyone else behind me not being able to see Frank that well. I guess I would come back, if I had to. I've been here several times for NYC shows, as pretty much any well-known band or artist (within their respective genre of music) will stop by here for a show before or after Brooklyn, Boston or Philly. I really don't like the location in Hell's Kitchen. 56th between 11th and 12th? Who lives out there?! But that's not gonna change anytime soon so we might as well get used to it. On to the actual venue: it's your standard set up of 3 floors with an open standing room in front of the stage. It can be really difficult to get a good spot without being blocked by hoards of people or a pole. Especially if you didn't come by the time the opener started. Pretty expensive well drinks and beer at the bar but I haven't found it as difficult as others to get a drink at the bar. You just have to be a little aggressive ;) The audio quality has been a bit hit-or-miss. When I saw RAC here in October, it was pretty crappy. Like the subwoofers weren't properly calibrated or something. But when I saw BANKS in September, I was blown away and that was only helped by the way her music sounded on stage. Anyways, you pretty much can't avoid coming here unless you want to trek to Brooklyn for a show for a big band/not pay the exorbitant fees for when the band blows up enough to play MSG. So just go and have fun! There are worse places. read more

And if you want get a good spot on the blacony... you have to get there uber early... wait... get your spot.... wait some more... then finally the show has started... and by that time you've probably have been there for at least an hour and half before the show. Sound quality is great... BUT....... The last time I was here was to see Coheed and Cambria on the 1st and 2nd days during the CMJ... and it was H E L L A P A C K E D ! ! ! If you didn't want to be stampede over... being on the floor was not the choice... all the balconies were beyond packed~! Enjoy though the show was great... and the other times were for M.I.A and Mika... I still wasn't as satisfied because of how big the venue is... When a place this big... you have to deal with the random rudeness of others... can't get a good view.... and the overall experience isn't worth the time and money to come here. I only come here... if and only if... the band I absolutely love is playing here and not anywhere else where I can get a different ticket for. read more

If you're into music you will automatically go there at some stage. A lot of indie acts that have reached a certain level of popularity will do T5 when in NYC. Little Dragon, Justice, Deadmau5, ... they will play there. Because I like this kind of music this is clearly part of the music tour for me. The venue itself is a multi-level where you may have around 2 to 3,000 people I guess. They have VIP access on the balconies including one right in front of the stage which is good but always best to jump right into the crowd. Nothing very special about the venue only acoustic isn't very good. read more

I saw Lake Street Dive here in November who I had been wanting to see for the better half of a year. The band was great and venue was well run for the most part. However the space was not ideal for the "intimate venue" you might be looking for in a non-arena setting. I was in the lower lever "pit" but closer to the back (while not as far bad as the bar area). I expect the usual loud chit chat from disinterested plus ones or people who had one too many in the pre-game between the doors and headliner. However, I found it almost difficult to hear not only the lead singer but even the music despite the presence of huge speakers. I'm not musical expert but I've been to a good amount of concerts and I would guess the acoustics are just way off or something. Which is a shame since they have a pretty good line up of bands coming through. read more

So far, I've been to Terminal 5 twice. The first time was to see M.I.A. in 2007 and that show was nothing short of incredible. But this past Saturday I had the pleasure of taking part in something extremely mind blowing. I went to the Crystal Castles show and I had a great time. I touched Alice multiple times, got sweaty and dirty, and loved every minute of it. The best part about this place is that every song played sounds like it does on the album. It hits you in your chest, but at the same time it's not deafening. One of the main things I'm not too fond of is the price of beer. I ended up paying $40 for 5 beers. I didn't have time to get trashed before I went in, which was a huge mistake, so I had to suck it up and buy Stella inside. If I recall correctly from the M.I.A. concert, the prices of mixed drinks are $8-10, and they're not strong. Although this has nothing to do with my personal preference, because I'm the type of person to stand in the center of the crowd, if not at the foot of the stage. But if you plan on watching a band from the 2nd, or 3rd floors, you might want to get your spot early, otherwise, you'll be looking around someone's head for the entire show. read more

Went to Terminal 5 to see Miike Snow on a weekday and had a blast. This was my first time here so I didn't really know what to expect but ended up having one hell of a night. Upon walking in your greeted with the main floor which is quite spacious with bars set around the perimeter. The top two floors of the venue consist of a mezzanine and balcony overlooking the main floor and stage. To top it off the venue also has great lighting and effects making it a perfect place for live music. The only negative I can think of is that it's a bit far from everything. There's no real good place to grab a drink or meet up beforehand. All in all Had a wonderful time, and met some great people. Will definitely be coming back soon. I went to see Erasure again the next night and I WAS READY! I came with nothing but the stuff in my pockets and no coat (thanks to other reviews) and I was there 2 hours early. I staked a claim in the front row on the ground floor and made holding deals with my neighbors. This worked out very well. It was nothing but me and Andy Bell and I was sooooo happy. The bartender took a shine to me and had a nice strong pour. I expected drinks to be pricey, but they were well poured, and fast. I had a much better time, but I will still not go to Terminal 5 again unless it is the ONLY way on earth I can see Erasure. I would consider going to Boston or DC to another venue first. Unless you're there hours before showtime and plant yourself permanently to the balcony railing, don't expect to see the stage. The loud, live acoustics and recurring feedback don't make up for the lousy, obstructed sightlines. The place does book some top-grade performers, which is the only reason to go. But the nonexistent views and poor sound can (and likely will) wreck the experience. read more

Without a doubt NYC's worst concert venue. - Terrible acoustics. Just terrible. - Extremely limited visibility from the upper levels. Unless you are standing against the railing, or are really tall, you probably won't be able to see anything. - Extremely limited visibility from the lower level. Much of the venue's capacity is from the standing areas surrounding the central, open part of the floor. If you are outside this area, you're likely standing behind a pillar or just have too many people in front of you to see anything. - It is really, really far from everything. Unless you live in Hell's Kitchen (why would you?), you're probably walking at least 15 minutes from the subway. Pretty much nothing else out there to do either before or after the show. I inevitably will go here a couple times a year because I want to see certain bands play, but I truly hope we find a new standard for medium sized venues, which isn't likely to happen anytime soon given Bowery Presents' dominance in the city. read more

For some reason, every group or singer that I've seen in the last five years has done a show here. At this point, I've had enough of this venue, but depending who's playing, I might bite my tongue and go. I would consider this place at least adequate, but I've had MUCH better experiences at different venues. I can't complain much (but I might and will) since the ticket prices are always reasonable. I always wind up going to the second story balcony to enjoy the show for two reasons. 1. The off-chance that I might get a view of the stage. 2. Room to dance (depending on the show). 3. Somewhere to sit when I get fatigued. These reasons are good to factor in when you have friends who are late and not as cut-throat as you are. The one time I went to see Jónsi was almost a nightmare. I went a few hours early because I went solo and wanted a good spot in the pit. They let you queue up on the roof of the venue without much direction. As they led the line inside, about 100 people CUT AHEAD OF ME. The fact that I got a perfect view from the balcony (and that it was Jónsi) made up for the snafu. If I know someone is going to play somewhere else eventually, I would rather pass on this venue. read more

The concert hall is pretty large fit in NYC. It has three levels and a bar on each. The drinks I hear are pretty expensive as I didn't get anything to drink here. For exp. a guy behind me had a long island iced tea which was $15!? insane! I understand it's NYC but $15, WOW! I decided to give the venue three stars instead of two they do book great performers but they def. need to work on their sound system. It becomes very distorted in there esp for EDM events. I attended HARD Fest NYC and 16 Bit's set was nothing but noise the sound system was that bad I could only make out one song he played since the bass didn't distort it out. Also have better security on your top levels too. People were taking their drinks and dumping them on people down below on the first level. read more

I should've listened this place only got 3 stars because of The Weeknd So I went to Terminal 5 last night 10/26 to see my favvvvvvv artist The Weeknd and as much as i love him, this place did ruin the experience for me. I arrived fairly early 6hrs in advance to be exact because I know how ridiculous his shows get and the line situation was horrible. After being line up outside we were let in around 7 to where I believe was the rooftop area to another line on the steps...yeah steps..smh....there was only two ppl organizing this supposed line, ppl skipping confusion it was just really exhausting. SO after waiting on steps for an hour we were let back down the stairs to the stage. I made my way to the front but it annoyed me that ppl that came way after me were in the front as well but anyways. It was said that the show starts at 9 but anyone that's been to his shows know that means an opening act goes on for an hour then he comes out. The DJ was good but it was so packed you could barely move without feeling like you're humping the person next to you. Then finally Abel came out 10:15 on the dot and turned it OUT. The performance was nothing short of amazing BUT the sound was horrible, I completely understand that us Weeknd fans can't help but sing every word of his songs but again I've seen him live before in other venues under the same circumstances and still heard him... i was behind one person from the stage and had to struggle to hear him. Needless to say everything leading up to the performance slightly ruined the experience BUT i love me some Abel so if he came back to T5 I would but under NO other circumstance would I ever go back. Not the place you go for a sold out show or for an artist you really like. read more

Worst sound system in all of New York City. Owned by the Bowery Presents group, who really need to bring Terminal 5 up to par with their other venues. T5 also has the worst visibility of any NYC club - long, narrow, lots of obstacles, columns, etc. The already crappy sound is even crappier in the back, and upstairs. Unfortunately the word hasn't circulated amongst artists and T5 books some fabulous shows. But after a few of them I realized it's just not worth the long hike and the average prices for SUCH a below-average setup. If you're just on a date and/or hoping to get laid? No probs, it's so squashed you'll get nice & cozy with whoever brung ya and all else too...hopefully only the friendlies. But if you're there because you want to hear music? And see performers? Terminal 5's setup truly sucketh major portions of hindquarters. read more

And you cannot get a refund either, as they don't participate in the 72 hour refund program that other venues offer through Ticketmaster. Terminal 5 is kind of in the middle of nowhere. But luckily I was already wasties when I walked there from the subway, so time was altered. It was also a blurry exit. Passed a lot of car dealerships on the cab ride home. Whatevz. I have to say that I'm a HUGE fan of the three levels. You can ignore opening bands you don't really like by grabbing a beer and standing or sitting in a drastically less crowded area. Ditch the ground floor until you want to be there. Granted, I'm not one of those people anymore who needs to be front row so he gets there 2 hours early and waits and stays there through the opening bands. I'm fine with eventually making my way to the ground floor and being close enough without getting trampled. read more

I was here on 3/13 for the Dropkick Murphys concert. This was my first time seeing DKM so I was already insanely excited. Terminal 5 is within walking distance to my office so it was great to just head to a bar for pre-game and then right to the venue. The sound quality was good. It was loud but I didn't continue to have ringing ears the next day, which usually happens. I don't mind, but it can get annoying. A lot of reviews are saying this venue is in the "middle of nowhere". Personally, I disagree as I find it very easy to get to. However, if you're going by subway you will need to walk a few blocks to get to the nearest metro station. For me, that's not an issue and I wouldn't lower my rating over it. read more

I saw Jimmy Eat World on the Clarity x10 tour just a few nights ago.. By saying that, I think it gets a star from the get go. The venue is actually pretty good - 2 balconies for viewing if you so desire.. and a fairly large floor as well - but even if you're in the back of the floor, you aren't far away at all. The sound is pretty darn good, which really is what makes or breaks a venue for me. It's not great, but better than most joints. Beer prices were decent for a music venue, something like $6. Totally worth it. I'm taking off a point, however, because of the kid in front of me dancing with his girlfriend - and when I say dancing, I really mean bopping around with no beat or sense of tempo. I know this isn't the venues fault, but I don't think I could really give it 4 stars anyway. All in all, good venue.. far from anything though. read more

Whoever brought us miller light instead of amstel should be fired. Just kidding I'm not that harsh, but consider this a warning. Chris: The venue production staff were all very friendly and helpful. Due to an unfortunate circumstance we only had a 4 minute sound check and I was very impressed with the sound and monitor crew accomplished with such limited time. However, half way through the set there was some major feedback and instead of dealing with the situation they just shut off the monitors. It's very frustrating from a band's perspective to not hear what you sound like and your vocals at all. Jeff: The club had the appearance of standing in the belly of a boat, or standing on the floor of a 3-story prison. Where's your style NY? I tried for the fifth and final time to enjoy a show at this place. I see a lot of live music in NYC, and this is by far the worst venue I've ever been to (in NYC or anywhere, for that matter). The only words I can use to describe it are uncomfortable and frustrating. The problem is that they oversell it based on the square footage...but much of that space is in areas where you can't really see the stage or enjoy the sound. If you're not camped out front and center, you can't see and the sound sucks. And if you are in a good spot but you leave it to get beer or use the bathroom, the crowd closes up and you literally cannot get back to where you were, meaning you're relegated to the fringe areas for the duration of the show. If you don't go to many concerts or don't care about seeing or hearing the band, go for it. Otherwise don't bother. I've given this place too many chances and it's always awful. Came here for my first time last Wednesday for a Mutemath concert and had a blast. I personally liked the venue. We didn't wait in line long outside, and the bathrooms inside were fairly clean. We stayed mainly in the pit, but I did see that there were at least 3 floors above us where I assume you pay extra and can stand there but I enjoyed the ground floor. The bar is in the way back facing the stage. The drinks were pretty pricey but it's New York duh. I didn't have to wait too long to go to the bathroom or get a drink which was all I cared about. There's also a side bar near the bathrooms as well but the line there seemed to be extra long. read more
