I never thought I would ever write a negative review about this place. I've stored my boat there…read moresince 2014. I've always had it stored over the winter and usually stored it there during the remainder of the year (in & out service, mostly in as we've taken in out less than 4 times a year on average. The motor has less than 35 hours on it and it's 10 years old). I usually work with Keith who is a super nice guy. I can't say the same about the owner. However, I had a not so pleasant experience with them recently. Last fall I dropped my boat off at their shop because it wouldn't start. I was told their mechanic spent a couple hours on it, could not find the problem. They told me the motor started (but didn't run well) but only when bypassing the ignition and wiring harness. I was told it was probably the harness and I'd have to take it to a Sylvan dealer. I was charged $200. I spent hours looking for a problem, a break in the wire, corrosion, etc. and didn't find anything. I contacted the closest dealer and since they don't stock the harness I had to pay for it in advance, about $425. After calling the Michigan (2 1/2 hours away) dealer I bought the boat from I decided to take it there. I was told it probably wasn't the harness since the boat is in almost new condition, only 30 hours on the motor. I took it there earlier this year. They found the issue in less than 10 minutes! It was the kill switch, a $30 part! They told me the motor ran very well. They checked everything over, repaired a few minor issues including replacing the horn. They charged me $385. I called the local dealer to inform them I didn't need the harness and I was charged a 20% restocking fee (approx. $85). So in total I incurred close to $700 for what turned out to be a $35 part!! I informed Keith and Steve of this and they offered $100 off winter storage! No apology! Absolutely ridiculous! Not only did they not find the simple issue, they told me it had to be the wiring harness. If I owned the shop I would have been embarrassed! I would have apologized , at minimum given a full refund or 50% off winter storage or maybe even winter storage on me! But not this place! I was a good customer for 10 years , spent thousands on storage , parts and some minor labor. Greed is a terrible thing. If this is how they treat a good customer of 10 years, I can only imagine how they're going to treat a new customer.

In addition to being ripped off $$$$ by Fays while our fairly new boat was being serviced for one…read morealarm code, Fays did additional damage to our boat by not running water on our jet engines while they tested it over the year+ that they had it in service. Our family nearly sank in Lake Michigan because water flooded the engine compartment as well as noxious fumes caused what we found to be a cracked carbon ring and melted resonator. In addition, our bilge pump was clogged with degree because they didn't not protect our boat while it was with them for more than a year. Bad combo. We could have all died, we lost two summers on our boat from their incompetence and they charged us thousands of dollars for parts and labor we did not agree to. It's been a nightmare to work with Fays Marina. Don't put yourself through it. We are still fighting them and I will not stop until they make it right.

Granted it was my first boat purchase and I could have asked them to check the engine, but I had good faith that they--the nice people selling me my first boat--had already made sure it wasn't a piece of crap. They knew the previous owner, so they knew the (lack of) maintenance that had been done on the boat...but I was the one who found out that the long block rusted through, started to take on water, and slowly destroyed the inside of the engine. During my first summer, I was stranded more than a dozen times and towed to shore. It was scary. 2 years later, after completely overhauling the inside and rebuilding the engine, the boat is back in business. But I had to take it somewhere else to get it there. If you buy from here, ask for work orders. Ask for engine inspections. Ask for everything you can't see with your own eyes.
