    everything bagel w/ lox spread
    Rachel N.

This place was....meh. To summarize, do not go here if you're looking for a real New York bagel. The bagel itself was not very flavorful, just tasted like normal bread. And the texture was just...wrong. It was bready (it had a bit of chew, but not nearly as much as an authentic NY bagel should have), and the crust was thin and lacked the classic bagel craggles. Honestly, almost all of the crunch from the crust came from toasting the bagel, not from boiling/baking it correctly. Also, I got an everything bagel, but one side was basically completely devoid of any seasoning at all. The ambiance of the place was so-so, it looks like a deli. Not really great seating options. The staff was friendly enough, but nothing remarkably good nor bad about the service.

I stopped early on Saturday morning for a plain bagel toasted with cream cheese($4.15). The bagel was good, and it had a large amount of cream cheese, which I liked. The place had a good crowd, but the service was fast.

I came here on a Saturday afternoon. I got a dozen bagels through the TGTG app. 5 blueberry, 3 cinnamon raisin, 3 egg, and 1 garlic bagel. The blueberry are definitely my favorite. They have a nice blueberry flavor and are light. The cinnamon raisin are my second favorite. A little denser but also good. Anyway, a solid bagel place.

This is the best bagel store in the neighborhood by far. They're a few blocks from me so I'm there (or getting delivery) at least once a week. My go-to is a toasted bacon egg and cheese with cheddar instead of American (American cheese is so bad, guys. Why do you subject yourselves to this trash?!) and tomato. And a small iced cold brew. They used to mess up my order sometimes (didn't use cheddar, forgot the tomato etc.) but now I clearly (and politely) explain all the things I want in the comments and I haven't had an issue since. The bagels are the best I've had in Brooklyn and freeze really, really well so I usually have a few handy for a quick breakfast. I also really enjoy their cold brew, although it's very, very pricey. Delivery guys are always nice and quick!

Great bagels. Fresh and delicous. Grab a cup of coffee with your bagel and you are good to go.

Some of the best bagels in Brooklyn. Service is quick and abrupt but what you would expect at a busy deli.

Great bagels with an awesome selection all day long. It isn't like some other bagel shops that run out in the evening.

Super but not as much texture as Bagel Hole. Parking is chaotic. Have a buddy wait in the car with the hazards on.

As far as the customer service goes I wish it was a bit better. The staff aren't the most pleasant. I do notice they speak more pleasantly to other customers that come in. Not sure if it's a culture thing or could they be discriminatory but it's a bit unsettling. Food: 3.8/5 I only order the poppy seed bagel and that's pretty tasty. Not to doughy although I do have them take out a good portion of the bread because I like it to be extremely thin. If you are in the neighborhood, you should pop in and buy something to show your respect. What you should buy is the herring. And specifically, if you happen to be lucky enough to stroll in during Holland Herring season in June/July, that is the herring to get. Even if you just had a giant meat based meal a couple doors down, you can still make room for one herring. Consider it the Jewish equivalent of surf and turf. Although one of my friends said visiting both LES icons was more akin to a "bang bang". Sometimes it's the small shops that make the biggest mark. This is certainly the case with R&D. The place is tiny, but the fish is mighty. I can't speak highly enough about the Holland Herring. So silky. So delicate. So much fun to eat. Held up by the tail, dragged through a mix of chopped onions and pickles, and lowered down into your awaiting mouth. These things are large. They are going to take a few good sized bites. Enjoy the contrast of textures and flavors. Tilting your head back to eat it almost demands that you close your eyes and savor every moment. Yes, the entire herring case is a marvel. While most folks will walk out of R&D with nova (what most people call lox, but is really cold smoked salmon), the real score is the sable and sturgeon. Or, if you are a salt lover, you can get legitimate belly lox here too. It satisfies the soul to see an appetizing store holding the line. Sure, you can put your smoked fish on a bagel or bialy with cream cheese. However, I submit that fish this good should really be enjoyed in its purest form. Maybe if you want to cut the salt, lay some on a thin piece of old world 100% rye bread. Not the squishy deli stuff, but the hard eastern European kind. Perhaps a dolop of sour cream. A few chives if feeling fancy. My old cantor used to love creamed herring with pickled onions on chunks of challah. If you go the herring route and it's not Holland Herring season, I fully endorse this approach. But don't sleep on the Holland Herring. Get one. Eat it on the bench outside or bring it across the street and eat it standing up in the park. I heard rumor that once upon a time folks would eat them right at the counter. That seems a little messy for my taste, but far be it from me to keep a herring lover from their delightful fishy morsels.

They clearly prioritize hygiene here. The interior is so spotless that it is pitiful!…read more On 6/20/26, I purchased food that I cannot get anywhere else: smoked trout mousse (relatively low in sodium), authentic pumpernickel bread (recommended for its comparatively low glycemic index), and in-house smoked Gaspe smoked salmon (relatively low in sodium).
