Our family eventually stopped seeing him after 3 years of being under his care. We went to him because it was hard to find doctors who spoke Spanish in our area at the time. I'll start with the worst. My mom used to be really concerned for her health. Over time we realized her concerns were signs of what she's now developed, diverticulitis and other digestive issues. She often came in with pain and explained her concerns. Dr. Castellanos would tell my mom that she was fine and to take ibuprofen. Any time she came in it was the same thing even though her symptoms progressed - continue to take ibuprofen. Eventually she told my mom she was too worried and was a bother. We finally stopped going to see him when she used the restroom and found blood in her stool. She developed ulcers in her throat and stomach that were very painful when eating. After we stopped going to see him we found out all of her symptoms were the beginning of diverticulitis. In 2009 she ended up going to the ER because she was heavily bleeding when she used the bathroom. A diverticula had burst open and it was discovered she has 3 total that had developed. She was taken to emergency surgery. She's suffered through diverticulitis ever since with multiple ER visits. Dr. Castellanos was negligent as a doctor when presented with symptoms. He could have referred her to a gastroenterologist but never did. We had HMO at the time and eventually switched to PPO but it was after dealing with him. For my own case, I developed gastro issues around 12 and realized I had sensitivity to certain foods that lead to a lot of gas and odd noises in my intestines. I felt shy about it as a kid but was worried because I didn't want to sit in class having those noises come from my intestines because well... it was awkward. My side of the classroom could hear my gas issues and I didn't understand what was causing it. When I told him he blew me off and told me to eat more fiber. I didn't bother more about it or ask because I was too ashamed to ask more. Years later I realized I had food sensitivities and that I need to be careful to avoid dairy. All of this to say - I would absolutely NEVER recommend anyone to see Dr Castallanos. My mom could have sued him for negligence but decided not to. Seeing him still in practice now and talking to family about health made me 20 years later have to go back to write this.

I've had panic attacks/anxiety for about 12 years and have taken propranolol and other anxiety medications for those 12 years. I started experiencing that "fluttering" sensation in my heart like I'm about to get a panic attack all the time recently and it was really messing up my life at work, unable to talk properly without sounding extremely nervous and unable to compose myself. I went to the office and asked for propranolol and he said that we had to do 2 things: do an ekg and put a holter (a heart monitor type thing) for a day. Ok, fine. So I did that, and I asked about the propranolol again and he said he had to go through those things first. Fine. I understand that propranolol affects the heart and maybe it's better to take precaution (although this had never been the case before whenever I was prescribed propranolol). I didn't know I was going to go through any of these procedures prior to entering the office so I ended up being late for work (the wait times there are pretty terrible for whatever reason), and I still didn't have any propranolol after I left with the holter so I spent the day trying to either bear through the panic attacks or just avoid panic inducing situations. The next day I went back to the office as early as possible (8am) to take the holter off and to see if I could get my medication. I was then berated for coming too early and I explained that I had been late for work and I didn't even know why I was wearing a holter or undergoing these procedures anyways for simply getting propranolol for panic attacks. Then he closed the door and simply told me that he wouldn't be seeing me (completely disregarding my reason for visit and the two days I had been there, my wait time, my condition, everything). So now I wasted two days, still no propranolol, and gotta change my Primary Care Physician because this guy simply doesn't care. Also, he sometimes makes inaccurate (and potentially dangerous) statements/assessments such as how he said Adderall was prescribed for Schizophrenia. His knowledge of psychotropic medication was all messed up (I was a psychology major plus all the experience in having these experiences with these disorders familiarized me with them). I swear he said that. If someone takes Adderall for Schizophrenia they might get psychosis. Long story short, maybe I did something wrong. Maybe I should have let him make the diagnosis and continued to wait forever as opposed to request what I knew would help me after 12 years of experience and trust myself instead of his application of Adderall. Maybe I was too patient or not patient enough or aggressive or not aggressive enough or maybe something's wrong with me. Or maybe I waited too long to change my physician.
