Great PR food. Tiny place. You feel like you're visiting family or something like that. Very homey.

Walked in here the other day with my ma and brother. First impression: "I love this place!" Anyone that knows me knows that I would choose a small, casual or intimate eatery any day over a big, bougie restaurant. I tend to find perfection in the imperfections of modest places such as these. Walking in had such a home-feeling because it is a bit cramped and intimate. You can see the cook cooking at the old, gas stove in front of you and if the place is full, I would imagine brushing shoulders with others beside you. Our waiter was very nice and talkative. As far as the food, it was a little over-priced. Here's a quick rundown of what we ordered at our table, and as usual, we share our food with each other so I had the privilege of trying a few different dishes: steak and onions, cod, and fried pork. The steak was a bit rough, dry, and plain. In all honesty, it was the worst steak I have ever had and I know what they were trying to do because my mom makes it the same way. The cod was pretty good, drowned in a lot of tasty sauce. The winner of the trio was definitely the fried pork. I have had fried pork before and the one here is very tender, juicy, and bold with flavor! Just how I like it! Also included on the side was yellow rice, fried plantains, mofongo, and black beans. All average. I do not wish to give any false impression, the food here is good but you can only go so far cooking traditional foods unless there is something unique that they do to their food. My brother said that when he previously went when the owner was there, the food tasted much better so maybe part of it was just the cook they had that day. We stopped here for lunch. My friend and I left the restaurant with a stomach ache. I had the bistec encebollado con mofongo and my friend had the chicharrón de pollo con mofongo. The meat tasted delicious. The mofongo was very dry, not moist at all, and flavor was missing. 30 minutes to an hour later, we were burping and had stomach aches all afternoon until the evening time. Very good authentic Puerto Rican food. We came all the way from Chicago and we happened to be in the neighborhood when we came across this hidden gem. The owner who also happens to work the kitchen is very nice also. read more

Delicious bacalao con tostones! Cooked when ordere, super fresh ingredients. Mayoketchup off the chain! Great personalized customer service. You can even call ahead and they will have it ready for pick up. Its my Boricua food Zen. Love it! read more

I went before 7pm and was very disappointed with the mofongo. I've only had mofongo in the Bronx before and was searching for a place to find really good mofongo in Houston. I saw this place on Yelp and was excited to check it out due to the amazing reviews online. I don't know if it was because it was a to-go order or not but my mofongo was only mashed plantains without the chicharron or garlic flavor with it. The carne frita was good though. read more

The menu is small,, but everything is fresh and made to order. The owner greeted us warmly, helped us understand the menu, and the food was good. The mufongo is clearly a house specialty, and the carne frite was crisp and flavorful. We'll be back! read more

I went with my girlfriend which is not from PR. The window A/C was not enough for the place the few tables were not cleaned. The empanillas burned and the service...well there is no service. Looks like the new owner is in the wrong business. i waited a month to write this review. It is a shame that they call this Puerto rican food place. I was so ashamed after i left. That i can believe this place is open . The previous owners served better food and same place was cleaner. They don't even offer you water. please sell or close this business it is a shame to people from Puerto Rico like me. read more

What a hidden Gem, this is the classic of," don't judge a book by its cover". Angelo, is a humble excellent authentic cook. It reminds me of Moms cooking and the portions are perfect. Once, you arrive you receive a warm welcome which makes you feel at home. I recommend this little place for real Puerto Rican food. read more

The food was very good, place is rather small for the amount of business they have based on its popularity. If you eat in, be prepared to perspire because it is warm in there with all the cooking that's being done to prepare your fresh foord order. The Puerto Rican food here is mediocre; I have had home made Puerto Rican food and this can't even compare. They use cheap ingredients (fiesta brand) and charge too much for crappy food. One star because it's located in cool area but food is not good! read more

If you want good Puerto Rican food, this is the place to go. However be warned, the place is always jam packed! The place is tiny, its a mom and pop converted rundown home with maybe 4 1/2 tables... Seems like the clientele is pretty consistant as the old couple seemed to know everyone... You are literally waiting for a table to eat but when you finally get a seat, the food is worth the wait. The old man is back there cooking it up and they talk all kinds of crazy to each other and customers.. Its great, like going to grandmas house to eat (just with a bill) lol.. It was definitely nostalgia for me. Fresh fried tostones with a side salad are brought to the table, you get your own drink from the large fridge so its all really homey. The couple cooks and serves up the food. I had the mofongo, carne guisada and washed it all down with a malta..MMMmmm MMMMMm!! They flan was to die for, oh so creamy and rich! oh the good ole days! I ordered the bacalao to go for my parents and they said it was delicious! Love the food_ Marvin Zindler gave this food plenty of awards BTW, hate the parking inconvenience and the wait but you have to eat there! The hours are also limited they only open for a few hours so find out before you make a blank trip. read more

loved this place! its definitely a hole in the wall. if hole in the walls are not your thing then do not come here and ignore the 5 star rating . . . if you like small intimate family run places without alot of fluff this is for you. Even though they were super busy the 2 guys behind the counter were really nice and asked us every so often how the food was and if we needed anything else. The food was great, we had the chopped fried pork and the chicken stew . . . both were awesome but if you want less grease then opt for the chicken stew. The flan was good but since I ate so much of the actual meal I cant remember if it was reallllly good or just good. I think I'll try the cod stew the next time I come here and try to save room to really taste the flan! read more

This is a very difficult review for me to write. I got excellent service at ths place. Some of the best service that I have ever gotten in Houston. However, the good ends there. Upon walking in, it was hot. Ver hot. The ac was going, but it didn't seem to be helping much. Menu is written on an erasable board on the wall with no prices. There is a reason that there are no prices. I got the mofongo, and the girlfriend got something made out of plantain with rice and beans. When the plates came out, I was very surprised. They were very, very small. The flavor was just not good. I made myself eat it (I am sure my friends are saying I have never been forced to eat anything). My girlfriend did not like her plate either. We get the bill. Over $40 for what is essentially an appetizer and a small plate of food?????? We had 2 drinks in cans. For that meal, it should have been less than $20. I really can't see why you would go here instead of having Colombian or Cuban. Scratch this one off the list. read more

Sorry to burst everyones bubble that wrote a 5 star review about Tex Chick but I have to say that the food there is NOT real Puerto Rican cooking! Before going there, I read all the reviews about this place and I thought that I would be in for a treat but I was very wrong. I don't understand how people could give this place a 5 star review. Maybe they all went there really hungry! I didn't have a problem with how small and humble the place was and I'm all for going to a family owned restaurant but the food was not up to my expectations. The food was barely seasoned, and the rice was more like mexican rice. I had the bistec encebollado, and the meat was too bland to be called a Puerto Rican dish. The tostones were small and the plantanos used weren't green enough. the fried pork chop was disappointing as well. As I looked through the menu I couldn't help but notice how they didn't serve any frituras. I couldn't believe it, they didn't even serve empanadillas there! perhaps the food was better before the new owner came but now it's not worth the money. And maybe I've been spoiled with great Puerto Rican cooking and I know what great food is, but I will never go there again. I almost felt like walking over to the kitchen and cook my own meal. Tex chic is just to pricey for what they serve. The sad thing is that Tex Chic is the only P.R restaurant in Houston. read more

Very authentic Puerto Rican food. I had the carne frita with rice, beans, and fried plantains. My husband had the bacalao and mofongo. If you are looking for the real deal, it's here. Order at the counter. You may have to wait a bit, so relax and enjoy the salsa sounds and the company with you. We went around 2 pm on a Wednesday and it wasn't crowded. Lunch time and weekends get very busy for this small establishment though. With only a few tables, you might have to wait outside. Parking is a challenge because you will have to find a spot on the street, perhaps one of the adjacent side streets. read more

I'm all about simple, home-cooked food that hits the spot, and Tex-Chick is one of those places. A humble, blue shack that's probably overlooked a lot by many constantly churns out some savory Puerto Rican classics. The real standouts are the Mofongo(ask them to douse it in some of the stew sauce HNNNNNG), the carne frita(melt in your mouth, fried pork), or the Chuletas. You literally feel like you're eating in someone's kitchen, as you can see your food being prepared. Great spot, I hope it never leaves. BEST PUERTO RICAN FOOD IN HOUSTON!!! Maybe ever the only one right now. None the less, for someone like who has no one to cook a good old plate of my native grub, this place is KING!! The atmosphere is what you find back in the island, small, quaint and some good people to talk to. And if I was a baseball fan it would be a great place to bump into my favorite player. Prices a bit more than your usual lunch spot but they do ask if you need more rice to finish up your 'guisao'(stew). Im glad its here and Im really glad its finally EASY TO FIND!! read more

I had never had Puerto Rican food before and it was ok. The staff was polite. I gather the food is authentic because there was a Puerto Rican family of about 10 celebrating a birthday. The restaurant consist of about 5 tables so it's quaint. You almost feel like you are in Puerto Rico. read more
