I finally had the pleasure of checking out Tex-Chick Eatery, a family-owned Puerto Rican restaurant…read morethat's been serving the community since 1982 and is now lovingly run by Titi Marilu and Grace. From the moment I stepped into this cozy spot, I instantly felt like I was back home in Puerto Rico. Just like our island, it's small, but filled with a huge heart. We spent time chatting with them about our families, childhood memories, and how happy we are that they've kept our culture alive right here in the Montrose area of Houston. We enjoyed a true Puerto Rican feast: arroz con gandules, pernil, mofongo con camarones al ajillo, pollo frito, empanadas de yuca y masa, flan de coco, limber de guanábana, and of course, more food to take home because we couldn't have it all at once! My personal favorite were the limbers with traditional flavors I don't recall ever having a limber outside of PR. This is a counter-service eatery, where you can see all the freshly prepared dishes right in front of you. You truly can't ask for better service; if there's something you're craving that's not in the menu for that day and they have time, they'll gladly make it for you! That's the kind of love and care you only find in places that cook from the heart. Prices are very reasonable although parking can be a bit tricky but that's mostly all of Montrose. Let's keep our culture thriving. s Support our local Puerto Rican businesses. WEEPA!

They change the menu daily so check their Facebook page to know what they are serving. We had Mofongo with Pernil and Mofongo with bacalao (cod fish) which were delicious. Their empanadas (beef and corn beef) were light, flaky and very tasty. We had some platanos maduros (sweet plantain) and some tostones (fried green plantains). Topped the delicious meal with Malta & Flan. The parking is very sparse and the dining room only has 3 small tables and some seats along the wall. They sell till they run out so you want to go early.

The restaurant itself was very clean, the atmosphere was nice, and I was happy to see limbers on the menu. Service was also pleasant. But when it came to the food, it was a letdown. The vegetable fried rice had very little flavor, and both the sweet and sour chicken and orange chicken were just okay, nothing particularly memorable. The biggest disappointment was the crab rangoon, which was honestly the worst I've ever had. It lacked flavor and texture, and I couldn't finish it. The tostones needed salt they were a bit too soft too. Overall, I left wishing the food had more seasoning and more of the bold flavors that make both Latin and Chinese cuisine so special. The concept has so much potential, but this visit missed the mark for me. Sadly, the food wasn't something my Puerto Rican ancestors would be proud of. Hopefully it was just an off day, but based on this experience, I don't see myself returning.

While this was my first time to dine here it appeared to me that it is a chain restaurant by the signage and decor. I wanted to try their fried chicken and the prices are quite low so I ordered the 4 pc fried chicken meal that comes with french fries for just $10! I asked for dark meat and they said it would take 8 minutes to prepare. While I waited, I did visit their self serve fountain drink machine. The food arrived in a big bag and after emptying it I found a box with 4 pieces of fried chicken sitting on a large bed of french fries. I was amazed at the quantity of the food given for just $10. The chicken was hot and the fries were not. In fact they were barely warm. Why do you give me fresh cooked hot chicken and old cold fries? On top of that the hot chicken was not that tasty. I have had far better. It wasn't bad but it wasn't that good either. Yes, the food is inexpensive and the serving size large but give me more taste and flavor both in the chicken and fries.

Authentic Dominican/Caribbean food in Willowbrook. Who knew?…read more I remember this place from a birthday party decades ago. The space was a bit bigger (they've since redesigned it smaller), but the crowds were smaller. Success hasn't tarnished their food. It was a very rainy and soggy afternoons and the place was packed. We managed a table and ordered. Can't go wrong with the delicious shrimp mofongo. I honestly think the sauce is the icing on that cake, made all the more delicious with a squeeze of lemon. Whew! Service was fast and dinner came out at a reasonable pace. The owner is so friendly and stopped by our table to make sure things were good. Better than good! If you're in the Willowbrook area do yourself a favor and stop in for lunch or dinner. Prices are a little steep, but what's isn't these days?

I ordered the pollo guisado and moro, both were good and we have a little left over. My partner ordered the pica pollo and the fried chicken was decent. The food does take some time, and servers did not check in too often so I would recommend ordering ahead of time (unless you have a long lunch break), There are plenty of tables, but it is a little dark inside, 2 bathrooms inside. The juice was on the sweet side so just watered it down (wish they have smoothies), but they get 5 stars overall for the flavor and the price point. Plenty of parking as it's in located along other stores.

Spacious and clean seating inside, it's to go style so you order at the counter and they buzz you when the order is ready for pick up. We waited a bit longer for our plates, like about 20min but it's ok since the food was yummy. Orange chicken with the fried rice and fries is 9/10, not as crispy as I wanted but the balance of sweet sourness was perfect. Chicken was tender and soft, not heavily coated too. Fried rice was my favorite because I don't like peas and carrots, there's none of that, instead they got some bbq pork and egg, not salty and great rice texture (every grain is well seasoned and separated) Jalapeño Churrasco with the mofongo is like a 8/10. Beef is juicy but super chewy. Every piece has a light grill smokey taste. Highlight is the sauce, it's little tangy but not really spicy unless you eat the jalapeño. Was my first time trying the mofongo, very interesting texture and really garlicky. Dipping the mofongo in the churrasco sauce was a great pairing though. Overall, I really like the place. I will be back to try more in the future, especially that boneless pork ribs that I see a lot of reviews about.

So we made the drive here on a Saturday in the Texas heat to check it out. Pulling up here, it's got the island themes with the Jamaican flags, island memorabilia, and afro-beats music blaring from the inside; felt like we were visiting one of the Caribbean restaurants on the islands. We placed an order for the jerk chicken eggrolls, the jamaican beef pattie, a jerk chicken platter w/ rice & peas & curry veggies, and a brown-stewed chicken with steamed cabbage and mac & cheese. About 9-10 minutes later, they called us for our food and we dug in. Everything was absolutely bursting with flavors and island spices. The jerk chicken eggrolls, both entrees, and the cabbage & curried veggies sides are definite must-orders. The chicken in all of those dishes are super tender and melt in your mouth with the spices and sauce. The Jamaican pattie is pretty good although it's the same that I've had at other spots. The rice & peas is a pretty big portion and you can taste the thyme and other spices in it. I didn't care for the mac & cheese but my fiance loved it; wasn't blown away by it. All the seating is outdoors with minimal indoor high seats so it may be best to get it to go. The beverages are island drinks such as the ocean wata (blueberry lemonade) and the Ting (grapefruit soda) which are popular island staples at the convenience stores. They pair great with whatever eats you're ordering. Other food items here that I need to try is the red snapper, the oxtail cheesesteak, and the curry goat. We'll definitely be back to try those! They also do catering as well so that may be another option we'll consider!

I was very excited for the jerk fries because I used to get them from their food truck, but they have not had them on the menu in a while. The jerk chicken was delicious, but the fries were overcooked and dry. I usually like the food here, so I think today was an off day. It was disappointing since my primary reason for visiting today was the jerk fries. The portion sizes exceeded expectations, but unfortunately the food wasn't the best today. The service is always pleasant, however, the pricing for restaurant week was not as advertised. I made them aware of the issue and was advised they would look into it, however, no correction was made to my order. It wasn't the best experience today, but I will try them again.
