First time visit. Eating late Saturday afternoon so in between crowded times. I ordered the Chopped Steak with mashed potatoes, brown gravy, and carrots with Fried Green Tomato appetizer. Fried Green Tomatoes were huge (in a good way) pieces. Fresh, hot and hand battered. Generous serving. Chopped steak was good. Mashed potatoes had the little chunks the way I like. Nice small town diner ambience. Service was good. We just enjoyed everything. Also got a Pecan Cobbler that was really good, but ate it too fast to take a picture. I think Chicken Fried Steak is an item that has kept the people of the Southern United States together regardless of interests, jobs, intelligence, and opinions. It is a unifying meal of blue-collared and white-collared people alike. It is a food that unifies the vast cultures of the south. There is no debate when there is a Chicken Fried Steak. Soul food and southern food are so severely important to people who were raised in the south because the overall feeling of those cuisines is that it feels like their Grandma is cooking dinner. Now if you look at my Yelp profile picture for a fraction of a second and maybe stereotype a little, you can accurately assume that my Grandma's cooking would fit in the latter and you would maybe wonder if my grandmother knows what seasoning is. If you have had her chili, you would say no. The famous Texan Cafe & Pie Shop in Hutto is a classic Southern diner that is always a perfect pick-me-up meal and is a truest staple of the area. When I first visited Hutto before moving I looked for places to try, and the abundant and sheer quantity of reviews for Texan Cafe made it clear that I had to try it. That was just over a year ago, and I still remember parking my car in the lot across the street and walking into the cozy diner with wood chairs and booths, red tablecloths, and so much decor on the walls it might be a museum, and I felt right about moving to Hutto. I was seated immediately and almost instantly ordered the Chicken Fried Steak smothered with white gravy, of course, with sides of Fried Okra and Mashed Potatoes. It was not long before the beautiful plate hit my table, and I destroyed everything on that plate. When I thought it was over, I was handed the dessert menu that was two full rows worth of pie and other options. I was mesmerized by the length of it and was overwhelmed by the options. I texted my parents to tell them and suddenly I was going back to San Antonio with slices on slices worth of pie for them to have. When my parents came up to help move me in, they wanted to go to the Texan. They were impressed with how great the meal was alongside the pies. Pies that they bought extra of to take back with them to San Antonio. When I started my job, the first meal they took us new hires to was the Texan. I tried their Blue Plate Special and found out that Chicken Fried Pork Chops exist and fell in love with that. When my brother came and visited meeting my parents and me in Hutto, we went to the Texan. We enjoyed their appetizers and everyone had to have a slice of pie. Options for everyone. When a friend came and visited, she took a solo trip to the Texan while I was at work then told me she took the best nap of her life after. My buddy and I decided to go randomly one day after work to try their Hot Pie with Brandy Sauce. That thing is a tank and is worth a visit to try alone. What a sweet creation. When my girlfriend visited me in Hutto, I took her to the Texan and she will randomly text me about how much she misses the pie. I try to get her a slice every time she comes and visits. It is her favorite thing. It is clear to see why it is a favorite to so many because everyone I have taken to the Texan has left a fan wanting to come back. I brought my grandparents home a full Blueberry pie from the Texan Cafe which my grandma told me "was the best I have even since I was a little girl. Not too sweet with a great crust. Just right. A blueberry pie is my favorite." I know this review is less of a review and more of a collection of vignettes of many stories built inside the walls of the Texan Cafe, but that is what is so beautiful about southern hospitality and southern diners. That is why there is so much decor about the extensive history of Texan Cafe and the culture of Hutto on the walls. I went back this afternoon for the first time in a short while, but I find myself continuously impressed by the quality of the food, the efficiency as a whole, and just how welcoming everyone is inside. Their pies are just truly next level. Today, I went for the Chicken Fried Pork Chop Blue Plate Special which is truly heaven sent, potato salad, fried okra, and a slice of their cherry pie. It is a meal you feel blessed to eat and a restaurant you love supporting because of it. Every pie I have had at the Texan is better than any other pie I have eaten. Come here for the dessert. Skip the main entrees. My peach cobbler was warm and delicious. Fried fish and shrimp were okay. I thought the fish at Golden Corral (which I had the week prior) was much better. Mashed potatoes with cream gravy and green beans were just okay. The brown gravy was dreadful. Came by here over the weekend. Cute little spot on a cute Lil street. Food: went with chicken fried chicken and it was indeed crunchy and delightful. Some parts were kinda dry like it was older chicken but it was only 3 bites of it...but still. Cfs..it was good but cfc was better. Sides: Mashed potatoes were good..chunky and authentic. Brown gravy reminded me of kfc gravy and personally not my bag but hubby liked it. Fried okra was good too..Mac n cheese was bland...perfect for kids lol. White gravy was good. I don't mean waiting on the food (I'll wait all day for hot fresh food) but it took the waitress about 5 mins to come greet us then a while to bring the drinks back then ask our order etc . Great southern spot, there aren't many of these around Austin it seems. I ordered the chicken fried steak (confusing name) for take out and the sandwich is pretty large. I'm glad I didn't eat breakfast. This is exactly what you expect in a chicken fried steak with fries. The flavors are there so there's no complaints. The food was in my car for about 9 mins so the fries got a bit soggy with no surprise. The sandwich still had some crunch from the breading which was nice. My family and I have been going to this restaurant ever since we move here 13 years ago to Pflugerville, TX. The restaurant in itself has changed through the years for the better and nothing bad, but has updated itself through the years. The ambiance of the place is country feeling and like another home away from home almost. All the items on the menu are delicious and you cannot go wrong with some of their country fried steak options. Everything is massively made that you will need a to go box in most cases. The service is amazing, but they can be busy at times especially with large multiple groups walk in. Their pies are amazing and always made fresh in house. We saw this place on the TV show "Daytripper". We like trying new places so off we went. It was just a half hour drive from our home in Cedar Park. The last few feet of the trip was a little confusing because we were on Main St. and out GPS was yelling "You''re here". The actual location is just a block away on East St. Anyhow, we found it. Beckie was as excited as I was when I ordered it. When it comes out to your table, listen to your server's instructions because the damn things hot. The first four or five bites must include ice cream or you'll be reaching for the ice water real quick. We were there in off hours because that's when we eat our main dinner. It's been several months since we went to Texan. Daughter had the Chicken Caesar salad. She said it was good. I had liver and onions with loaded baked potato and green beans. Liver was good, tender and as expected. The loaded potato was butter and sour cream only. No bacon bits or cheese. I was told it was an up charge for it. They get an F for loaded and especially since it was extra! Wife had Buffalo chicken sandwich. It's always an A+! Daughter 1, got chicken fried steak with Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. She said excellent chicken fried steak. But Mac n cheese was bland. My mom got chicken sandwich. She said chicken was overcooked and tough. I have never given anything below 5 stars but quality has declined at Texan. Server was slammed by the few tables she had. Definitely not busy but understaffed. My husband and I ate at the Texan Cafe on March 6 and for the first time, we were disappointed. First of all, the service was friendly, but slower than normal. That was ok, but the food serving was oddly small and quality was not great. I think I received two quarter pieces of fish with two shrimp and my husband had the same small amount on his fish sandwich. We went to pick up a Keylime pie. I was told on the phone the pie was $17.99 . We decided to have dinner there as well. When we walked in the place smelled like dirty dish rags. . I had a small ordinary dinner salad and a small bowl of chicken noodle soup. It was 1299. The soup was incredibly bland. While I ordered to go, I did have contact with an employee which was very pleasant. She was courteous and helpful. Foodwise, this cafe was a disappointment. The liver in one order and the chicken in the other were both overcooked and dry. The green beans in both orders were cooked with too much bacon, so they were overly greasy rather than flavored. (I can't find the chicken dish I ordered now, so I can't confirm that the chicken was described as "smothered" with shrimp and mushrooms, but that's my memory. The Texan has always been delicious (I am a local and have lived in the area over 20 years), it's always been good with its cooking style and pies that are yum! This review is based on PIE alone. Our family has gotten pie from here over the years, and it's nice to have a place you can grab a piece of pie from on a whim. They have a great selection. It's a toss-up on the favorites - the coconut, German chocolate, and blueberry are all great. The key lime is just okay, not very tart if you like that. They have snickers pie, smores pie, chess pie, and lots of other interesting flavors to choose from. I've never tried the cobblers because they just don't look appetizing the way they are presented, but I bet they are good. Down home cooking in Hutto. My boyfriend is about as country boy as they come and he had a hankerin' for some liver and onions and I do love me some chicken fried steak! We headed out to Texan Cafe and got both our needs met. As someone who grew up in the city, I was not really exposed to organ meats, but I do remember my mom having to eat liver and onions for iron when she was pregnant with my sister. I remember thinking it looked gross and when I tried it, it was confirmed. I will say, however, when the server brought out my guy's plate, I thought, now that actually looks good! I tried it and initially liked the taste, but after a few chews, that distinctive texture and taste came through. I still don't love it, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered. Kelly thought it was better than his Aunt Edna's. High praise, indeed. As for my chicken fried steak, it was pretty good. I wouldn't say it was the best I've had, but it was flavorful and tender. The macaroni and cheese was cafeteria style, not how I, or anyone I know makes it, but reminded me of how the school cafeteria made it. The okra was perfect and crunchy and not slimy. On Kelly's plate, the green beans looked to be the canned variety, which he loves, but I hate. The best part was the pie!! They have about two dozen made fresh pies to choose from and we had the skillet apple pie, served hot on a cast iron skillet with a brandy caramel and a large scoop after frozen solid ice cream which melts a little slower than normally ice cream temp. They are happy to package everything up for you to go whatever you don't finish and whatever pies you want to go.
