Fried green tomatoes
Amy T.

Came by here over the weekend. Cute little spot on a cute Lil street. Food: went with chicken fried chicken and it was indeed crunchy and delightful. Some parts were kinda dry like it was older chicken but it was only 3 bites of it...but still. Cfs..it was good but cfc was better. Sides: Mashed potatoes were good..chunky and authentic. Brown gravy reminded me of kfc gravy and personally not my bag but hubby liked it. Fried okra was good too..Mac n cheese was bland...perfect for kids lol. White gravy was good. Had a few bites with it and it was tasty. Texas toast was more like petrified toast...skip that one next time. Kids plate: cheeseburger and fries both were really good. One of my girls didn't care for the bread but at the meat...(yes girl, get that protein) Appetizer we had fried green tomatoes...super tasty. Dessert: we went with banana cream pie. (They were sold out of banana pudding so next best, right) it was yummy. I'll need to recreate that one for sure. Service was OK, no complaints. The only thing I thought was odd was the restaurant only had one bathroom for the whole place...as in a gender neutral one toilet bathroom.

LOVED the boudin egg rolls!!! The service was still pretty slow despite the restaurant not being very full. I don't mean waiting on the food (I'll wait all day for hot fresh food) but it took the waitress about 5 mins to come greet us then a while to bring the drinks back then ask our order etc . Then we didn't really see her again until it was time to go. But as long as you go there with that in mind you'll have a good time.

Great southern spot, there aren't many of these around Austin it seems. I ordered the chicken fried steak (confusing name) for take out and the sandwich is pretty large. I'm glad I didn't eat breakfast. This is exactly what you expect in a chicken fried steak with fries. The flavors are there so there's no complaints. The food was in my car for about 9 mins so the fries got a bit soggy with no surprise. The sandwich still had some crunch from the breading which was nice. The indoor looked like there was a lot of seats and parking outside is pretty abundant. Probably a good place to dine in instead of takeout.

Came here with the family for dinner over the weekend. We enjoyed the Texas and southern style foods. Our favorites were the fried green tomatoes and fried catfish. The peach cobbler ala mode was perfection. The prices seemed fair but they do charge a percentage for credit card payment. Service is friendly and good but feels a little slow moving to me. Overall the food was delicious and enjoyed our time.

My family and I have been going to this restaurant ever since we move here 13 years ago to Pflugerville, TX. The restaurant in itself has changed through the years for the better and nothing bad, but has updated itself through the years. The ambiance of the place is country feeling and like another home away from home almost. All the items on the menu are delicious and you cannot go wrong with some of their country fried steak options. Everything is massively made that you will need a to go box in most cases. The service is amazing, but they can be busy at times especially with large multiple groups walk in. Their pies are amazing and always made fresh in house. They do run out of options to choose from so be aware you may not get the option you would like from their menu. There is plenty of parking on the street or the lot across from the restaurant.

Came here for lunch one day and it was packed. We got the last small table for 2. I had the grilled salmon Caesar salad, which was grilled just perfectly. The fried green tomatoes were good with their ranch, but could use a little more seasoning. Now their pie. We got the peach pie with the brandy butter sauce and ice cream. The crust on that pie was probably the best pie crust I've ever had. Just get it. 10/10 would come back.

Fried Green Tomatoes (best I've ever had!)

Dinner is the time to eat at Texan Cafe! Prompt service, wonderful menu with food to match. Cute interior, but everything takes a back seat to the pie menu. There are several pie combinations involving chocolate/nuts/caramel, all the standard fruit pies and a couple with intriguing names (non-natives will have to ask about such delights as Snickerdoodle). CAVEATS: Incomplete parties are not seated, and the wooden building reverberates sound: this is not the place for an intimate heart-to-heart.

You know, I've never actually eaten here, except for the pie, and this place is all about pie! Not only are their pies extremely well crafted, they have a variety like you wouldn't believe. And if they don't have it, I'm pretty sure they can make it if you call ahead. Very friendly service, and if they put in the same effort in their food, as they do their pies, the food's gotta be awesome too!

Liver and Onions

It's been several months since we went to Texan. Daughter had the Chicken Caesar salad. She said it was good. I had liver and onions with loaded baked potato and green beans. Liver was good, tender and as expected. The loaded potato was butter and sour cream only. No bacon bits or cheese. I was told it was an up charge for it. They get an F for loaded and especially since it was extra! Wife had Buffalo chicken sandwich. It's always an A+! Daughter 1, got chicken fried steak with Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. She said excellent chicken fried steak. But Mac n cheese was bland. My mom got chicken sandwich. She said chicken was overcooked and tough. I have never given anything below 5 stars but quality has declined at Texan. Server was slammed by the few tables she had. Definitely not busy but understaffed. The fried pickles were great but a very small amount now vs the basket they use to serve. I hope in future the quality returns and the Texan can really be one of best diners in Texas.

Where it's at.

I have heard high praise from locals, and at the end of the day, nothing beats a city's local diner. It is one of those places that closes by 3 pm every day and feels perfect for brunch after a Sunday church service. I came in a little after 11 am with the man who is basically the face of Hutto at his request. He has lived in Hutto for years and has countless stories of the city to share. We sat as he shared stories with my co worker and me about the history of the city. He is a wonderful man, and if he thinks Hippo Cafe is a must visit, DAMMIT, it is a must visit. The place feels ripped straight out of the 80s with artwork of musicians including Elvis and Willie Nelson, along with Alf, ET, and Gizmo. It is definitely dated, but in the best way. Looking at the menu, they have everything you would expect a diner to have. Everything is decently priced and affordable. I ordered two breakfast tacos and a tea. One was bacon, egg, and cheese. The other was chorizo, egg, and cheese. They were not winning any awards, but my god they were like an omelet on a tortilla. They were filled with eggs. With a little picante sauce, they were great and felt like a classic diner meal. The service is great. Our lady was attentive and very friendly to us. That seems to be the vibe here. There's a lot of 1 stars here, but trust the guy with the Yelp Elite badge and the essay of a review, it's not a 1 star establishment. It's more. This place feels historic and gets plenty of love from regulars in the city. You know what you are getting into when you visit, but what does that really mean? You are getting old town love. A classic meal. A feeling like you have been standing your whole life and you just sat down. That is Hippo Cafe. RIYL: Your classic cafe or painting of 80s icons (Alf)

Chicken quesadilla was great. Seasoned waffle fries with gringo dip was also very good. Not so good: Management. I ordered a double Jack and Coke in a short glass. I deliberately mentioned the short glass to the waitress, in spite of the fact that a typical double whiskey and Coke drink comes in a short glass. Unfortunately she didn't catch the ask for short glass (she said she'd never had someone yet ask for that order, but I think she meant at this restaurant). Someone delivered a tall glass instead. I asked our waitress to give me a short glass and she tried to do so. When she came back she said the manager wouldn't let her, which was weird, so I asked to see the manager. Josh. Josh did not handle the interaction well in my opinion. In his opinion it was the same alcohol in a short or tall, so he thought I should just drink the tall. That's obviously not a great experience. Ultimately after a (too) long discussion he didn't charge for the drink. But the experience was ruined for us and since this was our first visit to this location it was simply a bummer and we likely won't be back.

Ticked away in a little complex without 79 visibility along with a couple of other places that don't seem to get much traffic either. Finally made our first visit so we could try "the best fish & chips" in the Austin area. I was surprised how big it was, they have a patio, a bar area and lots of tables I was shocked as from the outside it looks tiny. Service was fantastic which was shocking with them closing soon. The service was enough to want me to go back hopefully for us in this area they end up somewhere close by as I know how hard it is to find good workers. Pretzels were good! Onion rings were our favorite! Their version of the Philly was just okay, was very plain with not much flavor hubby didn't even finish half. But the star of the show was the fish and chips. My son was over the moon! Couldn't even finish half of it and he wanted to haha. Sad to see they will be closing their doors but hopefully the owner has something else up his sleeve as they were onto something with this place.

I didn't really use the curry sauce that also came with the dish. To me it doesn't go with fish or chips. I did taste it, and the flavor was great.
