We visit Back 40 a lot for their shrimp. The last 3 times we have been the menu says 10 shrimp and they brought 8. Last night we waited 1.5 hrs. We left because the food was not really even warm when we finally got it. Why doesn't someone expedite food? Did the waitress forget to turn in the order? It makes us sad because this restaurant is close and when everything is working right it's good. Unfortunately , it's often not the case. The music on nights with bands or Karaoke are so loud it hurts! This place is small! Turn it down.! read more

I have loved the cobbler here for a year but the last 5 times I've ordered it it's been burnt badly but being nice, I paid for it. Tonight it was charcoal burnt again and I asked for a different one and they brought it out with the top flipped off, but still charcoal burnt. I come here once or twice a week and this is so disappointing. No one even apologized or offered a new one. I really enjoy the environment it's unfortunate that tonight was the last straw. read more

I saw where they were offering pimento and egg salad sandwiches during Masters week. The server said " don't get the egg salad". So I got the pimento. It was awful. Didn't taste anything like a pimento cheese sandwich. Very disappointed. read more

Went over the weekend, was excited because the food looked so good and price was great. Walked in and immediately felt unwelcome. We were a large-sigh group of less than 10, was told we could sit anywhere but had to put the tables together ourselves. Place was not even busy, slight help would have been great. Bartender (brunette girl) just stared no smile or anything, looked mad. Waitress (blonde girl) did the same. Waitress did warm up somewhat, but not very welcoming at all. Also food came out one by one over the course of maybe 15mins. Overall just a horrible and unpleasant experience. read more

Really wanted to give this place a 5 Star but no. Never been here before and when I came in I noticed the young Bartender kid "Austin" paid more attention to his phone than the customers.always on his phone and not very friendly. One of the waitresses was trying to get his attention and again just not paying attention . The burger I ordered was delicious but I was hoping the fries would be anything but shoe string. Grabbed lunch here today (Tuesday) and apparently this is the day for lunch specials! This place is bright with lots of windows, outdoor seating too. Went to this place on Friday night for the first time. I had seen it driving by over the years, but never captured my attention. Fast forward to Friday, 5/29, when I saw a deal on my credit card's portal with restaurant.com. After seeing the deal and clicking on the site, I decided to look into what restaurants they had in Lubbock. Back 40 was one of about 4 restaurants in Lubbock on this site. I was able to purchase gift cards at a discounted rate to redeem at the restaurant. We go and, in short, we were told that the new owners, Jeff and Tina McCreight, had no clue what we were talking about, but IF it was legit (excuse me?!?!?) then they would NOT be honoring it. To add insult to injury, all communication was done via the waitress, even though Mr. McCreight was visible on the floor the entire evening we were there and even approached at least one table next to ours multiple times. As a result, I contacted the credit card company after we left. Credit card company asked me to contact restaurant.com, which I did earlier today. The website gladly refunded the gift cards ($100 worth) and stated they would be in contact with Back 40, as they were in violation of their contractual agreement. As a result of all the above, we will not be returning. Two stars are for the attentive waitress and pretty good, yet overpriced cuisine. Unlike the proprietors, we're being generous. read more

On 21 Feb 2022 my family and I attended this establishment and were expecting some decent food. Especially since the average plat was over the $12 range. I am giving this place a 1.78 star rating due to the lack of attention to the food preparation and and the service we experienced. My wife received an overcooked burger that can be compared to a gourmet McDonalds burger. My shrimp tacos had potential. Three shrimp to a taco, but the flavors were on point like OJ in the 90s. Sadly the foundation lacked pizazz. The tortilla was not cooked at all. Even Taco Bell puts them thru that steamer deal before they serve them. My side dish was quite the disappointment as well. I grew up in what most people today would call "the struggle" and I know boxed macaroni and cheese when I taste it. And if it wasn't boxed macaroni and cheese and was house made, BRAVO!! for making homemade food taste like cardboard junk. The straw that broke the camels back was when my daughter dropped her drink and three employees watched it go down and all they did was call our waitress. Not a single person came over to offer a towel for a quick and easy clean up. Mind you we were the only ones there. Will I come Back here?? Probably not . I would hate to see the service and product they produce on a busy day. With the $52 I spent here I'm sure I could pay an amateur chef to muster up something a lil more decent. read more

Was super excited to try this place out... Service was terrible. Started from the eye roll from the hostess when we greeted her and asked for a table for 5. Our server was about the same. Friendly until we asked for a drink menu, which she replied "I mean you can but I'd have to go find one first" Never got the opportunity to order an appetizer or drink. This place was delicious. I ordered steak fingers and others in my group ordered chicken fried steak and fried zucchini. Everything was very good, not some frozen food that was warmed up. We were quickly approached upon arrival even though there was not a hostess. 4 different members of waitstaff checked on us while a table was cleaned for us. The attentiveness stopped there however and we waited at our table for 10 minutes before a waitress took our drink order. After ordering our food we waited a half hour and had to ask for our salads to come out first. The salads are not special, just iceberg lettuce, cheese and croutons, but I got jalapeño ranch and it was pretty delicious. My husband and I both ordered the Santa Fe chicken and each got different French fries. One of our chicken breasts was dry and the other was pretty salty...neither were terrible but neither were great. The sweet potato fries and French fries were awesome though! We probably won't be back for dinner, but maybe some appetizers and drinks-it looks like they have great weekly drink specials. read more

I had an amazing experience eating here. My servers name was Harper and she was so nice! She told me to get the Texas Firecrackers to start and then get the West Texas Burger. I was Thrilled! Everything was amazing and I finished everything on my plate. Harper gave me some great recommendations on where to grab some drinks later that night and we had so much fun! Enjoyed a nice lunch on a Saturday afternoon Red Raider game day. Place was packed with lots of fans. Despite the restaurant being very busy we had good friendly, attentive service. The manager came by several times to see if everything was good. Several in our group ordered potato skins which they said were very good. Side salads were generous portion and were fresh with what tasted like homemade croutons. I had the tilapia grilled tacos which were generous sized on nice white corn tortillas served with slaw, a little corn & black bean salsa (which I wished I'd got more of) and a dollop guacamole. I opted for fries as side. They were ok Another in our group ordered an alacarte grilled chicken breast which was cooked perfect and was heart shaped . OMG the BILL was 92.50 for LUNCH on a Sunday dang sure wasn't worth a 1/4of that!!! Shrimp Taco- tortilla so hard i couldn't bite into it, the shrimp was so hot my lips were burning (and i like hot) couldn't catch the waitress for some tea .... then when i did she brought out hot tea and a glass of ice .."HERE". The others were satisfied with their meal until we got the bill and then we were all depressed that we didn't go to Saltgrass or Cattle Barron for that price .... i had 4 pieces of shrimp for 14.99... green beans were dried out and sweet ??? wth??? the original waitress was friendly but i wouldn't say attentive ...at all... we had to ask for everything . so SAVE your $ ....maybe have A beer watch the many t.v.s and move on down the road!!!!! read more

This place was one of my favorite places to go and the previous owners were outstanding. The previous owner one year for Veterans Day got custom beer mugs made for 100 veterans in Lubbock and I was one of the lucky ones to have this made for me. We were allowed to leave our mugs there and when we showed up to have a drink we just had to request to use our personalized mug. Well long story short I went a couple days ago to have a beer in my mug and when I requested it I was told they can't do it, then the new owner said to me " what do you want me to do?" I said please find the mug and I was told to call back the next day. I called and was told the mug along with another group had broke due to a shelve breaking but that to me didn't sound right. I called and then went up there to be told the owner more than likely won't replace it and this was after I was standing at the bar for about 3 minutes while looking at the staff just staring at me. Nobody wanted to talk to me and after giving all my information I feel the establishment was very rude to me and didn't really want to hear it honestly. The female bartender looked at me and said we have one of our veterans mug's here but he comes in every day, after that statement I told her that's great but I'm not an alcoholic so sorry I don't come in but often. I know this mug will not be replaced and honestly it seems to me they don't care and it's not there problem. This place has gone down hill since the old owners. read more

We stopped by for happy hour and dinner as a party of 5 on a Friday night. It became VERY clear as we walked in that this was a neighborhood joint. And it was awesome. The service was great, the fried jalapeños were a great starter, and the drinks were excellent from the full bar. Our dinners came out hot and delicious. It was fun chatting across tables and laughing with locals. (In our home state bars and restaurants are closed. So after 10 months of COVID - this was a cherished experience.). It blows my mind that they no longer serve steak. I had one of the best steaks years ago and came back to celebrate an occasion with my wife only to find out they no longer had steak. Side salad with bleu cheese dressing was just okay. Had the Bacon Bleu cheese Burger for entree. Even though we asked for well-done, it was juicy and flavorful. Big time disappointment here. We stopped in to grab a bite to eat after running some errands in town. I had heard good things about this place. We started out with an order of cheese sticks. About 2 minutes after ordering them, they were on our table. At first we were really impressed with the service, then we tried the cheese sticks. The middles were still cold, not cool, but cold. It took about 10 minutes for the manger to finally come over and ask if everything was okay. We got a fresh order, and ate some mediocre cheese sticks. I ordered the "damn good sliders." It would appear that they named this before actually trying it. I'm a big fan of chicken friend steak, but putting it on sliders is a terrible idea. Meat was tough and chewy. Had to take the sliders apart and eat it with a knife and fork. I saw several reviews raving about the jalapeno gravy, so I tried it. One of the worst things I have ever tasted. The flavor was awful. Fortunately, they had good ranch to dip the fries in. Save your money and time and drive past this place. I promise you, you won't be missing anything. read more

If you are reading this for a recommend place to eat you hit the jackpot for Lubbock. We were a group of 11 people so we saw and sampled quite a bit of the menu by all getting something different with several appetizers. The shrimp and cream cheese stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon was incredible. From the chicken fried steak to the club you can tell love went into the menu. Best onion rings I've had in a while to boot. Personally I had the steak fajita's and loved every bite. This is no stock photo I'm posting either! It was taken with my motor z and does not do it justice. One other person ordered the same fajita plate and the whole place was filled with Smokey sizzling beef! Portions are HUGE (chicken strips could feed 3) and the wait staff was friendly. A MUST stop if you are passing through or a regular stop to watch the game on a bunch of huge flat screens. We. Will. They brought us our food, then it sat there because they had no silverware rolled to give us. Nice. We saw our server so little that most of the time we just ordered from the bar.
