Really cool to see all these old items. Food: I got the three meat plate: ribs, brisket and sausage. Out of the three meats I would say the brisket was the best. They cut the brisket different. Very similar to the brisket you will find and city market in Luling they sausage was alright. The brisket was alright. The Mac and cheese was really good. Loaded mashed potatoes were kind of dry. Nothing was just amazing and great. Very middle of the mall type Bbq. Service: great people that work here. Extremely friendly nice people. They move fast. I went here for a coworker's going away party. .I was excited to try a new spot for barbecue in Texas. This was by far the worst barbecue I've had in Texas my coworker who even suggested the place where everyone was disappointed at the way the food was that day. Maybe it was just a bad day and I'll have to return and try it another time. This restaurant was on the Diners, Drive-In's and Dives and got a favorable rating from Guy F. My wife and I have visited 35 of the top 50 BBQ places in Texas from the latest Texas Monthly magazine so I would say we have a good idea what BBQ should taste like. We ordered all the meats and 5 sides and also had both sauces. I am sorry , we don't see what Guy F. was seeing as this bbq joint is not one we would ever go back to. The BBQ here is awsome, always great tasking and the atmosphere and live music is a huge plus. The staff are rude and uncaring aside from the bartender. If you can tolerate the incredibly rude people behind the counter when you walk in it's worth it. Advice - hire people that want to be there, remove those with attitude. Review your security footage to see how they treat people. Eating out is an expense experience now, people don't want the be treated like crap. read more

Meh. We decided to forego coming back to this BBQ place when there are so many great others in San Antonio. I am inlove with the look of the place! Kudos to whomever thought of it. It's a great place to explore and visit for country pics. The food wasn't bad. The brisket was really moist. What broke it for me was the feel of the place, tone and overall atmosphere. The staff seems disinterested but to their credit, they all seem like young millennials working a job and nothing wrong with that. However, I like BBQ places to have a warm, down home welcoming feeling to accompany my food experience. This place looks like it is a music venue. That might be a better option; we would have to try it one day. But for the restaurant part, we decided to go elsewhere for a different feel. Food is good tho. read more

Had very high hopes for this rare outing with my family. First noticeable thing was that NONE of the people working were wearing masks which is really unacceptable in this environment. I had my wife and kids wait outside in the playground while I ordered. First thing, I was told that they were out of ribs and brisket (the two things I was planning on ordering). I ordered pulled pork, sausage, and turkey. I also got an upgrade of peach cobbler instead of another side. I am not exaggerating when I say everything was bordering on cold. The warmest item was the side of beans! Although the flavors were ok, everything was off-putting because it was cold. I recently started working in LaVernia and on the way home from work we decided to check out Texas Pride. It just showed on a rerun of Diners, Drive Inns and Dives. We always wanted to try so we went in. Prices are reasonable but oh boy, that food. It was terrible. The bbq sauce tasted like tomato sauce more than BBQ sauce. I grew up in the area and i've seen this place go down hill the past few years. I flew back home for the weekend and decided to eat here with my family because I was craving barbecue. First thing I noticed was how dead it was for a saturday night. The second thing I noticed was that every employee behind the counter serving food had a tone while speaking to us. You can see the annoyance in their eyes as they try to rush you around the line as quickly as they can. They don't like questions. Some was amazing and some was dry. I'd still go back if I was in the area. But, probably would not make a special trip. They have lemonade and iced tea so perfect for an Arnold palmer. Was able to bring my wife and kids with me on this current trip back to San Antonio. Been hyping up Texas Pride up to my wife and was completely disappointed on this visit back for lunch. We got the brisket, pork ribs, and cheddar sausage...everything was super dry this time around, so much that we didn't bother to finish our food and just tossed it in the garbage. And when I say dry...I'm talking like zero moisture or juices flowing out the meats, and sauce was necessary just to swallow it down. Stopped by for the first time to pick up some dinner...could have sworn they were closed, as it's a huge place but there was only 1 car in the lot. Not a sound to be heard as I was walking in, so when I saw a young lady, I had to ask if they were even open. Lucky for me they were. I got the 1/3 lbs chopped brisket sandwich, Mac & cheese, and pecan cobbler to go. Traffic was heavy on the way to my hotel, so the bun was too soggy to eat when I got back. No problem, that's my fault. I ate the meat, pickles & onions and it was delicious. The Mac & cheese was good, but there were a few spots that were dried out. I had never heard of pecan cobbler before but that was delicious. It was a little more expensive than other local BBQ spots. The young lady working was really friendly, so that was nice. Have you ever worked with someone who received a promotion and immediately their personality changed and they became too big for their britches? It's amazing how a little bit of recognition can go to someone's head and occasionally spoil a friendship. The same thing happened to Texas Pride. I discovered this formerly small and iconic BBQ joint when I moved to South Central Texas in 2004 and it quickly became my go-to place for taking friends and family. I loved the friendly employees, the good food, and the off-the-charts cool atmosphere. The restaurant has always been welcoming to bikers and large groups, and they created a super fun place to visit with their quirky Friday night fish fry, old signage, kids playground, and middle-of-nowhere location and acreage about 5 miles off the beaten path outside San Antonio. I don't recall exactly when the episode aired, sometime around 2009 I think, but Guy Fieri and DDD discovered Texas Pride. Overnight, customers started landing in helicopters to sample the BBQ. The restaurant expanded and built a virtual city under a roof behind the original structure where they now have bike washes and concerts. They reorganized the layout so you can no longer sit in booths near the serving area to watch them slice the meat. They have an honest to goodness searchlight mounted on the roof of the building near picnic tables where you can eat on the balcony on cool nights. The attitude of the workers went from friendly / local / fun to big-time / business / move-along. And their prices? They raised their prices higher than their newly inflated egos. I probably wouldn't feel this way about Texas Pride if I hadn't visited them before they became so well known. The food is very good (not quite great), but considering we're located in one of the three or four BBQ Meccas in the U.S., it's perfectly acceptable and they hold their own against some serious competition. Their fresh cut fries are always a favorite of mine (you have to wait for them, they are fried after you place the order), and the pinto beans go great with everything. Have you ever tried pecan cobbler? If not, you should. The newly designed and almost overbuilt restaurant is quite perfect for large groups. They can accommodate a wedding or a band of Harley riders equally well, and probably at the same time. The classic old gas station exterior just begs for you to pose for a picture and the inviting playground will have the kids whining to return. You won't find a cooler place to visit and the fantastic atmosphere is easily worth 5 stars. The BBQ isn't the very best, but it's not bad, a solid 3+ star experience. My only real complaint is that I miss the good ole days, but I suppose I could say that about a lot of things in my life. read more

Every Thursday from 6:30 - 10:30 PM is Bike Night. Check the website for concert information. The meat and the sauce are fantastic. My favorites are the brisket and sausage. They grind their own sausage and make their own sauce every day. but you can't go wrong no matter what meat or meats you select. The sides are also fantastic. Not after thoughts like some places. I've been a regular customer for about 3 years now. They're very consistent for my visits. I almost always do takeouts and get quick service each time. The place does crazy business on nights when they're hosting events so i personally avoid those times. Our "go to" meats are brisket and jalapeño sausage. The brisket is moist and somewhat fatty (could be even more so for me) and almost always tender cooked. The jalapeño sausage has just the right mix of spice and fat. For dessert, the pecan gobbler is gooey sweet good. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. This place is a strong recommend. read more

I finally got my happy-azz out to this place after a full year of saying I would! Some of my wonderful co-workers have brought me bbq from this place, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but this was my first time sitting down at the joint. I ordered: bbq sandwich, 4 meat place (1/2lb turkey, 1 sausage, and 4 ribs), cheezy potatoes, mac 'm cheese, and green beans. A lot of FOOD! I ate the bbq sandwich on site as well as a couple of bites of everything else. I bought a lot to take home for the boyf and lunch the next day. I thoroughly enjoyed the sandwich. The menu said the sandwich is on a sourdough bun, but it tastes more like a Hawaiian roll. Still tasty though and the "normal" is HUGE! I can't even imagine the "jumbo." The sausage was equally tasty (not amazing) but I do love the ribs! Ribs fall off the bone and the crispy bits at the end are scrumptious. My friend gave me some brisket, which was good and fatty, but not amazing. When I brought the turkey home to my boyf, he said it was good, but similar to Rudy's! *o-well* I actually think the sides play an integral role at this place. The cheezy potatoes are super cheezy and is perfect! The mac/cheese was a tad dry but the green beans were well seasoned. I also took a bite of the pecan pie cobbler - WOW! I am going to duplicate this crack at home!! The main thing the place needs to improve on is their bbq sauces. I didn't think the "spicy" was spicy enough and the regular sauce was too tomatoe-y. BLUF: Absolutely delicious barbecue that definitely appeals to my Texas Pride. I have one word for this place: WOW. At first glance, this restaurant just looks like an abandoned old gas station and shack, but wow was I deeply mistaken. The inside has been completely remodeled to embody that true Texan spirit- benches with long tables, an open rodeo pit in the back, and plenty of space that I'm sure is open for dancing on the weekends. This place truly embodies everything that is great about Texas. And the staff were so nice when taking our orders and guiding us through their recommendations for food options. I got the meat plate with some brisket, mac & cheese, and German potato salad and this was to die for. The brisket was so tender it just melted in my mouth, packed with so much deep, smokey flavor! The mac and cheese was rich and savory; the potato salad, a perfect combo with bacon intertwined. Just thinking about this makes my mouth water. I came here after getting recommendations from quite a few people when they heard I was in SA to visit, but I wasn't impressed with the food. It looks really cool from the outside, and I love the large seating area outside. I was served quickly and the people working were all very friendly and helpful. But I was pretty disappointed with the sides - the green beans, mac and cheese, and potatoes were all pretty bland, nothing you couldn't get at a million other fast casual restaurants. But none of that matters if the meat is good right?! That was the one redeeming aspect. I got the brisket (they offer it both fattier or less fatty, I got fattier, should have gotten it less) but it was flavored well and so tender. I like my bbq with a good sauce, and again was pretty disappointed. They has a regular and a spicy, I couldn't really tell a difference. And they were pretty unremarkable. The quality of BBQ in a restaurant is directly proportional to its distance from civilization. After months of anticipation, the opportunity arose for me to try out Texas Pride on the way east on I-10 to Houston. As a bbq newb, this is the farthest I've traveled for bbq yet. My Hungry Texan meal consisted of brisket, ribs, sausage, and turkey. Brisket is the definition of bbq and deserves the most consideration. The most important brisket was as tender as I've ever had. Better than Rudy's. The sausage had stronger seasoning than other bbq joints and at least as good. Turkey is not a very exciting meat but was also on par with other restaurants. The ribs were disappointingly flavorless. With the meal came 4 sides of which I chose: cheesy potatoes, pinto beans, potato salad, macaroni salad. All were good, but the macaroni salad were outstanding. On average, the sides were more impressive than the meats. Of less significance, utensils, sauce, bread are all self-service. The sauce is on the sweeter side and the onions were fresh. I noticed some loaves of bread were non-generic brand :) The service is also very friendly. I didn't have any beer (Scott S said cans of Shiner were $7?!) Personally, I would make a point of eating here on the way to/from Houston but their prices and vicinity from town mean that is the only time I'll come around. read more

Cute place for photos and antique decor. We got the nachos and something else and I would have like to put my own additional sauce on them, but they were good. Live music is always nice. It's in the middle of nowhere and a bit of a drive for us so more of a destination location and I'm not sure we would go back but I do love to take pics so I wouldn't mine seeing it before sun set And they do seem to have a variety of events and music so maybe I'd go again. My sister and two nieces stopped in to this establishment to eat lunch....I was very disappointed....the bbq chicken was dry and looked like it was sitting under a heat lamp for several hours....the beef ribs were dry....the brisket was okay, but nothing to brag about...the sides looked more like left overs from earlier in the day....and the peach cobbler was very disappointing, there was more thick soggy crust than there were peaches....I encouraged my group to stop there to eat because I had heard great reviews....however that was not the case on Sunday 5/21/23...I don't think I will visit this establishment again.... read more

I was disappointed because you would expect the owner to make guests welcomed. We were on our way back to Houston from Concan, Texas and found this place. We got there around 1pm and the place was a little dead. The place needs some deep cleaning. I think Houston has better BBQ in my opinion. The baked potatoes were not it, Mac and cheese was alright. We stopped in here around 4:30, after a long afternoon of walking around the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. My husband loves old gas stations and memorabilia, so this was right up his alley! After taking a number of photos of the front of the building, we went inside and ordered the Hungry Texan for Two. It comes with 4 sides and bread. It was so much food, we ended up taking half the meat home! All of the meats were good, especially the brisket and ribs. For sides we picked the mac and cheese, cheesy potatoes, creamed corn and peach cobbler (for a small upcharge). The mac and cheese was mediocre...seemed like it had been sitting out all day as the cheese wasn't creamy at all, kinda dried in bits on the macaroni. The creamed corn was delicious!!! The cheesy potatoes were good...had bacon in them too! My husband really enjoyed the peach cobbler. The BBQ sauces were good; I enjoyed the regular and my husband really liked the spicy. They have bottled beers and sodas available, and lemonade and tea in the diningroom. After we ate, we went around back to check out the stage and other memorabilia. Very cool setup out back. They have live music on the weekends. Overall, we really enjoyed the atmosphere and (most of) the food here. If we're ever in the area again, we would definitely return. read more

I was really on the fence with two stars I wanted to give it three Stars based on the cobbler alone. The barbecue is just meh, it's not outstanding, it ain't overwhelming it's just decent and based on where it's at and how long it takes to get there it's really not a great experience. Now if you're looking for live entertainment or maybe an overall different kind of dining experience it's okay. The food is expensive it's not cheap, at least the price isn't. I know now why I've only been here once most definitely will never come back and that's not knocking it, it's just that there's too many other good barbecue restaurants in San Antonio that don't require a drive. Even if it was across the street I still probably wouldn't go it's okay it's not mind blowing it isn't extraordinary and I can't for the life of me remember why they had it on dinners Drive-Ins and Dives but I guess I'll Google it and find out.
