Texas Pride is a destination BBQ restaurant- destination because it a really big place ( more like a compound!) located in Adkins, Texas outside of San Antonio almost 6 miles from the 1604 exit. If it is so far out... why is it so darned popular? The food is amazing! I stand firm saying the ribs at Texas Pride are the best in the country- okay, maybe the world! Someone has to be on top, right? The BBQ sauce is also the best thing in my opinion! I am not a big brisket eater, however, I had some last night and the meat was flavorful and so very BBQ-ed! I had the macaroni and cheese, Cole slaw and pecan pie cobbler. The beans are perfect, and they have much more to choose from as well as nachos! I have driven out to Texas Pride just for the cobbler in the past! Imagine pecan pie but as a cobbler- yeah it's pretty yummo. Texas Pride has bands every Friday and Saturday night with dancing and wholesome fun. On those nights expect to see the parking lot helpers on horses! This place has been on Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives, as well as the Real Housewives of Orange County - the latter was fun to watch because as one of the housewives ate the pecan cobbler the others yelled at her to stop eating it! Great bbq! Atmosphere is electric too. Especially on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Food is great quality and the brisket is so tender a fork cuts through it, the bbq pork ribs fall off the bone. I have lived in the area for 12 years. Back when this was the place to go for really good BBQ!! Two years ago it was pretty good! Last year it was maybe alright. Now after spending over $ 50.00 for take out for two people. We got sausage. Looked and tasted like it was heated in the microwave, yuck. We bought 1/2 rack baby back ribs not Smokey at all!!. Tasted like baked in the oven, Tender enough were ok- NOT 17.00 a pound good BY any means. The Brisket- it tasted like roastt!! NOTHING LIKE BBQ SHOULD TASTE!!! The brisket was almost tender. I also bought two sides- NOT THE SOUPY old looking COLESLAW offered! I did get the Mac n Cheese, it was- ok. The other side was the German potato salad, tasteless!!!! BBQ sauce still Good. Beans - lukewarm, bacon potatoes were good. One slice of bread was dried out, but other two slices were soft. SOOOOOO DISAPPOINTING! Just moved here from NY, so we were really excited to try some awesome BBQ. That was not the case at Texas Pride. We ordered our food which came on paper. PAPER? Anyways, once we were seated with our school lunch tray, we dug in to eat. ALL of our food was cold . Not even luke warm. Not ONE piece of food was warm, seasoned or tasty. Mac and Cheese - highly recommend! Cheesy, perfectly crisped edges. Go early, because this one does run out! Creamed corn. GET IN MY BELLY! I could have souped this up in my mouth. Put a little BBQ on it... it adds a nice flare to it! Also, this one runs out as well! The pecan crumble! I'm not a huge sweets person, and I went back for more. The brisket was tough, very dry (even though I asked for moist), and it could not be cut with the plastic knife provided. The sausage was a very fine grind - almost bologna - not a fan. Run from this place! Not only was this the worst bbq I have ever had in Texas, this was the worst restaurant I have tried in the history of my Yelp experience (hundreds of reviews over 4 yrs). Let's put it in another way: I only paid $5 for $25 worth of bbq with one of those 50% off coupons and a second coupon, and it wasn't even worth the $5, plus the 15 miles to drive there. My phone is at the cell store, so I couldn't take my normal detailed pics. I ordered 3/4 lb marbled/fatty brisket, as I heard the lean is always super dry here. I also ordered 1/2 lb baby back ribs and a pecan cobbler, which they said "was to die for." My total was $25.75. All meats are $14.99/lb. Brisket: grossly greasy and fatty with surface fat, not visceral rendered fat. It wasn't even cut right. It was like it was "pulled" into strands like a fatty pot roast that had been stewing in its own fat in a crock pot all day. They use a poor quality meat here for the brisket. I have never seen even fatty brisket take this shape at any bbq restaurant in Texas. The Fatty Brisket here has no Redeeming Value! Baby back ribs: greasy, flavorless, and physically "cold" at 12 noon on a Tuesday. To their credit, they were tender and fall off the bone. I think all these meats are very greasy because in the brisket's case, they were not well rendered, and then they sit under these heat lamps behind this glass just stewing in the grease-laded air trapped in there. I can't understand why those ribs were cold at 12 noon. The bbq sauce was watery and flavorless. The spicy has no spice. The "to die for" pecan cobbler: very dry and unimpressive. I should have gone with the peach cobbler, as it would have probably been juicier with syrup or peach juice. Love the mismatched decor and ordering was pretty straightforward. Now, the food was a disappointment. Not a lot of flavor not really that hot neither. We were brought here by family when we were in town visiting from Chicago and I was a bit disappointed given the hype. The meat itself was fine but I thought the barbecue sauces were mediocre at best. Plus, they were just sitting out all day in heated metal tubs in a buffet area: one labeled regular and one labeled "hot" though I couldn't really tell the difference. I've definitely had tastier sauces back in Chicago, and this is Texas: one of the great barbecue states! I've been to Texas pride in the past when they were on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and I was not impressed but let me tell you I went back recently after some years had passed and the food is good! I had chopped brisket sliders with coleslaw and they were so filling and delicious. I wish I had taken a picture. The staff is not wearing masks so if you are a Karen and have issues with that just stay home! It's hot in there already they don't need the drama. I wish I could give Texas Pride at least 2 stars for their mediocre food but after the horrible experience we've just had with the owner I'm downgrading to one. First of all- everyone in our party of 8 agreed that the food was all plain and VERY cold. Yummy! The choices are broad (but not an overload) and the taste is definitely on point. You can choose 1 meat/2 sides, 2 meats/2 sides, 3 meats, etc or choose between their family specials. Pricing is average-ish - I got 2 meats/2 sides and plus drink, you're probably talking about 13 bucks give or take. It was a lot of food! I got pork ribs and turkey (my sides were mac salad and cheesy 'tatos) and I couldn't even finish it all. The sauce comes in regular and hot and the hot wasn't even hot at all - it just had a little 'kick' if anything. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it was bad, I'm just saying not to expect habenero hot or anything. And the 'hot' cue sauce complemented the meats better than the regular sauce did. A lot of interesting things to look at and take notice of as well. Signs, signs everywhere - including one that says they were featured on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-ins and Drive Thrus". And then when you walk up to the entranceway of the place, you see this humongous poster with Guy's autograph and a personal message about Texas Pride. Think it and they have it - macaroni cheese pie, green beans, mustard potato salad, German potato salad (my favorite... like a semi-mashed, slightly sweet taste of nirvana), slaw, pinto beans, pasta salad, so on and so forth. And if you're in a generous mood (or simply losing your mind because BBQ's the only thing capable of saving your soul), Pride's "Texas Tailgater" deal is where it's at. A hefty transaction of $180 lets you walk away confidently with 3 pounds of brisket, 2 pounds of sausage, 2 racks of baby back ribs, 1 pound of some poor turkey's breasts, 4 sides (each quart-sized), plus 1 quart of hot cobbler (I recommend giving their Pecan Cobbler a go!). Why pay, say, Time Warner Cable 180 quality bucks when you can instead nourish your body [and select others' bodies] with THE best BBQ this side of SA? If $180 is out of the question, Pride's daily specials are always a grab, including their sandwich, taco, wrap and, of course, kids' deals. Parking's no issue; the entire land is your playground. Enter and order and pay immediately. Then make your way past the condiment stand. Dine inside or mosey on through the back door and into Pride's MASSIVE outdoor hangout space. All covered and open-air, this is everyone's preferred eating area save for during Texas's peak summer months when even 9 PM still has you sweating in 90° weather. Texas Pride displays its fair share of memorabilia from the old pin head style gas pumps to the accompanying oil company signs like Sinclair and Sunoco. Inside, the inclined wooden ramp leads you up a narrow corridor to the barbecue serving station where you can select your meat and sides as you please. Well suited for the weekend crowds, I'm sure, but for the lone wanderer seeking out a quick lunch it's a little creepy. That's okay, I brought my woobie. Once in front of the counter, the meats and sides are in full display behind a butcher's case for you to choose your carnivorous pleasures. Helpful menu boards above provide plate and by the pound pricing or some handy family pack options if you have traveled 15 miles from civilization to the middle of nowhere to grab some food for the hungry chickadees back at the nest. Hopefully you brought them with you. The seasonal Friday night fish fry's are legendary, as we all know, but I didn't come here for the fried fish. Brisket. Top drawer. Moist, succulent, and well seasoned on the crispy outer edges. The counter guy acknowledged my barbecue acumen when I asked for the marbled end and informed me that he has gained twenty pounds since he started working there, from his new found love for barbecue. We compared stomachs and then it just got to be too awkward so I settled down with my meat and sauce to have lunch in private. Plenty of sides options, I'd go with the fries and if you're a mac-n-cheese person that'd be a good choice too. The sweet tea will give you diabeetus but you've just downed enough saturated fat to kill a defensive lineman so that's probably not a concern. They do offer a choice in sauce Neither packed any heat regardless of the caution contrary to that. Styrofoam dishes, plastic fork and knife and eat off of butcher paper. My 2 meat 2 side lunch with drink before tip was $15.00 with tax. The great news is the 10% discount for checking in on Yelp! If the food had been as I remembered the price would never have been an issue. I get better Bar B Q in Portland or Seattle.
