I'll cut to the chase- 4 stars for the food, 3 stars for service and ambiance. True Texas BBQ isn't often in our radar- it's just that, when we think of grabbing a bite, the supermarket isn't the first place that comes to mind. It's good though, so don't blank it like we so often do. Today we tried the new "limited time" smoked lamb pitas- 2 pitas for $12.99- and we really enjoyed them! They're a bit like a shawarma, cumin notes and a bit of a mild heat. The pickled red onions were a nice touch. Great value- we each had a pita and were totally satisfied. Where else can two people dine on a lovely lamb sandwich for $12.99?! Bargain! The girl at the counter could use some training. A little less side-eye and a little more pleasantness would probably enhance the customer experience. We asked for a dessert recommendation to take home after our meal, and she said "I don't know, I don't eat anything here." Even if she doesn't eat there, she could have said something like "X is our most popular dessert" or "People really love Y." Nobody needs to wonder why an employee doesn't eat the food she sells. It could be dietary restrictions or it could be something she's witnessed in the kitchen, but nobody needs to know regardless of the reason. The nicest ambiance is on the patio, so I recommend that if the weather is nice. The main dining area is nothing special at all. Next time you go to HEB, don't forget about the delicious bbq tucked away in the corner! read more

I love the BBQ brisket nachos. The brisket has nice smoke flavor and sits atop a bed of crispy tortilla chips and creamy mild cheese sauce. It is topped with Jalapeños. Careful though. HEB has good peppers. If you don't like spice have them on the side. The rest of the food is normal Texas BBQ. Not my favorite but will do in a pinch. The bar though! Again, great idea! Decided to try the Too Good To Go Surprise Bag from True Texas BBQ, knowing that I'd just hop back in line and order some extra things based off of what wasn't included in my surprise bags. From the moment I parked in the HEB lot, the sound of live music lifted my spirits and had me excited to finally check this place out (because there isn't one at my usual HEB). Both surprise bags came with pulled pork, baked potato, creamed corn, and strawberry cobbler. Walking in, I was greeted at the ordering counter by Mike, who was very hospitable and kind. After confirming pickup for my TGTG order, I made my way around the corner to the pickup counter, where Jason politely pushed my order through the pass through window. After taking a quick peak into my bags, I knew it was time to hop back in line to order the baby bear some macaroni (medium side) and ordering myself the peach cobbler for research purposes, since I'm a Georgia girl. Mike and Jason continued to be kind the second time through, and Jason even offered a bigger bag to hold all three of my to go orders and the baby bear at the same time. The macaroni was delicious. My little baby bear was laughing out loud and had a jolly good old time eating half of the medium sized side by himself. It's sooooo creamy. The peach cobbler was what you'd expect from a bbq chain- it's clearly made with canned peaches and has inconsistent texture throughout, but it'll do and has decent flavor for being made in Texas. The creamed corn was delicious! It has a nice kick to it and a strong bbq flavor, like they decided to roast it alongside the brisket. I could eat a whole side of that by itself and be perfectly content. Pulled pork - juicy and full of flavor! Honestly, you could eat it plain or put it on a sandwich. It's solid either way! If I had a big enough appetite to eat it all, I'd just load up the baked potato with the creamed corn and pulled pork and have that as a meal! The strawberry cobbler was reminiscent of making a cake in a mug with some canned strawberry pie filling. It tastes good. Obviously not an actual cobbler since it has more of a cake-like flavor and consistency, but it does taste good. Honestly, I think the strawberry dessert tastes better than the peach dessert. You won't be disappointed if you just view them as desserts instead of cobblers. I loved trying something new with the Too Good To Go App and the surprise of not knowing what was in the bag was delightful. I'll definitely order their surprise bag again, but I'll probably just do one next time since it seems like all surprise bags for that time frame receive identical items. read more

They have indoor and outdoor seating and live music is available too which makes the experience so much better. I got the two meat plate. I usually get regular brisket but feel like it can be a little dry, I decided to switch it up and try the chopped brisket and I actually really enjoyed it! It was a barbecue kind of dinner tonight @truetexasbbq on Wilderness Oak. It was simple, inexpensive yet good tasting! Sometimes they would have live music out on the patio. Not tonight though. Dad and I shared the 2 Meat Plate with both fatty brisket, creamed corn and fruit cup. Love their barbecue sauce! My husband had the 2 Meat Plate with quarter dark chicken and fatty brisket, potato salad and side salad. The total bill was not even $35! With the rising cost of food, somehow @truetexasbbq is able to maintain the low prices and great quality. If you've not tried their barbecue, you ought to check them out soon! read more

There aren't many BBQ places on this side of town sadly. The ones I have tried fail to live up to the Texas tradition. AFter watching the review of one of these True Texas BBQ places by one of my favorite YouTube infuencers (ArnieTex) I thought I would give this one a try. We arrived during the lunch hour and surprisingly the place was nearly deserted which was concerning. However we forged ahead. We wanted to get a good cross section of the BBQ along with the sides so we ordered plates. The wife got the one meat plate and it came with 2 sides. She got the brisket creamed corn and potato salad. I got the two meat plate with beans and creamed corn. I found out later the beans are called brisket beans. I missed that at the start somehow. I will start with the beans. I found the beans to have a lot of fat. Chunks of fat. I assume from brisket. There was NO meat other than fat, a lot of fat. They tasted a little sour, not sure what spice they used to get that. Overall they were just ok. I would pass on them next time. Not of fan of adding things other than traditional spices to beans. The creamed corn was different to. It was ok. I tried a bite if the wife's potato salad and that was a great choice. AS for the star of the show, the brisket. It was very tasty, with just a hint of smoke which was indicated by an almost non existant smoke ring. There were two very thick slices of brisket. Half the slice was fat. With that much fat I was surprised how dry the meat was. I also had a link of sausage. It was very heavy on the black pepper. I like black pepper but this was a little overpowering. We left full, which might seem strange with all the things I picked on. Yes, I'm a BBQ snob. We weren't unhappy at all and it is the best brisket we have found in this area. The rub they use is on point. If course when we are hungry for brisket again this place will likely be our choice. read more

So if you're thinking a BBQ joint that is part of HEB might not be a legit, slow smoked, Texas style BBQ winner...my friend...think again! I have been a number of times now and I have not had a bad meal from True Texas BBQ. The brisket (the only true meat you can order to tell the authenticity of a BBQ restaurant) is smoky and tender. They have a nice big menu and even have burgers. The Mac and cheese is a solid choice for a side. I find the prices are a bit better than most places out there, and with brisket prices going up as fast as gas prices, "a bit better" is a win! My tip here, if you are a big eater, is to Texas Size your sandwich. It's $4 more but you get a heckuva big sando! I saw a guy walk by with the same sandwich I got but not Texas sized and when he saw mine I think he got a little tear in his eye. He knew, and I knew, I out-sandwiched him. Don't get out-sandwiched! The store is inconsistent when it comes to orders through DoorDash. This store does not pay attention and consistently added things to orders that were not requested. For example, when ordered the fully loaded cornbread I did not request beans and this store loaded my order with beans even though I did not select beans. This has happened three times. The store needs to do better and employees need to pay attention. read more

Five stars for the excellent 'que here. Located inside H-E-B this used to be the Oaks Crossing restaurant and recently reopened as True Texas BBQ. I was a little disappointed as I liked the former restaurant but once I tried a few things I'm happy to have them in the neighborhood! They kept the bar area and you can still order some of the previous menu items so it's a win-win. The tomahawk pork chop is a must try! It's only available on Saturday after 5pm. Sometimes they will have it earlier in the afternoon but it's not guaranteed. It's big, huge, and juicy. With the peppercorn rub this bad boy will set you back $14 and is well worth every penny. It's full of flavor and practically falls off the bone it's so tender. It's enough to share-or not! The half chicken is also a winner. For $6.50 I had enough to take half home. The Pitmaster, Mag, came over and introduced himself. Very nice man and we told him how much we enjoyed the BBQ and will definitely be back in the near future. Service at the counter was acceptable. The ambiance was okay. They were out of a couple of meat items - lean brisket and turkey, which was okay. I really wanted to try the collard greens side, which was okay, but nothing special. The other sides were okay as well, just nothing to write home about (brisket beans, mac and cheese, and fried okra). My main issue was with the portion sizes, especially the meat portions. My wife and I each ordered a one meat plate for $11.99 per plate. She ordered sausage and I ordered brisket. The sausage was a small link, and I received one slice of brisket. This might have been acceptable for a child's plate, but certainly not for an adult. The sides look larger than they really are as the bottom of the containers are inset about a centimeter above the bottom of the cup. We will not be back. I ordered nachos they were dry no cheese sauce on them and all the chips were broken like it was the bottom of the bag. there was a lady in the back whom was preparing the food chewing gum with her mouth wide open all while holding her phone to her ear with her gloves on a hairnet with all her hair hanging out of it and wearing slipper shoes on no hygiene at all and the worst bbq I've ever had food was cold and the staff in the back was rushing to clean at 7 spraying stuff all over the counter rather than focusing on serving the customers do better H-E-B! Time to retrain the staff and that lady gotta go she's a liability to your company.
