Stuffed Crab, Fried Frog Leg, Fried Shrimp, Fried Oyster plate

Today I took a mini road trip to Caldwell for a Seafood Feast at Texas Seafood & Steak. Started with a medium Seafood Gumbo, followed by tender fresh fried Shrimp right out o de Gulf! After enjoying some Crawfish Fry Rice and Crab Fry Rice containing large chunks of Fresh Crab, Fried Scallops & Fried Frog Leg then joined my Feast. A Stuffed Crab which was as good as I ate in a Biloxi Casino, Eggrolls and Seasoned Fries then were added to the mix. Delectable Creamy Cole Slaw competed this Seafood Feast fit for a Chinese Emperor! The Wandering Gourmand, Dr Wiley Coyote SFO...

Delicious Beef Fried Rice... oh my goodness, it is soo good!

So, for a mom and pop local restaurant they have a lot on the menu to choose from, and everyone in our various parties usually gets different things, never a complaint, only satisfied eaters! Today my beef fried rice was awesome, packed with flavors and the beef seemed to be hand cut in the kitchen. My son's sirloin was cooked to perfection, great flavor, he said it was a bit tough, but the restaurant has no control over the cow! Staff is always polite and on point, and as Sly's one of the cleanest in Caldwell... at least the dining room and parking lot, they've never let me in the back, so I'm taking that as a given.

Service was horrible. Drinks took 30 min. Food is always good. Service is slow every time we go!

Ordered the super grilled jumbo shrimp with veggies, rice, and a garden salad. Food was really good, fresh, and service was great.

Service can be spotty at times, but they try. But the food is really really good. Specially, for the area.

It's very country looking, so that was appealing. We started with the fried pickles for an appetizer to share. Our group was a party of 3. The pickles were a perfect split for us. The ranch served with the pickles had a tartar sauce undertone taste. It was pretty good. We all had the sweet tea and lemonade mix. It was refreshing. I ordered the regular JW's burger on a classic white bun. The burger was okay. There was no special seasoning to it. I wasn't able to order it medium. From the looks of it, it was "done", so that is a little too done for me. I like mine a little pink. They use leaf lettuce. I prefer shredded. The pickles on my burger were cut lengthwise, and 2 of the strips still had the outer skin on them. Not a fan of that. The fries were good. They had a nice crunch to them. The service was great at JW's. Our drinks were never empty, the food came out fast, and our waitress was very nice. You can't get better than country service. It was a nice change from Houston where everything is hustle and bustle. We all three split a piece of coconut pie. It was okay, but to be fair, I am not a pie person. My coworkers thought it was terrific. If I am out that way again and decide to stop in, I will order something different. Maybe the chicken fried steak. The neighboring table ordered it and it looked good! Our bill for the 3 of us was $71 and some change before tip. That seems on point for 1 appetizer, 3 drinks, 3 entrees, and 1 piece of pie. It was crowded, especially for a weekday after the lunch rush in the country, so they must be doing something right.

Then the garlic mash potatoes and PERFECTLY cooked 10 oz sirloin came out. The steaks were cooked exactly to order. They had a pristine flavor, and the meat just melted in my mouth. The yeast roll looked like a roll but it was pretty heavenly too, especially with the steak drippings. Our server was super sweet and helpful! This time I was able to arrange to be here on a Saturday expressly to visit Leona. It was a 2 hour drive down from Dallas but hey, it's an adventure! I was not disappointed. I got there about an hour before they opened and there were 30-40 people in line already. I grabbed a spot on one of the benches that line the porch and watched more people pouring in. Over the next hour the line got longer and longer. I definitely got there none too soon. At opening time the nice lady came out and started bringing in each party one at a time. It moves fast and I was seated pretty quickly. The place is pretty huge so they seat a lot of people at a time. Judy Lee was my very sweet server and she kept me checked on and my tea glass full the whole time The "salad bar" is pretty simple. Just lettuce with a few tomatoes and the obviously homemade dressings. There is also slaw which was VERY good. The steak came with a scoop of mashed potatoes and a yeast roll. The streak is definitely the star of the show. The standard size is 10 oz with the option to add additional oz's. I opted for a 14 oz version which was probably closer to 20. They don't cut you short by any means. I have to say that this was one of the best and most perfectly cooked steaks I have ever had. I have had my share of prime restaurant steaks and this rivaled them all. Juicy, tender and perfectly cooked. It had the largest rib cap of any steak I have ever seen. Simply delicious. A 4 hour round trip for dinner might be a bit much but really worth it for the experience. If I find myself somewhere a little closer I'll be doing it again.

Pulling up to Roadhouse felt like I was about to film a low-budget country music video. The aggressively unpretentious energy was immaculate. The all-dirt parking lot said everything! No curated patio, no aesthetic succulents just straight up vibes and dust. The place was packed at 1 p.m. Our server, Raven, took great care of us from the jump. Rave was very efficient, friendly, and had zero attitude. We ordered a basket of fries, a portobello mushroom burger for me, a cheeseburger, a Philly cheesesteak, upgraded side salads, and, of course, their famous carrot cake to share. Now, let me confess something: As a Californian, I walked in with absolutely zero expectations given the facade. And yet... the fries were perfect. The portobello burger was juicy, well-seasoned, and very satisfying! My friends inhaled their cheeseburger and Philly like they were participating in a competitive sport. Lol. And don't even get me started with their carrot cake. It was disrespectfully delicious! This was seriously the most humbling "don't judge a book by its cover" moment I've had in a while. Roadhouse doesn't need any curated lighting or a reclaimed-wood Instagram wall because the food and service speak for themselves. I drove into a dirt lot with skepticism and left faceplanted by my own bias. Consider me corrected, Bastrop!
