I've been here many times throughout the year with my co-workers because they wanted to go. Never liked it much, and visited again last night after about 5 years. I had the crispy garlic pepper chicken and my husband had the short ribs. My chicken was cooked so much it was barely edible, as well as being tasteless. His ribs were a little better, but not much. Not very flavorful and also overcooked. Decor has been updated in the past few year and it looks nice. The server was very nice. That's why 2 stars instead of 1. Food was not good. ***6-21-16 Update: The owner/manager of Thai Beer wrote me a very nice message and offered to refund our money, as well as look into ways to make the two dishes we had better. I am so impressed with this display of outstanding customer service, so I am updating my stars to reflect this. And I do have to say, I know many people who love this restaurant and I'm going to give it another shot. They are definitely trying to please the customer! read more

Food and service were likely the worst we have ever encountered. 1. The table we were seated at was wobbly. Seriously wobbly. Decor was dated and peculiar. 2. It took at least 10 minutes to order drinks. Our waiter (Alex) seemed bored and perhaps socially awkward. We had to flag him down to order and he never checked on us after we received our food. 3. We ordered four dishes. They came out in rapid speed - this was weird - as if they had everything pre-made and just warmed the food up when ordered. The dishes ranged from mediocre to downright disgusting. Pad Thai was sans limes and peanuts. More importantly is was a weird pink color - looked completely unappetizing and tasted sickly. Nam Kao Tod Salad was advertised as including crispy rice - there was nothing crispy about this dish - instead it had the texture of paste. Lemongrass chicken consisted of iceberg lettuce with plain chicken smothered (seriously smothered) in peanut sauce. It looked disgusting and tasted worse. Interestingly, there was no lemongrass on the dish and not a hint of lemongrass flavor. When we asked Alex (our waiter) if he brought us the right dish as there was an absence of lemongrass he said "we marinate the chicken in lemongrass and then WASH IT OFF." We were dumbfounded by this remark and stared incredulously. He then stated "I know because I've seen them make it" and walked away abruptly. WTF??? If you want good Asian food head over to Super Pho or Lan Xang. We have yet to have a bad meal at either of these places. read more

Like a lot of the other reviewers said, the sauce (in pad Thai and drunken noodles) is weird. I think they use a tomato paste base? I've not been to Thailand, so I'm not an expert, but it's literally unlike any other Thai food I've had before. The price per portion is pretty good. read more

Ate here for the first time on July 21st, 2011. The restaurant is shoddy in appearance, the tables are pitted, crooked and wobbly. The seat cushions are in desperate need of reupholstering, and the artwork on the walls looks like it hasn't seen a dust rag in months. We were seated upon arrival and given a scant 2 minutes to look at the menu before we were asked to order. We ordered some appetizers and our drinks but asked the server to come back in a few minutes. She scarcely left when she came back and asked if we were ready to order. We explained we were not, and she huffed away. Two minutes later, there she was again with pad in hand, hovering over our table. We ordered and she skitted away. Our appetizers arrived and they were okay, not great, but not totally awful. Our meals arrived about 3 minutes later. Which leaves me to think that they have most of the meals pre- made and simply dish it up. I had what can only be described as a soup but I had ordered a meal. There was so much sauce on the meal that it was overflowing onto the table. I had not ordered a vegetarian, but it took me several stabs at the soupy concoction to find the three pieces of beef they tossed in. The sauce was too sweet and overpowered everything in the mix. My dining companions had similar dishes and theirs were also over sauced. The portions were so large that we had to take most of it home. I left mine because I didn't want sweet veggies the next day. However, we had to wait about 15 minutes for the server to come back to our table to ask us if we wanted boxes. We were clearly finished as we had moved our plates to the center of the table. When the server came back we asked for our boxes and she disappeared....10 minutes the hostess came by with our check and asked us if we wanted boxes, We again asked for boxes and she left to return with them. We packaged our remaining meals and paid our overpriced tab for this meal. Having never eaten here before, I was appalled by the appearance, the food and the service. If you want Thai food in Salem, save yourself the headache and go somewhere else...ANYWHERE else! read more

Nothing is super impressive about this place in regards to decor, food, or service. My visits there have all be "blah" at best. The prices were decent, which prompted multiple visits for low key lunches and boring dinners. Service could've been better, but it seems the waitresses aren't all that enthusiastic about delivering good service. Aside from the food, but more to do with the name, their actual Thai beer selection is good with solid prices. However, this is not a place that is emphasized on its drinks, but more of the (so-so) Thai experience. read more

Mediocre Thai food, and oily, too, complimented with spotty service. This restaurant's sole strength is its beer selection, which includes a couple of good Oregon microbrews in addition to the great Singha. In a Thai restaurant, even a small selection of decent beers is unusual. I'd have given Thai Beer the benefit of a doubt and rated it three stars except that I visited the restroom. The restaurant is in a mall of fairly recent construction, but the restroom looked like it was located in a dive, in a Nineteenth Century building, in old town. Broken, dirty toilet seat. White walls turned dark with dirty hand prints around every lever, knob and opening. Rust at the bottom of the door casing. In a city where most Asian restaurants are hopelessly stuck in the gaudy red-and-gold decor and oily chow mein days of the 60s and 70s, Thai Beer stands virtually alone. It's not perfect, and it's not quite Portland - the dishes can be greasy and a little underspiced on occasion, and I'd advise potential customers to steer way, way clear of the gloppy Rad Na - but unlike other Asian restaurants in Salem, Thai Beer offers its small-town customers something fresh and unique rather than coddling them with the usual heavily-MSGd comfort food. Aside from the aforementioned Rad Na, virtually everything on the menu will satisfy. My dad prefers the salads, probably because they're the most challenging items on the menu, flavor-wise; the fishy, piquant aroma drifting off the larb and papaya salad might turn off some diners, but it is easy to develop a taste for both. Save room for dessert - the homemade black rice pudding and coconut ice cream are a treat, and the fried bananas with Hershey syrup taste and smell like the Thai equivalent of a county fair. Hopefully the continued success of Thai Beer will encourage other restaurateurs to open modern and authentic Asian restaurants in Salem. Recession be damned; if the restaurant boom of the past few years is any indication, Salemites are learning to expect quality and culinary novelty rather than comforting familiarity when they go out to eat. So far Asian cuisine has largely been left out of the mix, but the popularity of Thai Beer should be proof enough that a good East Asian restaurant can make it in this town. read more

I love this place and have been going for years, especially when they had a place in West Salem. Veggies in stir frys are nice and crunchy when they should be. All the curries are great. Fave dishes here are evil prince curry, cashew nut chicken, chili mango chicken, pad eggplant, and the pineapple curry fried rice. The fried tofu in dishes is wonderful, and the Thai rice (red/purple) is a great add on for just 50 cents more. We like to get orders to go. Portions are large for dinner. When we started to go to Thai Beer it appeared to be good, as time has passed and our flavor pallets have gotten better, this place is now a pass. If you like large portions and extra oil on your food then this is the place for you. The flavor of the food was totally lost. Fast service, tasty food. Im not a fan of the entire menu, but the Pad See Ew, holy smokes. I LOVE it. I dont do spicy very well. But I really do like a majority of thai food, so I have a pretty good working knowledge of what tastes good. My favorite lunch stop! Their lunch specials are delicious, a good price, and you'll have leftovers for dinner. Great place for vegetarians, because they offer tofu AND great tempei! Favorite dish is curry (any of the curries, massaman is nice) over brown rice with tempei, but their pad see ew (with beef) and pad thai is also fantastic. Service is friendly, timely, and helpful. First time here, ordered on Grubhub. This review is for food only. The food was very well separated for delivery, making sure that things that would get soft where not included in the main dish. Ordered Shrimp Pad Thai and Beef with Gravy. Not sure what the gravy was supposed to be as it was soup and the flavors didn't meld together well. The beef and broccoli were cooked well though. The tails were left on the shrimp that were mixed into the Pad Thai, I don't eat shrimp personally but it seems inconvenient for the person eating it. Paid Thai was said to be flavorless as that dish goes with hardly any spice. Crab puffs were ok, but nothing special. Will more than likely not go back. read more

The salad rolls are boring-- need fresh mint and maybe some carrots. We usually get #33 and #43 with brown rice (love the brown rice!!! The food is always really good, sometimes it's not 100% as good as last time, but I'd say it always stays around 80% good! Maybe just if it's the sauce or the freshness and how well it was cooked. I still always come here though because I love their Thai dishes. My favorite is their Pad Thai! I can't decide if pork or beef is better though. read more

Ordered to go. First time. Got the chicken pad Thai. It was not very good. Very tasteless no spice. The chicken had no flavor. They put so much carrot shreds on top that the noodles turned orange. Also the noodles were all one big lump. Would not order this again but may try something else. read more

I went to Thai Beer for the first time today, I ordered pad thai to go, and I have to admit this is probably by far the WORST pad thai I have ever eaten. The chicken was extremely dry, the noodles were all stuck together in clumps and the flavor was bland, had barley any taste to it at all. I would not recommend eating here. Meh. Not much flavor in any of the dishes that I ordered to go. Ordered Chicken Penang curry with brown rice, tofu salad rolls with peanut sauce. The curry was bland and seemed to have an odd mixture of frozen vegetables in it. The salad rolls were basically shredded iceberg lettuce (with a few flecks of carrot shavings) and fried tofu. No flavor, no cilantro. The peanut sauce was the blandest I've ever had. Also, I ordered and paid for brown rice but received white. In all, it was edible but not great there are certainly better options in town and it's worth it to drive out of my way to get them. read more

This is the second Thai restaurant I have tried in Salem with my Mom, and Sister. They were hoping I liked it here because they live in Salem. When they visit me in Eugene I take them to some pretty good places and this place couldn't touch any of them. The food wasn't bad, I am just spoiled I guess by our restaurants. I had the cashew chicken and was expecting something different. The veggies were basically raw and cut way too big for my for my liking. I almost ordered a whole new plate of food! I took bites of my sons kee mo, phad Thai, and Thai basil, which all were better than my dish. I normally would not order phad Thai because it's just too traditional and I like more flavor but this one wasn't bad as long as you add the peanut sauce to it. I might go back when visiting my Mom and sister, unless they find a better place as long as I don't order the cashew chicken again. That dish is a no, no!!! read more

Well, I just had the worst Thai food I've ever eaten. None of the dishes had any flavor! Even the peanut sauce was like tasteless gravey. My husband's shrimp fried rice only had 3 shrimp in the whole order, and the chicken in my "Thai Beer special noodles" seemed like it had been boiled without even bothering with salt.
