They have the menu on the blackboard and also paper menus with more definitions on the food. Server was patient and helpful. Step two, take your number and find a seat. You can sit at the bar or in the back. The decor is very modern. You wouldn't know you were in a Thai restaurant. Step three, receive food and eat! The food was unexpectedly awesome! The pad thai was one of the best I've had in Davis. The food was super yummy. We also got the praram beef and the peneng curry. For lunch you get a free drink with your order. Unlike most restaurants, you order up front and they give you a number to place on your table. Water is self-serve as well. * There is a $10 minimum on card so make sure to bring cash unless you're planning on ordering a drink or appetizer! Food: - Pad Priew Wan (number 9 on the menu) I always order this with chicken. It comes with sautéed tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumber, green onions, pineapples in sweet & sour sauce, and a side of rice. This is usually my go-to order unless I'm craving something salty. You can't really go wrong with sweet & sour sauce! - Duck Fried Rice I don't think this is listed on their menu on the wall anymore (correct me if I'm wrong), but they still make it if you order it. Most people don't know about this dish and are actually quite surprised that it tastes really good! If you're a duck fan, definitely try this dish at least once. * I've been noticing that their portions have been getting a little smaller which is disappointing. Service: - Overall, their service isn't anything spectacular. They just bring out your food for you and whenever you need something, you can call one of the servers over. But being that this place is more of a self-serve type of restaurant (get your own water and seasoning/spices from a little counter), I can't say much about the service. - Thai Canteen used to be pretty consistent about how fast your food comes out but recently, especially when it's been busy, the food takes forever. Last time I went, my friends and I waited more than 30 minutes for our food... However they've been pretty consistent in the past so hopefully this doesn't happen again. I was visiting my best friend in Davis and I noticed a lot of Thai restaurants around the area. However, Thai Canteen has been on my bookmarks and I had to try it! My best friend and I walked to Thai Canteen from her apartment for dinner. You order your food first and you are given a stand with a number on it to put on your table. The atmosphere of Thai Canteen is modern and seems to be geared towards the college students. The food is affordable and the service is quick and friendly! We ordered the fried Calamari, Thai tea and Chicken Pad Kee Mao. The Thai Tea is served in a mason jar. It was yummy. I love fresh Thai Tea. The calamari was okay. We ordered it because she loves calamari, so we took a risk ordering calamari at a Thai restaurant. One of my go-to noodle dishes is Pad Kee Mao! Mmmmm. My green curry fried rice (with chicken) was pretty delicious. Yes, I added peppers and some hot sauce to it, but it was good. Maybe next time I'll see if THEY can 'kick it up a notch.' Calamari was fried and just OK. Came with a sweet sauce which took me a bit to get used to. Pad thai is reliably tasty. The place felt a bit industrial inside (cement flooring, etc.), so I took my number and sat out in the "parklet." It felt like I was dining in a parking space. Because I was. They did bring my food out to my parking space though! I've came here so many more times from my first review, I can't believe I've never had an update! This place quickly became one of my go-to restaurants in Davis. I've adapted to liking that the noodles were very saucy (there's a lot of sauce); it's full of flavor! And not to mention the $1 Thai tea during their happy hours! When I want Thai food in Davis, I usually turn to Thai Canteen. I've also recommended it to my friends who've come to visit. How it works here is you order at the counter, take a number and choose a table. I usually get their noodle dishes - pad Thai, pad kee mao, or pad si ew, all of which are yummy! I turn more to pad Thai or pad si ew tho, because I'm not much of a bell pepper person. I've also tried their green curry fried rice, which has a mild spicy kick to it, and their tom yum. Their Thai tea is good too! They have a section across their cash register that includes self serve water and spices. Their prices are very budget-friendly! Perfect for a college town. If you want to call take out but don't have their menu on hand, you can search it up online, which includes prices and a description of each food item. Food usually comes out quick and the servers are pretty prompt in taking away your dish, which is nice. In terms of ambiance, sometimes it gets very noisy here that I feel like I have to yell to the person across from me. This place is my Davis go-to for cheap Thai food. Each entree is around $9, but there's no table service (as there is with most other Thai restaurants in Davis) so it's kind of like ordering at Chipotle or Pluto's or Jack's, a tip isn't required but they do bring your food to your table. I love noodle dishes, and I don't think you can go wrong with the Pad Thai or Pad Se Ew. Either dish can be ordered with chicken, beef, or pork. Shrimp is an additional fee. They are happy to make accommodations like no bean sprouts, or on our most recent trip, let us order a side of steamed veggies. It was a mix of carrots, cabbage, green beans, and broccoli; steamed but no seasoning. I think their flavors are your standard Thai tastes. If you get your order to-go, it comes in a reusable microwaveable container. They're fantastic! Also, a little tip if the weather's lovely, take your food over to the Davis Commons (the large grassy area by Mikuni), and enjoy a little picnic! Only downside is the wait can sometimes be awhile, whether you're waiting in line to order or waiting for your food to be cooked and come out to you (that's what I've had to wait for the most). Pad kee mao: good and flavorful, slightly greasy (but that's stir fry for you). Be careful of spice levels. Their 4 levels of spice vary by multiple degrees of magnitude! Mild is mild, medium is for people who can handle heat on a daily basis, spicy (I haven't tried but it is probably unfathomably flaming), and Thai spicy (don't even). Bottom line: know what you're getting yourself into when you order spicy food. :] Pad priew wan: sauteed tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, pineapple in Thai sweet and sour sauce and a side of rice. For 2.50 each drink, we got one of those dinky clear 8oz(?) plastic cups (usually reserved for water cups) half filled with ice. Confused, I asked the employee if they ran out of cups or something, and he said: "Oh, these are our take-out cups". Wait, so our two take-out drinks combined would have been ONE drink if we stayed at the restaurant....and they cost the same? Are you kidding me? Plus, the stupid lids, which are obviously not made for those water cups, leaked on the way out, spilling tea everywhere..ugh. For the food, I guess being backed up in the kitchen means really crappy stuff. The Pad Kee Mao wasn't flavorful, spicy, and tasty today, and the same can be said for their Pad Thai. I guess if you like eating bland, dry, and doughy stuff, tonight's dinner would have been fine, but if you like to eat food that actually tastes like something other than flour....tonight's dinner was really, really gross. This place was located in Davis and we stopped by for lunch coming back to the Bay Area from snowboarding. It wasn't busy when we came here and it wasn't what I expected. You order, pay, and sit down. Their menu was large and had a lot of choices so it took awhile for me to decide. I finally ordered and got the Chicken Pad Thai ($7.25). My friends ordered the Kao Pad Kiow ($7.25) and the Kao Pad Poo ($8.95). We sat down and waited awhile for our food. The interior looked modern and clean. It also had a feel that you could be studying for class (I assume a lot of UC Davis students go here), but I don't know if they will let you. Our food came out at the same time. The Pad Thai was okay and the portion was enough for one person. I wasn't full when I finished, but I felt it was good for the price. My friends' dishes looked good and I would say it was a safe choice as with the Pad Thai. They had Thai Iced Tea here but I didn't order one. The staff here were nice and friendly. First time I came to this place I found by fluke by reading yelp reviews.. The reviews said that this is one of the best thai places in Davis California so I decided to stop in and try it with my hubs for the first time.. We went on a Sunday early afternoon for lunch.. Walked in cute very quaint place cutely decorated place.. And it's one of those places where the menu is behind the bar or pick a menu up and order from it and you place an order at the cash register and when the food is ready they will bring it to you.. We we're served by this awesome girl with killer hair, she was really really helpful and very informative about the food, really knew the food that they were serving there and knew how good the dishes are, knew how to help us and help us pick out a dish since it was our first time there.. We started with apps to start: crispy shrimp rolls and the crispy taro fried.. I also ordered a Thai iced tea (definitely recommend to try).. For our main hubs got praramrong song since he is such a huge peanut sauce type of guy and I got something basic that I knew, which was the pad Thai.. Everything came out in a good time, The servers were very attentive to us and they always stopped by to check up on us to make sure that we were happy and satisfied with everything there.. You know it's a really good place to eat at when the line is almost to the door from the cashier and the speed and pace of all the food is being banged out once in a timely manner.. Line clears and it just end up being full again.. Overall a super experience there considering it was a first time going to a new restaurant..Hubs is a awesome tipper and he gave the server $10 for a $36 meal but definitely worth it because they were so awesome.. Wow! This place makes some pretty amazing Thai food, especially at the low price. I came for a quick lunch and I am glad I came here because it's sort of a fast casual style restaurant where you order your food first and they'll bring it out to you unlike most sit down Thai restaurants. Even though it was busy, the food came out pretty fast. My favorite dish was the green curry fried rice because you don't always see that on every menu so it was cool to try something new. I liked the pad si ew as well because the noodles were thick and soft and it had actual Chinese broccoli as opposed to Thai places that use regular broccoli and carrots. I generally prefer pad see ew over pad Thai at a restaurant but the pad Thai here is also good. It's not the best I've had but it is far from the worst! Ugh, this place is awful. I took one bite and I couldn't continue. It was hard enough to chew and swallow. On top of that, the service was terrible. I ordered the pad thai with a side of rice. Choice of meat was chicken and I added tofu. Side order of fried veggie spring rolls and a Thai tea. 1) The Thai tea was good. It wasn't overly sweet. I'd order this again. 2) The pad thai was inedible. It tasted as though it had been tossed in cough syrup. It was so sweet, but like...sickly sweet. It stuck to my tongue. The aftertaste was disgusting. It just tasted like sugary peanut butter, and it was way too wet. 3) The rice was cooked well. 4) Spring rolls were crispy, but the inside was really doughy and the veggies looked wilted. It didn't taste fresh. Again, the service sucked. The gentleman who took my order was on his phone 90% of the time, and only looked up from his screen to tap the order into the computer. We ordered this to be delivered. We had trouble with it last time but decided to give it another chance. This is the second time they didn't give us rice. We ordered sticky rice and they didn't put it in. When your depending on this to make your meal it's a huge disappointment. We ordered Thai chicken soup. It was a very small portion of just coconut milk and a splattering of mushrooms. No other veggies. Really disappointed. We also ordered two chicken larbs, one medium and one mild. The medium was inedible as it was way spicy which it weird as we didn't even see any Thai chilies. Then, the mild was super bland with no chiles and no spice at all. Weird with soggy lettuce thrown in. Larb is much better with cabbage on the side. We also ordered mango sticky rice. It was food colored blue(gross) and dry with hardly any sauce. Not worth the calories. Mango was fresh though. I'd have to say that now this is my least favorite thai restaurant and won't be back. One order of pad Thai and one order of pad see ew. I pick up the order and drive all the way back home and open the bag and to my surprise it's not 1 but 2 pad see ew and no pad Thai. I get it if you're busy with a line out the door but there was nobody waiting for their orders. Maybe it's my bad for not checking the stapled bag with the receipt of my order saying 1 pad Thai and 1 pad see ew... but needless to say I'm unsatisfied with this experience. We stopped by on our way back to the Bay with low expectations but were starving and just in time before they closed. We were so pleasantly surprised with the two dishes we ordered. The garlic shrimp came with broccoli, green beans and cabbage in a delicious fermented soy and garlic sauce. I asked if we could get sticky rice instead of the brown/white rice that the dish comes with. No problem. Cheap and open late! Whenever I come here, I always order either Pad Kee Mao, Pad See Ew, or Pad Thai. I've tried all of them a few times and they've always come out consistent. I like how we can adjust the spice levels, but it definitely depends on what the chef defines as "medium-spicy" versus "hot spicy". Sometimes it's too spicy and sometimes it's not enough - but you can't ask them to remake it if they made it too spicy. Also, try to dine-in instead of taking it to-go because I feel like the portion size is smaller for the latter. But, be wary because the lines and wait time are usually 40+ minutes during their peak hours. It's usually more crowded during dinner than lunch. read more

The service here was pretty rough but they were also really busy. Food was really spicy so be warned. It might be best to order your seasonings on the side or make sure to tell them that you want it "American spicy" so your eyes aren't watering. The curry was great and the pad Thai was a bit oily but tasty. Larb was average. Make sure to get one of their Thai iced tea's, very refreshing and delicious! read more

This is their spiciest thing on the menu. and If it's not spicy enough, I like to load it with the dried red peppers on top. They should seriously have this item as a challenge.
