I'm from San Jose where Thai food is more plentiful and therefore the rating of "two: meh I've experienced better" is most fitting. The food wasn't horrible but it was a solid ok. The restaurant had a dingy smell to it and the dishes were not served hot enough. I had the pad thai and a coconut curry soup that tasted too much like a dessert. I normally love coconut curry and understand that it's a sweet dish but this dish was much too sweet for my taste. I also thought the pad thai lacked flavor and did not have enough sauce. Ordered via yelp. I called the restaurant b/c it says 'no delivery' online but has a 'start your order' by yelp. So the restaurant says my order is out for delivery. I stand outside the grand sierra for about 30 mins. Then I decide to call customer service (foodjet) and they tell me that my order hasn't left the store yet. What?! I ordered chicken pad Thai and drunken noodles with tofu and an appetizer. Tell me why the drunken noodles look exactly like the chicken pad Thai?? Wtf. Overall, the taste is mediocre at best. Honestly this place is so great for many reasons: 1) the aesthetics are amazing; 2) all their food options are solid and it's hard to go wrong; 3) the service is great and the servers are very accommodating; 4) their menu has many options to choose from; 5) their lunch menu is diverse and cheap. I would like to highlight a few things on the menu: the drunken fried rice is to die for. It is so, so good and I typically don't like fried rice so I was extremely surprised by how good it was. I also really like all their appetizers, especially their spring rolls. For drinks, I enjoy the iced green tea with ice cream. I think their Thai tea is too sweet for me though. They do use a 1 - 5 star scale but after going there about 6 times, they rarely ask me for what number I preferred. Sometimes I do go with a number and sometimes I let them decide. For example, their 4 stars is not that spicy when I ordered the pumpkin curry (from someone who eats a lot of pretty spicy food so take that as you well). However, I didn't tell them a number for the drunken fried rice and it was decently spicy despite us not giving them a number to match. If you do not want too spicy or cannot handle any spice, make sure to let them know if there's a chili sign next to the food. Thai Chili does not disappoint! This was the second time my husband and I got food here, the first time was a to-go order a few months ago. The to-go order was so fast & convenient! The food was packaged well and everything stayed very warm. This time we ate in the restaurant. The waitresses were all very nice and the interior was clean & decorated nicely. We shared a fresh spring roll appetizer, which was amazing! For entrees we ordered Yellow Curry with Chicken and Pineapple Fried Rice which had a little bit of everything! The food was super fresh and delicious. I got pad kee maw or something like that and the vegetables were cooked perfectly and everything had a great flavor. My brother got yellow curry. He ordered it as spicy as they could make it but they didn't buy any spicyness at all so maybe they were confused by me ordering no spicy for my order. Regardless, he said it had a lot of flavor and was really good. The portions are moderate, but so are the prices so it works out. It's a very casual environment but they don't have a lot of tables. They asked us to leave shortly after we finished so they could use the table. Anyways, will be going back for more fresh and delicious food. read more

Quite possibly the best Thai food restaurant in Reno? Thai Chili is in the heart of Midtown on Virginia St, located near lots of other great eateries and bars. Their food is very flavorful and will absolutely satisfy your Thai food craving. I tried the Crab Puffs, Combination Pad Thai, Pineapple Fried Rice, and one of the curries. Everything was super delicious and you really can't go wrong with anything on their menu. This is the worst experience ever for my family lunch here. The staff is very very rude. We ordered all vegetarian items and since they were busy, all the vegetables in all noodles and curries were raw and frozen. When we ask them to clocked properly, one of the staff person started shouting and were very rude, In reply she told us we're very busy, we not going to re do it for you. I have been lazy about updating my Yelp reviews, but Thai Chili is a review that needs an update sadly for all the wrong reasons... Thai Chili for years was my favorite Thai Restaurant I would come near weekly for my Thai Food fix, but about 6-8 months ago or so something happened. I don't know if they got a new chef regarding the declining food quality, but they also did what some restaurants do... start to neglect their regular-frequent customer because they always come in. My food started to come out extra oily and the vegetables were so over cooked that it was like eating baby food. Moreover, I would order extra spicy and the food would come out bland, their spicy-level was why their food was one of my favorites! However, since they had been my favorite Thai place for so long, I want to give them another chance time and time again.... In regards, to service there were days towards the end that I would go in and they would just point me to a table without so much as a word and grumpily take my order. I'm sorry so you don't want my money or generous tip? I don't expect us to be BFF's but a little polite-friendly-professionalism is expected. In a spirit of honesty, it was only one or two waitresses that would do the moody-grumpy thing, the other waitresses were still friendly. There was also a couple of times when I went in with friends and they were so busy we waited nearly 30 minutes before they TOOK our order. The Ultimate Sin and Final Straw I had been going to Thai Chili for years at least 3X per month, sometimes more per month. I would expect that if I never ordered meat in all this time and have told them several times that I was a vegetarian that it would sink in. One day I ordered the Garlic Dish with Tofu and they brought me a plate of Garlic Dish with chicken. I was annoyed, but they resolved it quickly. So I forgave them. On the day of my final and last meal with them, the grumpy waitress pointed me to a table and grumpily took my order - Garlic Tofu extra spicy. I was served a plate of Garlic Tofu extra bland; moreover, second bite into the dish I noticed a weird 'tofu piece' and poked at it with my fork it was chicken, if I had bitten into it I would have been murderous! I alerted the friendly waitress reinforced the concept that vegetarians find meat on their plates repulsive - she apologized and took it back into the kitchen to address it. I also mentioned that it was super bland and I ordered super spicy. When the new dish came out, it was chicken free but it was also super bland again. After months of deteriorating service and food quality along with being served meat twice; my loyalty to them was shattered. Moo Dang right up the street is my go to Thai Chili place now. read more

Most independent restaurants are fortunate to survive more than 5 years, and location famously matters. Defying the odds, and well before south of downtown Virginia St. became "Midtown", Thai Chili opened in what could be considered the seediest part of the neighborhood. Honestly, how is there still a XXX theater anywhere in 2019? Ahem. Lasting 15 years and now a part of what has become the trendiest zone in town, my daughter and I set out to discover the reason for its longevity. The menu is pretty expansive, taking us a moment or two to peruse. My daughter said she can't do Thai without spring rolls ($5.95), which were fat with shrimp, cucumber, lettuce, spinach, carrot, and rice noodles. The warm peanut sauce was plentiful, chunky, and mild, and the rice paper had the right amount of give without being chewy or gummy. Similarly, I can't not order satay ($6.95), skewered and grilled chicken breast meat marinated in spices and coconut milk, served with peanut sauce and cucumber salad. Both a great start. I've experienced both good and marginal Thai "stuffed chicken wings", but the angel wings ($9.95) were aptly named. Golden breaded exterior stuffed with shrimp, chicken, bean thread noodle, carrot, onion, mushroom, and cabbage, served with a slightly spicy tamarind marmalade. A bone sticking out of one end was the only thing indicating these 5"x2" loaves of tasty, reconstructed crispiness started out as a wing. With Thai or Indian it's common to be asked how spicy you want your entree to be, i.e. "one to five", but we weren't given the option on this occasion. An order of combo pad thai ($14.95), rice noodles pan-fried with egg, red onion, scallion, bean sprout, peanut, shrimp, chicken, pork, and beef was pretty good, but tamarind sweet and a little bland. To my taste, much better punched up with some chili sauce. Drunken fried rice with tofu ($10.95), a mix of pan-fried rice, garlic, onion, bell pepper, chili paste, basil, mushroom, baby corn, cabbage, broccoli, and firm tofu (or meat of your choice) was on the other end of the spectrum, full of fire and flavor. I loved the spicy rice and its constituents, but the marinated tofu was tough, flavorless, and unappealing. I enjoy firm tofu done well, but this wasn't it. I'm lucky to have gotten a few bites of the seafood ginger ($14.95), being my daughter loved it so. Who can blame her, with a delicious, perfectly cooked mix of shrimp, scallop, mussel, krab, squid, ginger, garlic, onion, bell pepper, scallion, white and straw mushroom in a savory gravy. The right amount of fire, excellent ingredients, and an all-around perfectly enjoyable dish for a seafood fanatic. Definitely the best item ordered, with not a scrap heading home as leftovers. My "Hail Mary" choice was duck curry with pineapple ($15.95), because duck can be a real shot in the dark, and I'm infrequently fond of pineapple in savory surroundings. Color me pleasantly surprised. Despite what appeared to be canned pineapple, the tender roasted duck had not a hint of gaminess, and the tomato, bell pepper, and Thai basil simmered in medium spicy red curry sauce was excellent. Despite myself, I took to dipping chunks of pineapple in the sauce to enjoy on their own. Perhaps my new favorite use for pineapple, and a flavor combination that would stand on its own as either dessert or breakfast. read more

They accommodated our requests to make certain dishes vegan by leaving out the fish sauce, and even brought us new salads when the first ones came out with a mayonnaise based dressing. We came in for lunch today and it was not very busy. We were seated right away and given waters. They have vegan egg rolls that come with a sweet and spicy sauce and it perfectly complimented the fried veggie egg rolls. We ordered the garlic dish with no meat, no fish sauce, extra veggies and brown rice ($1 upcharge for brown rice), and drunken noodles with tofu no fish sauce. Each entree came with a small salad which was just iceberg lettuce, cucumber, carrot and tomato. Our first salad came with a mayonnaise dressing but they exchanged them for salads with a sweet vinegar dressing and we really enjoyed the freshness of them. The food was delicious, the drunken noodle dish was a little too spicy for my husband, but I loved it. This dish is made with chili paste and it is spicy, so if you do not like the heat, maybe request it to be made with less chili paste. Overall it had super fresh vegetables and so did the garlic dish. Delicious! The two women who were working today were very sweet, very efficient and we appreciated their service. They also have wonderful wood carvings on the walls, a lot of elephant decor (which I love) and it is very clean and welcoming inside. Loved our lunch today and will be back soon. I ordered pick up tonight. My partner ordered basil fried rice, I ordered drunken noodle. His box was filled to the brim with food. Mine was MAYBE a little over a quarter of the way full. It literally took me less than 10 minutes to eat. If the meal was 10.99$, I don't think I would care as much, but it was 15$! Thai Chili has been one of our faves for consistently good Thai for yearrrssss. Pretty much every dish we've tried has been delicious, made fresh, presented hot and looks beautiful. The people are friendly and actually greet guests, the prices are fair and the portions are generous enough for us to enjoy dinner with enough for leftover for lunch the next day. Their Tom Kha Gai is our go-to for comfort food, it's pure silky coconutty perfection. We love their larb and their green papaya salad is our favorite app!!! We had the duck curry on this visit, and it was awesome!!! Chunks of pineapple offset the heat, and while it was a little on the spicy side for hubby, I thought the medium spicy was just right. We'll always come back for our faves and look forward to sampling their whole menu! read more

Fresh off of a terrible encounter here -- I ordered from this restaurant off GrubHub, I came to pick up my order an hour later where they tell me they ran out of my entrée but I still have to pay for the side and dessert I ordered. Why would they not call me immediately after they saw this order fully aware that they were out of this item so that I could order something else to replace it?? Kudos are in order for being one of the only sources of Thai for lunch on Sundays. For that reason alone, I desperately want to love Thai Chili. And while I do find myself drawn to a lot of the flavors they have to offer, pretty much every dish I tried fell just a bit too flat for me to really fully enjoy. I grabbed the Spicy Chicken Curry Pop for lunch. I dug the flavors right off the bat but wanted even more crispiness. I feel like being pan fried after the deep fry took a lot away from that, and the bites of chicken ended up being dry without a crunch. The flavors from the curry, chili paste, and basil were spot on, but I felt like it was in a generally strange crossroads of needing more crisp, sauce, or both. I also had a few bites of the Vegetable Garden -- simple and tasty, but they skimped on the shrimp! An order of cheese puffs got lost somewhere along the line, but they were out in no time after I asked about them mid-way through my entree. There's no denying that rangoons in all their different shapes, names, and iterations are pretty consistently satisfying. I definitely inhaled these, but I was admittedly a little disappointed: tasty as they were, the filling danced on the line between creamy and runny. The shining part of my meal was the single curry puff that came as a side for my lunch entree. The crispy shell with the flavorful mushy veggie mix inside was like a Thai samosa, and I was half tempted to grab an order to-go... but I'll save them for next time. All hangups considered, I left Thai Chili more curious than disappointed. I think all of the workings of greatness were there in those dishes, and it was mainly the execution that flopped. I most definitely need to swing back soon to try their curries and Thai menu staples to a get a better grip on what they have to offer. As Gabriel C. and Par G. have already described in their reviews, I'd like to also attest to the situation last night. We have a volunteer group that feeds the homeless on Tuesday nights. Occasionally, a church group will graciously offer to feed the needy on Tuesdays. On those Tuesdays we're not needed, we always come down to Thai Chili to enjoy a meal as a group. You can see from Gabriel C's previous check-ins the service has been great and food has been good. Last night was more than disappointing. The restaurant wasn't that all particularly busy. The main dining room consisting of probably 5 tables were all full and we were seated in the side dining room of which we had reservation for 11 and 9 of us were able to show up and we were the only people seated in that section of the dinning room. We had ordered two appetizers of spring rolls and pot-stickers. That's when one of the members of our group noticed the first hair in the peanut sauce that accompanied the spring rolls. We really thought nothing of it since the spring rolls were done. Once the food started coming out, it came out in small increments, a dish here or two followed by 10mins with no other dishes coming out. A member of our group had ordered ahead of time as she had a work meeting to go to and ended up receiving her food after the first couple of rounds had come out. She basically had to pack everything up and leave for her meeting without getting to eat. After everyone had finally received their food, the second complaint of hair in the food came out as Gabriel C. found a long hair in his noodles. Again, we thought nothing of it and Gabe removed the hair. At the end of our meal we decided to order dessert. We ordered 4 fried banana ice creams. When we started digging into the dessert, we found our third hair as one of my friends bit into the fried banana and pulled a hair out. At this point, we had to say something. My friend Par G., alerted the server of the hair in the fried banana and showed the server the hair in the peanut sauce. The server returned several minutes later apologized and said she removed the spring rolls and dessert of the ticket but that was the best she could do. This would have been perfectly fine but what came out of her mouth afterwards left us all in shock "if that's not good enough for you, you don't ever have to come back and eat our food..." I didn't know what to say at that point and our whole group was pretty offended at this point. We weren't asking for our meal to be free, we had found multiple hairs in our food and finally were at point of saying something. The removal of the two items of our bill and an apology would have been enough, but that extra commentary was pretty damn uncalled for. read more

I used to really dig Thai Chili, it was my go-to thai spot for 4 years. I thought the value was good, the food consistent and it was easy to get in when Bangkok was slammed. On my most recent visit I found a hair in my Pad Thai, and not just any hair, a 12 inch long robust black hair. Upon showing it to the waitress, who's served me dozens of times, she looked puzzled like she thought I was pulling a fast one. Ummmmm, I'm a short haired dirty blond. She eventually offered to have the dish remade after an awkward silence. I love awkward silences! Normally that would have been a reasonable response but we had already eaten our two other entrees and an appetizer. We were already stuffed. The proper response should have been to comp the entree and offer us a complimentary dessert or something. You don't treat regulars like just some schmucky schmuck from Portlandia ;) But I digress. My other point of contention concerns their menu's. They are dingy, dated and dirty looking. I actually want to wash my hands after ordering from them because of how chinzy they look. I haven't been back in a two months almost out of fear of another hair incident - this was the second such time in three visits. Put on a hair net already! I cannot in good conscience keep their rating any higher than a 2 for now. When I finally return, I'll reassess. In the meantime, I really hope they spend a little cheddar on new menus, and revisit their quality control procedures. read more

We have tried most of the Thai places in town and this is by far the BEST. Fresh ingredients, perfect flavors and the prices are not outrageous. This is our go-to Thai take out restaurant.
