Writing this from Thailand... Since I left Oceanside and moved to Thailand around a year and a half ago, I have often missed Cha's Thai Garden restaurant. Why is that? Because his food tops any restaurant that I have had over here. It may be because he is from Southern Thailand and that inspires his recipes, but even when I was travelling down south I still didn't experience anything as good as that little restaurant that I used to go to all the time in Oceanside. As I just read some of the reviews people have left, it is as if they expect a 5 star restaurant service for 8 bucks. This place is small and they have a small kitchen meaning you are going to wait for 10-15 minutes usually, so make sure you go with someone who you enjoy having a conversation with. I went to this restaurant for approximately six years before coming over here and I can honestly say I never had a negative experience. I think maybe a lot of it depends on a persons perspective of course. One time the waitress didn't speak good enough English to hold a conversation, but it was good enough to take an order. Of course I could choose to be outraged by this, or I could choose to enjoy the beauty of diversity and enjoy my delicious meal. The one constant thing throughout my 6 years of going to Thai garden was: 1. Cha, the owner was always very kind and he obviously loves what he does. 2. The food was always great, and I must have eaten here 100 times. The reason that it is better than what I generally have in Thailand is the quality. You can tell that he has some great ingredients available to him that might be a little harder or more expensive to come by here. That is why I wrote this exhaustive review from the other side of the world. I think Cha needs to move back home so I can come to his restaurant here. Try Thai Garden, it isn't only the best Thai food I have had in north county, it is the best Thai food I have had anywhere... Besides maybe one time in Japan at this place that was very similar... Gave it s second chance. Was doing to give 3 stars but updated with my 3rd visit to 4 stars. Ordered the pad see ew, tom kha soup, garlic tofu and cashew tofu this time. Tom kha soup was good and authentic as were the pad See ew and the cashew tofu. The garlic tofu was really kind of salty and I didn't like the flavor of it - just a bunch of soy sauce and garlic. Portion sizes are a little smaller than I would like. Didn't have any rude staff this time but still not my go to place for Thai. 9/11/20 Gave it a try for third time today; Ordered to go. Guy on the phone was really friendly - owner I think. He got my order all correct. Was friendly at check out too. Ordered tofu vegetable pad kee mao or drunken nooodles (tasted more like pad see ew with a pepper taste not so much spicy taste so was a little disappointed) and tofu vegetable pad Thai. The owner was a nice and polite guy who always welcomed you with a smile and asked how you were doing. Okay, so maybe this place is a hidden gem, and I'm hoping it is! The prices are insanely low and fair. I got 2 entrees: the beef salad and the spare ribs. They were just AMAZING! They give you an option 1-10 for spiciness. I ordered a 5 and realized that might be too hot and asked for a 3, it was spicy. I'm not sure if they kept the 5 spice but overall it was good. We were first time visitors and were blown away. As we all know, most restaurants anymore are mediocre at best. It's my understanding that they reopened about 4 months ago under a new owner. The curry puffs with chicken were amazing. They're like the best samosa you've ever had times two! The eggplant with beef had fantastic flavor and my salmon fried rice was plentiful and wonderful. The owner and other employees are amazing people too. They have always been so friendly and kind. I can definitely tell they care about us and the food. They are taking precautions for covid and keeping social distance by having tape on the ground, hand sanitizer in front, and wearing masks which makes me feel safe. Thai garden is more of a hole in the wall kinda restaurant but the quality of food they serve makes up for anything that can go wrong here. Plus their prices are super low compared to other Thai restaurants in the area. We came here on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy! There was only one server and I wanna say just one cook. We caught them at a rough time. They had customers come in and go because of how hectic that night was, not to mention their hour and a half wait time. It didn't end up taking that long for us and we had a party of 6. We got the basics-curries, noodles, rice and Thai tea with boba! All were delicious and served family style which I like. A favorite is their panang curry-savory, flavorful and finger licking good! I just can't get enough. On weekdays they offer a lunch buffet for a cool $7.95. It gets real busy and pretty hectic. People kind of just wait for the food to come out as they go pretty fast, refilling takes a while. Get there early. I love this place, that's why I gave them 5 stars. There really should be a half star option for these kind of reviews. I'd maybe give it 1.5 stars. I came here because I heard there was a lunch buffet, and the last time I went to a Thai buffet was when I was still living in Japan. It wasn't busy when I got there, maybe only 2 tables were occupied. There was a small selection of food, maybe 8? different things to choose from, 2 curries, fried rice, chicken pad thai, chicken pad see ew, vegetable egg rolls, something called crispy chicken, a couple desserts, and I think 1 other thing that I didn't try, and a soup. I don't know what kind of soup it was, but it looked like a hot and sour soup you get at Chinese restaurants. It didn't taste like hot and sour soup, but more like a brown egg drop soup. The fried rice seemed old, it was hard around the edges, like it was sitting out for a while. The pad thai and the pad see ew tasted ok, maybe on par with panda express but for Thai food. The chicken tasted like overcooked chicken, it seemed like it was just tossed into oil and cooked with no seasoning whatsoever. The curries were actually the best thing they had to offer, though I thought that panang curry was supposed to be a less spicy curry, but it was spicier than the yellow one! I noticed something odd when I sat down after getting my first plate, I had company at my table, even though I went there alone... it was a termite. I don't know how long they've been there, but there were a number of them flying around. I'd be weary about eating at this place until they get that problem looked at. read more

I read that there was a buffet but didn't see one during dinner time. The service was fast even though they warn you with a sign at your table that their kitchen was small so waiting could possible happen. One year later and I'm still just as satisfied. Lunch time: - Lunch buffet ($6.95) I'm glad that when I'm back in the States I can come home to cheap tasty Thai food. Dan requested Thai food before heading back to Ann Arbor, so to Thai Garden we went. At first we were going to order a la carte, but after looking at the lunch buffet, we decided on that instead. For a measly $6.95 you can eat yellow curry with chicken, panang curry with chicken, fried rice, eggplant with tofu, sauteed vegetables, pad kee-mao, fried chicken, tom yum soup, egg drop soup, jasmine rice, fried bananas and some tapioca pearl coconut dessert thing. I was pretty impressed with everything on the buffet as it was hot and not soggy. Both the panang curry and yellow curry were deliciously creamy. The vegetables were nicely sauteed. The eggplant with tofu was a little on the oily side, so not my favorite even though I usually love eggplant. I liked the pad kee-mao even though Dan thought it was too sweet. Dan liked the tom yum soup a lot, but I thought it was a little intense in flavor; it was just a little too concentrated for me. We also ordered a Thai tea and a Thai coffee, both of which were pretty delicious. The Thai coffee was a little too sweet for me, but Dan liked it, which was fine since the tea was what I ordered. Had the Massaman curry last night, it was great. We've been here several times and it's been consistent and tasty. My wife always orders substitutions, and while it's a bit hard to hear them on the phone, they've been good about getting the order right. Unfortunately they're tearing up the parking lot at the moment, but it's worth the walk around, and at 5pm on a Thursday there were already several tables occupied.
