I used to love Thai Lagoon's food, but the last two times that I've ordered delivery they have put chicken in my food instead of Tofu!!!! I almost didn't notice this time and almost ate it. I live in Wicker Park and this is my go to Thai place. The food is great, the prices are reasonable, and the portions are pretty large. I've found other Thai places in the area to be pretty bland. I'd recommend the Tom Kha soup, pad Thai, Panang noodle/curry, and Vietnamese spring roll. The only disappointing dish I've had was pad see ew. It was pretty bad. Was a bit dissapointed with this place. Ordered the green curry and the yellow curry. Small portions and almost no spice. Not a good value for the money. I ended up adding red pepper flakes at home to make it palatable. This is after requesting it between medium and hot. Ordered the Pad Thai- should be called beyond spicy inedible noodle mush, Satay-you would think hard to mess up but the peanut sauce was also so spicy you couldn't taste the peanut flavor, and the Pad See Ew was sour tasting and dry. Low-lit, pleasant indie-rock on the stereo (Yo La Tengo was playing last time I was there), vintage-y sort of haphazard but artful decorations. Also, some of the best pad thai I've ever eaten. Best Thai food in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area. I have never had a bad meal here ... prices are reasonable, servivce is good and food is always solid. I ate in the restaurant on Friday night for the first time (almost always do carry out) and the food was even better ... and it's BYOB. I love the friendly and warm atmosphere here. Never, ever order delivery from here if you want to get what you want or have dietary restrictions. They have screwed up more orders than they have not in the many years I have ordered from them. I order from other places and do not have this problem. Usually it is more of an an amusement (except when you ask them not to put chicken in something and they do anyway and you don't eat chicken - kind of a big deal since you can't eat it.) Well once again they got my order wrong. I called told the woman who answered of the mistake that was made and wanted to make sure no Bonito or chicken was in my dish they did give me and she shut me down cold saying that "since I did not catch that she did not write my order down right when she repeated it to me (I repeated what I wanted several times including as she read it back to me and it is hard to hear with all of the noise and the order is one word off) that it is my all fault". And "that is that so basically suck it" was her attitude. I have not been spoken to so rudely in a while. Is this how they treat people now? I wasn't even asking for a refund, or to have something to replace it - just trying to find out what was in the dish to see if I could eat it (I don't eat many types of seafood, and no meat or chicken). She could not be bothered except to repeat it is their policy that if the customer does not catch the mistake it is all on the customer. So for that she wouldn't even find out for me what was in what they sent me? There was no reason for her to act like that but I guess this is who they hire nowadays. The service is no longer friendly, ok. But rude? I had put it down to them just having a bad day when I brought my husband and his family there for dinner a few weeks ago and we got a very chilly waitress. We are not demanding snotty people. In fact we waited very patiently to be served for almost a half an hour. Sad, we started going there when this place first opened. I guess things have changed. Any order being wrong is not a big deal with all the bad things happening nowadays. But I will not spend my money on rude people. I won't be going back there again. read more

Good food. Just know that if you order shrimp in your fried rice that they leave the tails on. I found out the hard way. I was picking shrimp shells out of my teeth after the first bite. Thai Lagoon is very close to my apartment, but tonight was only the second time I ordered from them for delivery. Reason is their Pad Thai - a dish that should be mastered by Thaii restaurants - is too greasy and lacks fresh cilantro and crushed peanuts. No texture and no freshness.. Tonight was the same not so great dish. I had it with shrimp which are a good size, but were overcooked. The Tom Kai Soup is good, but the chicken was in irregular pieces and overcooked. And, they use button mushrooms, not straw mushrooms which will never impel me t give a 4 star review. Surprisingly, the best thing I had was their Crab Rangoon which is larger than a lot of Thai places, and most important, creamy and perfectly fried. Delivery was fast, but it was early on a Saturday night and again, I live close to them. I hope they improve and I will be a regular customer. read more

This business is possibly a front for some kind of illegal operation, because whenever I pass by the location it is always completely empty. Due to both its proximity to my apartment and the fact that they keep stuffing their annoying menus in my building's mailboxes, I have repeatedly tried to order from Thai Lagoon, but every single time I have called to order (7 so far) I was told that they either weren't delivering or that they didn't have anyone to deliver food. When everything else is closed, those are frustrating words to hear. I might have considered coming to pick it up in person, but I was repeatedly hung up on before any further conversation could take place. The next one of their menus I find in my mailbox I may use as toilet paper and come stick back in their mailbox. read more

Thai Lagoon WAS a wonderful restaurant with delicious food. It WAS my Thai restaurant for 6+ years. I have faithfully ordered from them and been highly satisfied with their food 50 time since I was introduced to the restaurant. However, recently everything has changed. The last time I ordered the panang curry was runny and watery. I thought they were just having an off night, so I did not complain. However, last night I ordered all my long time favorite dishes. EVERYTHING was different and it was NOT good. First, the crab rangoon/cream cheese wontons - they used to be huge cigar shaped appetizers. Now they are tiny triangles, which amounted to about 1/2 the filling that they previously had. Next, they also changed the sweet and sour sauce from a sweet tangy thick sauce - to the version that is runny and watery and tasteless. Next comes the Panang Curry. It used to be thick and creamy and delicious. It is now runny and watery. Not to mention the spice/flavor balance is completely different. When I placed my order for delivery, they said they were running a special where they were giving away egg rolls (or crab rangoon). I accepted the offer of the free appetizer. I think they had to give it away - because when I received it, it was disgusting and literally in a puddle/dripping with grease/oil. When I called to express my concerns I was informed that they had changed ownership and had a new chef. The hostess said to yelp, because then perhaps the new owners would listen to the complaints. She did call back and they offered to comp my next meal, but it was so bad, there will not be a next time. This is very sad. It is the end of a delicious Thai food era. read more

Zero Star isn't an option! I've been here before, but not but choice, just to meet friends because it was their choice. So last night was my choice, my bf wanted Thai and Penny's Noodles was closed, so i suggested this place since we were driving near it. We ordered the Shrimp Tempura served with veggies appetizer. The plate portion was really big - we looked for the shrimp and only found 2 pieces. When I asked the waitress that we only got two shrimp, she said "yes" and that was it. I said, I ordered Shrimp Tempura, not Vegetable Tempura. She said that's how it comes. I pointed to the menu and stated that all the other appetizers indicated the number of pieces but not this one, if they are going to serve only two pieces they should outline this or rename it to Vegetable Tempura with 2 shrimp, and this is very misleading. She left saying she will talk to her manager...she didn't return for a long time. We received our dinner and half way through our dinner she returned and she said she can give me 2 more shrimp. Trying not to laugh in her face, I replied "i wanted shrimp for an appetizer, we are now having dinner, at this point, i no longer want it. Go ahead and charge me for the TWO shrimp, but i don't want all that veggie tempura, i wont pay for it." She said, ok, i will check with my manager. I was not able to enjoy my meal after this fiasco and the chicken pad thai was nasty anyway, it was clumpy and extremely salty and i think i only saw two pieces of chicken. lol. It pains me to write a bad review for Thai Lagoon because I think it has some of the best thai food in Chicago. I give it one star despite the great food because I have had nothing but problems with getting this restaurant to deliver (1) the food I actually ordered, and (2) getting it to me in some sort of timely fashion. They have screwed up my order at least 3 or 4 times. And now twice I have had an unacceptably long wait for delivery. By unacceptably long, I mean over an hour and a half. Last night, which was a Sunday, was the last straw: I placed my order (two fried rice and one noodle dish, no special ordering or requests) at about 7:30 pm and was told it would be delivered in 45 - 60 minutes. After an hour and fifteen mintues, when my food was still not delivered, I called to inquire. I was told the delivery guy was just about to leave the restaurant (he had not even left yet???). After an hour and forty minutes when my food was still not delivered (I live about 15 mintues away from the restaurant), I called again and was told the delivery was "on its way" ("the check is in the mail"). I was never offerred a apology let alone a discount or rain check for the future. I cancelled my order and made a Not-Dog with cheese instead--just not the same. read more
