Disappointed by Thai North. The shrimp in a blanket were soggy yet burnt. It was the worst of both worlds. Pad Thai was a giant oily clump. No peanuts, no veggies except about 3 bean sprouts. No really flavorful at all. The chicken it is was ok though. I was pleasantly surprised it was tender and not fatty. OVERALL: I only ordered because it was one of the few thai places that delivered when I was placing my order. I'll go pick up myself at another place next time. read more

We had dinner for three delivered from Thai North on Saturday night. I sampled two of the dishes, plus my entrée. Here's the report card. The Steamed Pork Dumplings (Six for $5.95) were very good. The dough wasn't super thick like you see some times. They were good sized, moist and delicious. The Honey Sesame Chicken ($12.95 was 'Lightly battered chicken pieces fried until crispy, tossed in sauce put on top of crispy rice noodles and topped with sesame seed' was absolutely perfect -a great example of melt in your mouth perfection. It was by far the best item in our delivery bag. My entrée was from the menu's big curry section - a promising looking dish named Seafood Kang Som Curry - (Low calories without coconut milk) described as 'The famous Thai hot and sour kang som curry with napa cabbage, yu choy (an Asian green), turnip, and string beans. It can be ordered with steamed rice, brown rice, sticky rice or noodles. I went with the noodles. Honestly, I was disappointed with the curry. It was served in a one quart soup container because... well, it kind of was a soup. Look, I am a soup guy, I love soups and phos and chowders and bisques, well you get the idea. I have never seen a soup served in a restaurant that separated into two distinct layers like this one did. The top three fourths of the container held a thin but very flavorful broth. The bottom was like a thick muck of a paste that was quite unappetizing. I've never seen anything like this before in any restaurant soup bowl or take out container. In all fairness, the soup was loaded with vegetables, three shrimps, calamari and scallops. But once I finished off the broth and the seafood and the noodles, I left the rest of the mess in the bottom of the container. One more thing - the menu choice showed two hot peppers on the old spice meter, so I expected some kind of heat with the dish, but it delivered none. Maybe all the heat was in that nasty mess at the bottom of the container. Based on the reasonable pricing, the speed of delivery, the gargantuan menu, and the excellent Honey Sesame Chicken, I'll go with three stars. It is a small spot with four seats set along the window counter; a table for 2, two for 4 (easily convertible for a party of 8), and one for 6. They take reservations and credit cards. I love the well labeled food photos decorating the wall to the right, the colorful bits of decorations, and the cute salt and pepper shakers set at each table. As a sizeable party, we tried a good number of dishes family style, requesting that they make it all either mild or not spicy, depending on the dish. TN1. Northern Bermese Curry Spicy $9.95 PORK Choice of pork or chicken, peanut, ginger, pineapple stew in home style Hung Ley broth with toss of cilantro and scallion. Oh so tender melty pig belly! My favorite dish! I even ate the fat and skin. And accompanied with a nice sauce to boot. TN13. Grilled Puerco $6.95 PORK Grilled marinated pork or chicken in skewer served with northern style chili dipping sauce. This arrived as five sticks flavored with a tasty marinade. TN16. Chainmai Noodle Curry $9.95 Egg noodle, simmered chicken dump stick, pickle green mustard, shredded red onion, scallion and cilantro in northern Thai style curry. If you're not crazy about the pickled vegetable in a curry sauce, take it out while it is decorating the top of the dish. There was plenty for us to each have a small sample bowlful. They couldn't make this completely not spicy, but I could handle this level of heat. TN5. Tomato Based Ground Meat Spicy $9.95 Ground pork, tomato, lemon grass, simmered in northern Thai style served with pork rind, boiled egg and steamed vegetable. Without the heat, this didn't stand out as anything special but rather was just ground pork plus tomato sauce. But the pork rind that came alongside was a treat. C6. Eggplant Basil $10.95 CHICKEN Chicken, beef, pork, tofu or vegetables. Stir fired with eggplant, basil leaves, mushroom, string bean, onion, scallion and bell pepper in basil sauce. Got our dose of vegetables from this dish, cooked up in a manner where they retained a decent bite. E8. Rainbow Paradise Spicy $9.95 -SHRIMP (+$1) Stir fried mango, pineapple, bamboo, mushroom, string bean, carrot, zucchini, baby corn, snow pea with sweet sour sauce. The heat level still retained was okay with me. There were maybe 5 shrimp on the plate. V1. Vegetable Pad Tai Vegetarian $9.95 Stir fried rice noodles with broccoli, carrot, cabbage, zucchini, eggs, bean sprouts and scallion topped with ground peanuts. Tasty, but too sweet for some of us. Some dishes came accompanied by an individual portion of your choice of white rice, brown rice, sticky rice, and steamed noodles. We tried all four, and I say, go for the sticky and the noodles! Mango Sticky Rice $6.00 The sliced mango was so prettily presented in a heart shape around the sticky rice. A tasty dessert despite the fruit being a bit under-ripe. Thai North has a variety of foods on their menu that extends beyond Thai food - Chinese, Vietnamese, and just an eclectic mixture. The inside is plastered with pictures of their food and menu. There are maybe 4 or 5 tables, and it seems they mainly do a lot of take out orders. We dined on a Saturday evening, so they were busier and the inside was louder due to the amount of people and small size. I tried the duck noodle soup, which was overall just okay. The broth would have been perfect, but it was sweet, which I'm not a fan. They give you a good amount of duck, and I liked there were no bones on any of the duck pieces. It did come with some vegetables in the broth as well. It appears they only have street parking, which has been free the two times I have visited Thai North. I think next time I will opt for take out and try more of their Thai dishes. read more

I get takeout from Thai North at least once a week. I totally recommend this restaurant for take-out rather than a sit-down and eat, but if the latter is your preference, do it. The service is quick and good. My go-to entrees here are almost always the same: Basil pad Thai with chicken or vegetables made extra spicy, chicken Krapow made extra spicy as well. Occasionally I'll have the drunken noodles or the Krapow fried rice. The chicken Krapow is ground spiced chicken that comes with a side of rice. The crab Rangoon is also not bad, and is extra creamy. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of the food is good for the price. If you order online you get 10% back towards your next order. I've made use of that many times. My rating is based on the food and service, not so much the location or ambience. I'll give 4 for food and 4 for service, so an average of 4. I am taking off one point because once in a while the taste may not be consistent. read more

So many better options for Thai in Allston/Brighton. I wouldn't order from here again. I got a Lunch Special through Uber Eats. Pad Thai with crab rangoon and tom yum soup. Call me basic but that was my craving! I will say they were very quick in preparing the food and it was nice and hot when it got to me. The lunch special was a pretty good deal but only came with a half portion of pad thai. No big deal since there was plenty of other food. The pad thai was the worst I've had in Boston though. It reminded me of greasy cheap chinese takeout, not at all like the fresh zesty flavors you usually expect from pad thai. Instead it had a bitter aftertaste. The noodle texture didn't help, they didn't use flat rice noodles like most places, but a thinner rounder noodle. The limited pieces of chicken were tough and rubbery. The crab rangoon were ok but had a weird yellow color?? Almost like they added some curry powder but I didn't taste any curry. It was a little bizarre. The tom yum soup was probably the best of the 3 items - flavorful with a little kick. There was also a sad little side salad consisting of like 3 pieces of ice burg lettuce, some carrot shreds, and that ginger dressing you find at sushi places. I didn't touch it. I guess if I was drunk and it was late I would have found this meal acceptable, but any other time I would choose to order from Rod Dee, Dok Bua, S&I, Thai Place, Bangkok, or Bamboo before I chose this place (yeah I eat a lot of thai, sue me). read more

It saddens me to write this review. Prior to Covid-19, I would come here to lunch with my daughter on Saturday afternoons after Chinese school. I liked coming here for the combo box. You get an appetizer, soup, salad, entree, and a drink. Prices have gone up and that's understandable given the current global pandemic. However, the quality of what was given to me was disappointing this afternoon. I paid close to $20 for lunch today and didn't feel it was worth it at all. I ordered the combo and selected spring roll, tom yum soup, chicken green curry, white rice, and Thai iced tea. The spring rolls were bland and came with a pre-packaged duck sauce packet. Normally, it's a house made sauce. The chicken green curry was tasteless and watery, and there was barely any curry sauce! The vegetables were undercooked, and there wasn't any eggplant in the dish. The only thing that tasted yummy was the tom yum soup. While I enjoyed the salad with peanut sauce dressing, I would have preferred that they put more effort towards the green curry. Perhaps they can just cut out the salad? The container for this combo also didn't seem ideal for a curry dish. Maybe they should rethink how they package this combo? What happened to this place??? My go to for Thai food right now! Authentic and delicious, and portion sizes for the price is very fair. Compared to other places in the area, this is the place to eat Thai! I've ordered here multiple times, and I usually order: Tom Yum Soup - a bit on the sour side but overall great taste Pad Thai - flavorful. Just simply great. Everyone was scarfing their food down and exclaiming how good it was. Not to mention there wasn't one single mix up in the order. Everyone got exactly what they had ordered which was impressive. I think the best part was that they labeled every single dish that was ordered. So when it came time to figure out who had what, all we had to do was read the label and distribute it. Restaurant itself is very cute and the owner was very sweet, offering me a glass of water as I waited. To aid in ordering they also have pictures of all their offerings hanging on one of the walls. Super helpful if you aren't familiar with Thai food. My drunken Udon noodles with chicken was very oily and spicy although I had requested not spicy. Very disappointing . Thai North is found in the Oak Square area of Brighton, pretty much across the street from the YMCA. It is in a rather unassuming location, almost hidden from view. But their food is anything but unassuming. Based on a review in a food blog, a few of us decided to give Thai North a try. We especially liked the fact that it's not your typical Thai restaurant. What makes Thai North stand out is the Isaan cuisine from northern Thailand (hence the name of the restaurant). It used to be the case that the Isaan cuisine was only listed on a chalkboard and available only if you knew how to read it. Thank goodness they now not only put up great pictures of all the possible dishes, but also have the English translation on the back page of the menu. So - just ignore most things on the menu and go straight for the Isaan cuisine on the back of the menu. While most Thai food is a bit sweet with some spiciness, Isaan cuisine seems to be more savory. It possesses a richness and complexity in flavor that, while delicious, is difficult to describe. We absolutely loved the Chiangmai Noodle Curry, with its chicken leg, masaman curry, egg noodles, crispy noodles, red onions and other veggies. The curry enriched the noodles and is actually a good broth to put other noodles in there if you have a hankering to take it home. The Northern BBQ plate was a close second to the noodle curry. The Thai North dumplings were a bit like a savory mochi with chives and positively melted in our mouths. The Duck Salad (larb) is very rich in flavor (a warning to those who may not like more pungent tastes). To finish off the meal, we had their Thai Mango with Sticky Coconut Rice dessert. The delivery girl was extremely nice and pleasant (another thing you cant say about other asain restaurants around the area. I stopped in for a quick dinner and ordered the fresh rolls with tofu and red curry with sticky rice. Overall the food was incredibly bland. The curry was so one dimensional and boring, only mildly spicy and yet somehow the spice overpowered the little flavor that was there. The rolls were equally boring and filled mostly with iceberg lettuce. The servers were all very nice, prompt, I always had a full glass of water, and the restaurant itself was cute -- hence the three stars. The menu was also expansive. I get the sense that this is a good option for takeout. I also get the sense, however, that this is Thai food turned way down for people who find the bold, unctuous flavors of northern Thai food, the necessity of nam pla, and the sometimes painful spice levels to be overwhelming. The red curry had absolutely no depth of flavor, which is worrisome given what a staple it is. I'm not super interested in trying anything else based on my experience. If you want complex, authentic Thai, it's worth the trip to S&I in Allston. Thai North will get the job done, but the food is forgettable. read more

Thai North is the light in the dark of Brighton dining, and consistently brings joy to my friends and I, especially through this winter. Friends, family, southern gentlemen, strangers to the wonders of Thai and South Asian cooking have swooned after first bite at Thai North. Definitely choose from the Chef's Specials and the Black Board. The rest of te menu is great, but therein is found the good stuff, idiosyncratic from other standard Thai restaurans. Eat in if you can, instead of takeout or delivery, for fresher dishes with more vegetables. All the people are super nice and friendly, and they will turn up or down the spice level at your request. We came in on a weeknight after experiencing Thai food cravings at a local watering hole. The place is really tiny- which makes it convenient for people watching! What we had: Tom Kha with chicken, Tigers tear salad, Curry-marinated chicken Shrimp sumai, Cashew-pineapple chicken, and Thai iced tea. But the shrimp sumai (steamed) and the tigers tear salad were BOMB! The spicing on the beef was honestly what made that dish....and was some of the best ever. The restaurant is quite small but not crowded when we walked in around 7:30pm on Sunday. We ordered Tiger's tear salad and som tum tard (papaya salad with assorted sides), which was pretty huge. This is very filling for two people so don't order more than this unless you have more people in your party. You can also let then know of the spicy level of your food. With our previous trips, we have tried multiple dishes. We love the tigers tear and somtum. But we didn't enjoy the pad thai and grilled pork neck so much. For the past two years my wife and I have lived up the street from Thai North, after moving into our apartment then, we wanted food and we did not want to cook. From our first visit back then, we have come back so many times I've lost count. The food is alway excellent, we make a point to order something different each time we come in, a goal which has become incredibly difficult since I first had the honey sesame chicken. And the service is just lovely, they will always greet you with a smile and even when you butcher the pronunciation of the authentic Northern Thai menu that can be found on the wall, food items you may not find anywhere else except for Thailand. Overall, decent, but not what I was expecting at all. The "basil" pad thai had a decent flavor, but not even a hint of basil, maybe 5 bits of scallion, and very little sauce. (see photo) The "Golden Triangle" was not at all as described (Although in fairness, the slivers of chicken and herbs inside the deep fried wonton was also flavorful)., so another let down. The sauce that came with them was in a container barely a third full, and had very little flavor. (see photo) The woman on the phone taking the order was very nice, as was the delivery guy who showed up earlier than the 40 minutes that was quoted, so I appreciate that. I have heard good things about this place, so I probably will try it again, but for this time around, basically a C/C-.
