Thai O'Brien's is pretty good! Mostly it's a take out place, every time we go and sit down no one is there. Which is kind of nice- I was able to take a phone call and not bother anyone. The place is dimly lit but cozy. The bar is attached at the back and is a separate entrance, we have been there a couple of times too. The owner and the wait staff were all very friendly and attentive. We got hot sake, shrimp dumplings, soup and ginger chicken with brown rice. I could tell everything was made fresh, it took about 25 min for food to come out. The shrimp dumplings were so good, packed with shrimp. Mild flavor and the wrapper wasn't too thick which was nice. Looked hand made actually. My husband liked his soup but I think it was too spicy. It was a giant bowl! I wish they asked us how spicy to make it. The hot sake was decent and what you would expect, it was served in a cute tea pot. I loved my ginger chicken. The mushrooms in the dish were excellent, super big pieces and juicy. Not regular button mushrooms. It was a nice surprise. I love mushrooms. Chicken was tender. Flavor was good and ginger was not over powering. The nutty brown rice went well with it. Well well well , where to start ?? I've passed by this place for 20 years and YES for 20 years I kept telling myself one day I'll try . Well I can honestly say I regret waiting 20 years haha !! But I was also waiting for the right company , but that's a story for another day . Anyways , here's how it went : The vibes in this place are simply AWESOME from the moment you walk in the door . They have festive and colored lights everywhere and a cozy atmosphere. We sat at the bar and right the way lovely Ray was very helpful , professional and knowledgeable of the menu . We had beef and shrimp Pad Thai and chicken pineapple rice . We drank beer and Blue Hawaiian. Played darks and got to chat with Ray , whom is a total blast to hangout with . Came here for a Mardi Gras Dinner and it was fabulous. Was able to bring your own Rum and mix with the drinks they have, got an awesome special on the oysters ($1 each), and we had the lobster boil with shrimp, potatoes, awesome sauce, and all the good stuff. I recently hosted a ladie's night here for a group of 10 people on a saturday night, and i could not stress how pleased we all were. first off, we made reservations for our large group. They called the day before to check in, which was a good sign. we showed up about 15 mins early. Our table was ready and waiting. we were lucky to have the place for ourseleves at 8 PM. prices were fair, the apps came out quickly, and we all loved our food. my pad thai with shrimp was incredibly saucey, which was a little disappointing, but i liked the flavor and felt the portion was huge. i ended up taking most home. i asked for medium spicy, but it had a light spice to it. it tasted better later in the night. my friend and i shared the scallion pancakes, and if we could get these again, we would for sure. they were so good - not greasy at all and so much scallions! i sampled the pineapple fried rice, i enjoyed the abundance of pineapple, but felt it lacked that fried rice appeal of a crunch. everyone loved the veggie dumplings & the service was good! the bar in the back is such a gem! we were here along with 2 other people until about 1 am, slow night, but we loved that. we took over the kareokee which is free, and theres 2 mics. lounge area has some games too. drinks are about $8, and pretty good. chill spot, easy to find, fun atmosphere. looking foreward to come back. read more

The food from the restaurant has GREATLY improved in the last year. I love their theme nights and the fact that weekends has security . So I order by phone to pick up a large tum yum soup with Chicken and a large rice when I go pick it up the rice is a super small size that with three scoops you're done and the soup had shrimp and not chicken so I call back and say that I asked for chicken and not shrimp, they want to have a back and forth with me saying that I did not order chicken so much that it's frustrating next thing u know this guy has the nerve to tell me that he doesn't mind charging me for another ? Are u kidding me? OK, I'm no Thai expert. But today I channeled my inner Jew and since we celebrated Xmas last night we decided to go Asian today. I'd seen this place in my travels, and decided to give it a shot. First, we had Zombie's. A little sweet for me, but a nice boozy cocktail served in a killer Tiki ceramic mug. We shared their fried dumplings and spicy boiled wontons. Both were waaaay above average, obviously hand crafted in house. Delicious. We then had a chicken dish, a shrimp special (a bit pricey at $16) and the most freaking incredible chicken fried rice I've ever had. The fried rice was worth a detour, if it turns out this good every time. Moist, large strips of chicken, Thai basil, and not the usual soy bomb/orange colored rice at all. Tender, moist, and terrific, with that nice 'taste of the wok' smoky flavor. I'll go back and revisit, but this place was terrific. I did take a walk back to the attached bar, O'Brien's. Apparently Pad-see-uu is not part of lunch special but hey let the customer figure that out when they see the check than telling them on the phone it's not included. Not to mention did not include the wonton soup (see the picture, it clearly includes Wonton soup) that was supposed to be part of the lunch special. Guys, plan and simple - I don't care if I have to pay 15$ for lunch but don't do shady business. Let the customer know what they are getting and what they are paying for. Restaurants that does shady things like this are rare and needs to be pointed out. I don't plan on going back here. Thought I'd share. I didn't want to do it, but I have to. Instead of my normal Thai fix, I decided to go out of my way and try something different and sadly, regretted it. Thai O'Brien's has great customer service but for me, if the food quality doesn't match then "eh"! I called in for an order of the Pad si-io (Pad see ew) and was told that it would be ready in no more than 5 minutes which was amazinnnnng because starving was an understatement. When I finally made it, I ended up ordering another Pad see ew which I was told would take about 10 minutes -- not bad! Both the cashier and the younger boy inside of Thai O'Brien's were very pleasant. I was double parked so the younger gentleman said he would have no problem bringing my orders to my car -- sweet! When the food finally arrived, I could smell it and immediately wanted to dig in but I composed myself. The moment I opened the food and again got a giant whiff of the smell again I knew this was going to be so so good! WRONG. Thai O'Brien's lacks so much flavor and I wanted to be a fan so bad but my experience was less than good. Two orders of Pad see ew -- $20. Because of the service, I would be willing to give this place another try but they really have to kick it up on the flavor department. Planets have aligned to present this gem in midtown Bayonne in an unassuming venue that precariously is situated almost under a bridge. Do not let the locale fool you. The best Thai Food in Bayonne lies within. The front is intimate; great for a business lunch or date night. Bomb appetizers include all of the dumpling options, the chicken wrap as well as the satay. The BBQ pork Chops entrée is a staple almost every time I step into this place...and don't sleep on the mango chicken or the beef with green beans either. Order the Pineapple fried rice as a side to share and you have executed yourself a winning combination. The back bar is friendly as well...if you would rather a low key bar environment than a restaurant...they will bring your food directly to the bar. Highlights are the cheap PBR pints,($2 all day) Skittle Vodka shots and Dave being awesome. Delivery isn't the fastest I have ever seen...but if you are ordering it is worth the wait! read more

This is quite a nice and quiet Thai restaurant. Its a bit small but I definitely do like the ambiance where its quiet and dark. And the background music they play are really interesting, I was quite surprised to hear Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon soundtracks being played in the background. Got me to enjoy my meal in a really peaceful mood. I tried their Coconut soup and Massaman Chicken. Originally I thought I had ordered the massaman curry since that is a pretty standard in most of the Thai restaurants, so I was bit surprised when they brought out a stirred fried plate. The soup I thought was decent, I think I prefer the lemon grass version more though as its more common and more authentic. The chicken was pretty good but I didn't feel it to be a very Thai dish. However for the ambiance and the price I think this is a pretty good place that warrants additional visits when I'm in the area. Next time I would like to visit the bar area as well, looking at the pictures online I get a vibe that its very different from its restaurant counterparts. This doesn't taste thai at all. I got pad thai, laad na and chicken fried rice. I think the only good thing was the pu pu platter. The scallion pancake was $10 for 4 small pieces. The pad thai tasted like a lot of ketchup was in it, the laad Na tasted like nothing and the chicken fried rice was full of soy sauce. Nice place, good food, great alcohol. My husband and I decided to drop in and see what it was about. We shared a calamari appetizer. I loved it, thought it was perfectly done. I had chicken curry in green sauce, my husband had chicken curry in red sauce. Both were very good. I liked mine, thought it was a lot of meat for the price, and he thought his was not quite spicy enough. He always says that, though. We didn't stay for dessert. Service was excellent. The place is small, seats 20 at the most, but it is nice. No parking, though, only street parking. I forgot to give them the Shop Bayonne card but I heard that they take it. As a self proclaimed Thai food connoisseur, I'm very picky with how authentic the food is. I ordered the Pad Thai and Pineapple Fried Rice, both of which were amazing. The restaurant chose a great chef because the dishes were seasoned with many nuances most americanized Thai restaurants lack. The generous portions were exactly what you'd expect from a Thai restaurant and the service was top tier. Pad thai had an unappealing sweet grilled smell with old brown bean sprouts and no veggies. FOUR single wings with fried rice for almost 10.00! No flavor, no spice, old tasting food. Well it's review time! :) I went here for a dinner date pre-sleepover with some girlfriends last night. It is a cozy little restaurant, small but very clean and nice spot with a bar at the corner & there is probably more inside that I didn't get to see. I've been passing by this place since I was a teen and I used to read it and go "What the heck is that?" Lol but now I know. The Thai food was great especially if you're on a budget. I never leave a Thai restaurant without getting Thai iced tea & it was good. I've had better Thai food but I mean what can you say, it was decent food for a decent price & a quaint little area to eat & cozy atmosphere. I'm gonna make this review from a delivery standpoint. I know I'll never go in to have a Coors and Pad Thai, but I've ordered from TOB's a couple of times. Sadly, I don't think I'll be ordering from there anymore. No food is bland and delivered cold. The Pad Thai has almost no peanuts and if you order it with a meat or chicken, you'll be hard pressed to find no more than a few unsavory pieces. This place is on a corner of the beginning of a residential area and looks like a local neighborhood bar. The entrance is not in front of the building but on the side, almost alley-like. When you first walk in you have to go down a few steps, like the garden apartment of a brownstone. Once we walk in, we are instantly greeted and taken to a table. I've never had to wait, even when the place is relatively busy. There aren't many tables, maybe 10 tables of 2-4 ppl each. It seems like they do a lot of take out and deliveries bc the phone the always ringing and the delivery person is in and out during my meal. I believe there is a $2 delivery charge beyond a certain radius. The food is always good. When very hungry we start off the roti canai and/or calamari. Both deep fried dishes that are equally hot, crispy, tasty and not too greasy. I've also had the lettuce wraps which is fresh and delicious. Pad thai has a great balance of sweet and savory. Thai fried rice is always good. The pork chop is extremely tasty with a bit of crispness and never overdone, which is always my big fear with pork. Curries are good too but the portions aren't too big. We usually end up taking home food bc we order a lot and the portions are large enough that all our left overs can go in one or two boxes. During the summer, we order the mango and sticky rice for dessert when mangoes are in season. So good! I'd recommend Thai O'Brien to anyone. read more

I recently moved to Bayonne, and we drive past Thai O'Brien's all the time. It has an amusing, ethnically-confused name and looks sort of like a dive bar from the outside. But on the inside it is really quite nice. I am usually disappointed when I go to Asian restaurants and order my food to be extra spicy. Usually a restaurant gives me the White Guy Spicy scale; which is to say, not spicy at all. But I got the Pad Thai with 3 out of 4 spicy stars, and it was about the most I could handle. I can't remember the last time I actually was challenged to eat the whole thing. It was crazily good, too. They have this homemade spicy sauce that has just the right blend of sweet and spice, and as the guy said, "it goes with everything". Sadly I won't be living in Bayonne much longer, but I will definitely try to hit this place up soon. If you go, don't be turned off by the external appearance. It really is quite nice. read more
