I was surprised how sweet and thick the coconut milk broth was in our Tom Kha soup. Never had Tom Kha like that in the dozen or so Thai eateries I have visited previously. The flavoring for the Golden Grilled Salmon tasted like a slightly sweet & salty soy sauce; veggies in the dish were just as I like them - al dente. My cousin's meet regularly for dinner and have recently been dragging along. Thai One On has become a regular in the rotation. Food is always fresh and full of flavor. Definitely worth a try........ But wait, there's more..... We have been here probably 10 times this last year, and on multiple occasions the dinning party included my niece, her husband, and child. This last trip there were 5 adults dinning. When the bill came, they had added an extra 20% LARGE PARTY FEE. When questioned about it, we were told they add 20% to parties of 5 or more. Worse pad Thai I ever had. Ordered two chicken pad thai done the exact same way. One bowl was dry af and cold and the other bowl you could barely see the noodles because there was so much sauce, it was wild. Neither tasted like a normal pad thai. There are much better places in the area. read more

There aren't too many good Thai options in north county, so while this place is really 3.5 stars, I am rounding up to 4 stars since it's one of the better Thai restaurants in this area. I usually come here for the lunch special which comes with the most savory tom yum soup, an egg roll, and a salad. My favorite dish here is the panang curry which is the right about of thickness and has a good balance of sweet and savory. Service is rather during slow during the lunch rush so be sure to order earlier than later. Considering I usually order the lunch special, the portion is still rather generous. If you really love Thai food, this is a good alternative if you happen to be in the area. read more

most fridays MICHAEL, my oldest son, and i slip off for lunch together. we're partial to spicy, exotic food, a passion not always shared by the rest of the family. not anxious to make the pilgrimage from CARLSBAD to LINDA VISTA (for THAI PAPAYA) in what i reasoned would be heavy traffic a few days before CHRISTMAS, i made the unilateral decision we were eating at THAI ONE ON in VISTA. when asked where we were headed, i made it clear he was going to hate the idea but would in time grow to recognize my genius -- i often frame my "suggestions" like that (correctly) anticipating his response. when i told him THAI ONE ON, the groan was audible. the restaurant is within walking distance of his work. to say he's a regular would be an understatement. sometimes if you want a "unique" experience, you can go where you always go and order menu items you never order. i'll spare you my standard THAI-food's-more-than-eggrolls-and-Pad-Thai lecture but that's a lot of the sub-text here : i knew there were going to be leftovers (we always eat family-style and order extra food) and made a point of getting the GOLDEN FLOWER PASTRIES (chicken and potato stuffed pouches with a cucumber chutney) for my thirteen-year old daughter who was too busy shopping to join us. she's a fiend for anything samosa-like and these fried, purse-style dumplings were right up her alley. astoundingly cute and fun to eat they were a major hit both in the restaurant and in the feeding frenzy around the kitchen island when we got home. the PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND MUSSELS (lemongrass, THAI basil and wine steamed in a clay pot) were nothing like i expected. as an appetizer, i assumed this would be an undersized dish, light and citrusy but instead we were served a hardy bowl of what i'm pretty sure were NEW ZEALAND green-lip mussels slathered with a deep, smoky, slightly cloying sauce with prominent dark (sweet) soy flavors (like PAD SEE EW). the mussels were plump and meaty and, with a small bowl of jasmine rice, filling enough to be lunch by themselves. the HOR MOK (PHANG NGA BAY on the menu) is a classic THAI dish (shamelessly stolen from their CAMBODIAN neighbors) of fish (sole in this version) in a savory, red curry paste and coconut cream custard steamed in a banana leaf "bowl" (stitched together with toothpicks) until the eggs set. check out CRYSTAL B's HOR MOK photo and rave review which were my inspiration for eating at THAI ONE ON. OMG. even though the kitchen forgot to dial up the heat (ordered 9 and got 1 as the slightly embarrassed server confessed) the dish was outstanding. i adjusted the spiciness table side with ground chilies from the condiments and was immediately wowed. hardy and rich, this is a soul satisfying meal and, since there were two "bowls," one went home for dinner. the cabbage and basil that line the mixture's bottom add nice herbal notes and a slightly crunchy texture. will asked for extra red curry paste next time to punch up the flavor that got washed out when spooned with jasmine rice. the boy couldn't stop raving about the THAI QUAIL. moist and flavorful, a tasty, eat-with-your-hands kinda dish with fried rice (with raisins and cashews) whose sweetness was a nice complement to the entree. we packed the leftovers and ordered the TOM YUM GOONG (a clear, sour soup with shrimp) and YELLOW CURRY with chicken for the wife, daughter and youngest son (there are four) and headed home. ps: begrudgingly MICHAEL acknowledged as we were leaving lunch was exceptional and father really does know best. some moments in life are just so gratifying ... pps: apparently MICHAEL was truly inspired. he went back sunday night and had the THAI RACK of LAMB. read more

Coworker and I ordered to go for two lunch specials. Mine was a Tom Kha spice level 6 and a Thai tea with boba. Soup was perfectly spicy for me and the Thai tea boba was pretty good. The weird part for me was the salad was placed in a bag, lol. And it's only like 2 bites? Not a big deal I guess since it was only ~$9.50 for a lunch combo (spring roll, salad + main) Not too far from work. I think next time though I won't order the lunch special. read more

It's amazing. The flavor is the most "authentic" I've found in San Diego county as a whole. 5 stars for food quality and flavor for sure! However I want to give maybe 3/5 stars on price because their pricing seems to fluctuate every week or so. I understand businesses can do whatever they please with their pricing and I harbor no hard feelings for that. However the food has stayed the same, the portions haven't increased, yet there's been a 4.50$ raise in price on the curry in the span of two months (maybe a little less time. I can't remember the exact day but I've only just discovered this place two months ago). I also don't order meat, I only get tofu every time and tofu is literally 80c at the grocery store so I know it's not expensive like meat Anyway overall the staff is really friendly every time and the flavor is awesome. I probably won't come as often as I would love to because I can't really justify 16$ for a little tub of curry! (I've also only ever ordered take out.) Rating is based on food. I ordered through DoorDash, so I can't rate on service. I ordered fried rice and it was absolutely bland. It had no flavor at all. I also ordered a spice level and there was no spice added into the dish. Not to mention, the order for fried rice was $16 and it came in a tiny to-go box. Amazing taste until a mussel looked a bit funny. Upon looking at it closer, I saw legs coming out the muscle. It was a cockroach. Thai One On is my go to Thai food in North County. I've ordered about 1/2 of the menu and am never disappointed. Some of my favorites include: Tom Kha - great flavor, good amounts of filling (meat, veggies etc) Thai Spicy Fried Rice - a little more flavor than the standard fried rice, but great flavors Drunken Noodles - these noodles soak up all the flavor and spicy they throw at them. Yellow and Red Curries are also great. Pineapple Curry is a good mix of sweet and spicy. As you can see.. it's good. If you like Thai food, you'll would probably like it. read more

As a self proclaimed Pad Thai expert my rating is 6.5/10 The noodles were thinner than of my preference, they were a bit skimpy on the tofu, but the biggest demerit was that it just wasn't that spicy. It's funny how when you want Thai food nothing else will do, not Vietnamese, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese. The reason I say that is a lot of people simply think "Asian" basically meaning a dish with rice and it's really mostly the rice part that limits them from differentiating different cuisines and possibly cultures... I loved the expansion to the beer/wine bar nextdoor. It's a much more casual than the main restaurant which seats maybe 100 instead of 25. Nice tall bartop, smallish booths and tables both standard and tall. Well decorated with TV's and subtle queues. The beer selection here is different from the main restaurant. Mostly craft beers and inexpensive to mid priced wines. The menu is expansive and varied. Plenty of vegetarian dishes and some realy good mock meat offerings. Basically seitan. I'm a fan of the mock duck meat, tender, flavorful, plentiful. The papaya salad is bland, holds up to heat much better, go +1 or +2 from what you usually get a hot dish. I would prefer more tang and a heavier fish sauce flavor. PSE uses the right hints of dark soy sauce (yes there is a difference from the red and green bottles you normally see). The curries could use more galangal, garlic as they tend to not mix well in high spice offerings. The rice is well cooked. The tom yum is plentiful, but missing mushrooms. Kua Kai is another fat noodle dish I like that's slightly less on the dark soy. I'm not sure who Bill is, probably the owner, I've been here dozens of time, never met him, the staff doesn't quite seem to be personable enough to really engage their guests at that level. The service is slow when busy and mediocre when not. Forget about bringing a large party. I find their fish dishes to be lacking the panache, the plating the flair of other Asian cuisines, though I know Thai to be on par, just not here. They seem to have a propensity for Duck, though I found their roast to be a bit dry and not crispy enough. Perhaps because I'm used to the air fluffed Chinese style. Larb was overpowered by the onions, I prefer a hint of curry powder to go on top so when the lime hits it, it's more than just a separate acidity. Satay is good, but their peanut sauce is runny, I prefer a thicker sauce. Prices are on par with most thai food around, Décor is actually quite nice, nothing overwhelming. Bathroom needs work, staff needs training, no purse hooks at the bar, parking is bad, and the valet doesn't make it much better (yeah valet on weekends). Beer selection in the main menu is basic. I was surprised their beer wasn't ice cold seeing as that style of serving is most common in Thailand (ice rocker barrels). I don't like having to go to the bar every time I want a craft beer which is more often than not got a little too much head. read more
