I used to go to Thai Original BBQ Studio City location. This is an OG brand and was the go-to spot for amazing, flavorful chicken before all the modern fried chicken spots showed up on the map a decade or so ago in LA. Many years have passed and I still remember their legendary S-1 entree, which is grilled chicken with their incredible thai sauce, on the bed of shrimp-fried rice. Many locations have shut down, but as I was driving by on Reseda blvd and saw the familiar to me, yellow sign of this OG Thai place, I just had to stop by for a bite. As above-mentioned, S-1 was my selection and it brought back so many memories. Even though chicken game has evolved in LA, with multiple different spots and plethora of flavors and recipes, this chicken still held its own, it was still good, juicy, flavorful and when dipped into their sweet, honey-like sauce, it became extraordinary. It's still probably the tastiest grilled chicken out of the Thai spots in LA, as most spots serve it somewhat dry. The place itself looks pretty old and the customer service was kinda average, with the waiter being distracted and not very attentive. Other than that, that S-1 grilled chicken entree is still very good if you're a fan of grilled chicken like myself. I'd come back again! read more

Third time here but first time dining in. Interior is definitely dated but gives a nostalgic feel for those who grew up visiting old school Thai restaurants. The staff were attentive, friendly and quick to bring dishes to the table. As usual, we ordered the go to green curry. It was creamy, flavorful with the perfect amount of heat. Be warned, what may look like green beans floating in the broth are in fact chili peppers. Shrimp were cooked perfectly. The spicy seafood with basil leaves was really good! Definitely spicy with a subtle sweetness from the sauce and basil leaves. The proteins included shrimp, fish, calamari and mussels. Also lots of chili peppers! 3.5 overall. Good large portions . Not the best ambiance to be honest . It's been around for years and there were many loyal customers when we went. I got the shrimp pad Thai . It was tasty and a huge portion. The peanuts however were rancid in my dish . It threw off the taste a bit . My Thai tea was not watered down which was awesome! Service was ok. I've been eating here with my family for years! We used to go to the Panorama City one for a long time and then started going to this location since it's closer and more convenient. Parking lot is awful and really small so just be aware of that. There is street parking on the side but tends to also be really full because of the apartments around. There's no beating the chicken plate. It's perfectly cooked and the rice is super good with the sweet n sour sauce it comes with. Always ask for extra sauce! They come in the tiniest containers so you'll need like 2-3 per plate in my opinion because it's so good with every bite. I feel like this time around, they didn't put as much rice? Had the pleasure of trying the Pad Thai and Gulf of Siam dishes as take out at the Thai Original BBQ. The Pad Thai was exceptional, with perfectly cooked noodles and a well-balanced mix of flavors. Nice service. Food was ok. Ordered the S2, drunken fried rice with beef, and crispy duck. The cook obviously has good technique however the food was lacking flavor on the shrimp rice & protein. The duck and pork ribs were a bit dry like they were cooked the day before then re-heated. Not bad but just not 100% fresh. I think this place has a lot of potential to be great but just needs some more support. The drunken fried rice however was fresh and flavorful (we requested mild spicy). We also ordered Thai tea, good but I've had better/stronger flavor. Im not sure I would come back but I would maybe give it another try if they improved. read more

Thai Original BBQ & Restaurant is part of a chain in a Northridge stripmall. Two rooms, the side room is big enough to hold a banquet. The crystal clear acquarium is its only notable center piece.  Nice, quiet, efficient service. The waiter was kind enough to point out that I could get a better deal in getting the dinner special  than ordering the same item à la carte. The menu here serves the standard Thai dishes that appeal to a mostly non-Thai clientele.  1) Friend let me try a fried crispy almost crunchy Spring roll. Skin is a little dry, but the filling of chopped up bits of shrimp, pork, chicken, glass noodles, carrot, cabbage flavoured with Nampla/fish sauce, black pepper was a pleasing filling.  Accompanied by a sweet-sour sauce. 2) Chicken Ruby is a chicken the size of a large Cornish Game Hen. Battered and fried to a pleasant crispiness. Bit of old oil scent. Perhaps fresher cooking oil would have avoided that. Meat in places was a bit dry so brining the chicken would have made the meat texture more moist and pleasantly meaty.  Inside of the chicken, which is conveniently split in two, is stuffed with the same filling as what is in the deboned fried "Angel Wings". Pâté of chicken meat, glass noodles, carrots, onion flavoured with Nampla/fish sauce, black pepper. (A little garlic would have added more earthy, funky aromatics.)  A small cup of thickened, sweet, mild chile sauce paired well. But also added some pickled green chile pepper & pickle juice to add a acidic gastrique to pep up the dry chicken meat.  Shrimp fried rice with two lush shrimp seemed as though ketchup was added and the rice was tossed around in the wok.  Cooking here seems indifferent since it doesn't have to cater to a more discerning Thai clientele. No complaint about the prices which are reasonable, and good deal for the amount of food that you get.  Took half the chicken home to make Asian chicken salad.  3+ stars. read more

You can never go wrong with the S-1 dish. But, the Thai iced tea with boba, though the iced tea was good, the boba was very under cooked. Service was quick and ready within a 15 minute window. This has always been a family favorite, and I can say I am extremely disappointed my food was cold it seemed like they had reheated the chicken and gave me rice that had already been sitting there all day.The chicken was very dry and unpleasant I also got the beef sate which was extremely tough and hard to eat. The only thing that was enjoyable was the cream cheese wontons and even those were a bit cold in the middle, I was excited to share this place with my daughter since I had been coming here since I was a kid and it was just so disappointing driving all the way up the freeway for food I could've disappointed myself with at home. The waitress had a very bad attitude and the service wasn't as good as usual either, nobody came to check on us and even we asked for the bill and told the waitress about our concerns she got an attitude and only fixed 1/2 items that were not up to the restaurants standards. It's weird that online everywhere it says they close at 9pm but when I called to place an order at 6:45pm, they said I needed to be there in 10 mins since they close at 7pm. A different kinda Thai hole in the wall! This restaurant reminds me of my mom's food growing up, my mother immigrated from Thailand in the 70's. I grew up eating BBQ meats like they have here, as well as chicken broccoli stir fry with rice. It's a healthy balanced meal, not too heavy but flavorful with the oyster sauce and fish sauce. The shrimp appetizer was great as well, I loved the sauce! I appreciate how they sliced the kaffir lime leaf finely, I brought home half the dish in a container and the sauce soaked into the lettuce, it was delicious Each entree was between $12-15, not too expensive for the portion size. read more

Provender: this is a great spot to grab some Thai barbecue. I ordered the beef S8 meal, which comes with shrimp fried rice; beef skewers; cucumber, onion, and jalapeño garnish; and dipping sauce. The dipping sauce is on the sweeter side and the garnish - though sweet - can be spicy because of the jalapeños. Prices: the S8 meal will run you about $15. Parking: there is parking in front of the restaurant and additional spots on the north east corner of the lot. I want it to be 8/10 but it's coming in at 7.89 stars. The chicken was super fatty lower quality meat in the curries. It just didn't have the right ratio of fat to coconut milk to curry paste, in the different curries. The noodles look great. Maybe we'll try that next time instead. We just won't order meat. As a word of advice to the business: put higher quality meat and less meat, and more veggies. It would be a healthier meal. All of this said... the ingredients were correct. My friend recommended me this spot. I got take out so I can't say much on the service, but they were nice when I went to pick up my food. I ordered to S2 plates, a side of fried rice, and combination phad see-ew. The S2 plate (bbq pork spare ribs and shrimp fried rice) was really good, except for the shrimp in the fried rice. I wish there was a different fried rice option because the rice itself was very yummy the shrimp was just very bland and had no favor. The portion of this dinner plate is amazing especially for the price, it was around $16 and comes with three ribs. I got full off of one rib. The combination phad see-ew was very yummy and flavorful. I just wish there was more option for the meats; I ordered online and the only options it gave me were seafood, shrimp, or combination. I was looking for either chicken, veggie, or just beef as my choice of meat. It's a good portion for the price as well, two people can definitely share. Overall the prices are what truly stuck out to me, I was about to order from another Thai spot in the valley that was selling spare ribs for $21... and it was going to come with regular white rice. I've been coming here since I was a little kid and it has been my favorite restaurant for thai food in the valley. The whole restaurant looks the same even after a decade later and it's very nostalgic. It's very spacious and calm inside the restaurant, and they even had that same large fish tank for decor. The prices are affordable, especially their lunch specials, and come with a great portion of food. Their pad thai is unmatched in my opinion, and it's the best I've ever tried. The service is good. Unfortunately, the decline in food taste and quality topped with the portion size being much smaller was already two strikes against them. But the real kicker was they cheated us $10.00 on the bill. Where's the integrity of running an honest business? HEADS UP - check your bill before paying. The handwritten bill was for $64.65 but the credit card charge was for $74.11; an almost $10.00 overcharge. Because I didn't personally pay for the bill, the person paying didn't catch the overcharge before signing the credit card slip. Bottom line, they overcharged us $10.00 or added an undisclosed service charge (not printed on their menu) to our bill.
