Random spot in Indiana, but come through for Thai food. I enjoyed the panang curry and pad kee mao. The panang curry was hot, and flavorful. It hit the spot on a cold Christmas day. It was excellent combination with the rice it came with. The pad kee mao was sub par. Flavor was weak and protein pieces were small. Nonetheless, it sufficed for our lunch needs. Asian cuisine is my comfort food. And Thai Recipes has the best Tom Yum Goon where every spoonful soothes the soul! Whenever I'm under the weather, I like a nice warm soup (like who doesn't, right?!) I found out about Thai coconut soup from another place at 56th street, but was so thrilled to find Thai Recipes Restaurant on the south side of the city. And their soup is amazing. I recently tried their chicken and beef pad Thai, and again amazing! They have a really good coconut chicken soup as well if you're not a seafood lover, that I would recommend. And everything is so reasonably priced. If you're going for the first time, maybe go during their lunch hours, for you to try some items at a smaller portion and a slightly smaller price. But you can get a feel for it before you order dinner, at a slightly higher price. Still reasonable just slightly higher. I've not had an opportunity to dine in- I usually order to-go. Toast appetizer was $9 for four tiny pieces of oil soaked toast. Almost sent this back instantly. Portioning is a joke. Tom Yum was flavorless and also a small bowl. Owner was our server & was very cordial. I had the pineapple fried rice. I feel it could use more sweetener, perhaps some pineapple juice. Serving size was smaller than most Thai restaurants I have eaten at. We were the only customers at 5 pm on a Saturday, so hopefully they do better. On the outside, it doesn't look like much and then you step inside and everything is very well decorated and very clean. The staff is polite and they don't unnecessarily bother you while you're eating. The food is some of the best Thai food I have ever had and I will definitely be coming back. Last time I was here I ordered Pad Thai to go and GF ordered Basil fried rice with extra shrimp and beef. Sadly I was in a hurry and did not check the order carefully before leaving. Pad Thai had almost no chicken, and no cilantro, scallion, egg or tofu. The Basil Fried Rice did not have extra beef, and only 2 small shrimp in the whole order. If you go into the restaurant you get good portions and exactly what you ask for. Take out they skimp on everything they can. Portion sizes were about half of dine in sizes. This has been my favorite Thai place since I used to live on the southside. After moving and trying several other Thai restaurants (6 other places) Thai Recipes continues to be the best. It has been at least 2 years since I last had Thai recipes and tonight it was still as good as I remember. The owner is very nice and friendly. Exceptional service and quality of food. I had been hearing great things about Thai Recipes, so I had to try it myself. Now I want to keep going back to try everything! I orders the Drunken Noodles and it was delicious! It is located in a little strip mall with a small parking lot near the corner of Thompson and 31. This is an area that always seems to be busy and construction going on. However it is located right next to the interstate which makes it easy to get to. The menu was extensive with several vegetarian options to choose from as well. There was nothing too distinct inside, but there were plenty of tables considering that it looks small from the outside. I am definitely coming back! read more

A friend wanted to meet for lunch and had never had Thai food so I recommended we go to Thai Recipes for their lunch special. It is in a very unassuming strip mall and you would miss it from the street if you aren't looking. There is ample parking and the space is a big open room with plenty of seats. The ambience is rather dark but has a nice feel and is quiet for the amount of tables they can accommodate. Once you enter they had us sit in any empty table, and immediately we were served a menu, placemat and silverware. The two ladies working were friendly and answer d questions as well as got our selection quickly. My friend got the shrimp pad Thai and I had drunken noodles either veggies. The soup and veggie roll were served almost immediately, and hot the spot on a cold day. It was a tad spicy for my friend but not overly so and I think she enjoyed it. I loved the soup and could almost just eat that for lunch! Her reactions to the pad Thai were amazing as she kept proclaiming over the sauce and the type of noodles and all the aspects. Needless to say she loved it! The portion isn't too large but is just right for lunch. The price is around $9 with water and no add ons of meat etc. it is a great deal for what you get and the quality. My drunken noodles were really Hod if a bit cold and oily. I have a feeling it is hard to know what all will be needed during a lunch special and I got the tail end of a big pot. It was still delicious I think I would just next time either order that for dinner when it is cooked fresh and for lunch get a more typical pad Thai. But it was still wonderful and a very nice atmosphere, so highly recommend it for a delicious lunch bay a reasonable price. read more

So my daughters had dinner here a few days before and all of us had been craving Pad Thai for days, so when I found an extra minute I decided to give this place a try as well. Thai Recipes is in a small strip mall, behind a Taco Bell. Once you walk inside, however, you forget that fact. It is very clean, quiet, decorated tastefully. It isn't too big, just a few tables scattered about. The server was very attentive and was always in view...either right behind the counter (which can be seen from anywhere in the restaurant) or addressing the needs of other customers. I started my meal off with a glass of ice water and a hot green tea and it was HAWT! It came with an entire little self serving pitcher which was great, I didn't have to keep asking for refills. I am a sucker for vegetable tempura so that immediately caught my attention. When it got to my table it wasn't what I expected, but that might be my fault. I have only ordered veggie tempura from Japanese restaurants in the past, so I was expecting a light tempura textured batter. This was NOT that. Once again, not saying good or bad, just not what I expected. It was really really crunchy. Almost the texture of a fish stick batter that had hit the fry daddy twice. It was REALLY crunchy. The sweet sauce it came with was yummy. Once again, I was craving Pad Thai...it was my entire agenda. There was no Pad Thai on the menu. There were lots and lots of what I assume were yummy things--but not the thing I came there to eat. Now my daughters said they ordered Pad Thai, so maybe they OFFER it but just don't put it on the menu? Idk. But I didn't feel comfortable ordering it since it wasn't listed. My compromise was Chicken Kao Pad- medium spicy. I'm not a spice girly. And it's all subjective. But I was afraid the mild would be bland with little flavor so I took the risk. It WAS spicy, to my naive taste buds. Definitely had a little kick. Buuuut, it didn't get hotter with each subsequent bite, just stayed the same level...so I was okay with that. The vegetable garnishes were beautiful and I appreciated all the effort invested in the ambiance. The Chicken Kao Pad was fine...but it wasn't Pad Thai. So I left disappointed...not because the food wasn't fine, or the service wasn't excellent...but because Pad Thai wasn't on the menu. I ate about 1/3 and brought the leftovers home for my husband to eat later. If it had been Pad Thai? It wouldn't have made it off the table. If I had walked in the door without any expectations I would have probably had a much better review. So, like I said, I take responsibility for the fact that I was jaded and most of my *few* complaints are tainted by my disappointment. My daughters seemed to love their Pad Thai, so maybe I should have had the courage to walk into a place I had never been before and ask for something not listed on the menu...maybe I will do that next time... But I wouldn't order the crazy crunchy veggie tempura again, and I would def call ahead to see if the can make Pad Thai even though it's not on the menu. $30-ish with tip seemed like a lot to pay and still walk out disappointed. read more

My husband got the pineapple stir fry was too sweet and had many large chunks of pineapple. They also had the news on loud enough for everyone in the restaurant to hear. I dont want to hear that. Love this family owned business!!! I always get the basil fried rice with tofu and I don't like tofu but I love it here! The rice has great flavor and medium is the perfect spice level (for me at least lol) The portions are huge and it's amazing because it's big enough for two meals for me! Parking is free out front. I haven't had proper Thai curries this good since Tum Rup Thai in Minneapolis. We ordered the green and yellow curries, with fresh-wrapped "summer rolls" -- everything was flawless. As in, so good I couldn't wait for the next bite. The rolls were rolled tightly, and were HUGE -- salad in a wrap, with crunchy FRESH veg and lovely sauces. The curries arrived just as we finished the rolls: Silky, rich, complex sauces, terrific fresh ingredients. The owner came to our table to check on us, and explained that everything is made to order, from scratch, using what is fresh THAT DAY. It was so good we ordered takeout so that we could have leftovers. She recommended the Massamun curry -- I'm going back soon to try it. This is now one of my favorite places in Indy. read more

Their lunch special is out of this world. Around $7.68 or something, including a delicious soup and spring roll. The restaurant is small and intimate, but always has enough space. Service is pleasant and fast. You may be wondering, well, why only three stars? I really truly dislike the pad thai, as does my stomach. I've gotten it twice in restaurant and once via Yelp delivery. The first two times it tasted a bit different from other places, but still kinda good, but each time I become quite ill afterwards. Then we ordered it for dinner, and it just tasted bad and I couldn't eat much (but at least I didn't get ill)! So you may be wondering "Um, why did you keep going and ordering it??" A member of my family LOVES this place and gets a different vegetarian dish, and says its their favorite thai place in Indy (including downtown and south Indy). They make this one dish really well. I love to try and support Thai restaurant because I'm Thai hahahaha. I like several of Thai place in Indy but can't deny that Thai recipes is the best. Authentic Thai food 99.99% , I took 0.01% out because the ingredient but it's difficult to find the real ingredient here. I love 66 which is deep fried seafood, shrimp + fish + squid + imitation crab, stir fried with curry paste. You'll not find this menu somewhere else but it's one of the most famous dish for Hong Kong tourist. It usually fresh crab with curry paste. Did a quick search of Thai food while on south side and found this little gem! I see why it had such great reviews. The food was delicious!! Lunch specials for less than $8 include veggi spring roll and flavorful Tom Yum soup. I got the Pad ki Mao (drunken noodles). A lunch mate got Pad Thai, they were both delicious. I would happily eat either. Although we didn't really need the dessert. Opted to share a Ro-Tee banana. It's like a Thai crepe with sweetened condensed mild and goodness... it was really decadent and I kind of wanted a nap afterwards. It felt like a holiday. Staff was attentive.
