TLDR: Don't let appearances fool you - this place has great food! This review comes after trying many Thai restaurants in the area (10!) and ordering the same thing. Thairiffic hits my bay area food snob craving on every level. Ironically, this was the last of the Thai restaurants I tried, and for good reason. It looks dinky and drab from the outside. The name is a dad joke (which I love). Visiting on a random weekday evening, the place was close to empty. As far as appearances go, the place didn't give much to hope for. However, I was beyond pleasantly surprised after receiving my order for pad see ew + pad thai. There were three things immediately apparent that made Thairiffic stand out: 1. Unlike (almost) every other Thai place, Thairiffic honored my request for maximum spice. There is a definite kick for their "Thai hot" level. 2. Unlike (almost) every other Thai place, the Pad Thai had a balanced flavor profile. Other places DOUSE the pad thai in sugar - yuck. This was a Pad Thai with savoriness, saltiness, sweetness, sourness, and spice. Yum. 3. The pad see ew had a distinct wok hei + golden mountain sauce flavor. Nice! I will also say that the shrimp in the pad thai was decently flavorful - same with the beef in the pad see ew. This is in contrast to the often "secondhand slap on" approach to the meats/proteins that I've had at other Thai places. Lastly, the price point here is I think the lowest of all the Thai places I've tried. If I could, I'd give it another star for that alone! The pad kee mao was okay. I think I'll stick to the pad thai and pad see ew. There's a decently sized menu with many other options (eg kao soi) which I'm excited to try. Above all else, I'm happy to find a go-to Thai place that hits the spot in SLO! read more

This is my fourth visit, and I continue to be impressed. I searched for a local place that made chicken fried rice without bean sprouts, and this is it! It's a simple dish, really, but theirs keeps me coming back for more! You can order anything here at 5 levels of spicy heat, even none at all. They're good at special orders. It fills up at standard meal times, so get here early! It's not fancy, so cone as you are. I will definitely be back! read more

I like Thai food but I wouldn't say I'm passionate about it. A friend wanted to experience Thai food for the first time so we thought we'd try Thai- riffic. The hostess at the front desk ( who was also our server) was very pleasant and helpful in suggesting dishes that weren't too spicy. We ordered potstickers which were way overcooked. The Pad Thai was okay but nothing to get excited over. It too was cooked too long and bordered on mushy. The Thai Iced Tea was way too sweet and lacked that signature flavor of cedar. Ying gave us amazing recommendations that fit our table's dietary restrictions (some of us eat only fish, some of us can't eat any spicy food), and everything came out quickly and piping hot. Food was fresh and seriously so good!! The Pad Thai is the best I've ever had. I'll be dreaming of the Tom Kha soup til I have it again. Food is always a 5! Love their food. They are our favorite Thai restaurant. Service is always a 5! However, Ambiance was a 1 this time. They changed the lighting, so that each client was spotlighted with really bright lights. It was uncomfortably bright. Why would they do that???? I've NEVER been to a restaurant where the clients were lit up like they were on the sale block. Doordashed Thai-rrific as I was craving something for lunch that wasn't made by me. LOL They have great lunch specials, and I wanted to get something that wasn't the traditional pad thai or pad see ew. I ordered the lunch special "gaeng peht" with beef. It was red curry with bamboo shoots, basil, coconut milk, and cream with your choice of meat. I got beef. It comes with a side of white rice. I actually loved this!!! It was cooked to perfection. It was maybe a hint over mild, but the spice worked perfectly with the dish. The bamboo shoots were soaked in the curry to give it ultimate flavor. They served it very nicely for takeout -- separated the rice and curry so you can mix it freshly. I would recommend this 10/10. It was a pretty big portion too, so you could potentially split this into two meals. I also ordered thai tea which was alright. I wouldn't order it again. It wasn't the best thai tea I ever had, but I think it might scratch your itch if you were craving it. read more

It was "Time for Thai", so I ordered Phad See Yew with chicken and extra broccoli. Delivery was prompt, value was typical for Thai food, entree was hot, but fairly flavorless. Sad News - MUST READ The owners have sold the restaurant and the result is not good. The menu has completely changed with a limited selection. No noodle soups (my favorites!). It is now extremely overpriced with lunches starting at $14. I can foresee a lot of loyal customers walking away in sadness for the loss of this iconic restaurant. I went in there yesterday at noon and was the only customer there. I spoke with the old owner Ken (who has been there for decades) and he was visibly sad. As many have said, parking here is very troublesome during lunch rush. The lot is tiny and is shared with another business. Once you find a place to safely abandon your vehicle, you'll be glad you made all the effort. There is a sizable lunch special menu at very reasonable prices. I really really wanted to like this new Thairrific. I loved the old one. I know it's more expensive but if the food is improved, it's not a problem. The first time I went in I ordered a traditional Thai street food spicy noodle soup. We used to live in LA and I miss the Thai Town version. This was not bad, and I would have given this new owner 4 out of 5 stars just for having it on the menu. But then I went back, hopeful, and ordered a lunch portion of Pad Kra Pow, a stir fry spicy basil dish every Thai restaurant in the Central Coast serves. It's a basic dish that reveals how good a Thai restaurant is at doing the classics. Now I've tried this in almost every other Thai place within 40 min, and I am SO disappointed to report it is awful, like 1 star awful. I feel bad saying this, but it just is. It's watery, bland, with too little meat. I can't remember when I've had a bad version of this dish. Even the unexciting ones I've had were at least tasty. This was so bland and watery I actually felt cheated of my $12 and sorely missing old Thairrific's simple, cheap but always tasty dishes, especially the unique sambal chicken. Maybe their dinner portions are better, I don't know, Yelp reviews aren't reassuring so far. Every lunch special I've eaten at other local Thai places were good barometers of the overall food quality, because why wouldn't they be? It's generally not good business to skimp on teaser items that pull customers in for more expensive dinner meals. There are many Thai restaurants in the area - they're either cheap and good or more expensive but offer higher quality ingredients/more unique items. Thairrific seems to be occupying a precarious perch as fancier Thai dining with unfortunately little attention to food quality and consistency. Thairrific v2 would do well to learn from rock star veterans in their price bracket - Thai Palace in SLO. Always consistently good, always happy to pay more. What a shame, I had high hopes! Since there's nothing on their dinner menu that other Thai places aren't already rocking cheaper and better, I doubt I'll be back much, if at all. Thai-rrific is located south on Higuera street past downtown. I have walked here from downtown before, but it I would recommend driving - especially if it is dark. The business seems family-run and everyone I have encountered here has been super friendly. However, their food isn't anything special. They do a good job delivering on the classic Thai dishes but I am not "wow"ed by anything with only one exception. Their red curry fried rice is the best menu item BY FAR. I dined-in on Saturday and it was not a good experience. We walked in and no one acknowledged us for a while, in an almost-empty restaurant. There were two waiters walking around, not particularly busy and seemed surprised we were in the restaurant. We finally got sat at the end corner and waited a long time for someone to take our order. Eventually, about 15 minutes later the waitress/host/owner(?) finally approaches our table to awkwardly take our order. But then, something really weird happens: as we had been waiting for about 20 minutes after taking our order, the waitress comes back to our table saying "we are really busy, do you still want to wait or just cancel the order and LEAVE?"!! So I asked her how much longer we had to wait to get our food. She replies that she doesn't know, so I asked her to please check with the kitchen. She then comes back and said it was just gonna be another five minutes...So we just decided to wait, but in retrospect I wish we had taken the option to leave. This interaction was so awkward and totally unnecessary, it made us uncomfortable. We get our food and it's served on PAPER PLATES. Like, low quality, office party paper plates. I did not get the point of that and it felt extremely cheap. They could barely hold the food. But the soup and rice on the other hand were served on regular ceramic bowls. The food was MEH at best, the curry was not a curry, it was soupy and looked like it had been just warmed up, the soup was TERRIBLE, completely tasteless and bland. The noodles and chicken satay were just ok, but not recommended. I would never come back! The service was bad and awkward, the food was not good, and the ambiance needs a lot of work. All of that cost almost $60 for a dinner for two. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for Thai food in SLO. read more

I'm heart broken, and hungry. Thairiffic's lunch specials were the best deal in town, underpriced even at $7.25. This is no longer the case. The new owners have changed the lunch specials. Although some of the previous lunch specials are available in their new regular menu, the coconut marinated chicken is now $18.85 and the sesame ginger beef is $25.95. Though a price increase is to be expected, but this seems excessive to me. Because I was already there, I decided to try one of the new lunch specials. I chose the Pad Kee Mao with chicken , a hard boiled egg and steamed veggies. Is was $10.95, so affordable, but a very small portion as you can see from the pic. I will say the flavor was good, but the dish was a bit dry. I ate it all and now I'm pondering where to stop for something else, when previously I would have taken about half home. I will check back after a few months to see if the have adjusted their portion sizes s's and/or some of their other prices, but until that time, I'm going to pass. read more

This used to be my go to Thai restaurant in SLO. I absolutely loved all there soup dishes, especially the Kai Pa Lo. I moved out of town a few years back but every time I came into town to visit, I always stopped in to get some soup. I recently moved back to SLO, excited to be able to come here weekly to only find out they have new owners and completely changed the menu. Absolutely bummed to learn this.
