I was craving thai and was in Providence for the holiday so naturally I looked on yelp for the closet thai place with good ratings and came across Thai Star. I called for takeout - pad kee mao vegetarian with tofu. I didn't think to look in the bag when picking up my food. When I opened the container I realized they gave me pad thai instead!! I still didn't make a big deal out of it because it was still vegetarian...but when I started to eat my meal I realized it was DRENCHED in oil. The noodles were overcooked an the tofu was burnt (and boy were they stingy with it!!). I didn't even finish the meal for fear of getting sick. So disappointed. read more

You'd never notice it as you swooped by on Chalkstone, but this is a real gem. The shrimp & crab rangoon were creamy and delectable, and there were several vegetarian main dishes. One oddity: the "crispy bowl" is actually a taco salad bowl. I kid you not. But hey, it was still yummy! Additional good features: extremely friendly waitstaff who joke around with you, a dessert menu (with seasonal specials! my husband tried one and really enjoyed it), AND it's BYOB. Food tasted rotten. Water was disgusting and undrinkable so we had to order tea and we had to pay for the tea which I have never been charged for in a Thai restaurant. Dead plants in the window. Waitress was watching a loud foreign movie at the counter while we were trying to eat. Noodles in soup were an extra charge. Waitress also wrapped up a $20 soup in a Chinese fold-up paper box which leaked. Never going back! read more

This is, hands down, my favourite of the local Thai places. Not even a question. Everything I have ever had here has been astonishingly good, from the perfect chicken himmapha (a staple) to the variety of curries, the desserts, drinks, and appetizers. Without fail, I always get the fried tofu triangles for an appetizer. They come with a creamy peanut sauce that's deliciously different from the usual peanuts-in-oil elsewhere. I usually save the leftover sauce and put it on anything else that looks even remotely like a good candidate. I've eaten pretty much everything on the menu, but I keep coming back to: - the chicken himmapha (chicken, pineapple, carrots, onions, mushrooms, and cashews in some kind of AMAZING brown sauce, all served in this pastry basket-thing that, when soaked in the aforementioned sauce becomes this unbelievably tasty magical food) - the beef and celery soup (beef, crunchy celery, bean sprouts, galangal, tastiness, in a giant bowl) and -the green curry (all kinds of wonderful green veggies, including still-crispy green beans in a spicy-basil infused creamy green curry sauce AND it all even makes great leftovers, which lots of Asian food doesn't. Extra special hidden winter-review gem? They make a ginger tea that's at once sweet, spicy, and fabulously bone-warming. I've been visiting Thai Star for nearly twenty years. I 've visited nearly all the Thai restaurants in the area, and it remains my favorite (there are many ties for a close second place!). I don't think any dinner should begin without and order of nime chow, which they call Spring Rolls. These are a raw rice noodle rolls filled with thin rice noodles, basil, shrimp, lettuce and bean sprouts. They are served with peanut sauce and are best with some of the hot chili sauce that's always on the table (ask if it isn't). My daughters skip the hot sauce, but cant get enough nime chow. I have introduced literally dozens to this appetizer, nearly all have become addicted. The Tom Kha Gai soup is also addictive. It's a coconut milk based soup with chicken that tastes like nothing else. For the uninitiated, there are many menu items that will please, such as their Pad Thai or Honey Beef, but for those with bolder tastes or Thai regulars who enjoy spicy dishes, try the Beef Laap or any of their curry dishes, which are very different from Indian curries. The Yum Seafood is also fantastic. All of these go very well with a side order of sticky rice, which can be eaten with your hands and dipped into the flavorful sauces, especially the curries. Most of their dishes can also be made with your choice of meat or seafood. I brought my mother to Thai Star about fifteen years ago. All these years later, she drives 40 minutes each way weekly to have lunch here by herself! She has settled into the same order which she never has to actually order anymore; the spring rolls, sticky rice and beef laap just arrive at her table. It's also BYOB. read more

Best thai food I have had (and I'm asian). Tom Yum and Gao Lao (pork) soups are unbelievable. Chicken Himmapha, Duck Divine, Steak Pad Thai, Chiang Mai Noodles are exceptional. We can't seem to order anything else. Always tastes the same. Service is exceptional, the Owner/waitress is very friendly. Her sister is the Chef. Prices are very reasonable. I only come here for lunch for pad thai once in awhile, they are a little chintzy on the portion of food. I do not like their tom yum soup or noodle soup i can tell the broth they use is a paste that came out of a can! I'm surprised they have been open for a while. I love this place!! Every meal I have had here had always been delicious. I am a spicy food junkie and when you tell them extra spicy they sure as hell do not hold back and I love it. I always get the gao lao soup with beef and it is delicious. Their hot basil with chicken is also amazing as well as any noodle dish. The veggies are always fresh and never soggy and the portions are huge. I always have leftovers. It is also great because it is BYOB. The service is phenomenal, they remember their customers and the one lady always remembers my love for extra spicy food :) They have non spicy food also if you are not a fan. The best Thai food in RI, hands down. Don't be fooled by the humble look of the restaurant. The food is first class, tasry, flavorful Thai. As we head into winter, the Beef Gai Lao soup is a must to start your meal. This medicinal soup is not for the spice averse, but will work better than any sinus medicine. it's also totally delicious, with fresh celery, crunchy bean spouts, earthy broth and tender beef. I've been here a few times, and the food is always consistently awesome! Spring rolls are always fresh and packed with flavor. They really deliver when you ask for spicy. Their shrimp and crab rangoons had a really good flavor, but the texture of the inside was...loose? For entrees we had the pad thai, which i asked for a little spicy. Not spicy at all, and the chicken was dry, but i liked the addition of raw sprouts, gave it a nice texture. Pad See Eiw was also really flavorful. Good portion sizes on both. Had a white rose drink while we waited for the food to be ready, nice sweet coconut/pineapple drink. Went well with the food back at home. I could honestly eat Thai food at least 3 times a week.. and I LOVE variety. However, given all the amazing restaurant options in Providence I don't get it very often. When I do, I love going to Thai Star. I have yet to eat in the restaurant, but its very cute inside and the patrons always appear to be enjoying themselves. Their food in my opinion, is delicious and deftinitely satisfies my Thai cravings.Another huge selling point.. it's BYOB! My first visit to a Thai Star was to the newly opened location at 961 Dyer Avenue in Cranston. This location previously housed an Italian deli and more recently a New York style deli. Although not a very large restaurant it seemed very clean and attractive, and I was greeted by a very pleasant and helpful server. My experience with Thai food is quite limited, but I do have a favorite dish that is not found in many places - pad kra prow (spelling?) As I remember it from the predecessor to Pho Paradise (on Broad Street in Providence) it was a mound of white rice topped with a generous mixture of minced pork and a large portion of chopped Thai basil in a spicy hot dark sauce. This was not on the menu, but they were willing to make it, and it was very good- just the right amount of heat. Their version used sliced pork and not much basil, but I was assured that, if reminded, they would make the change. I'm anxious to try their curry and, of course, their Pad Thai. As good as I could hope for. The vegetarian/fish selection is excellent, the menu is easy to read, and the waitstaff is very friendly and helpful. My husband got some sort of crispy tilapia, and I got tofu lard nar, and both were excellent. Also, I got a really good drink that had pineapple juice, coconut cream, and 7-up. Steamed dumplings are ridiculous. Everything was fresh and tasty... not greasy. A tiny bit more expensive that Apsara, but quality is higher and I like the owner. He's adorable. WAY less crowded than Apsara also, which I really liked. Definitely check this one out. read more

Overall, it was just ok. We got two dishes - chicken pad thai and chicken pad kee mao (drunken noodles). Both were cheap and were pretty large portions. The pad thai was pretty good - sweet, smoky, and the noodles were cooked properly. Maybe it was a little on the sweet end, and didn't have the little bit of tang you get from something a little more authentic, but it is Americanized Thai afterall. The drunken noodles (the dish I always judge a Thai place by) were not so great. The biggest issues was they used the wrong type of noodle - the dish was made with the rice sticks, like pad thai, instead of the flat wide rice noodles that are supposed to be used. I experienced this somewhere in Attleboro too, so maybe this is something the places in New England do. But it is wrong. Otherwise, the sauce was OK - it didn't taste like any other drunken noodles I've had before, as it was a little heavy on the fish sauce, and missing that familiar flavor. But it was not bad. The spice level though was spot on - it was definitely approaching Thai spicy, not dumbed down like a lot of places will do. I live down in the DC area, and there is a ton of really good Thai food, and this wouldn't compare. Overall, if you really want Thai in Providence, this seems to be your best option. read more

NEVER eat here. Horrible service, horrible management, horrible food. I ordered Pad Thai, soup, appetizer and a curry dish.The pad thai was oily, flavorless, tasted and smelled very old, the tofu was hard, the noddles were hard and old. The sauce was like a sour ketchup. After one bite, I told the waitress quietly that it wasn't good, and i wasn't going to eat it. She asked if I wanted to take it home, and I said no. In it's place, I ordered a second curry dish. It was better than the pad thai, but average. When we got the bill, the charge for the pad thai was on there. When I asked if there was a mistake, the owner came out. I told her what had happened and she started yelling that their pad thai is the best and I have to pay for it. I refused and said I only had one bite, and that I was not informed I would be charged for it. She insisted that I must pay because I ordered it. All of the customers (only two other tables) were listening at this point because the owner had lost it. She was shouting and said I don't know anything. I told her she has no customer service and that now, especially after her behavior, I will not pay for it. She stormed into the kitchen s till yelling. read more
