Chicken satay, chicken and shrimp pad thai, thai iced tea and chicken spring rolls.
    Michael M.

If you're in the area this is a good option for Thai food as a decent plate of pad Thai is hard to come by. This place is small and very quiet, but with a very friendly staff. Only issue I had with this place is the Thai iced tea could be a little sweeter and same with the pad Thai as that's what I'm typically use to from the more popular Thai restaurants around New England.

We got takeout from Thai Star at work today and to say the least it was disappointing. I ordered the lemongrass chicken, papaya salad and spicy hot basil fried rice. The papaya salad is very different from what I'm used to. It's good, definitely has some spice, but is sweeter than it is at other places I've had it. The fried rice was decent, not the best or worst I've had, but the lemongrass chicken was not good. It was supposed to be spicy but wasn't, there was very little chicken in it, and what chicken was in there tasted like it had been frozen a while and lacked flavor. I didn't try any of the other dishes people ordered, but the consensus was bland, not fresh and overall underwhelming. Given the many choices available for Thai, I don't foresee myself going back again anytime soon if ever.

I would be very surprised if this place doesn't get shut down by the health department or go out of business based on service alone. Upon ordering my food I could only get my half my order in before it sounded like another customer walked in and I was hung up on. Reluctantly I called back two times. On my third call right before I was about to give up I get an answer and I'm able to complete my order for pick up. I wasn't asked for my name or number but was told It would be ready in about 20 minutes, fair enough. I get there 30 minutes after and the store is closed. I have to walk back to my car and call to have the doors unlocked. Entering the building the place was cluttered and had a faint smell of dust. The coffee pot stashed away in a hoard of items caught my attention. It looked like it had been sitting for ages. One of the employees rushes to the front with two plastic cups spilling ice trying to fill them up muttering under her breath. A few minutes later another lady appears and apologizes for them not having any Thai iced tea. I asked if there was any other tea available but to my disappointment I was offered the stale coffee in the corner of the restaurant I had noticed earlier. The food was mid. The crab Rangoons were soggy and the filling was gross. Also the sweet and sour dripped like water when dipped which was extremely off putting. The coconut shrimp was okay but again, everything had a stale overtone to it. The pad Thai was able to be salvaged by a heavy ration of Siracha. If I could give this place a 0 I would.

The food was fresh, tasty and good quality ingredients. They even use real crabmeat which was surprising and yummy.

    Wings and papaya salad

I'm conflicted. Don't get me wrong, the food is very good, no complaints there, but for what you pay, the portions don't seem to be worth the money. And yes, the area is a bit sketchy - there were plenty of takeout orders, very few eat ins. We were the only ones there when we arrived. The prices have def gone up over the years, very evident from the little stickers with new prices covering the old prices. This won't deter me from visiting again, just throwing out my 2 Yelp Cents. We ordered the chicken wings, papaya salad w/ side of sticky rice and the yellow chicken curry. Wings were pretty standard although we got stiffed and one of the wingettes was a nub only - comes with a sweet/spicy dipping sauce. The papaya was good - different than how I make or have had elsewhere as this version doesn't have shrimp paste, but you can request it. I've paid less for double this portion at local Asian markets/Asian Bakery. And, I would think that $13.50 for a curry dish, it would come with a side of white rice, but I had to pay extra for it? Yet lunch combos come with a side of white rice? Beats me! The curry was light and veggies were crisp - great flavor and veggie combo of carrots, green/red peppers, onions and a taste of sweetness with pineapple. Both my sister and I enjoyed our meal, filled our bellies but definitely no leftovers with the small portions. Service was quick and friendly. I'd return but maybe lunch would be the bigger bang for my buck?

Do NOT skip this place!! This has become my regular go-to Thai restaurant in Providence! The food is always hot, appropriate level of spice, and the service is always spectacular. Chalkstone has a hidden gem with this place, and I'm so glad I found it. First of off, the place is clean... the entire restaurant is spotless. Parking is available in the back, or near the street. It's very affordable, and the portion size for the price point is unmatched. I've heard a lot of people leave reviews about the safety of the area; and honestly, the neighborhood is fine overall. The food is five stars and authentic! I always try something different, but for starters, I would obviously recommend the Pad Thai, because they don't do it wrong. The PAD SEE UIW is my absolute favorite. It's delicious and the best I've ever had. Additionally; the wontons and the TOM KA GAI soup are spectacular. I'm telling you; that you won't be disappointed with this place.

At first glance, you don't see much from Elmwood Ave, but veer to the right and everything opens up on the left, with a parking lot in the back. Ornate statues lead you to the entrance, and once inside you are instantly greeted with bold colors and beautiful art everywhere. I wanted to take the opportunity to try some Cambodian food, so after some quick research, I opted for Beef Lok Lak, which happened to be one of the lunch combos. I chose fried rice and nime chow for my lunch options and settled back to wait for my feast. They bring you a complementary pot of hot tea, which I enjoyed. I believe it was a straightforward unsweetened black tea. Perfect for me. Before long the rangoons arrived. I literally said "wow" when the runner set my plate down. Beautiful golden brown, small bubbles visible all over the outside, promising crispy goodness. And it delivered. What I didn't expect what the slight chewiness to the wrapper that enhanced the experience. The filling was super creamy and delicious, but I prefer my rangoons with scallions as well. However, that didn't stop me from enjoying every bite. Then my lunch came. The beef was perfectly cooked, the dressing tangy and peppery. The nime chow was herby and super fresh as it should be. And the rice had this extra depth of flavor that made me think of tomato paste? A lovely addition the dish. I had a great meal here and the rangoons are definitely worth having! I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more of their menu!!

I got my 'usual' order from when it was the prior ownership/management and have to say I was less than impressed. I ordered spring rolls which have a large portion size (6 large rolls) which are much larger than the prior owners but the taste is just mainly of cabbage and oil. Not much flavor and they seemed to be a little dense/soggy with oil. The crab rangoons were made with imitation crab meat and had curry, not really any crab flavor. They seemed to use a thin premade wrapper. I also got pad thai which was okay. It was a bit on the mushy side. Flavor was okay but it just didn't seem to have the same fresh, clean quality as prior recipe. Tasted similar to a lot of other thai restaurants, which may not be a bad thing I guess. Finally I ordered drunken noodles for lunch the next day. These did not come spicy at all but instead came with a chili sauce on the side. The noodles themselves were really thick and gummy and bunched up (kind of a squareish size) rather than long ribbons. There was just almost no flavor to this dish and the flavor was just fish sauce or something similar. No complexity or layers of flavor. Very one dimensional. Overall, for the higher price it was relatively disappointing.

I always liked that this restaurant seems to be a small house converted into a restaurant since it literally makes me feel at [someone's] home. We were given QR codes to scan for the menu; not my favorite. I overheard another table ask for paper menus, so it appears there is that option. For a starter, we ordered handmade lamb dumplings and for entrees, original meefen and lamb on dry land with a side of white rice. It all ended up coming out around the same time and the tables are a little small so it felt like an overwhelming amount of food, but it was actually the perfect amount for two people. The lamb dumplings were flavorful, albeit, the wrappers were a tad too soft. The original meefen was very tasty, especially the minced meat. However, the uden noodles don't do a great job of absorbing sauces, so it felt like a lot of the oils and flavor were left behind. The lamb on dry land was good, but it was difficult to eat especially two people. We didn't realize it would be meat on a stick, similar to a turkey leg but less meaty. We ended up eating the easy parts, but took the bone home to finish out of the public eye. The crispy potatoes on top were my friend's favorite. The total was about $50 which was fair. Our waiter and other staff members did an excellent job of getting us all we needed and clearing plates as we finished.
