Server helped to guide us through the dishes to determine best choices. We started with Thai Star Chicken Wings that were extremely simple but truly great. Also had a Nime Chow-like rolls just called Spring rolls. I had Panang Beef suggested as house favorite by server with sticky rice. So fabu! HOT, though. If you do not like hot they can tone it down. By the middle of the dish I had to ask them to make it a little less hot. It was catching up to me. It was really, really good, though. Hubby had Thai Beef Steak that was very similar to Mongolian Beef. Excellent sauce. Also had House Special Fried Rice. One of the best you will EVER eat!!! That is hubby's go-to dish that he uses to measure Asian restaurants. This one was so good we considered ordering extra to take home. Really a fun little place. I've driven past this location many a time. Located on a weird corner next to a DD on Chalkstone headed towards Mt Pleasant, Thai Star had been on my radar for a time. I was impressed. The interior is cookie cutter low to mid grade Asian: raggedy pink table cloths over old tables with glass tops, bamboo, Buddha's, pics of Asian government officials spanning centuries. Service was quick and unassuming, and the waiter,although of obvious Thai descent, was as American as apple pie and spoke better English than I, making menu switch out a breeze. The food was very good. The pad thai was as good if not better than any i've found in Prov. The Hot Thai Basil was indeed hot, and the spring rolls were light and flavorfull, but a tad chewy. All of the flavors were on point, and Id go again. Unless you have the misfortune of living in this part of Prov, id probably grab to go. However, there is no corkage fee, so you could get mighty corked on some BYOBooze. I've been a regular at Thai Star for awhile now, and realized I should share the love! This is hands down my favorite Thai place in Rhode Island, possible New England (rivaling only Rod Dee in Boston). I find the other reviews here to be accurate, and agree that: 1) Don't let the location/store front fool you 2) Food and service are fantastic! 3) BYOB = Awesome! 4) Great lunch specials 5) Super affordable for both lunch and dinner I love the nime chow (usually order it without shrimp), the curries, crab rangoon, and chicken laap. The food is always fresh, and the servers are super friendly and attentive. Always ample seating, as it seems to be a bit more popular for take-out than dine-in. I can't believe that I never wrote a review for one of my favorite Thai restaurants! Now, I do work in the area so as a group we often get take out or eat here. That means I am a frequent (at least once a month) patron so I can speak to the fact this is a consistently GREAT place to go. First, location wise, it is tucked away on Chalkstone next to the Dunkin Donuts so you might miss it. Inside, though, it is very cozy and decorated pleasantly. Service, always nice, always helpful. We have never had an excessive wait nor been treated by any of the staff with anything but courtesy. This goes for dining in or take out, even at odd hours. Now, the important stuff, FOOD. We have had almost everything on the menu as a group. I love their Pad Thai though I am a sucker for fresh lime with it and you have to ask for that. I am also a big noodle fan so I've tried their spicy veggie noodles, drunken noodes, pad se euw, etc. ALL have been super SUPER fresh and perfectly seasoned so it is hard for me to make up my mind when I am in a noodle mood. Meat dishes the chili beef is good, as is the lemongrass chicken. Fish dishes are also given rave reviews by my colleagues, especially the scallops and tamarind fish. If you want heat, though, ask for it with caution. One time our much more chili pepper tolerant colleague ordered "super spicy" for us all and we could barely finish our meals the heat was so intense. Their usual "spicy" as the menu reads isn't overly intense. Prices. . . have always been reasonable for the amount of food we get. Thai Star is another RI favorite that has somehow eluded me for many years. Several friends have said this is their go to Thai spot for years and I finally made a stop during my last trip up to Providence. My friend and I started with the fresh spring rolls appetizer. This was a slightly different, yet delicious twist on what Rhode Islanders tend to call nim chow. The ingredients were very fresh and the dish was well presented - the twist came in the peanut dipping sauce. They weren't served with thick peanut sauce or the thin sweet sauce typical of most RI Thai restaurant offerings. The sauce was thin and clear and seemed to have a tart vinegar base instead of sugary sweetness. While it was a taste bud surprise, it was also a satisfying delicious twist that differentiates theirs from the other Thai spots. We also ordered pad thai with our spring rolls as an appetizer, because it's my opinion that pad thai is THE dish that sets the tone for a Thai restaurant and should always been one of your choices on a first ever visit. Once again - the pad thai was different than most typical offerings. It was very simple in terms of ingredients yet very flavorful, with noodles cooked to perfection...great start, two differentiated dishes that set them apart. I could not find my staple Thai dish on the menu, so I went with something I don't think I've ever tried - Panang beef, ordered very spicy. I was very satisfied with the bite -which offered excellent heat without overpowering the flavors. The vegetables were crisp and flavorful and the beef was tender and delicious. We finished up with an order of sweet banana sticky rice for dessert. I've never had this dish or any Thai dessert that I can think of, so while I cannot compare it to previous experiences, I did thoroughly enjoy it's mild sweet flavor and smooth texture. This is my favorite Thai place in Providence! The pad thai is amazing, somehow creamy and tangy and the noodles are always perfectly cooked. The crab rangoons are some of the best I've ever had. So creamy and bursting with crab flavor. Over the years I have tried several different curries and other dishes and everything has been fantastic. Even better than the food is the service. I believe this is a family owned restaurant and everyone is so above and beyond. They are very friendly and even recognized us after coming in just a few times. I will give you one big disclaimer. This is an authentic Thai restaurant, so when you ask for spicy, they don't mess around. I asked for 2 star spicy once and it was so hot that I couldn't eat it and had to order something else. And I'm no spice whimp. I've seen even some of the most heavy hitter spice kings fall at the mercy of the 4 or even 3 star spicy. Spicedevils beware. Other big perks to this hidden gem is that it is BYOB and although they do not list it on the website, they have delivered our food to us within a 2 mile radius. Thai Star is THE gold standard in Thai food as far as I am concerned. There are other Thai restaurants in the area where I'll eat, but Thai Star tops them all. I've never ordered a dish that was not delicious and the tofu is always perfectly cooked. Start your meal with curry puffs, tofu triangles or nime chow, then prepare to be overwhelmed by the menu. My hubby and I usually order two main dishes to share: the Masaman curry and something else. While everything is awesome, we just can't escape their version Masaman, a mild curry featuring cashews, potatoes, and carrots with your choice of meat or tofu. Also not to be missed: the green curry, Bangkok Tofu, and Thai Basil. We've ordered Masaman at Thai restaurants all over the country and nobody else's is as perfect. I only wish they had full bar. I enjoy a blue cocktail with my Thai food and Thai Star is strictly BYO--but I won't hold their liquor license against them. The food is worth it. read more

Based on review we went there had lunch couple days ago it was a disaster ! I couldn't understand how people still gave them 4 starts ? It is really tiny old restaurant when were there that was lunch time and only have one table that means we will get our food really fest , BUT NO ! After we order food it toke us 15 mins to have the appetizer, 40 mins main curse. I ordered crispy duck, it supposed to be a fresh duck leg or breast but they made with duck fat and duck pluck ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!! I couldn't describe how I felt right now. We order 2 app and 3 dish, Chicken wings hard like rock, fried rice sticky like made with glue, Full of junk we end up paying $95 plus tips! Never Ever going again !!!!!!!! Fantastic! I've lived in the area for years and never tried this place... because let's face it, it's nothing pretty from the outside. But this place is a GEM! We started going during lent because I needed some fish or tofu dishes. The Magic Tofu and Tofu Himmapha (sp?) are great! My girlfriend got the Chicken Lemongrass, which I had the leftovers the next day, and that too was delicious. For Appetizers, we got Crab Rangoon and Spring Rolls. While many people here rave about the Spring Rolls, we thought they fell a little short. The Crab Rangoon on the other hand was proabably some of the best we've ever had. Crispy and the cream cheese filling had big bits of veggies in there for a great texture. The service is great. We BYOB and are promptly given large glasses and a bottle opener. While the inside is nothing fancy, this place is a neighborhood gem. The service and the food has brought us back a handful of times now... and we plan to keep coming back for many years. read more

I absolutely love Thai Star. You wouldn't expect to find this gem in such a small storefront on Chalkstone Ave, but dear god its amazing. Everything I've tried on the menu has been fantastic. But I must rave about their crab rangoons. They're clearly house made, with a golden, crispy crust on the outside, and stuffed with a crazy amount of crab. Even better, they're accompanied with a house made sweet and sour sauce. If you feel a cold coming on...this is one of the best places to get a spicy, sinus-opening soup. The broths are all fabulous, and every soup is full of fresh ingredients that in no way make you feel like they were yesterday's leftovers. If you're watching your figure, try the Thai Salad. The house made dressing is tangy and delicious, and the salad itself is full of fresh Thai veggies. Other great options are the curries, the pad Thai, and the hot basil. I can't get enough. Not only is the food FANTASTIC, but the service is so warm and friendly that you want to hug them. Usually there's only one server around lunch time, but they NEVER fall behind. I love Thai Star! A lot of the Providence-area Thai restaurants deceptively offer few vegetarian options; many are unable or unwilling to make curries and their sauces vegetarian if requested, but not Thai Star! It's one of the few places in Providence where I can get vegetarian red curry, but they happily do it. I've had the tofu red curry 3 or 4 times now and every time I'm done I'm sad I don't have more. I also enjoy their coconut vegetable soup, though one time I wasn't positive if there was maybe chicken in the broth. Hopefully I was mistaken. I also love their Thai iced tea; it's particularly fragrant. Their pad see ew is yummy (though not my favorite compared to the red curry), and the vegetable fried rice is good. Also, I have found the portions to be better than other places nearby; why get Thai food if you don't get to eat leftovers? Their takeout is quick and the service is nice. I've been here once, pretty much middle of the road for what you can find around here. The food is very good, although the portion sizes were on the smaller size while the prices were a little on the high side (which unfortunately is status quo in RI, what is up w/ this town and the ridiculously high taxes on restaurants, does RI not want their small businesses to succeed or something?!). I'm writing this review after our most recent stop, dinner time on a Saturday. We originally intended to go to Los Andes, but that place is ridiculous with its wait times. As we walked into Thai Star, there were a few people picking up take-out orders. We were the only ones there for a while until a party of 12 showed up. Even though the kitchen must have gotten chaotic at that point, our service was still very good. We ordered the pad see uiw, the fancy chicken, the tofu himmapha, and a few appetizers. This restaurant was nearly empty when I visited, but was a great experience. The ginger tea was really lovely. The Tom Kha Gai was fantastic! The price point on the soup is unusual- $4 for small, $9 for medium, $11 for large. Then again, I haven't seen the different sizes. I had the duck lunch special. Portion size was substantial. Not the best duck I have ever had, but still very delicious. The fried ice cream had my favorite type of coating, but was a little TOO hard in the middle. All in all, I will be returning! read more

By far one of the best Thai food places around. Americanized but good. The Nim Chow is very good, and larger size. Portions are good. Tom Kha Gai and the Tom Yum Goong, Yum Neaua (beef salad) are all pretty good. Chicken laab if you dont cook Thai you will like it, i happen to cook a lot of Thai and find it average. The first time I actually heard about this restaurant was through my cousin, who had recommended their fried ice cream to me. Their fried ice cream is by far one of the best and freshest I've had in the area, w/ plenty of fruits you never end up feeling guilty you ordered this dessert! The second time around I dropped by and ordered one of their beef specialties, which might have been their honey beef though I'm not entirely sure. It was pretty decent stir-fry, nothing out of the ordinary-- a plus for it being not greasy at all (which is hard to find in many Asian places from my honest opinion.) For drinks I would definitely recommend their White Rose, which is a non-alcoholic creamy pineapple/coconut beverage. It has a pleasant indescribable taste I like to say has as a nice cool sweetness to it but an acidic kick from the pineapples. What brought me to this place the third time around was due to two factors: Hunger & Convenience. I was craving Asian cuisine, though my bf and I didn't want to drive anywhere too far considering Mother Nature decided it was time for snow in Lil' Rhody. Opting against Chinese takeout, Thai Star was the only thing close enough to home-cooked Asian food from where we were. I ordered the Two Lovers which consisted of chicken and shrimp and of a bunch of vegetables such as baby corn, onions, carrots, chef's special sauce which was a nice light mixture of oyster and garlic. The bf ordered a beef specialty dish that had a delicious curry sauce reminiscent of what my mother and father use to make. The curry sauce I would personally describe as a nice yellow curry that tasted like a wonderful blend of tumeric and lemongrass. Next time I will have to try their duck from good things I heard about it, and their nime chow (springrolls) because it seems to be a hit for Yelp reviewers! "Woohoo Thai Star for Everyone" is a joke I normally leave on my friend's wall when he creates a Facebook event - yes, completely unrelated but there is a reason: several of these friends all have fond memories of me convincing them to try Thai Star during undergrad. Despite some skepticism, they all loved it and crave it as much as I do. Anyways, Thai Star really is a hidden gem. It is small and looks like a place you might drive by and think "I would never eat there." The people who work here are friendly and awesome. Food comes out quick and is always hot. That said, while my roommates would get thai basil or a chicken dish, I can only comment on one- the beef pad thai, aka the most amazing dish I have ever had there (and subsequently would order on a consistent basis every other weekend during the semester). The beef pad thai comes in a huge portion. It is nice and salty, with crisp sprouts, plenty of beef (decent beef too, not the kind of meat you would question if it was squirrel or something), peanuts, leek or scallion...the usual. It is a portion where you could have a bit left over...but it's so good, your brain and stomach just tell you to finish it off instead...leaving you satisfied, yet stuffed. To those who might fear going off the beaten path, in 20+ meals here, none of us ever got a stomach ache or had any complaints. Give it a try! read more

One of the sad things as one of the reviewers have mentioned is the price, especially in this recession. Everything I have tried here has been just wonderful. If your taste runs to the full americanization of Chinese food in an ornate surrounding you may want to pass. On the other hand, If you're looking for authentic Thai cuisine, the real thing, in a modest setting don't miss the Thai Star. This is excellent Thai food properly prepared with freshly chopped vegetables and seafood served in authentic Thai sauces. I'm always a little iffy when getting thai food because it is either really good, or really bad. This was one of those really good ones. My girlfriend, my upstairs roommate, and I all ordered from here because it is walking distance from our house. The lady over the phone was super nice and took our orders. We walked down to the restaurant and I was a little taken back by how cozy it was inside. We didn't eat there but we may go back and sit down because for such a small place they do their best to make it look upscale. It was a little creepy that they knew that we wanted the bill split already when they got there! They even had it ready for us on two different bills with the right food on each bill! No clue how they knew... A+ for that. Like most Asian food places the portions were massive. I will easily be eating lunch from here for at least two days. The food was tasty, not four star worthy but better than two. I would honestly give it a three and a half but that's not an option. I ordered the hottest thing on the menu and asked them to make my mouth burn, make it as hot as possible. When I was eating it, it was spicy, but not extremely spicy. For the spiciest thing they have I was quite disappointed. For the amount you pay you get your monies worth, this is more of a last minute "I want thai food but don't want to go out" place. Even though we moved from there many years ago, we still go there often. Absolutely fantastic food. Yup, the place is small. Just know that going in and you'll be fine. Looking for an inexpensive dinner around the area in Providence, I thought I would check out the local Thai Star Restaurant with 4 stars in Yelp reviews. I went there at around 8 PM on a Saturday, June 20, 2015, alone, and entered to find only one table occupied. The Thai lady who seems to be running the place greeted me, asked me whether I was going to eat in or take out, and sat me down. We didn't interact much, and she was mostly in the kitchen checking on the cooking (or so I assume). She asked me if I liked the food once during my meal. I ordered a small cup of tom yum soup (clear). I wondered why there weren't more herbs in it. It tasted like it was brought from a heated batch. It was alright. I ordered a large plate of stir-fried basil minced chicken. It didn't look anything special, and perhaps the lighting was just too dark. Anyways, in my personal opinion, Thai food is not really about presentation. If it tastes good, then it's good. The dish was, in my opinion, too salty from the soy sauce (a little too much of the oyster sauce? soy sauce?) and not enough basil leaves. What really irked me was how the dish lacked basil leaves. I counted about 3 leaves. I remember from my time in Bangkok that you throw almost a handful of thai holy basil leaves in a serving... (I was more than a little disappointed.) Oh, well. I would only come back here if I was looking for a quick Thai fix. The portions were nice, though. I ate the leftovers of my dish for breakfast. In fact, I would come back to try their curry dishes; however, I have to admit--this restaurant isn't exactly cheap. Expect to dish out $13-15 per entree and $4-7 per appetizer. Been here at least twice since my first visit and tried several new dishes, including the Spicy Chaokoh Chicken (stir-fried minced chicken dish) and the Pad Kaw Neur (stir-fried marinated beef dish), both of which were outstanding. The Fresh Spring Rolls continue to be my appetizer of choice and the best that I've had in this area.
