I have an unhealthy relationship with this place. Despite its flaws, I continue to eat here regularly. It must be the food. I often have the spicy basil beef with eggplant. The eggplant is breaded and shallow fried. I am not used to eating eggplant this way but it is good. I usually request extra spicy to give it a kick. Customer service is horrible. There are days when I wonder why I come here. The waitstaff has attitude and can be very dismissive. I love the trendy look. It is so much nicer looking than its neighbor Thai restaurants. Sometimes, when I'm feeling emo, I order a bunch of satay and egg rolls and pick them up, wearing pajamas and scowling at everyone. And, yet, no one there every made me feel bad for it. I had lunch here with co-workers and it as pretty good. We parked up the street at the corner where there's a little open parking lot and walked to the restaurant. Upon entering, you'll think you're at a fancy restaurant. The decor is modern and chic. My party of 6 was sat right away on a Thursday around noon. The lunch menu did not include a lot of variety. I suggest perhaps adding some noodle option in the lunch menu! I ordered the red dragon noodles which at other restaurants, is drunken noodles (Basically spicy pad see ew). Our orders came out pretty quick and we were in and out of the restaurant in an hour. Why. Why? WHY! Why couldn't your food taste good? I really wanted your top recommended item to taste good. Red Devil Dragon is a wonderful concept, but it's just over cooked sauteed flat noodles in brown sauce (soy sauce, sugar, ginger, etc.) with couple of strands of bell pepper that tasted like it was sitting out too long. I swear they have a buffet of food there waiting for it to be served because our came out medium cold. The chicken. THE CHICKEN. It was dry, over cooked, chewy, and flaky at the same time. Both in the Red Devil Dragon and Yellow Curry. Why do your servers have to be rude? I asked for the Yellow Curry dish on the lunch menu, and the server looked at me square in the face and said, "It's not an lunch item." I said, "I must have mistaken, but I saw it on then menu. We can just have the regular Yellow Curry". Btw, their Yellow Curry made my stomach hurt...too much MSG and butter does that to me. Why did you have to lie to me? I went there with a restaurant.com coupon and they thought I wasn't paying attention and charged me $4.99 for 2 lunch dishes that turned out to be $13.49 after the discount, and $23.49 before: 1) I know you know I have a calculator, why would you try to tell me that my 18% gratuity was $4.99...was I buying take-out? 2) How could the tax on my total meal be the same at $20 be the same at $10? 3) Rolling your eyes when I pulled out my credit card doesn't make me want to come back. People who gave one or two stars for this place need to get their head checked. Seriously, I'm worried about them... The food is amazing. If you like curry then try the red with pineapple. It comes with the duck - and even though I like the taste of duck I am not very fond of having to cut all the fat skin off the meet. However, I do it because I am in love with the sauce. My other favorite is the cashew chicken. Delicious! And absolutely worth every penny. To the people who complain about the price, which I actually believe is more than fair: If you can't afford 10-14 dollars for a meal WHY WOULD YOU GO EAT OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE?! Drive on just a bit further, cross Manchester Ave., and go to Ralph's (hey, I gave them a review on Yelp as well, btw.) . Buy some top ramen or whatever... I am not giving 5 stars because the service can be slow and not very friendly. It must suck to work at a place that's not very busy and thus you probably don't make a lot of tips, but don't let me guess that with your bad attitude. I am always friendly and tip well, unless I'm really pissed. So watch out for me next time I'm there. :) My compliments to the chef and kitchen personnel! A solid four stars. This is not traditional Thai food - very much Americanized/Fusion, but good nonetheless. The style/appearance is clearly a primary player, but not to the detriment of the food. We stopped by Saturday night at about 9PM and the place was pretty quiet. It looked like there were about four parties finishing up dinner and two guys at the bar. While we were eating, we saw quite a few takeout/delivery orders going out the door. TT is open until 10:30 on Friday and Saturday. My wife had a Thai/Lychee martini and I had a draft Kirin Ichiban. She liked he drink; I found it to be really, really sweet. We ordered the Scallops Lemongrass appetizer but they were out, so we had the Fresh Summer Roll, an uncooked rice paper roll with veggies, tiny rice noodles, and shrimp. The roll was served sushi style, with a peanut/chili oil-based dipping sauce. A little heavier/oilier than I'd like but very nice. For entrees, we ordered the Hot and Spicy Eggplant with pork and Red Devil Noodles with beef. The noodles were nice. Not as saucy or greasy as I expected but still a little on the oily side. Nice veggies and herbs, particularly the sweet onions and cherry tomatoes. The beef was very light, and a little overcooked. Definitely the weak point of the dish. The eggplant was great. It was pan-fried with three colors of peppers and onions. Like the noodle dish, the pork was light on portion and the weakest part of the dish, but better than the beef. The slightly crispy, sweet eggplant was killer. Just a tough oilier than I like, but that's how you get that kind of crispy without breading or deep frying, I suppose. At $10 each, the entrees (including curries, noodles, rice dishes, and semi-traditional Thai dishes, etc.) were good value. Not huge portions, but certainly enough for one per person. The soups were $6-8 per bowl and the appetizers and salads were $8 to 12 - not as great. Chef specials were priceless but more adventurous. For dessert, we had the Mango/Sticky Rice, and this was the highlight. I'm not sure I can do this justice but suffice to say that it's worth it. Great balance of sweet, salty, chewy, sticky, multiple textures and temperatures, nice presentation, and flanked with fresh mango, blueberries, and garnished with mint and a syruped strawberry. My recommendations: skip the apps and soups, and just order off the $10 entree sections of the menu. They don't appear to be great with meat, so I'd probably order vegetarian-style next time. I would get that eggplant again and I can't say enough about the mango sticky rice. You won't disappoint, even for lunch by yourself, or for a date dinner. Once a campus cheap Thai restaurant is reborn into a business & hip restaurant with good modern decor, better alcohol selections, and good solid Thai food -- at a slightly higher price. Set lunch is $8 - 11 , Main dinner dish is 10 - 20. They have dishes such as Chilean Seabass with Japanese green noodle and steamed ginger sauce, or Lamb Chop with spicy Thai herbal sauce - a kind of menu item I only find in Bangkok, Hong Kong or Asia de Cuba. I only had Yellow Curry Noodle for lunch - $8 - and it was very good. It's on the sweet side but tasty and complete, also spicy in an authentic way, not like some cheap Thai places on Lincoln that dumps sugar for the sake of making it sweet. It filled me up completely. Apparently this place just recently re-opened under new ownership. I had never been under the previous ownership, but let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised by all aspects of the dining experience. 3 of us went on a Monday night. The place wasn't too busy, but apparently they draw a rather large crowd for lunch and fri-sun dinner. The ambience/decor is contemporary and inviting. They were definitely going for a melding of high-class vibe with a casual feel. And they succeeded. The service was quick and attentive. The prices are comparable to what you'd see with one of those thai places that stick menus in your car door. Everything was reasonably priced, if not down right cheap. And we're talking high quality dishes here. We had the dancing shrimp and dumpling appetizers. Fantastic! With great presentation. The Tom Yum soup was some of the best I've ever tested, with equally unique presentation. The seafood pad thai was amazing. I had a fear that the dish would be pad thai with a few shrimp on top. not even close. I couldn't even see the noodles underneath with all of the clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp, and scallops covering it. This was arguably one of the best thai dishes I've ever had. for dessert, sweet sticky rice with thai custard. phenomenal. and again, the presentation was what I would expect from a high class restaurant where i'd be paying 4 times as much. Please get over to this place and keep them in business! We frequent the hand full of restaurants that surround the intersection of manchester & lincoln (alejo's, kan pai, thompkins, little italy, etc) and this place has definitely moved to the top of the list. Visited Thai Talay on a Monday night with some friends before they went to the airport. A very quiet evening in the restaurant, with nice décor and they even had the football game on over the bar. Plus for that. Pros: 1) décor. 2) The food was very delicious. I ordered the spicy bamboo with chicken. My friends ordered calamari, cashew chicken, sake, seafood pad thai, spicy basil chicken, and fried rice. We all really enjoyed our food. Cons: 1) the food seemed to take forever to come out, and there was barely anyone else in the restaurant. 2) the dishes don't come with rice (I think it's a $1 more - not a lot of money but that's a staple with an entrée at an Asian restaurant). I've had my share of Thai food, and this place was mediocre, especially for the price. The chicken satay was okay, the Thai fried rice was bland, BUT the pad see you was actually good. Again, though, considering portion and price, I've had better quality and quantity for less. On top of that, the service was not good. The waitress we started out with seemed annoyed, and never came by our table. I get it-its Friday night, and busy, but at least try not to act like we're an inconvenience. Went here for the first time 7/5/10 with my BF and had the following: Crying Tiger - The beef is sooooooooooo tender and good with a nice spice to it. Pineapple Fried Rice - LOVED it! I've eaten here a few times and would rate it three stars for very low average food. However, the rating has come down because of my most recent experience in which I placed an order for delivery using a Valupak coupon. The coupon offered 10% off cash orders for delivery only. This was the ONLY reason I ordered from them---convenience and discount. I used the restaurant's online order form, where I clearly filled out my address and other pertinent details, such paying with cash and using the Valupak coupon. Over an hour after placing the order, the driver called telling me he was on the wrong street. The person giving him the address told him a completely different street. So by the time the delivery arrived, the food was lukewarm at best. But the real breaking point was when he would not accept the coupon because the restaurant did not include the discount at the time of the order. He told us to use it next time. Well, dear Thai Talay, there will be no "next time" for us. The quality of the food and your substandard service have pushed you into the category of restaurants that I will no longer give my business, especially considering the other excellent Thai restaurants in the vicinity. read more

The food is great. Very flavourful. I havent had any upscale Thai before, and this place really hit that spot. Interior decor is really cool! The food is very delicious. We ordered the sampler (appertizer) [$12], wonton soup[$8?], garlic green beans[$10], and the Bangkok BBQ chicken[$10]. I also had a Chang beer, and that was perfect for the entire meal. All very sweet, and just the right amount of sweet! I recommend! Though, I understand people say its a bit expensive. But, I think it is worth it for the no hassle parking in back, nice interior, great service, and unique flavors. You can find other Thai places in LA easily, but if you want that extra bit of "special date" appeal...then this place would be a must. The service was great. First off these people have serious attitude. I live in the area and order from them often because they deliver. With each order however I have noticed their service worsening. The last order I attempted to place has decided to make me quit ordering from them all together. I ordered pad thai and yellow curry which should have cost somewhat over $20. I was very confused when I was told the cost was $30. I agreed but then cancelled the order after the woman input my cc card number incorrectly 5 times. Since Ms. W wanted something healthy, the closest restaurant was this place. the place looked extremely modern, so i made the stereotype that it wasn't going to be good. And I was right. My papaya salad was not fresh at all. The table had all these condiments peppers, sauces, powders, and Ms. W decided it was okay to pour spoonfuls of this red powder all over her dish. Every day over the past year+ that I've been in LA, I would drive by this mysterious storefront that was under construction. I admired the teak slats that adorned the facade, the dark woods you could see through the windows, and wondered what and when, the new space would open. A week ago, I noticed the lights on, and the sign, "Thai Talay" illuminating on my drive home. No naturally, when Des arrived in LA on the 9 o'clock Amtrak, we thought we'd give it a try. They did not disappoint. 1st, the Sonoma Coast Sebastiani Pinot Noir was excellent. Aerate nicely, it had a spicy intro, only to smooth out at the end. Went well with dinner. We started with the sampler = Satay Skewers, coconut shrimp, spring rolls, dumplings, and a cucumber salad. Very Delish! It came with a mix of exotic sauces that went well with just about everything on the plate. Our entrees were the Topaz and Asparagus. Both were absolutely wonder full. The Topaz was an unusually light Yellow Curry, Asparagus was a flash fried dish with shrimp and shitake mushrooms. Amazing. If you're in the hood, Thai Talay won't disappoint! read more

I really enjoyed Thai Talay and can't wait to eat here again. First--excellent service. Our waitress made several spot-on recommendations and was really friendly. Second--the food. Excellent variety of dishes. We had the firefly calamari (with sweet and sour dipping sauce), the Emerald Curry and the Orange Chicken (which are lightly-glazed chicken balls with rice). Excellent flavor and everything was light--not overly fried or oily. Their menu is more "fusion" than traditional, but I was surprised to find many traditional dishes with good-sized portions. Maybe the best Tom Kha Soup I've had in a long time. Incredibly rich, but not too heavy. Third--laid-back lounge feel. The decor is very modern, but still comfortable. Great place to take a date, get some drinks, or have a business meeting/dinner. The only thing that detracted from our meal was a loud/drunk guy at the bar who made it difficult to have a conversation for a bit; however, I have a feeling that's the exception and not the rule. As others have mentioned, there's parking in the back alley or on the street or in the side lot and it's not incredibly busy around lunchtime. I found the prices to be reasonable for dinner--$15 or under per person, unless you're going to rack up the cocktails or appetizers. Thai Talay also delivers and they have an easy-to-use online ordering system from their website. The food here is INCREDIBLE. Thai food always seemed bland to me, but this restaurant changed my mind. My friends and I ordered the Pad Thai, beef green curry, and the fried chicken dish. I usually hate Pad Thai but their chicken Pad Thai was seasoned so well and it was so flavorful. The green curry had a nice spicy kick to it. The fried chicken dish was dry and overcooked, but the other two dishes made up for it. The atmosphere is very modern and classy with flowers and interesting lighting, which really contrasts with the typical Thai restaurant. The place doesn't look cheap but the prices are very reasonable with the average dish being around $10 and the portions were good. I knocked off one star because of our surly, extremely rude, slow waitress. I don't expect waitresses to be plaster on fake smiles 24-7 while pretending that they live to serve hot plates. And I especially don't expect this at an Asian restaurant, but our waitress wasn't even trying! My friend had a Groupon coupon and we presented it to the waitress when she brought our bill and she acted like we burned her house down. "No you can't use that! This doesn't apply to drinks! See, this is why you have to give me the coupon at the beginning of the meal or else it will mess everything up." How dare we ask a waitress to recalculate a bill on a slow Sunday night? If you're looking for good Thai food then come to Thai Talay. I had: Wonton Soup with shrimp -- literally one shrimp. And it was chewy, which means overcooked, or had been sitting around cooked and cold, and just dumped in. Broth was too salty. Papaya Salad - not bad, a little heavy on the vinegar. Spice level I asked for was medium, it was bordering hot but that's usually typical with Thai spice levels. Ok. Broccoli with Oyster sauce with Beef -- broccoli was cut in uneven pieces, and broccoli was basically raw, just warmed through. I like broccoli al dente, but this was pretty tough. Meat was a little on the tough side as well, cut thin, and sparse. Sauce was watery. Had to order a side of steamed rice for extra. One small bowl for $1.50 The bill came to $30. Thirty dollars. Thirty clams. I should have gone to a hole in the wall thai place for a lunch special, anywhere else I could have spend less than half that. For better food. Won't be back. read more

We came here before the dinner crowd. The staff was super friendly. My friend and her parents come here often and they LOVE them, so they were really nice to us. Ordered: Duck Curry- The only thing that stopped me from loving this was the duck meat that they used. I kept getting bone and really fatty pieces. It's a good price, but I would have paid more for some breast meat. (yes, this is me being a picky American) Red Devil Noodles w/ Shrimp- Solid, but not super impressive. Surf & Turf Fried Rice- The saving grace of the night. The filet mignon and shrimp were both excellently flavored. I would order this if I come back.
