Recommended by my coworker who said this "is the BEST thai place ever"... but obviously with 1,900+ reviews, this place must be a big deal right? First impression from yelp pictures.. WHY ARE THE PORTIONS SO SMALL?? (I legit can eat alot) Tonight.. thursday night. Up in the U-district (which I never come up here btw) - - a crap load of people waiting outside. If you tried to go in, they will ask you to stay outside and they will come assist you. That is how TINY this place is! I peeked inside and it looks like everyone is sitting at a bar/diner type setting (next to each other on individual stools). It seemed like alot of people ordered take out so that's why there was a crowd forming. Luckily we got seated in about 15 min at an itty bitty table with wooden stools at the back wall, for 3 people (and facing each other thank god lol). Food: Chicken phad thai - too crispy. I felt like it was burnt and crispy as opposed to my soft noodles I'm used to. My coworker explained "that's how they make it, they don't boil the noodle like other thai places do". Ohhh.. I guess I don't like change lol - phad see eww chicken 2*. Delicious but a little spicy! *where's my water at?* - panang curry - very good. No complaints - chicken basil - not bad! Not my favorite but not the worse. Also was spicy at 2* lol - rice is on the side to make the entree look like it's more but it's still less portion to me. I want more of my entree, dang it! Ambience: - blasting loud r&b and hip hop.. maaaaaybe just turn it down a notch? I couldn't hear myself talk lol. Music seems to attract the college crowd but hearing it from outside, seems like I'm walking into a club. - AC must be broken?? I was sweating bullets with the 80+ temp outside & eating my spicy food. Legit felt muggy lol - workers seem to be busting their ass nonstop with how busy it is. Feels like a hectic environment. Overall, would I come back? Maybe. Maybe not. It's an eat & go/get rushed type of environment which is not my thing. Food is good but possibly not worth all the trouble of waiting & feeling cramped in this kind of establishment. I like to feel relaxed when I'm enjoying my meal. Btw.. CASH ONLY. You'll love it - a great little hole in the wall. Great flavor, quick service , interesting, always busy. And remember, they're charging little more than McDonalds for a meal, and you get all that flavor - and waitress service. Keep that in mind when you read the negative reviews here. This place used to be so food but has dramatically failed in the last two years. I have gone back periodically hoping the Thai Tim of old would resurface but this place has changed for the worse. Each of the 5 dishes we ordered today were over spiced and overcooked. The spicy noodle was so overcooked it was not edible. We have always gotten a 3 spice but lately it has been too much and so salty. The swimming Rama was ok but not nearly as good as in the past and not enough spinach Something has definitely changed. Wow. This has easily become one of my favorite thai restaurants in Seattle. With an open view of the kitchen, you can watch the chef crank out dishes after dishes. Sitting there waiting for my food, I was mesmerized by the speed and efficiency of the kitchen staff. As a previous yelper mentioned, it was as if they were dancing in the kitchen. Being quite the pad thai connoisseur, I have been looking for a restaurant that serves up this popular thai dish with authentic flavors. The noodles were cooked perfectly with a nice chewy texture to it. Solid food, really... and it's one of the better tasting Thai places in University District, so it bums me to report that we saw a bug prancing around the table top near the chef's open kitchen. Service is also on the bad side (I'll excuse it though because it's an asian hole in the wall). Also be mindful of their spice scale! 5 on the spice scale is "burn your stomach lining" kind of spicy and it left my stomach warm for the rest of the day. Love the crunchy char on the noodle that comes from the super hot wok and al dente preparation. I used to love sitting inside at the counter. One is no more than 3 ft from the fire, and it's amazing to watch and smell aromas as the chef prepares the food. The flavors have so much depth and the perfect balance between sweet, savory, and spicy which is KEY for any authentic southeast Asian cuisine! Spicy level #3 was perfect for our taste but the again, we can handle the heat. Level 3 gives you that kick but and slight burn in your tummy but still allows you to enjoy the meal without sweating! It's very sad the food quality went down tremendously. I am not sure if it's because there is a new chef during Covid-19. This was one of our favorite places and we were so looking for the meal. Their style of pad Thai was also my favorite. The pad Thai we ordered today is bland as you can see how white the noodle is. If you have eaten here before, you know it is not what it usually looks like. There's not much flavor at all and the level 2 spiciness did nothing to me this time. This place is well known by anyone in u district. Super fast service, they get your food out to you in maybe 10 minutes if they're taking their time. Servers are very polite and quick. As for food, I listened to the yelpers before me and went with the Panang Curry. It was one of the best I've had. I was practically licking up the sauce when I was finished with the meal. Friend also got a popular item, the Swimming Rama, and cleared her plate accordingly. Overall we were both thrilled with the food. I will attempt to branch out and order some of the lesser known items in the visits to come. But the food was so good, somehow you don't care (or I didn't anyway). We were a party of 4 so I imagine our hour long wait at 1230 on a Sunday isn't the norm, but honestly, even if it is, I'd do it all again. I'm used to seeking out the wok/charred smell of Thai/Asian food cooked in high heat("wok hey" if you know the reference) and this place does satisfy it !
