We started with the fried calamari, which was really crispy on the outside and wasn't too salty. It had the perfect balance of flavor with the sauce it came with, and I really enjoyed it. We also got the chicken skewers, which came with peanut sauce and another sweet sauce. Those were solid as well. For my main, I got the Drunken Noodles. What stood out to me was how much the sauces elevated the experience, especially with the appetizer sampler. Between the flaky curry puffs, flavorful noodles, crispy duck, and refreshing cocktails, there were plenty of strong moments throughout the meal. I'd come with someone, order a spread for the table, and let everybody find their favorite. My Tipsy Tayke: The Lychee Mojito was refreshing, minty, and actually delivered on the lychee flavor. Sweet enough to be enjoyable without taking away from how refreshing a mojito should be. My Taysty Tayke: Get Down & Dirty, Expeditiously: Drunken Noodles with Beef One of my favorites of the night. The noodles were packed with flavor, and the beef was tender enough to make the whole dish come together. Standout: Crispy Duck Crispy, tender, and flavorful. I really enjoyed it with the rice and its slightly nutty topping, but my cheat code was dipping the duck into some of the leftover sauces from the appetizer sampler. Sleeper Pick: Curry Puffs Soft, slightly sweet, flaky, and buttery. These disappeared quickly. The Appetizer Sampler is a great way to start because you get a variety of bites and sauces. The shumai was packed with flavor, while the chicken satay was much better once paired with the ginger sauce. The wrapped shrimp had a lighter, brighter flavor that almost felt refreshing compared to some of the heavier dishes. Desserts: The Mango Sticky Rice was probably the weakest part of the meal for me. The sticky rice had the right texture but needed more flavor. The Brownie & Ice Cream delivered on chocolate flavor, although I would've preferred a softer, less floury brownie. Service: Welcoming and attentive throughout the meal. Great little Thai place in Manhattan. Restaurant is dark and intimate with just a few tables. Very interesting wall art. Service was quick and friendly. Menu was extensive. They even have poh tak soup. I only know of 1 other restaurant that serves poh tak soup!! I didn't order this though as it would've been too large of a portion for just me. We came to Thai72 on Sunday evening for dinner. Found street parking right across the store, lucky!! We entered the restaurant within couple of minutes of opening, and I was surprised to see they were fully prepared. The interior of the restaurant was gorgeous, modern rustic look with brick walls all around. I started with the Seafood Tom Yum soup that was excellent. Had the spice and plenty of zest of the citrus. We got the roti canai as well that came with soft roti, but the chicken and the curry tasted average to me. For entree I ordered the Kao-obb Bkk, a unique rice dish with deep fried chicken, shrimp, scallops and sausage. I had mixed feeling about the dish. I liked the sauce, shrimp and scallop but the chicken seemed too chewy. The staff were super friendly. They stopped by the table every few minutes. We tried Thai72 for the first time this week and had a nice meal. They had a cozy atmosphere, with Christmas decor all around. My boyfriend ordered the one of the curries ($18+ for Tofu or Vegetables) and I had the Healthy Soup ($10+ for Small) + Roti Canal ($16+). The Roti Canal felt a bit pricey considering the size / amount, but I loved it and would order it again. The Healthy Soup was also exactly what I wanted, although it too, was a bit pricey for what it was. They could make the small one a bit smaller and less pricey. (The large is $15+) The service was fine and it was a decent meal overall. I'm happy to add Thai72 to my restaurant repertoire in UWS. read more

The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the ambience-- something about it felt sterile and made it feel uncomfortable. Can't put my finger on it, just didn't care for it. Ambiance (5/5) - The inside has a lovely décor and it is not too loud inside. Service (4/5) - We were attended to throughout the service. We had no issues with timing of our ordering and dishes. A little difficult getting our checks to pay/leave. Thai Crepe (5/5) - The exterior reminds of a steamed rice roll. After some wresting to pick up (and if not punctured in the attempt), the inside has loose meat filling. It tastes delicious on its own with good flavor and mix of textures. Braised Pork (3/5) - The presentation was gorgeous. The meat however fell flat because it was almost too dry despite the lovely marinated flavors. The dish needed like double the sauce as the curry was only enough to complement a few bites. Drunken Noodles (4/5) - Can't go wrong with the drunken noodles. Several year ago I visited Thai 72 shortly after it opened and the food and service were very good. Since then, it has gone downhill. I visited it again on January 3 and was disappointed. It was a time when they were changing shifts, and the employees just wanted to serve you and get out of there. I ordered a lychee martini (I've had better), five-star dumplings (good) and moo ping (bbq pork on a skewer) - awful. To her credit, the waitress noticed that I didn't eat much of the pork and took it off the check, but the experience left a lot to be desired. Such a lovely interior with a calm oasis atmosphere. There is dim lighting, bar towards the front, plenty of space inside, brick wall, and a cool wheel with pretty lights and lanterns in the back. I ordered the Kao-Obb BKK, or special Thai fried rice with deep fried shrimps, chicken, scallops & Thai sausages. This came in a clay pot, and looked quite impressive with all the meats. It was chicken heavy, with a decent amount of sausages, a few shrimp, and little bit of scallops. My favorite meats were the sausage and shrimp. They were wonderfully tender, succulent, and well seasoned. The rice was cooked just right, but was on the sweet side which I wasn't used to. Overall, a solid dish though. For dessert, I had to get the Mango Sticky Rice, however had I known it would cost $14, I might have restrained myself. That's almost the cost of some of the entrees! I did enjoy it and it was unique, as it was served with sticky purple coconut rice. The rice was the perfect sticky consistency, and the coconut taste shone through. The mango was fresh, soft, and there was sweet condensed milk drizzled on top, which elevated the flavors. Service was solid. We were well taken care of throughout our meal. Pricing is reasonable with most entrees costing between $15-20, but the Signature Dishes are a little higher. Beat Thai food I've had in NYC so far. I got two appetizers, the roti with the side of Massaman curry, and the fried spring rolls. The roti was gorgeously flakey and perfectly fried, and the Massaman tasted like someone's experienced grandma whipped it up. Just... amazing. Not as thick as some restaurants make it, which I actually liked, and the chicken was tender instead of the tough, pan fried chicken that gets served with curries like this too often. I have frequented this place for over 15 years. Service has been gracious; food, delicious; ambience, pleasant; and prices, reasonable. The food remains good although all the prices have climbed significantly (as they have almost everywhere.) But I was irritated by the manner in which a gratuity policy was implemented. Others may not be irritated so I simply describe it here for your information: Recently I dined there with four others and, when the bill was presented, it included the gratuity. I asked to see the menu to know that that policy was written there - since it was neither prominent nor announced by the wait staff. The menu was grudgingly presented. I found a notice in grey type on the last page stating that parties of 5 or more will have a gratuity of 18% added to their bill. This is not an uncommon policy in NYC although it is usually prominently displayed and customarily noted to diners by staff. Further, the tip added was in fact 20%, $4 more than the 18% would justify. More annoying was that, on the credit card slip, were a series of check boxes so that one might increase the tip by another 20%, 22% or 25%. In the context, the diner may well not likely be aware that a "market" rate tip had already been added to the bill. The lack of transparency and the over-charge on the included gratuity seemed a bit shady. I did not appreciate it. read more

I knew when I was seated I should have gotten up and left! The hostess sat me up front near the door where a few tables are located. For some reason I was the only person upfront while LITERALLY every other table was sat in the back where's it's nicer and warmer. I ordered the spring rolls for an appetizer which were good.
