It was a hot, humid day at the Maunakea Marketplace, and the heat must've played with my head because I showed off my ignorance yet again. Despite knowing otherwise, I was insisting ube and taro were the same thing. I mean they're both purple, right? I asked for an ube smoothie but was told they didn't serve it. When I pointed to the menu photo, I was determined to prove they have it. I was then schooled that they are two different fruits. We were walking around Chinatown getting ready to enjoy our dim sum haul from sing cheong yuan when I came upon this little smoothie shop. I was feeling a drink seeing all the fresh fruit stands that also made drinks and decided on Thanh. They are a cash only institute but luckily there's an atm around the corner from the smoothie shop, most smoothies were 7.50 with boba but I decided to skip the pearls so I could enjoy more lychee mango smoothie! Drinks are made to order and surprisingly they use fresh fruit for every smoothie (I think there's one smoothie that's not fresh fruit but they tell you if it's not). The fruit is very fresh and sweet and this might be the first time I got a lychee smoothie that used real lychee! Usually it's an artificial lychee flavor and I had it mixed with mango as well. Smoothies here are 95% ice and 5% fruit. I go to fresh fruit boba places regularly and Thanh is the skimpiest on the fruit by far. They only add enough fruit for color. All of the sweetness and taste comes from the added sugar. And as others have mentioned, their boba balls are not good, whereas other places' boba has its own taste and bouncier texture. read more

I would give negative stars for customer service. Just awful! Went to order and both man and woman have their backs turned seemingly watching TV. I had to call out and the man just turned and looked at me like I was bothering him. Hindsight, I should have gone next door to Mickey Cafe. Ordered my drink and while getting my money out I knocked over the spoon that was in the tin cup holding murky water ( I think that's what it was). It splashed all over my clothes and shoes. The guy turns and says he'll " wipe it up" later. Not caring if I was okay or needed a napkin. I had to ASK for a napkin and he gave me ONE. Meanwhile, the woman starts making what I thought was my drink but it turned out to be for the folks that were sitting down behind me. WTH! She started making theirs AFTER I ordered. While waiting for my drink another lady came to the counter and the guy tells her the counter is wet (why not wipe it up?). Then he fills the cup with the spoon with water AGAIN and puts it back on the counter. At this point, I don't even want to know what the heck it's for other than for customers to knock over. Went to Thanh's to get a smoothie. Owner was really nice and accommodating. At the time, I had only wanted a mango smoothie and saw that they also did peach as well so I had asked the owner if I could get a mix of a peach/mango smoothie. She complied with my wishes and served me my drink. The smoothie was amazing and you could really taste the freshness of the fruits. The boba wasn't too sweet but it wasn't too mushy or hard either. Fresh fruit smoothies in Honolulu's Chinatown... My car thermometer read 95 degrees and my phone told me that it was 88 degrees outside. Either way, it was hot as an oven! I was baked! Since it was Sunday, I had free street parking in a metered stall. I walked through Maunakea Marketplace to one of the outdoor vendors named Thanh Coffee and Bubble Tea. In the past, I had been here with friends and have had the Lychee, watermelon, and mango smoothies. I knew that prices were fairly reasonable and that service was efficient. On this visit, I noticed that a Pennywort drink was on the menu. Pennywort is supposed to decrease anxiety, improve memory and help with fatigue. Its taste reminds me of celery - on the earthy green side. They must have added some sweetener to make it palatable... haha! It's refreshing! Anyway, if you need a cool beverage, this is a popular place. They will give you a number on a wooden tile when there are many orders at one time. Even though there are seats and tables covered with umbrellas I prefer to find some air conditioning and take my drink elsewhere to enjoy... Remember - this is Chinatown. Starting my next review after #200, I thought I would review a small business that I frequent quite often!! Yes, a lot of businesses including this one in Maunakea Marketplace have been affected due to the pandemic; and now thanks to the recent economic crisis. They may not be open daily, but when they are, please stop by!! These smoothies ranges with a variety of exotic flavors which displays the creativity of Chinatown. Sure, you can get your regular banana, blueberry, or strawberry; BUT if you are feeling adventurous...they have a good assortment of fruits which I suggest you try. Personally, I like to step out of my comfort zone, and get something new: jackfruit, soursop, or even a blend of tropical fruits such as: a pineapple and mango smoothie!! Of course, you cannot go wrong with some boba (tapioca) in there as well!! Some people are not fans, but hey, whatever floats your boat. The wife says: "Really yummy smoothies! Once, they let us know that the taro smoothie would be powdered taro, not real fruit. Love that its fresh and reasonably priced. We tried a few combinations; cashier also suggested a few drinks to us." So not everything is REAL FRUIT, but it doesn't hurt to ask. We ordered a papaya with pearls. Very cool and refreshing! He made it super quick within 3 minutes. We asked for no sugar since we were watching our sugar intake. Still super good especially on a hot day. The boba (pearls) quality is wonderful. It is not old and is of good quality, and complimented the drink very well. Stop by this place to get something drink after pick up gift around here. When I come Maunakea Market place, there are couple boba smoothie place in here but I usually buy my brink here. There are many people front of place(of course there are couple table front of this place), I and my husband stand in line and order. The lady told us they don't have boba today and is it okay? No problem for us. But they charged full amount (with boba price). Huuummm, there's menu "iced coffee $4.00/iced coffee with pearls $5.50". $1.50 different from with and without. I've been here for several years now and it's always my favorite go-to cheap bubble drink place. They're located right outside the courtyard doors that go into the Maunakea Marketplace. The guy who started this little joint is the same owner of that bubble drink place in the Dillingham Plaza next to Sugois and Pancakes and Waffles. I heard a rumor that he sold it to this lady who was always there too. I don't know their names, but I've always called him uncle everytime I come and he knows my favorite drink is the iced mungbean OR when I'm in the mood, it'll be banana strawberry smoothie. What I love about this place is that they're super cheap and there's no taxes...whaaaaat. I honestly don't know what else I can tell you that they make there other than the drinks because I've literally only ordered those 2 drinks. The banana strawberry smoothie is $5 and my mungbean is $4.50. As for the parking situation..it's Chinatown..good luck lol, just don't get a ticket cause that's HPD's training grounds and they'll ticket you for everything. I usually don't care much about customer service, since the food/drinks are my main focus. This is also in Chinatown, so I don't expect the best service in the world or anything. However, when the customer service I got was similar to the treatment at the TSA line of a busy airport...that ruins the taste of the drink. I had simply asked if I could add boba (free of charge) to the drink after I had already paid. The nice cashier relayed it to stand owner, who then yelled. His tone was unnecessarily condescending, and told me I should have ordered it that way. I would have understood if he said no nicely, but his reasoning and tone bothered me and my family. He was also very rushed even though there was no line. My family was still craving smoothies after, so we went to Chau's Fresh Fruit, which is a couple stands away. My mother ordered the Vietnamese Iced Coffee both times and she said it was delicious. Servers are very friendly. Okay, first of all what?! Finally a place that sell Durian. I have been looking for so many places for durian smoothies and the fact that they also sell boba as well?! That's two birds with one stone. If you are a fan of Durian, and boba this is the perfect place on the island to go to. There was another place in Chinatown however, they were charging almost $10 for a durian smoothie... that's pretty high, but here, it is $7 for a pretty big sized durian smoothie with boba. The store is small, but very cute and clean. They have a display of a lot of fresh fruit in the front. There was watermelon, honeydew, mango, etc. many many options if you are not a fan of durian and would like a fresh fruit smoothie. I was kind of worried when I ordered it because many times people don't make the boba goood or the drink itself, but I was open minded. This durian smoothie was so bomb and refreshing! This is my *happy-dance happy* fresh fruit boba place. When I'm in the area, you just *don't know* how hard it is for me to not make an automatic beeline straight there because Yep: Fresh fruit boba is my crack. Hehe :D This is the sister store, or shall I say the son store, of my most fav bubble drink place called, "Thang's French Coffee & Bubble Tea," that's located in Kalihi on Kalani Street. Difference btwn this one and the Kalihi shop is that owner of this shop is the son of the ultra-nice and cool owner, Thang, of the aforementioned Kalihi store! How cool! :) That said, you know that this store has likely got to be another delicious, real, fresh fruit deal! Alright! I am so happy and thrilled that it's smack dab in the center of Chinatown along Maunakea Street! Why happy? Each time I've been there recently to try various notoriously delicious restaurant/food places here in Chinatown (Maguro Brothers & Pho To-Chau..so far!), I've come here to partake in one of these cold, delicious, not too icy, totally fruity bubble drinks! Tastes just like the same product! Except! I swear that the cups are just a wee bit larger! Yahoo!! :D Plus, the prices are equally as terrific as the Kalihi version and a little bit cheaper (50¢ less which comes to $3.50 or $3 depending which drink choice) which actually makes up for some of the parking fee, that is, unless you find free street parking and/or consolidate your Chinatown visit to keep it brief or won't stay in Chinatown for very long. I knew this store was somewhere there in Chinatown but little did I know where it was. From Maguro Brothers (in the Kekaulike Market), the pair led me across Hotel Street in the mountain direction straight into the Maunakea Market (on the other side of Hotel Street) that leads (turn right when inside and walk toward Maunakea Street) into an open-air seating area that has not just one, but two different bubble drink places (along with a bunch of other small, very hole in the side of the bldg businesses). This location has all of the same drinks that Thang's Kalihi has and guess what my favorite will be?! Papaya! Papaya! Papaya! :D (You would have known the answer had you read my review for the Kalihi shop! Haha!) I just can't seem to get away from papaya but really when I've got a good taste thing going on there, why would I wanna try anything else, yeah?! Lol Well, now that I've had a few papaya drinks here, I will definitely have to try their other flavors at this location too: FRESH FRUIT watermelon, honeydew melon, mango, taro, ..and bunch of many others! After seeing Jeffrey A.'s pic of this establishment that is now under NEW management and name, I just had to stop by after running some errands in Chinatown this morning. It was sure muggy and if you ask me, what a great place to stop by here to cool down with a drink! Previously under THANG French Coffee and Bubble Tea, this place is now THANH French Coffee and Bubble Tea. In my observation earlier today, it's pretty much the same thing - - the menu, pictures, drinks and staff, who still greet you with a smile upon ordering. Luckily it was raining when I arrived so there was no line at all. I had the taro bubble drink with NO pearls ($3) and it was made instantly. In about 2 minutes I got my full cup of yummy taro drink! Behind me was a Caucasian couple visiting from out-of-town and they had just ordered iced French - Vietnamese coffee and the wife commented on how pretty my drink was. I told her it's taro and she seemed a little puzzled so I started to explain what my drink is - - something like drinking a mild and somewhat sweet and very pleasant POI! It got her attention so I offered her a sip and she LOVED it! The next thing I know her husband seem intrigued so I also had him try and also received thumbs up. This place has been here for many years now and very SOLID when delivering cold drinks and snacks. When it's busy, especially on the weekends, the lines are long and they give you a number after ordering and paying for your drink. Don't know why this place has so many good reviews. I had the worse avocado smoothie EVER... I knew it was a bad choice when I saw the owner making it. 1. She only put half avocado instead of a whole avocado. 2. She added water instead of milk. 3. Again, she added more water. At this point I knew it was going to be bland. Who the Heck add water to avocado smoothie??? And what kind of place only put half an avocado in the smoothie??? U get the point. Worse Fricking avocado smoothie EVER. This hole in the wall is a great place to help you beat the summer heat. It is a bubble tea shop that uses fresh fruit to make these blended bubble teas. We ordered the iced coffee this time and asked that they cut down on the pearls in the drink, pearls are not my favorite. We forgot to tell them we wanted it blended but it was still delicious. I think all of the drinks are only $4.50. We have tried many different fruit flavors in the past and to me they are all good. Can't go wrong here. read more
