I'll say the cocktail program in this "Patchogue-chic" spot is solid and fantastic; Laura has poured me great drinks with good convo. Past nights Anthony showed great knowledge and skills behind the bar and one night readjusted my understanding of the history of the building (which I dig, I love that Shands General store was actually the oldest building in town and I'm glad it's a nod back to that, with brick house stepping out and its' sign remaining on the back of the building) I should say that basically, for the majority, the front of the house is great; Very few exceptions there but they do exist. A while back I had wanted a fresh pasta and to show someone the place, but Shands had beef Wellington on the menu and it's one of my favorites that you really don't see everywhere or splurge for often. So there it was, I knew my order, started with a French onion and short rib soup, but this had ZERO SHORT RIB and was pretty lack luster, & come to think of it, one of the least appealing French onion soups I've had, real unfortunate; the crouton/bread was so deteriorated it was as if it had been sitting in the broth for 2 days. A good French onion really should have the bread floated when broiling the cheese over the top to form a nice crust, instead the crouton was submerged and dissolved as the cheese was just a melty glob of what seemed to be presented more like a mozzarella than Gruyère or Swiss, but it had a sharpness in there I just don't know about this execution I guess... there was a lack of onion, and a lack of flavor, it needed depth which maybe the short rib gives it if "the chef is feeling generous enough that night " to include it. $20 soups for the both of us and only one of the bowls had any of the short rib, unfortunately for them, the douche who likes to post on Yelp is the one that didn't get any. butternut hummus was good... it came out looking like they dropped the bowl on the way over but no big deal My first time in, I had a heavenly, light and flavorful, melt you into a damn puddle, pasta dish; it was the Mafaldine at its best) Really miss those duck wings they sourced locally. Sad story about the local duck farm "Crescent". He had to euthanize his entire population due to a bird flu outbreak, they supplied 4% of the duck to the entire country but sadly had to close down at the end of january; the staff let me know and I had to research it quick. (I imagine this is an issue sweeping the nation as we've all seen egg prices explode) The prep that Shands did on those things... they were next level! Typically you'd think a duck wing would be a little less meat or a bit tougher than a chicken but they did really well making them so tender and heavenly, impressive work honestly; maybe they can pay homage with some other type... I'd try some ostrich wings... it would probably be like a bbq rib or something... I digress. On to the main show, the Wellington... The portion was indeed large, it was a nice cut of meat but this really should have been showcased better. I'm sure the staff at places like this think everything they do is perfect and I'm just a jerk for mentioning my dismay here on Yelp, but they served a beef Wellington where the inside of the puff pastry crust was soggy... the outside crust was cooked but a great Wellington has a FLAKY crust, this wasn't that. At this crazy price your beef Wellington should be perfect or at least satisfying. The rest of the technique on the dish was fine, it had the right stuff which shockingly I've had wellingtons where they didn't do the mushrooms or didn't do the prosciutto layer so I appreciated that. I'm also pretty sure they used Duxelles and cooked them down wonderfully which is an easy step to miss that could ruin everything. Wellington ain't easy to perfect, I myself don't work well with puff pastry and I cannot even make a halfway decent Wellington but in my humble opinion, this wasn't too great either. Overall, would I suggest you go and spend your own $300 on this meal? No. I can't tell you that your money is well spent here. I've been to countless cheaper, nicer, and tastier places that don't have pretension baked into the price. Long Island can be a wasteland sometimes. Good meals I've had here included things like the hanger steak, pasta dishes, duck wings, Brussels and hummus.. maybe even their squash blossoms if I remember right... it's possible that wasn't them though. The brunch: steak and eggs were glorious, but even better were my nieces pancakes! Holy crap, how do they get them so thick yet so airy, fluffy, and dreamy? You can spend less if you take a train to Manhattan but have a drink here, those are never a miss.

I made one easily earlier that day and when we arrived around 7:30, it was not packed, but it is pretty loud in there even half full. Our waiter, Jonathan, expertly took such great care of us from start to finish, even taking my father's dad jokes in stride. There's a solid cocktail menu, but I had a couple glasses of a better-than-decent prosecco. My cousin loved his espresso martini. For food, count on a couple respectable vegan entrees and I went with the Japanese eggplant with cashew ricotta. The eggplant is delicious, slightly sweet with a creamy rather than chewy (thank god) texture. The cashew ricotta is also tasty, but I do think it needed to be blended a bit more to remove the slightly grainy texture (the cashews might have needed more soaking). My father loved his French onion soup and pastrami sandwich. Separate paragraph for the fries. They deserve it. I'm glad we ordered these to share- it's an enormous platter of them. I appreciated that they were salted perfectly. I appreciate restaurants that can make satisfy a variety of preferences and dietary restrictions. The vibe here is festive and vibrant and a great choice for groups and families.

Now these Wednesday crowds could be due to the half price options they throw out there all day long. ANY drink at WhiskeyNeat is half off on hump day plus there are a handful of small plates that also follow this discounted direction. I'll say things might be a little pricier if you're not coming here in the middle of the week, but it's well worth making the trip to slash at least your drinks (and maybe some grub) in two. Enough about all that because the food, drinks, and service is where this place really shines. I downed two of their bourbon cocktails (Goldrush and Billionaire) both being outstanding in taste and quality (my wife enjoyed a well-made margarita). Food-wise, we sampled some hand cut fries (delicious), short rib croquettes (delectable), a mahi taco (fresh), pulled pork slider (tender), gochujang wings (zingy), and a twice baked potato (creamy). All these items were half price (reminder, they were small plates of grub so don't freak for how much we ate). We also paid full menu price to try a side of hot honey cauliflower which was fantastic as well. Before wrapping up, I do want to give a shout out to the staff or at least our waitress who was friendly, helpful in giving us drink options, and chatted with us a bit about WhiskeyNeat and other good nearby food spots. She guided us through the menu on what to order and even realized she had forgotten to put in one of our small plate orders without us asking. Good service always helps in reaching a full slew of Yelp stars. Overall, it may have taken almost two years to use the gift card to WhiskeyNeat, but I'm glad we finally did because dang was it a superb meal. Our waitress said "You'll be back" once we told her it was our first time and even before we had finished eating everything. I mean hard to disagree with that statement. Perhaps I'd aim to save some mulah and only come on a Wednesday, but with great drinks and grub to be had, it might just be worth coming any time, gift card or not!

I respectfully asked him to clarify how that policy is determined, but he refused to provide an explanation. When I asked for his name, he responded that he "doesn't have one" and immediately ignored me, turning his attention to the next customer approaching the entrance. I found this interaction to be extremely unprofessional and discourteous. My concern is less about the entrance fee itself and more about the lack of transparency and the dismissive manner in which my questions were handled. Customers should be treated with respect when asking reasonable questions about a business's policies. Since he refused to identify himself, I have attached a photo of the individual. Because of this experience, I intend to share my concerns with management. Unfortunately, this interaction has left a very negative impression, and I do not plan on returning.

We made our OpenTable reservation a week in advance and noted that we'd have our 5-lb Yorkie, requesting outside seating if possible because we weren't sure where dogs were permitted. We weren't being picky and understood it was Labor Day weekend. When we arrived, the hostess explained that our reserved table was inside, so we'd need to wait for a dog-friendly table. She said we'd have priority because we had a reservation. No problem! We got drinks at the outdoor bar and didn't wait long. When another woman eventually seated us, I smiled, said hello and thanked her. She gave me what I can only describe as a dirty look. I shrugged it off, assuming she was stressed because they were busy. Our waitress was fantastic. A busser even kindly offered our dog a water bowl. We ordered drinks and an appetizer and were enjoying ourselves when the woman who seated us suddenly came over, threw water down at the foot of my fiancé's chair and said, "You know your dog is marking up our chairs!" To be completely clear: our tiny Yorkie had urinated on the leg/base of an OUTDOOR chair. He did NOT defecate anywhere. We were eating and hadn't noticed him briefly lift his leg underneath the table. We weren't upset that she told us -- we were stunned by HOW she handled it. Had she simply said, "Excuse me, your dog urinated on the chair," we would have apologized and immediately addressed it. This is an outdoor dining area at a restaurant that allows dogs, and your own staff had just offered our dog water. If dogs are welcome, situations involving them should be handled professionally. If you don't want dogs there, don't allow them. Our dog is five pounds, quiet and friendly. Other guests and children were stopping by our table to pet him. Had we not already ordered dinner, we would have paid for our drinks and appetizer and left after this interaction. Unfortunately, it didn't end there. My fiancé ordered a filet with a $9 upcharge for hollandaise sauce. The sauce didn't arrive with his steak, so he began eating before it got cold. When the same woman walked by, he mentioned the missing sauce. Instead of apologizing, she said, "Yeah, that can come out later." A $9 sauce ordered for a steak should arrive WITH the steak. He told her he no longer wanted it. She said okay but apparently never communicated that, due to being too busy chatting standing around with others. A busser later brought it and we had to reject it. Our evening cost approximately $200. Expecting our complete meal to arrive together and expecting to be treated respectfully are not unreasonable expectations. I told our waitress about the interactions while making it VERY clear none of this reflected on her. That's when we learned this woman was actually the MANAGER. Our waitress was extremely apologetic, although she had nothing to apologize for. She did her job beautifully, and we made sure to tip her well in cash. That's what makes this so disappointing. This restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere, decent food and phenomenal staff. The person who negatively affected our experience was the person who should have been setting the standard. Yes, customers should be responsible for their pets, and we would have immediately addressed the situation had we noticed. But these are outdoor tables and chairs exposed to birds, squirrels and other animals. The hostile reaction to a five-pound dog briefly lifting his leg was unnecessary. There is a right and wrong way to address an issue. Speak to your customers like human beings. Throwing water beside someone's chair while they're eating and speaking to them disrespectfully is unacceptable. To our waitress and the other hardworking staff: THANK YOU. You were wonderful. To the manager: your staff is phenomenal. You should consider taking some customer-service training from them.
