Maybe I'm getting old. I came here with my two sisters for Christmas dinner 2014. It was the first time that I came here and I have lived in the area for 60 years. What a relief. I was beginning to think that there wasn't a restaurant in the country that I could sit relax and enjoy my food without being harassed, and assaulted by extremely loud music, BIG screen TV's, my waiter dancing in a line dance and banging into the bench we we're sitting... Twice, another loud birthday bash singalong. Restaurants have gone to far in trying to entertain. FYI, it's not entertainment, It's an assault. I found The Old Mill to be relaxing. The service was accommodating but not badgering, exempli gratia, How's your food - Would you like more coffee - Did you like my song and dance - An amusing anecdote - Hopping around my table like jackrabbits and getting on my nerves - Another amusing anecdote interruption - ENOUGH. The Atmosphere It was a sawmill near a mill stream so wood and plank board everywhere. Rustic. Warm. A family run rare charm. The Food I had the house ribeye. It was great. My sister had shrimp scallop and another order to go. She liked it. My other sister had the New York Sirloin. She said, more than twice, it was the best. Overall I think The 1761 Old Mill is great for the entire family, extended family, and perfect for business outings. Enjoy. read more

I hadn't been back to this restaurant since I was a little boy. Last week however my wife's boss recommended it as a good place for a birthday dinner my sister had coming up so we gave it a shot. The atmosphere here is just lovely. You know this is going to be something a little bit different and off the beaten path when you walk the covered bridge over the river and into the restaurant, past a basket of bread so people who are waiting can feed the ducks and geese. We were seated in a nice room overlooking the lake. The decor is very rustic and comfortable, exactly what you'd expect from an old mill. The food was a pleasant surprise. We started by sharing the dinner size warm spinach salad for the table - a really nice mix of flavors dressed with a delicious vinegarette. The bread basket also bears mentioning. Delicious pecan rolls as well as more pdestrian but quite tasty home made dinner rolls, and a basket of corn fritters with maple syrup. Yum! I ordered the roast pork tenderloin special - a ton of beautifully char roasted pork morsels with yummy garlic mash and a dish of vegetable on the side (I chose the butternut squash, also quite tasty). This is definitely an excellent choice for any special occasion, or even a nice dinner out as the prices are fairly reasonable for what you get. The dessert tray looked impressive but none of us had any room :) Thoroughly recommended. read more

I don't know how I have not reviewed this place before now. The setting alone is worth the drive to the western part of Mass. They do a great Sunday Brunch buffet that we try to do at least once a year with friends. Then I have a different set of friends that we meet to have drinks and dinner in the "lounge" The food is ok but you can't beat the location and they never try to rush us out. I've been to large private parties here and they do a great job. Recommend. read more

I agree with many of the review posted prior; at one point in time this place was a great place to eat. Now they simply hang on to the attraction of their fritter and pecan rolls served before dinner (which was the best part of our meal experience) Could we have simply dined on just a bad day? I don't think so. We started our evening in the lounge with a drink. A lounge should be exactly that...a lounge. Staffers seemed more preoccupied with serving meals than making sure everyone who had arrived had a drink. We were sitting at the bar a good ten minutes before being acknowledged. Once served my glass was gritty. Our wait was not bad for a very busy Saturday (we did not make reservations) As always the Old Mill is tastefully decorated. The room we were in was full of mostly larger parties of 6 or more, which made the room very loud. We opted to not even try to communicate with each other because the room was that loud. Perhaps larger parties should be in a separate room and smaller parties be placed in an other. One table near us had children who were up and down and running around the room, another had a screeching child. Again another good reason to place couples and small parties in separate areas. Our meal....I had prime rib, was okay but very fatty. The side dishes horrible. My date had veal marsala. Great cuts of veal, yet the sauce had not even a hint of marsala in it. We agreed that it merely tasted like a can of Franco American gravy spiked with baby bella mushrooms. Service..OK...just ok. We will probably not go to the Old Mill again...we would have had a more satisfying meal and overall dining experience at Friendly's. read more

The old mill is surely a historic and serene place! Today was my first visit and boy was I impressed! We celebrated my fiance's dad's birthday at the brunch buffet! The food was amazing, the variety was amazing and everything was cooked perfect and had great flavor! I tried the scrambled eggs, homefries, bacon, had a small piece of French toast, a waffle a blueberry stuffed pancake, corn fritter, pecan bun, steak tips, lasagna type pasta dish, and dessert Most everything I tried was amazing, and the service was great...only thing I didn't care for was the pre made type dessert wedges...just weren't my fav but there was plenty of other desserts to choose from! We will Definitely be back for dinner and brunch!! read more

Oh my God I SOOOOOO wish this place had a good menu and good food and good service. So cute and quaint and New Englandy and all that. The restaurant itself is horrible. From the spiderwebs I saw on the chandelier when I first walked into our private room for my parents' anniversary, to the menu stuck in 1983, this place is sadly disappointing. The food was basically tasteless, and the choices were weak. Food was sooooo slow. Drinks - meh. I liked the pecan rolls, basically the only good thing on the table. Out of my family of 13, no one liked their food. Such a bummer. On the plus side, they made setting up the party really easy, and the girl who waited on us was super sweet and did her absolute best. I had a feeling this place would be great. I'm glad my honey picked it and we went with it. Our waitress Danielle was very sweet and attentive. I gave them 5 stars but she definitely gets that for her service . I ordered the Sea Scallops just happy they did not doused this with butter it was perfect with a couple drizzle of lemon. Very satisfied and so was my boyfriend and his sister. We loved the experienced we had. The pecan roll I've got to say was awesome especially when you dipped it in the syrup, oh my, excellent. This place is a gem. It's so old and charming and makes you feel so warm and homey. They have this cute little pond were you can feed ducks and a huge fire place right when you enter. What I'm obsessed with is their brunch on Sundays which is ALWAYS busy and a little pricey at 20 dollars but you do get a free class of champagne. The food varies and changes and is amazing. They also have a meat carving station and a huge dessert table. I've never had anything bad from the buffet! They also do parties! I have my cousins baby shower coming up! read more

A neat, quaint old place with a great setting of running water and duck pond. Very rustic, as it is formerly an old mill. As you would expect, the inside is rather rustic as well, big open hearth fireplace, wood flooring when you enter and carpeted dining areas. Has a country/ colonial feel and ambiance to it. The wait staff is very friendly and accommodating. They offer on Sunday both a regular dinner menu and a buffet. I usually steer away from buffets, but this one looked pretty good. That said, I didn't want to eat that much on a Sunday, so I took a pass. I had the prime rib, which was good. I'm always disappointed when I get a prime rib in Mass and it doesn't have the bone. I really don't get that, you have to serve prime rib with the bone or its not prime rib. Anyway, good over all experience and the pricing was moderate, from about $13 to $20, with some hirer priced specials. Overall good experience, not high end, but good. read more

If you like old buildings and like traditional food, the Old Mill is for you. But bring your appitite... they tend to give you a LOT of food. The rolls, corn fritters, and sweet buns are a meal all alone! We like to try and save them for the end, as a dessert. If you eat them first, when they bring them to you, you may very well not finish the main course... I usually get fish there. Never had a problem. I don't get there as often as I like, but I have always loved the smell of the building (old wood) and the view out onto the water. My friend and I had a rather unpleasant experience here in October 2018. To sum it up, we waited in the pub forever for a seat, which is the norm there, so no quibble there. A waiter informed us we could be seated "right away" upstairs, so off we went. Well over 20 min later we were finally seated upstairs. The waitress was curt and impatient and clearly wanted to clock out as they were to close soon. That being said, once we were finally seated, we were left alone in the dining room for at least 20 minutes before she reappeared to take our order. ??? As if that wasn't enough, something was awry with their card machine, causing us to wait a good 20 mins for the owner to show up, yadeedah. I called the very next day and left a voicemail in the owner's box requesting he return my call...guess what? Never heard back. Stumbled across this joint during one of our insane let's-take-a-drive Saturdays. When the monotony of the road has got you down, it's time to hit up some food. It is a great combination of kitsch and homestyle here. Love the outside area which was icy and pretty with some ducks. Would like to come back in the spring/summer when it would be more fun to wander around a little more. The food was decent. In fact, it was better than I anticipated when I saw the decor inside. Holy 1986 batman! I mean that's only 225 years off of their target date. It has an odd conglomeration of really old beams and floral wallpaper and curtains. I wish I had taken pictures. The so-called "Irish Nachos" were hilarious and huge. We thought the combination was quite tasty. The maple buns they serve are delicious. However, my chicken wrap was pretty horrific; I don't recommend getting that. It had no flavor whatsoever and was just very unsatisfying. I was trying to keep it simple with my order, but I suspect that a warm entree would have been a better choice. I saw some Haddock Casserole go by and it had to be better than what I ate. So, a little bit mixed on the food. Definitely don't think you're going to find health food here, but we enjoyed the overall experience. read more

This visit earned 3-stars instead of 2 due to the complimentary pecan rolls and corn fritters provided as a starter, the appetizer we ordered, and the uniqueness of the place. Little bridges and streams, geese, and views. We had a window seat upstairs in the restaurant proper (i.e. not the 1st floor pub) so we had a great view of everything. We loved the look and feel and thought we were in for a stellar meal. We enjoyed the basket of rolls and fritters and ordered drinks and a starter (cheesy spinach and artichoke dip). The dip was yummy - with loads of what must have been smoked gouda. Service was unfortunately pretty slow, with only a couple other tables to wait on, but our waitress was very nice. Lunch for us consisted of filet mignon for him and the Vegetable Chic-kette Plate for me. First off, the food presentation was sub-par and not well thought out. The fillet mignon came on a piece of romaine lettuce. Not rocket or something with actual flavor that goes well with steak, but a useless floppy piece of romaine lettuce. The steak was ordered medium but was chewy and boring. Sides came in their own little bowls rather than arranged nicely on the plate. My Chic-kettes were extremely disappointing. A 'vegetarian favorite' they certainly are not and it is not substantial enough to be called a meal. There are good meat substitutes out there and there are poor ones. These were ick. I was given probably 15-20 of them in a bowl with a side of mustard. Menu says cranberry sauce comes with them too, which seemed a little weird at the time, but it didn't actually come with it at all. I just got mustard. For $12 I was not at all impressed. It would have been better as an appetizer, not that I will ever order it again. The other veggie option is Mushroom Tortellini but I wasn't in the mood for pasta. We didn't ask about dessert since we were pretty disappointed and didn't want to stick around any longer. We both had bottled beers/cider so I don't know how well they mix their drinks. read more

Went here for the brunch buffet with the wife and our youngest, sans our two other children since they were at the circus, so we were already in a good mood. The décor lived up to the name. We walked in after looking for a bit at the ducks and the waterfall to be greeted by a large fireplace. They also had a basked of old rolls that you could take to feed the ducks. We waited 30 minutes and I would recommend if you want to be seated sooner to make a reservation. The waitress we had was very nice. The buffet itself was fairly good. They had a good spread of breakfast and lunch items along with a number of desserts. this also included a roast beef and ham carving station. I am not a huge sweets fan but I have to say my favorite at the buffet were the pecan rolls. They were delicious. If I remember correctly the buffet had salad, two types of scrambled eggs (one plain and one with peppers onions and ham), bacon, sausage, corn fritters, pancakes stuffed with blueberries, french toast, waffles, baked stuffed manicotti, baked whitefish with crumb and seafood topping, steak tips (yum), home fried potatos, some type of chicken topped with bbq sauce along with cheese and bacon(not yum, too dry not good). I'm sure I'm missing something else that was in the buffet. Like I said, I'm not a huge sweets fan and I was pretty full so I didn't partake in the desserts. My wife had some and from what I can remember there was apple crisp, chocolate chip cookie pie, some cheesecakes, lemon squares, and some super rich chocolate pie. Visit The Old Mill with this exact plan: Come when it's busy and expect an hour wait. Promptly go down into the bar/lounge for a drink. Take your drink outside along with the serve-yourself cheese and pretzels and enjoy the beautiful scenery. When you're done, you'll have just enough time to peruse the giant gift shop before they call your name. The food was just OK but the experience overall was worth the trip which is why I'm giving them four stars. read more

This is the place where my wife and I celebrate our wedding anniversary! You can't beat the view outside especially during the winter. Inside you are welcomed to an oversized fireplace. We love the corn fritters and pecan rolls with bread to start off the meal. My wife usually gets the tortellini alfredo, I enjoy the stuffed chicken breast. Don't forget to visit the gift shop downstairs after your meal and also a picture with the ducks. read more

I've been coming here off and on for many, many years. We actually have not been here for a while, other than the occasional invite to a party. It's a beautiful setting with a rustic interior. We came for an early dinner yesterday. Our server Lindsey and the service was very good. We had stuffed shrimp and teriyaki tips. Both entrees were good, not stellar...but good. The pilaf we both ordered was kind of bland and poor quality. I thought the dishes could have been more attractively plated. I guess you come for the fritters, pecan rolls, ducks, etc. The creme brulee was very good and recommended. They have more "Ole Skool" desserts that most places. We will return, but probably not right away. It's still recommended and worth a trip. read more

It's a 9 minute drive from Great Wolf. Highly recommend especially if you want to get away from the "water park" scene for a little while. read more

I had a very disappointing experience while dining here today for brunch. There were several tables where kids were watching movies loudly and it was very disturbing. If your kid can't sit still don't bring them here or bring headphones so others aren't disturbed. I asked the hostess if they could do something about it and she said they can't tell them to stop. I told her the next time I come I'll be playing music loudly at my table. It's terrible that this establishment does not care about the enjoyment of their guests. read more

What a cute little find on a route 2 road trip! This is an amazing spot to stop with many options for all types of diners. There's a small pub below with a gorgeous view of a flowing brook. Upstairs there is ample seating throughout the restaurant, and limited seating outside on the veranda with a beautiful view of a still pond with ducks and geese. We tried the pub expecting a cheaper menu, but found out later, that both pub and restaurant have the same! Teriyaki steak tips were good, but the rice pilaf was dry and sticky. Interesting ambiance - you walk into the restaurant past a pond full of ducks waiting for you to toss leftover bread towards them. Once you step inside it feels like you just got transported decades back. If you have a chance to meander down to the gift shop it's an interesting closet sized store of random and miscellaneous items with no real theme. Country styled mill which houses a restaurant ( as the name suggests), it has a Cracker Barrel feel to it. Generous portions, as someone else mentioned the corn fritters and pecan rolls are a meal in themselves. If you are lucky enough to get a table by the window, you'll see a pretty stream or a pond. The only reason I take off one star is the service is very slow, friendly but slow. It took us close to two hours to get Irish nachos and pasta. Overall recommended if you're close to the area and want to get out of urban settings for a while! read more

This is an updated review, as my other review was 7 years old. We decided to give the Old MIll another shot as my wife loves to feed the ducks at the duck pond, which is beautiful. I haven't had great experiences with the food, but we decided to give it another try, The corn fritters were excellent, and real whipped butter was a nice touch for starters. The clam chowder was creamy and thick, which was also good. The pecan rolls were also delicious. I ordered the Roast Country Duck with orange sauce, which was on top of pecan stuffing, a side of mashed, and real cranberry sauce. The duck was very large, and very average tasting compared to other duck plates I have had. The surf and turf was very mediocre. The scallops were very good and cooked perfect, and the baked shrimp was good also, but what should be the star of the plate (8 oz New York Strip) was disappointing. It was very bland, and on the tough side. Overall it was an improvement over our last visit year many years ago, and I would come back just for the setting. The food, although consistent, is mediocre, but the atmosphere is top notch. The service is always good here as well. read more

Came here for lunch while I was in MA for a seminar. Great restaurant. It says on a little lake and though the wait was long because of lunch time, I sat down below in the bar. I had a great Cesar salad which was huge and the New England clam chowder was delicious. They even served a bread basket that had what looked like hush puppies but I forget the term for them on the east coast. Service was friendly and I would come here again if I was in town for sure . read more

Went there with a group of coworkers and was a horrible experience. We waited 50+ minutes just to get drinks. Drinks were returned because they were all syrup no alcohol. Dinner was okay, veggie came out cold but fish was hot. Even asked for the manager however host was too busy warming up at the fire. Super frustrating, won't return. read more

This is so much more than just a restaurant, it has a beautiful outside and lots of different dining rooms! I'll be sure to check out the pub when I'm older, LOL. At night, there are glowing lantern string lights outside, and my family is always taking pictures outside the restaurant. I love the beautiful waterfalls, and this is speaking from a girl who loves to take scenery photos. There's a wide range of selection for food, and whenever I go there with a big group of my friends, there is a big long table for us, and we get our own private dining room. read more

Hubby raved about his New England Pot Roast and devoured it. Both my 5 year old and 1 year old enjoyed themselves immensely. Our server, Erica (I think) was wonderful and great with the kids. The setting is unique with enchanting waterfalls, covered bridges and rustic setting. Extra are special ( corn fritters and pecan rolls). The menu offers classics and traditional favorites. The service team works their butts off, but slow, somewhat unorganized or maybe just not enough of the right players with dirty tables. I would return, for the food was great and setting special. Brought the kids here during a weekend stay at GWL. Was very impressed with the appearance of the building, even though it was a dark rainy evening, would love to come back during the day to fully appreciate the grounds. We arrived around 5pm without reservations and were seated. Service was great. Food was ok. My steak was mediocre, stuffed shrimp were ok. Kid's fish and chips were good, kids sirloin was not. We all loved those pecan rolls though! All in all, if you are in the area for GWL, take some time away from the resort to head here for the ambiance and charm.
