This is the second year we ventured to The 1761 Old Mill from CT meeting our granddaughter halfway from Maine to have a lunch at a very exquisite venue supporting a family atmosphere of leisure and comfort. The historic outside construction along with the history of this establishment just makes one want to sit and wonder how it was 100 or 200 years ago. We sat outside enjoying the view of the pond with ducks, waterfall and just nature at its best. Our waitress, Adria, was very impressive, catering with a smile and seeming to know the exact times to check on our needs and satisfaction. She was knowledgeable about every dish and even made some suggestions based on our desires. The first introduction were the fritters with a nice glass of wine quenching our ordering of appetizers which were shared by all of us. The Irish Nachos and Spinach with Artichoke dip was perfect for the four of us. The main menu has just the right amount of offerings and three of us had the different versions of Haddock. If you are hungry, definitely order the haddock fish and chips meal which is plentiful for the most hearty appetite. If taste is on your mind then the stuffed haddock has it all blending a delicious stuffing with a good size portion of fish. On the lighter side, the baked haddock was just right for me sprinkled with Ritz crackers and a side of butternut squash cooked to perfection. The last member of our party had the Crispy Chicken Salad which was a bowl filled with the freshest ingredients that was light and filling at the same time. After our meal no one wanted to admit to wanting a desert but I did order a slice of cheesecake and key lime pie for sharing. Placed in the middle of the table everyone helped themselves to portions with a cup of freshly brewed coffee. An amazing meal for a family gathering along with reasonable prices, exquisite ambiance and our waitress, Adria. I just want to add that as great as a restaurant may be, the waitress is the contributing factor that can make a visit beyond one's expectations. Upon leaving, we ventured inside where items were for sale ranging from T-Shirts, Sweatshirts and other useful souvenir type commodities. As we exited we saw a barrel with packages of food for the ducks - what a great idea! It was a nice way of saying goodbye along with a family photo overlooking the pond. We have lunch and dinner here on the same day for our day trip to Mt. Greylock. The restaurant environment is very cozy and rustic that we enjoyed so much. We started the day with a late breakfast so we only have a few appetizers for lunch here. We ordered the fried calamari, bowl of New England clam chowder and shrimps cocktail for we three. It surprised us that they still offer us the corn fritters (with maple syrup on side) and pecan rolls (with whipped butter on side) complimentary. Originally with the current restaurant average 3.5 stars rating, I thought food here may be just ok quality, but it's actually better than I expected. The shrimp cocktails are very juicy and tender. Clam chowder is very smooth (can be better if a little bit more clam meat in it). Calamari is a little bit soft but not bad. We ended up ordered an extra order of corn fritters and pecan rolls to take home. For dinner, we ordered sirloin steak, shrimp & scallop alfredo, shrimp & sausage tortellini, along with salad and clam chowder (corn fritters and pecan rolls again complimentary). Shrimp on both dishes again juicy, tender and tasty. Scallops are soft and fresh. Sausage are chewy and tasty. Our relative complaint about the medium rare steak a bit too raw but we don't see blood from the steak anyway. Overall with the cozy environment and the food quality, I think it's well worth at least a 4 stars rating. read more

Beautiful setting with waterfall where mill used to be. Can sit outside or in: ducks beg from the tables outside. Inside is clean and updated. They start meal out with corn fitters (with honey and butter) and cinnamon rolls. This is puzzling: sweets seem like they need to go at the end of the meal, but anyway.... I had the broiled scallops. They were cooked fine and were nice and big. That said, there was nothing really very memorable about them. I had the acorn squash as the side, and was quite glad that Zin did. That was special. With restaurants RE-opening after the pandemic (is it over yet?) I was not as shocked here as at other places. You do get quality food, and it was less than $35 with drink and coffee. read more

I wanted to like this place, love the theme. The food was terrible if I was a cook I would be just embarrassed to serve this. I had the baked halibut which was so over cooked it might have been leftovers from 1761. My wife had shrimp and scallop Alfredo she said it had no taste...I tasted it and it had literally no taste. She gave me the "scallops " because she wasn't sure it was scallops, it wasn't it was that seafood meat you get in seafood salad at the deli. My 4 yr old got the kids pizza which we ended up all eating. Spent 100 bucks for really just a bad experience. I'm not sure why this place got any good reviews. read more

Made a mistake of going here on Easter Sunday for their fixed price menu, which supposedly included ham (warning, not baked ham, ham slices you buy at your local grocery store), soupy mashed potatoes served family style for a family of fewer than two, soupy butternut squash served family style for a family of less than 2, and a disaster for carrot cake for dessert. If it wasn't for the hush puppies, the sticky buns which are always delicious, and the good cup of coffee, which all came with the meal along with a small side salad with very good, chunky blue cheese dressing (lots of it), we would have given this meal a 0 stars. Ham was tasteless, sides were a joke, served in what normally would be a soup bowl, desserts were smothered in icing or whipped cream, probably to hide the taste (if there was any) or to add taste where none existed. All for the outrageous price of $33.99 + tyax + 20% expected tip. I would not recommend going there for any of their holiday fixed price offerings. They are all overpriced. We have eaten there before and found the food acceptable and the service excellent. The service was excellent and as attentive as you could expect for so few servers working the tavern in the lower level and the climb they had to do to retrieve your orders. The tavern is a great place to eat, reservations are never required, the view of the babbling brook and the waterfalls from the window is very scenic and calming. We will go again, but like we said, the holiday offering were a rip off. Normally we give 3-4 star ratings, but this day was a disaster. read more

Reservations can be made though. The manager as well (didn't get her name) was very pleasant to talk to. The price is what I would expect for a place like this. The OK - the service here was fair. Our server was a little busy. She did her job but when I did have an issue with the food, she got defensive and didn't let me finish before making sure that everyone knew she didn't make the food. She did not refill or ask to refill our drinks. The Bad - honestly, the food. The first thing they bring to all the tables is corn fritters and pecan rolls. The rolls were good, but the fritters were fried in too old oil and had a bitter taste on the outside. I had the 10oz sirloin which came out 3 different temps. One side was medium rare, one side was medium well, the middle was medium. I ordered medium. The other issue with my steak was there was no seasoning at all. Not even salt and pepper. And there wasn't even salt and pepper at our table. Summary - though our meal wasn't the best, I'm sure it was more a one-off than their standard. Such a cute location! Love this place! The charm alone makes it worth the drive to the location. We went to their Sunday brunch which is a buffet. The food was okay...not super hot and not a lot of vegetarian options. We sat in the garden room and there was very little room to maneuver, unfortunately, it was a very tight fit sitting at the tables. Our server, Amy, was very excited to have us as a table but she didn't let us sit down before she wanted to take our drink order which made it rather uncomfortable and tense in the first few minutes. My family has been to this restaurant a few times in the past year or two. Most visits were great: awesome food, great service, and left us feeling like it was a good place to come back to. Thery even did an amazing job handling a large party reservation for a family reunion. I would've rated the place as an 8.5/10-9/10. That said, our most recent visit was absolutely abysmal. Like 1/10 starts abysmal. Recently, a relative was visiting and my dad had his heart set on this restaurant. He had us drive 45 minutes to get there for this place, because he wanted to go there so badly. The bar on the first floor has the best view, so we sat there to have our meal. We started with drinks and ordered two appetizers. While we were waiting for those, the table next to us got LOUD. The kind of loud that you find in a night club with music blaring. There were some women screaming at each other, who had just met, a handful of men, who couldn't control their volume, and people who weren't even with their party standing around their table screaming. My dad put paper napkins in his ears to use as earplugs to see if that would help. nope. The tables around us started to pay their tabs and leave to get away from the noise. The server came around once or twice to ask how things were and we said "okay," but he never asked if we were ready to order. We eventually tried to look for him to ask the other party to quiet down. He said "oh, it's a bar, this is fine." Didn't care that it was making them lose business, as at this point most everyone else had abandoned the place. We asked if he was going to take our order, and he said "I was waiting for you to tell me you wanted to." Like...what? I have never in my life been to a sit-down restaurant where the served expected me to prompt them to place my order. At this point, since he also refused to do anything about the other people, we asked to either be moved or have the check. They have separate cash-out systems from the bar vs. the upstairs rooms, so we had to pay then get moved upstairs to one of the upper rooms of the restaurant and start a new receipt. Those service people had supposedly been informed of what was going on with our experience, but still started off with "do you want appetizers." Like...no, at this point I want my main food and to leave, we already did the first part. Some little kids were sat near us, but their volume had nothing on the people downstairs. My dad went to complain to management about the volume and management situation in the downstairs room, and got sort of rebuffed. They had moved us upstairs, sure, but they didn't try to make the experience better in any way. We got our food, which was good as always (albeit a little on the salty side), ate quickly, and left. It was pretty much ruined by the whole experience, and I can't see myself making any effort to go back in the near future - and neither does my dad, who had been so excited about it to begin with. No more 45-minute drives just to get to this place, that's for sure. read more

This place is AWESOME! We unfortunately went at night but it was even beautiful then. I highly recommend going during the day to enjoy the river and bridge that is intertwined by the restaurant. The inside is a super cool vibe it makes you feel engulfed in a different environment from the outside which is pretty cool. NOW the food. We started with caeser salad which was A+ quality and got these little balls of heaven that came with maple syrup. Now I'm a health nut but these little pastries..... WORTH splurging all of your calories on those. For the main course I got the baked haddock and it was excellent. Overall, very satisfied. I just wish they had more healthier options! This was my first time. I called ahead, and took their recommendation to make a reservation. I was glad I did. It was a Sunday and there were lots of big groups. The place was very charming, inside and out. Ducks in the pond, rolls to feed them, rustic setting, cute gift shop. Our server was very sweet and enthusiastic and appeared to be trying, but service wasn't that great. But she did encourage us to stay as long as we liked, which was nice. On her recommendation, we got the brunch buffet (vs ordering off the menu). The choices were substantial, and varied. Full hot breakfast items, meat, chicken, fish, pork, lots of sides and salad. Desserts and pastries looked really tempting. I tried a few breakfast items, lunch items and dessert, and nothing really "wowed" me. As the three stars indicate, A-ok. I don't plan on returning. I'd like to give 4 stars because it was charming, but for the price, I was hoping for really yummy food too. read more

Where to start, Amanda , our server, was amazing! Pleasant, humorous, honest, empathetic, and downright charming. She's probably the only reason I'd go back. I have been the Duke several times over the years. For those that aren't familiar with the title, being the Duke means you're the top-rated regular at a particular place. So, I ordered the baked haddock, which was supposed to be "fresh Atlantic haddock." My wife ordered seafood Newburg. My haddock was not only frozen, it was 4 pieces of very thin fish. Enough said. My wife's Newburg, and she ordered it light on the pasta, turned out to be a big plate of dry pasta, with some frozen shrimp a d some other kind of seafood. There was no trace of Newburg sauce. Amanda insisted I order something else, so I ordered a hamburger, cooked medium, plain. The burger was frozen patty, and it was way overcooked! Our wine was good, Amanda was great, but the food was terrible. They need to hire a chef, or a knowledgeable cook. If this place wasn't so famous and historic, I'd say burn it down and start over. read more
