Where do I even start? Should we talk about the noodle pulls from East West or the to-die-for baked goods at the Flour Shop? Think of it as this: an eclectic, vibrant, city vibes yet still local, food hall with multiple vendors and varieties and a laid back atmosphere. It's not just a food hall, it offers a co-working space, hangout spot, coffee shop, restaurant, venue, outside space. Ok it literally has it A L L. EAST WEST has all your Japanese inspired cravings: especially that RAMEN. Ooof. Actually, I lied, the bao buns are literally to faint for. You don't quite die. You enter this crazy, serotonin little food comma, then you come back to realize you're here. Just sitting in this really cool food hall, not quite in Japan, but still pretty dope. This spot is more than vegetarian friendly: it's vegetarian heaven. The impossible bao buns had me thinking: no, it's impossible to be THIS good. Ask for extra pickles, you'll thank me later. Ramen: don't be shy, slurp! Feeling adventurous? Go for that ponzu seared tofu rice bowl. All the tofu things here are so unboring. They really elevate it and make it the star of the show while throwing in some variety and popping flavors. Valley Greens I have yet to try only because I always psyche myself into just sticking to carb load. BUT I did try my friends falafel salad and it was bursting with flavors! So if you want to feel fresh and light, go for it! Newburgh Flour shop proudly serves Ready Coffee. And I mean, I'm always ready for that at anytime! There's so much goodness in one spot. Hopworks is on my bucket list for when I come to the Academy but I've managed to try every other cocktail instead. I do love that concept. My wife told me about how here and her friends had a great time at the Academy Kitchen, and how this place would be right up My alley. I was very impressed with the Ambiance and thought it was really nicely put together. The World Cup was playing and the entertainment section was packed. The lines for food seemed decent so I decided to try out "East - West", which had some really nice menu items. I went with a pork ramen bowl and a pork bao bun. The ramen noodles were a little over cooked but still ok. The Bao Bun was tasty but she could've done better with the plate presentation. Juices all over the plate. That's a presentation appetizer. Ok, I know a bit much, but it was all good. I'll be back to try out another spot and enjoy the vibes. read more

I love this space. It reminds me of a place back home. Lots of tables and quality choices. I got the bbq brisket. I like the chance to choose lean or moist. Looking back I should have asked for both but I got moist. It was a great mix of fat and meat. It's a hard balance to strike. The challenge is that the texture, while lovely, starts to get old. I really enjoyed the sauce it came with. Overall very pleased. The white barbecue sauce was crazy. I had only heard of it before. I thought it would taste like ranch but it doesn't. It looks creamy but doesn't taste creamy. If you blindfolded me I think I would say it was bbq sauce. Mac and cheese was really good too. The challenge with a not sharp cheese is it can get boring. But this was perfect. The kid got the dumplings from the East West. He didn't eat any because he was being difficult but I loved them. Slightly sweet insides and a perfect outside. I tried the impossible bai too. Pretty neat idea. The wife was a big fan. She also got the veggie ramen and loved it so much that she didn't even bother to share. read more

The Academy is a space that reminds me a lot of a scaled down version of Industry City in Brooklyn. It has the requisite coffee shop, courtyard, food hall, coworking space, bar, etc to make it a good spot to park yourself for any part of your day. I had the chasu pork belly tonkatsu ramen from East-West which came in a flavorful broth and was perfect for filling the stomach on a cold day after some drinks at the bar. My companions really enjoyed the ribs, brisket, and sausage from Smoke 33. I went on a Monday night so my experience was of a relatively empty space. Overall a great place to hang out and catch up with friends. read more

I don't know why this listing hasn't been taken down. The Academy closed the Food Hall and Restaurant after only 1 year of operation. Came here a week before they closed with friends and they were already calling it a night (at 7:30pm on a Wednesday). Bartender was impatient and snapped at us to hurry with our drink orders as she was wrapping up her shift and closing early. The only food option available to us that night was the BBQ stand, which was amazing btw, but not everyone in our group ate BBQ. The Academy needs to get their act together to salvage this mess. What a disappointment for Poughkeepsie. read more

After what seems like months or years of teasing on social media The Academy food hall in Poughkeepsie is finally open. Well I should really say somewhat open or partially open. Currently the food stalls, craft beer, bar, café and grill are all open. Sadly the Newburgh Flour Shop, The Kitchen (which will be the sit down restaurant serving dinner and brunch on the weekends) and the market are not open yet. But, there's no mention of this on the website - they infer that everything is open. A bit misleading. Other than a nice bar area the stalls currently open are: Valley Greens (salads) Hudson Hopworks (craft beer) Smoke 33 (bbq meats) East - West (bao, ramen, dumplings) Cafe/Grill (Coffee, pastries, egg sandwiches, smoothies, grab and go like overnight oats, yogurt, cold drinks) Current opening Times are: Cafe + Grill 7am Food stalls 11am First I absolutely love this concept and it's a place I am excited about and would visit often. It's a bright colorful vibrant space with loads of stunning colorful murals and artwork both inside and out. The place itself is slick and very sexy, with perhaps an over abundance of neon, graphics, murals, mantras and messages that seem all too popular these days and quite a few TVs. It's a bit of a sensory overload. I mean those details can be nice but for me it's all about the food and the experience. There's also an outdoor area with covered seating and games and a take out window for the Hudson Hopworks craft brewery- BONUS!! I decided to visit early the first week they were open so of course since it's brand new I will cut a little slack. The customer service was on point. Friendly engaging helpful answering any and all questions or finding someone who could if the person didn't know the answer. The only thing open at the time I went was the café and grill. The food stalls themselves don't open until 11 AM, But I wanted to go early to beat the crowds. I had a flat white and a croissant. The flat white was very good, the croissant was subpar, not fresh. I know the pastries are delivered by the Newburgh Flour shop, which is normally top quality, but again I think they have to get the quantities right once things really get into the flow. I'm sure this will improve once NFS's dedicated space is finished and they can supply the pastries daily on site. One odd thing - I sat at the countertop on the right just before the bar for some reason the height of the countertop with the stools they have just don't work, either the countertop is too high or the stools are too low or a combination - it was very uncomfortable to try and eat there. The offerings at all the stalls, the market and the soon to be restaurant will all focus as much as possible on local vendors which is another reason that I plan to support them and come back often. Prices seem very reasonable too. I will be visiting frequently and working my way through the menu for all stalls and the other experiences that are currently open and will update my review whenever I do. PARKING: no real street parking available - there are two city lots one in front, one around the corner. Both charge an outrageous $1.50 per hour - so be prepared. Im thrilled to have this space in Poughkeepsie and wish them luck! They're off to a great start and can't wait for my next visit! read more

This place is a winner hands down. I have to come back because I want to try so much more than what I could order in one sitting. From the decor to the setup to the wine selection and balance in every dish, it's clear that the entire concept was carefully thought out and delicately crafted from the starts. Parking is simple and convenient with street parking right outside and a parking lot across the street. It wouldn't be a problem even on a busy Friday night. When you walk in, you're immediately greeted by the first of the food hall stations. But keep going back and to the right (there is plenty of signage) and you'll find the host stand for the restaurant. It's separated from the food hall from the bar, but in an open air concept, which brings a lot of energy into the space that you wouldn't normally get with a restaurant. The decor is so unique and IG worthy, especially in the bathroom. Seriously though, go in. It's awesome. We ordered wine, drinks, a salad, and 2 entrees. Honestly, everything was to die for. I expressed an allergen at the beginning and every single thing we ordered from that point was double checked for the allergen - even dishes that weren't mine because she knew we planned on sharing and stealing bites. I was most surprised by the warm shrimp salad. Even with a citrus base and picked peppercorns (which I'd never had before but we're SO good), I would categorize it as savory. It was a real culinary delight. Not to mention that the shrimp was perfectly cooked. I'd rate it a 4.5 out of 5. The only thing stopping me from giving a full 5 stars would be the service. It was very good, just not perfect, which is to be expected with a new restaurant that opened just a few weeks ago. Very happy to see this development in the city of Poughkeepsie. The space itself is large and cavernous, and for that reason it was quite loud when I visited. The outdoor space is great and has tables and umbrellas for your enjoyment. There are four restaurants inside as well as a full bar and beer joint. Deli, Asian, salad, and barbecue are your choices. So far I have tried the barbecue and the Asian restaurant called East - West. The barbecue was average but I enjoyed the Ramen and the kimchi dumplings from east-west. I found them to be well prepared and tasty. I would return to support this new venture. read more

Food was very good. Wasn't too happy that I couldn't see what was in everything as I have that issue where cilantro tastes like soap/foil to me, it blind sided me with the Asian food. Presentation was great! Staff was friendly and helpful! The food was excellent and it's a great gimmick to have all of these options. read more

My partner and I visited last night for the first time, and we had ramen. Parking was easy (lot right across) and it didn't cost us anything due to the later hour. We had ramen from East-West which was decent enough as well as banana pudding from the BBQ joint. What I liked most was the vibe of the space for the food hall. We plan to visit again and try the other places. It was somewhat empty when we arrived at 7pm but got busier as time passed. They're only open until 9pm so I hope they will have slighlty later hours on the weekend. Worth a visit! read more

Almost there...but needs some serious tweaking even though it's been open a couple of months. The atmosphere and design reminds me of cool Brooklyn contemporary mall and bistro design: brick walls, mood lighting, industrial feel. Nice! Food stations supply nice variety. I haven't been to all the food hall stations yet but I'm getting there. East West Asian cuisine is EXCELLENT. The charsiu pork is seriously restaurant quality. SMOKE barbecue is also great. Prices are reasonable, food tasty. But there are a few things that really need improvement: - The KITCHEN, a sit-down restaurant, is advertised everywhere but not open yet, only the food hall section. - At the food hall stations, meal production from ordering to getting your food is slow and clunky. Guessing there's only one person behind the counters because the place just opened, but it's NOT that cashiers aren't doing their jobs. All are friendly and efficient; they just need help and/or better coordination and training. - Would be nice to have a station for napkins, straws and utensils so busy cashiers don't have to be asked and don't have to remember to provide them. - The restroom signage is non-existent. You don't even know where it is! After searching around and finally asking someone, my friend and I found out that it's in a dark corner with zero signage, and black painted doors making it nearly impossible to tell which is the men's room and which is the ladies. Something awkward and/or awful is going to happen VERY soon if they don't fix this. - It's unclear what to do with your tray when finished. If you sit long enough though, someone will appear to bus your table. - Noticed that floor managers were a bit rude and brusque with staff. Not cool. -PLEASE LOSE THE OVERHEAD TV. I don't think The Academy is meant to be a sports bar. The atmosphere is sophisticated; the TV turns it into a TGI Friday's or sports bar. It's overkill. Love the music, though. Don't know if it was a radio station or their own mix but I was grooving while I was eating -- classic tunes! read more

This review is for the cafe+grill. Sorry, didn't try the food. I stopped in to get a breakfast sandwich. Spent $1.50 on parking. I asked about their sausage to get a sausage, egg & cheese. The Person behind the counter was annoyed that I asked; he said it "was sausage". I asked if there was spicy sausage. Again, annoyed- he said no. I asked to see the brioche buns- they were in a package, so they were not baked there and they were small-way too small to hold the 2 egg sandwich they proudly offer. The croissants also looked to be purchased, so I asked for 2 chocolate croissants. The counter person- again annoyed- went to the back, stating he had to check as to when they would be ready( they open at 7 and it was 8:30 when i went). After about 3 minutes, he came back and said they did not have any chocolate croissants today. I left with nothing. I won't be back either, as I'm not going to spend $1.50 on parking if there is the possibility I'll be walking ours empty handed again. Plus being treated as I shouldn't be asking about the food I'm about to purchase at a pretty high price won't get me there either. I'll go to the bagel shop down the street that appreciates my business. I might go back to try the other places, though. read more

I've lived in Poughkeesie for 40yrs and remember that this used to be the 'CHANCE' night club with fond memories. So I looking forward to the gentrification of this former hot spot. I was impressed with the format of the space inside and the variety of food menus and services. So lets get to the meat of my three start rating. If your charging me premium prices for your products they should match expectations. $14 for a pastrami sandwich that proportion's didn't justify the price. Awesome venue, though vendors fell a bit flat. Taco valley opened 30mins late, despite being told on arrival at 1150 that they open at "noon sharp". They were also out of many items. Tacos were good. Also tried the poke bowl which had a good flavors but the rice was hot which was just bizarre. Bao buns from East West were delicious. BBQ place was also sold out of products. I attended a 90's party here on August 5th and my friends and I were treated horribly. There was a drunk bartender who refused to serve us and when a second bartender came to assist she did not get the drinks correct. We were trying to get her attention to correct when the first bartender came back and instructed her not to serve us and then proceeded to throw a drink at us. When we retaliated by throwing drink back someone in the crowd pushed one of us. In the end we were kicked out, however not the person who attacked my friend was allowed to stay and no one listened to the fact that we did not start this. To be clear we were not drunk and the security did not listen to an independent witness who verified the events. I have to say this felt like discrimination and racism at the highest level and I will not be returning to this establishment. read more

I will never return to this establishment. I went out with some friends last night after dinner for drinks. To say it was a bad experience is an understatement. We stood there for 35 minutes and waited, waited, and not even a minute of their time was given to us. Actually I witnessed them taking shots, talking with people I assume they knew outside of work, and completely ignoring the whole bar. Unprofessional and rude. Everyone was waiting and looking at each other wondering why no one was being helped. I understand bars are busy and being a bartender is a challenging job but to completely ignore costumers and not even look after trying to get their attention is rude. Sad I have come here before but after last night I don't think there is any supervision of those bartenders but a free-for-all. read more

I've had a few opportunities to check out the hall. This review is specifically for East-West, an Asian counter with bao, ramen and a few other counter offerings. I really enjoyed the bao so much that I returned the next day with my daughter to try their ramen. The bao were fresh and tasty. The dough was springy and yielding, one stuffed with a pork filling that was reminiscent of a bahn mi sandwich. The other was a Korean crispy chicken. Both fillings were excellent. The next day's ramen were really quite good. Both of us are very broad minded when it comes to ramen and willing to forgive a lapse or two in a bowl. There was no need to compromise. The ramen was delicious. The shoyu has a wonderful salty broth and the tonkatsu had a delicate earthy flavor. Both came with tea eggs and yummy chewy noodles. The place, like all of the counters, is counter service only. Find a table in the well designed and comfy center hall. I look forward to our next encounter. read more

It was so loud with sports broadcastings throughout the building that I could not stay and shop/eat. I asked for them to lower the sound, but he only pretended that he lowered it. Please be considerate of those who can't tolerate loud noises: ppl w/hearing aids, ppl on the autism spectrum, ppl intolerant to loud sounds, ppl who are older.
