Terrific dinner at Shadows on the Hudson. I was there with my wife and kids, and the food, service, menu, and setting were all outstanding. My steak was a little undercooked, but otherwise everything was excellent and we had a wonderful evening. One odd footnote: I ordered a bourbon with a large ice cube and discovered a $3 upcharge on the bill. I've been ordering bourbon and scotch at bars around the world for decades and can't recall encountering that before. I wasn't bothered by the $3 nearly as much as the surprise charge with zero disclosure. Nothing on the cocktail menu. Nothing from the waiter. No indication whatsoever that asking for a large rock carried an additional charge. Charge whatever you want, but tell the customer before adding it to the bill. When I mentioned it, they graciously removed the charge, and I had a very pleasant conversation with a manager who understood the point and agreed it should be disclosed going forward. That's exactly how good hospitality should work. Excellent restaurant, excellent experience, and absolutely somewhere I'd return. read more

The first thing you're stuck with at this restaurant are the beautiful views of the Hudson River. The setting is amazing whether you're sitting inside or out. I found mixed results with the food. The flatbread appetizer and cheesecake dessert was very good. I ordered steak as my entree and the server asked if I wanted it cooked rare, medium, or well done. I asked for medium rare and she said they couldn't do that. What kind of high end restaurant can't cook a steak medium rare? I found the cut I received to be way too overcooked. If you're looking for a place with a great view, stop by. Just don't order steak. read more

Came here the day before a wedding at the Grand View, not knowing that the restaurant is the restaurant attached to the venue and that would cater the restaurant. After dining at Shadows on the Hudson, we were elated because we had a beautiful dining experience and were ready for the next day. Came here for dinner on a Friday night and the place was lively and busy. I loved how there were different vibes throughout the restaurant. There was the main dining room that over looked the water, where we dined, a more chill lounge type area as well as a private room - all stunning in their own right. Our server was Nico and he was great - giving us his honest recommendations - from my mocktail to my friends choice of port wine. I had the ginger mule mocktail which was 10/10. To eat, I opened for the classic Caesar salad with crispy chicken which was soooo good and the portion was absolutely massive. A bunch of my friends got the filet in addition to the salmon. We all loved our meals and were the last ones in the place - as the place closed relatively early for a Friday, at 9. All in all, we had a beautiful experience - I only wished it was day time for a view of the bridge - but we were lucky enough to see it next day for the wedding next door. A random road-trip stop at Shadows turned into one of the greatest dining experiences of our lives. We just wanted a solid meal with a river view after a long day on the highway. Instead, we found a culinary gem. The space is spectacular -- bright, open, and surrounded by relaxing river ambiance. We began our evening on the outdoor balcony, but a sudden thunderstorm dropped a tsunami of rain prompting a quick relocation into the equally welcoming main dining room. Our waiter, a charming young man from Hungary, gave us an excellent primer on the menu, which expertly balanced accessible staples with high-end luxury (creeping all the way up to an eye-popping $155 Wagyu steak special -- there were only 15 servings available for the night we later found out). As Port lovers, we were floored by the beverage options. Living outside of Philadelphia, we're used to restaurants offering one or two uninspired Tawnys. Shadows boasts an embarrassment of riches. Our waiter candidly confessed Port wasn't his forte and quickly dispatched the sommelier, Enrique. The fluid, passionate back-and-forth that followed was incredible; we learned more about wine in five minutes with Enrique than in decades of traveling. We gladly handed him the steering wheel for the rest of the night. Because we were celebrating my birthday, we went all in. My wife crossed caviar off her bucket list and tried the delectable octopus -- a substantial steak rather than the usual fried bits at most establishments. After some enabling from my wife, I went temporarily insane and ordered the Wagyu. As frequent diners, it was the priciest plate I've ever ordered, and it was worth every single penny. From the kitchen's flawless execution to exceptional hospitality that extended from the GM to the bus staff, the evening was perfect. Yes, we dropped a small fortune, but entirely by choice -- the menu accommodates nearly all budgets. We left feeling like we made out like bandits because the memories were priceless. We also got apps like the garlic shrimp and calamari which were delicious. Some of my friends ordered lobster tail, scallop, short rib gnocchi and seafood pasta. Oh WOW this place is beautiful. We came for lunch on a post-snowstorm Tuesday afternoon. After walking in, we were greeted by the host and the manager - both incredibly nice and helpful. Once we were seated at the bar (always our preference), I noticed that both the bar and dining areas are beautifully appointed. The bar's lounge area was very welcoming and the chairs looked like we could stay there for hours. We just might when we come back!! Our bartender greeted us with a smile and menus - from there, we ordered a Juice Bomb (IPA), and the Martini Rinaldi (vodka-gin martini). Let's just say I'm ruined for martinis forever and will ALWAYS want this martini. It's a perfect martini ... and I will fight anyone who tries to convince me otherwise. As far as food goes, we shared the Zucchini & Eggplant Chips. SO much food for just an appetizer (highly encourage sharing). Really flavorful chips, served with smooth tzatziki (nicely done!). Husband had the Bourbon Burger (lunch special). Properly cooked burger (med rare), juicy burger, good flavor, great ratio of burger to sauces/toppings, not overly messy but just right, and the fries were double-fried so they had that perfect crunch quality. I had the Crispy Chicken Sandwich (also a lunch special), and I have to say (again), the BEST chicken sandwich I've ever had. Beautifully crisped chicken, cabbage slaw, homemade pickles, chipotle mayo were perfectly flavored, seasoned, and balanced. It's like the perfect bite in an entire sandwich and doesn't leave your hands super messy. The sandwich is typically served with fries but I chose the house salad and it was a nice burst of freshness from a rich sandwich. That dressing is delish!! Overall... this was the kind of lunch that's WELL worth the 90 minute drive (because that's exactly what we did... haha). The Executive Chef (John Malone) is a talented individual and this place is a true Diamond on the Hudson. As a side note ... the real show-stopper is the views of the Hudson River. I was visiting for work and we selected this place. It didn't disappoint at all! The atmosphere lighting and staff were great for an evening dinner with coworkers. The food was also very good. They give you warm buttered rolls when you sit down with two different types of butter. It was very good. The views of the Hudson River and trees changing colors in the fall topped it off. This place is a train wreck from the start. The hostess spends her time with her back turned, covering her mouth and whispering instead of welcoming guests. Not exactly the first impression you want when walking into a "nice" restaurant. After being seated, we sat nearly 30 minutes completely ignored. No drinks, no hello, not even a glance. A manager finally appeared to announce the first round was "on the house." Great--free drinks. Too bad no one seemed interested in actually serving them. When a server finally wandered over, she didn't even bother introducing herself. She took the order, eventually dropped food that was bland at best, and then disappeared for the rest of the meal. Zero check-ins. Zero effort. The only saving grace? Gavin the busser. He was the one person who actually acknowledged us, tried to make up for everyone else's lack of care, and showed what service should look like. Honestly, he worked harder than the entire front-of-house staff combined. The views are nice, but you can get that anywhere along the Hudson. Everything else here is outdated, uninspired, and painfully mismanaged. I must have ordered the wrong dish. Based on the reviews the food is great. It was my first time there and I was looking forward to enjoying a great meal. I had the salmon and risotto dish. The salmon was tasty. However, the risotto resembled something that had been thrown up by someone. The taste and the look was totally unappealing. The mocktail was extremely sweet and the amount was very small. The server was nice. But we were placed by the door next to the terrace. It was very hectic with people going in and out. Shadows has a wonderful view and even a bar on their terrace to enjoy the grand view with a cocktail. It is upscale and the prices although high, are reasonable considering. I enjoyed their free herb buns with sun dried tomato spread. I also loved my Amaretto cocktail. The burger was cooked to perfection with some great tasty fries. The reason for the 3 stars is that my child's flatbread pizza came burnt and was inedible. It should have never left the kitchen. I even tried it and couldn't even take a second bite. Luckily we had other food to satisfy her. I also tried the gnocchi and I have to say, it was not good. Gnocchi is supposed to be smooth and be able to spread out with only your tongue. It was stiff and rubbery. But other foods came with praise so it's the luck of the draw. read more

The views and atmosphere are terrific! But the food is very average. There's a lot of seafood in the pasta so that was nice but the noodles just fell apart under our forks. The sauce was also not that great for both dishes. A good move would be to come here for the views and grab a light dinner, so you can eat elsewhere too. Alright, went here for my birthday. It's a beautiful overlook on the Hudson and seems like an attractive place to grab a standard drink with a nice view. That being said, you can get way way better food in this town. I looked at the menu and was underwhelmed, but when the bread came out I was sure (nothing special, two flavored butters only one of which had any flavor.) Then a hilarious moment happened because I had splurged on a high end glass of wine on their menu. My husband's wine came out but mine was... delayed? Huh. About 15 minutes later, my wine came with flourish and apologies. The waiter left, I went to sip and.... My $30 glass of wine is full of cork? I mean full. Good naturedly, I call over the waiter and send it back. Then the fun started. I'm facing the water and my husband is facing the restaurant and he updates me every ten minutes or so as the waiter comes out, looks anxiously at the glass, and changes his mind to return it again. It took about 30 more minutes for him to get it back to me (and yes, it still had cork but I just gave up.) I laughed and he said he took it off the bill, explaining that he'd never had the coravin do that before. Anyway. After I finished the darn glass we went to farmers and chefs down the street and had a much better meal. :) Come here for the view or a simple cocktail, and then go. read more

We were married at Shadows in 2007. Every year we come back for our anniversary. We used to come for our anniversary dinner but the menu prices just don't correlate with the quality of food so we started coming for happy hour. We just went tonight and had the same bartender as last year and he was exactly how we remembered him. Terrible. Moved in slow motion, asked for 2 dozen oysters, received one. Asked if we were ready for check yet we ordered drinks from him 10 minutes prior and were still waiting for them. Told him we got married 19 years ago, said nothing as he handed us the check. Still not trained properly. We will always come back because it's about us and we won't let poor service ruin it but man it seems to be the norm. But what I did not like when I went recently was the such high prices, the bland food and the weak mixed drinks. The staff is great. The place is beautiful. The Bronzino was as plain as possible. The truffle mushroom cavatelli somehow lacked flavor, as well as size (small portion which I guess was not bad in this case). I actually am pulling for shadows to do better as there are so many good things about it. Ideas...get chef who is innovative and wants to make tasty meals, get bartender who makes $16 drinks that have alcohol in them, lower prices to reflect real life costs. So tonight, wife and I decided to have our annual Christmas eve dinner here.... Got here and was seated promptly but by a family of 8 with several unruly and uncontrollable children.... I should have asked for another table, but they were packed. Everything went OK until the appetizers came.. My wife ordered an apple walnut salad with manchego cheese... the salad came drenched in vinegrette with no cheese nor walnuts... my wife sent it back... it came back with no dressing, no cheese and no walnuts... server said the chef said cheese is not part of the appetizer, even though the menu says so... Thank God for the Sommelier Enrique, who took charge and offered my wife lobster bisque instead. Clearly the chef didn't know what was on the menu... Mind you, this whole time, the unruly kids are screaming, running around the tables, crawling underneath the tables, including ours, with the family doing little to nothing, all in full view of the staff. Main course came and it was delicious, but hard to enjoy with the constant screaming from the kids and running around. Final straw was when the kids started to pull on my wife's jacket as we tried to enjoy desert... I finally said something to the family, who looked at me like I had 3 heads... How dare I mention their children's behavior... I asked for the check and the waitress brought the general manager. My wife described her issues and then I explained mine with the unruly children and the poor ambiance. I informed him I'm a law enforcement officer who has to work tomorrow so this was our Christmas night. I akso explained the management needs to have a policy that of the family cannot control the children, then management needs to address it, not the nearby guests. He was sympathetic but that's all... He agreed that we should not have had these issues, but Merry Christmas.... smdh.... what was once a long looked forward tradition has ended and we will not be going back... The staff is welcoming, attentive, available ( but not hovering!), and fun The food was outstanding tonight , tho one concern of the filet mignon being "well done" when ordered " med rare". Four of us had scallops, one had a grilled/ blackened chicken salad ( easily substituted from the menu's " Crispy Chicken"!!), the Mexican Street corn, served on 2 1/2 cobs was delicious, the crème brûlée absolutely disappeared! And the peach ice cream dish was spectacular !!! And then there's the stunning view of the Hudson We eat here fairly regularly, and our only concern has been the noise levels for the elders in the group! Came here for a pre-theater dinner. It was a bit stressful, as none of the restaurant staff seems to communicate. We told the following people that we were on a tight time schedule: the person on the phone taking the reservation, the hostess when we arrived, the person serving water, and the server. Each party did not seem to pass the message on to the next party in the succession of service. If this place is attempting to be a fine dining establishment, they should implement the communication practices of a fine dining restaurant. When we arrived, it took a while for our table to be set, despite having a reservation and despite having a reservation before 6pm. The person serving water didn't communicate our urgency with the server and it took her a while to come over. I finally flagged her down and she took our full order. She didn't seem to communicate with the kitchen, because we checked in on our dinners after a long time and reminded her that we had to leave in 15 minutes. She came back saying that half the dinners are ready but half will be out in 5 minutes... A concerning response, because it meant half the dishes would be dying under the warmer before the rest were ready to expedite. All these minutes add up quickly. We had 10 minutes to finish our meals before we had to leave. When the food arrived at the table, it was clear which dishes had been sitting under the warmer. Half of us really liked our food, the other half thought it was okay. The scallops were great, the ragu was salty, and the French dip sandwich was okay. We also didn't like the bottle of wine we ordered. Some great things about this place: the location, the décor, great setting for a fancy dinner, plenty of tables with a view, plenty of parking, and we were able to catch the sunset. First off if they had a six star rating I would do a six star rating on this place. We arrived by Boat. The docs were easy the dock hand was excellent. He even went as far to offer to pick up Dunkin' Donuts for us on his way in. You look up the hill and see the restaurant shadows overlooking the Hudson River. It's an awesome view. My girlfriend a.k.a. the wife always been known as my better half or so I've been told by my daughters, hiked up the stairs. And it was worth it what is you. Shadows reminds me of being at some high-end country club that I've had the opportunity dinner at. Peggy felt but she wasn't the only one. The manager stop by. Wanted to make sure we're going to have a good meal. Our captain ordered soup and chicken. Ordered the chicken salad. And I ordered the scallops with wine sauce. But, before the food came we ordered the Bluepoint oysters and drinks. Home run. The oysters were fresh and very tasty. Hard to believe I didn't used to like these things but they are awesome. The restaurant is very well staffed has a nice bar area everybody was very pleasant to be around. It'd be nice if we lived in the area but we don't. When we come back through in the fall this will be a must stop. I bet it'll read more

My wife and I were traveling for our anniversary and were not quite sure where to have dinner. We were very happy to have chosen Shadows on the Hudson. This restaurant offers a very intimate dinner setting. Dim lighting and a view of the Hudson set the mood. The food and drinks were great! I had a well made espresso martini and a fish special (sorry I don't remember which one!). We also treated ourselves to oysters and a charcuterie board. Our waitress did a great job too. If I lived nearby, I would definitely return periodically. Also I was grateful that I could get a "happy anniversary" message drizzled with chocolate sauce when dessert came out. Nothing crazy, ice cream and chocolate cake, but it sent us home happy. read more

This was a beautiful restaurant that I really enjoyed visiting. The scenery is beautiful and I loved seeing the bridge against the sky as I ate. It is very spacious with indoor and outdoor seating. The menu is expansive with a decent selection of appetizers and entrees. Our waiter was very kind and helpful to our group, and did a great job suggesting dishes to try. We ended up trying the Buffalo and Fried Calamari and Hummus for apps and the Duck Breast and Thai Lamb Curry for entrees, both of which were the specials of the day. We enjoyed a side of Mexican Street Corn. We finished with Jane's Lavender ice cream and Triple Berry Cheesecake and Jane's Cappuccino ice cream for dessert. The Fried Calamari was delicious and well battered but the Buffalo Calamari was absolutely amazing! It was well flavored and tender and just perfect. I highly recommend it! The Hummus had roasted red peppers and was very filling and tasty. The Duck Breast was well done and soft and tender. The sauce flavoring was mild and delicious, and I loved how well it paired with the smokey taste of the breast. A really great dish! The Thai Lamb Curry was interesting as I've had Thai curry before but never with lamb. It was decent and I enjoyed the gravy. I wasn't too fond of the lamb but it wasn't a bad dish. If you're feeling adventurous, I recommend giving it a try. Otherwise, you can try a safer option like the chicken breast or rack of lamb, which others in my party tried and enjoyed. The Mexican Street Corn was very tasty and was a nice side. It tasted exactly like corn with some extra flavoring thrown in. It was delicious! The desserts were delicious and perfect! I loved loved LOVED the lavender ice cream. It was very light and floral and paired perfectly with the Triple Berry Cheesecake. The cheesecake wasn't very sweet and I loved the berries. A very mild and satisfying dessert! The cappuccino ice cream was delicious as well and tasted like a cup of coffee! It's perfect for any coffee lover. We enjoyed a Pineapple-infused Cosmo and Jamaican Sunset for drinks. Both were good but the Jamaican Sunset was wonderful and is a very popular drink at the restaurant. Overall, this was a great spot and I recommend stopping by if you're in the area. It has great spots for views and pictures and has very yummy food. Dish contained No asparagus, shrimp was over cooked, fettuccine was dry and had no white wine butter sauce, or chili flakes. Dish was NOT Spicy as indicated on menu.
