First, the office setting does NOT evoke the feel of a highly successful practice. When I met with Dr. Joen, she proceeded to tell me that my insurance, Anthem PPO, only covers $50 a visit, although I was told that I was covered by insurance and only had a $20 co-pay when I scheduled the appointment. I asked what the $295 consultation fee that she recommended and other extra charges would do to make me feel better, and she told me wants to focus on my whole body and health and acupuncture would not do accomplish that. This was only after viewing my tongue and checking my pulse. I wanted an explanation of what the greater services would provide and she couldn't tell me as that meant she was consulting and that would cost more. Although I am fortunate enough to afford whatever the cost, she told me that I must be poor, as rich people don't care and most of her clients are rich based on where her office is located. She said she services the poor and devotes time and free services around the world and kept telling me that everybody loves her. Unbelievable. I should have walked out when she insulted me, but I was curious. There was a Catch 22, as I wanted more information to make a decision about committing to more services and to see what she was trying to sell me countered by the fact that she wouldn't tell me more as that meant a consultation. She provided her services although reluctantly. She forgot about me being hooked up to a machine that I believe lasted 3 times longer than it should have. After one day, I am experiencing no benefit from her services in making my back and neck better. This was my first acupuncture experience. I will try it again, but with a very different practitioner.

She will transform your mindset after one visit. Dr. Shakib and her staff (Desiree, Carolyn, and Lex) have been incredibly warm and welcoming. It doesn't feel like a dreaded doctor's visit, but more of a fun and challenging wellness session that leaves you and your body feeling rejuvenated! You can tell that the staff really know what they're doing and that they truly care for the well-being of their patients. They are very passionate, knowledgeable, and highly skilled at their craft. They curate each session to the patient and there is a specific focus each time depending on how you've practiced and any personal issues impacting you (ie stress, work, exams). There is a high level of trust and I'm never afraid to voice my concerns or give feedback with Dr. Shakib, Desiree, or Lex, which is important as it helps them improve each visit. Every session is very hands-on. I like to ask a lot of questions and comprehend everything we do. Sometimes, we supplement them by watching videos or looking at diagrams, which makes the concepts easier to process since I am more of a visual learner. The staff will guide me through the exercises and movements, making corrections and offering encouragement. By the end of each session, I have a great understanding of the concepts, why we practice certain exercises, and the goal of the exercises. I've become more self-aware about how I am using and positioning my body and its impact on enhancing my wellbeing. And I love that I learn something new out of each visit. It's important to note that the result will come gradually and will only work if you're willing to put in the effort. Communication with the office is excellent. It's very easy to schedule an appointment and they are very accommodating to changing schedules. With the pandemic, the staff has done an excellent job separating the patients and allowing time in between appointments. Also, we can text when we arrive and Carolyn will give the go-ahead to come on in when the office is ready for us. Great way to minimize contact with other patients. It's never too late to start preventive care! Even my dad ("Age is just a number!" and "All you need to do is change your mindset" was what it took to convince him) started his sessions and could see the improvement in his mindset and posture. In this technological age, we need to maintain healthy postures and habits as more of our work and activities involve sitting behind a desk or utilizing electronic devices that force our bodies to fall into unnatural positions.
