I was a member at the Alaska Club for several years. While its much higher than you will ever pay for a gym membership in the lower 48, it seemed worth it since there was a location near home and one near work. After they changed ownership I started to see subtle differences that were not to my liking; the free weight area getting smaller, lame exercise classes added, and a ridiculous in-your-face marketing campaign. But hey, whatever. What really changed my opinion of this place was when I canceled my membership. Back in May I called them, confirmed what I had to do to cancel, sent an email to accounting to cancel at the end of June. My email and call were ignored and I ended up paying to the end of July, and this is where it gets bad. They saw fit to tack on a bunch of extra charges to my final bill. When I tried to get these taken off I was given the endless run around. The accounts manager Becky never returned my calls and subsequent late fees began to get added on. They finally agreed to reduce this new amount by half which is still more than I originally owed! Ridiculous. read more

I'm a visitor that has come for years once a month and paid $15 each time-one day pass. Over the past 6 months I've been treated so poorly I had to finally post something. I've been told "you're not welcome here" and "we don't honor one day passes". My work reimbursed me for a one day pass so that's my only option when I travel. I've explained it each time when they hound me for a membership. I don't need a membership! I just need one day to work out. Well, today was my last. I was told that their "open gym day" (whenever that is) caused members to complain and so I'm no longer welcome. I explained my situation with travel and work and no dice. Sir, you're still not welcome. So I asked, "so because you guys offered a free day to lots of people that somehow punishes someone who wants to pay $15 for just one day?" Word to the wise, don't go here. I've seen and heard lots of hard sells and you'd be better off paying slightly more anywhere. You guys need a lesson in basic economics. read more

Well, I'm done with The Alaska Club. I made the mistake of purchasing a Groupon for tanning pre-vacatio (I was already a member). 4 front desk people, 3 forms and 3 phone calls (spread out over 6 weeks) and I still couldn't get cleared for a tan today. Ridiculous. First world problems, I know, but I paid good money for a membership there and this was an add-on for me. It wasn't worth the time, the savings, and certainly not the hassle. (Not to mention embarrassment). My membership is up, I'm canceling that, too. Too many add-on expenses, I feel nickeled and dimed. read more

This gym had better staff 11 years ago. The female the showed me around the gym didn't seem to really have a clue, she did however work hard to try and convince me. The 2nd time I saw it the woman that signed me in fed me bullshit not realizing I had visit a couple days prior. That was flat out annoying. read more

This review is for the WEST location, which is located right next door to the Alaska Club for Women. The main difference between these clubs the West is open 24 hours and open to both sexes. The club for women closes at 9pm and shockingly, only allows women. I've been training at the West location for a month and am very happy with the facilities: there is a personal training studio where we never have to wait for weights or space. The cardio machines work well most of the time and West has one of the few indoor basketball courts in Anchorage. However, there are several issues: for the last couple months, their hot water and AC has worked only sporadically....not cool for someone who works out in the morning and needs to shower before work. I believe they have rectified this problem in the last week. Also, I am surprised this is one of the few clubs in Anchorage that actually does not have whirlpools in the locker rooms. I have to go to the Women's club for that. And, they should remodel the locker rooms like they did at the East location! read more

The Alaska Club is the closest thing than Anchorage has to a deluxe club, but anyone from anywhere else in the US who has paid $100 a month for a club membership will recognize the facilities for the third rate horror that they are. The hot tub on the women's side is typically filthy, with a crusty handicapped chair in the corner. The steam room has an old hose in it that you have to spray at a temperature gauge way up on the wall to get more steam to come out (and anyone on that side of the room gets a cold spray in the face). The gratings are slimy. The showers, every time I have gone in there, have been full of hair. The lockers are...lockers, just sliiiightly too skinny for a gym bag so you have to shove it through. They have the same ones at Planet Fitness. Oh, but the women's side has wooden doors so that they look slightly nicer. The equipment is okay if you "work out like a girl", aka use a treadmill and low weights. They have tiny little kettlebells in the women's gym and the co-ed gym...if you do any kind of real cross training, they're kind of insulting. The good part is that the freeweights are ALWAYS free, and that side of the room tends to be pretty empty. Also, no smelly dudes. But it doesn't come close to adding up to the price tag. The club for women has limited hours, so if you like to work out late, it doesn't matter that you pay a high premium for the women-only gym you have to go next door to the 24 hour co-ed gym. They recently renovated the co-ed locker room (which it needed *desperately*...the ceilings in the shower were a filthy industrial horrorshow) so you had to use the locker room on the women's side. Of course, the women's side isn't open 24 hours, so if you went later on in the evening...screw you, no locker rooms! Did I mention that this meant that all the people with cheaper memberships were free to use the locker room on the Women's side of the gym? Yay for them, SUCK for those of us who paid for the luxury. I finally went to their office and asked to cancel. The girl at the membership desk said I needed to call accounting to cancel. I called accounting and they said I had to physically fill out and snail mail or fax in a cancellation form, and oh, there's ***SIXTY DAY CANCELLATION POLICY***. I missed that in the fine print. So yeah, it doesn't matter if you cancel now - we're charging you for the next 2 months anyway! :D I have every intention of disputing every charge that comes in, and may file a small court claim if that doesn't work. An extra $200 is not a ton of money, but it's not chump change. More than that, it's about my indignation at their loathsome swindle. Avoid at all costs unless you have no taste and money to burn. read more

I'm not a member here but I came to a birthday party for one of my son's friends. I was surprised at how big the kids area is and delighted that my son (and all is friends) had a blast playing on the equipment. We had to pull them away for cake and then they were all back to play for the last 30 min. This is a really cool place for a kids party. read more

I have been a member for almost 2 years and all that time payed for a personal trainer. Finally met my goals and tried to cancel. They stated that they were sad to see me go and said they canceled. Next billing sure enough there was another month added plus late fees. Called back in again, again they said they would take care of it. Next billing sure enough its there again and another month tagged on plus fees. I appealed to them to remove it. They stated that they will have to take it to upper management who then stated they will not remove it and I must write them a letter to cancel the account and then I was obligated for even another month of bills. I did this but they seemed to tag on even more charges. All said and done it took me three months to close this and $800 to close this. Stay away from the Alaska Club. Very dishonorable, very criminal if you ask me and total horse you know what. WARNING, THEY WILL NOT CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT UNLESS YOU WRITE IN AND BE EXACT TO THE CONDITIONS OF THE CONTRACT FOR CLOSURE. I have worked in the fitness industry on the customer service side on a managerial level. I have a pretty good understanding of what club staff deals with, and what members deal with as well. Those factors in mind, I also have a realistic idea of what expectations to have of a business like this one. This is the first gym I have ever paid this much for, so I'm very disappointed that I have had such a bad experience. I'll share this before I get into the negative aspects, because I think that's fair. I initially signed up my boyfriend and I paying about 300 a month for memberships, and "good life" packages for both of us. It included a membership to most of the clubs, a small discount on products, and amenities like unlimited tanning, spray tan, hydromassage, and one free massage/training session/facial a month for each of us. As far as the good I experienced, some of the employees were pretty pleasant and helpful, but I noticed more bad than good when it came to the professionalism of the front desk staff. Some of the trainers have made an extra effort to say hello, and seem very professional and courteous. Particularly a mid 30s blonde at west. Here comes the not so good... My boyfriend and I have free gym access on base, so he hardly used the lifting/cardio equipment. I'm not close to base, so I prefer the convenience of a gym on town. I kept him on the membership so we could enjoy the massages together despite the fact that he hardly used it. The massage is decent, depending on the therapist, but It's very difficult to get in to get one when you want to which was the incentive for getting the perks I paid for. They also charge 35 dollars if you miss a massage, or call to cancel within four hours. If it's a free massage, why don't you just count my massage as used and move on? Oh..that's right...they want every possible penny. When it comes to the facilities, for as much as they charge, things are not maintained nearly as well as they should be. Some of the equipment is old, and it's inconsistent between locations (considering the various sizes of certain clubs). The tanning beds rarely have the cleaning products they need and they're dirty most of the time as if they haven't been swept or vaccummed. Additionally, another thing that frustrates me is the inconsistent hours between all of the clubs. Some are 24 hours, some are not. This company will nickel and dime you, as if they don't make enough off of their expensive memberships. If you join, make certain that you read ALL of the fine print on how to cancel your membership (relocating etc.). Paying this much was once worth it to me, because I liked the idea of having so much in one place. Unfortunately, that has changed recently. I had foot surgery in June and will be having another as soon as I heal. I asked to place a medical hold on the membership mid-july with the medical documentation from my surgery which states the details of the surgery, date, and that I am not to put weight on it. The billing manager at the west club told me that was not acceptable and that I needed an actual letter from my doctor. The VA is who I get my healthcare through so naturally, anything they do takes FOREVER. I requested the letter even though I was frustrated with the lack of common sense. I am in a cast, with paperwork that says exactly what my doctor would write in this letter. About a week later, I still had no letter from my doctor so I called back and was told again that I would be billed for the month of August if I could not get a letter. That's two months of being billed about 200+ dollars when we haven't used the club once. They also told me they would backdate the medical hold once the letter was received. But I would only receive a "credit" not a refund. Useless. I called another club (south) to speak to the staff member who signed me up about the issue, and she was able to put the membership on medical hold immediately. Interesting how one employee could, but a manager wouldn't. The south employee also informed me that if my medical documentation indicated that my healing process would prohibit me from using the gym longer than my contractual obligation, I could cancel it immediately. Initially I was willing to stay with Alaska club because I liked the convenience of having a membership even though I had to justify paying so much each time I saw my bill. I wanted to try to use it for upper body once I was able, if I was able. Once this happened, I changed my mind. It was bad enough that they wanted to charge me 25 dollars a month to heal properly. Isn't this a business that caters toward health and wellness? Alaska club, you need to get organized, and work on practicing professionalism, and compassion for human beings. Perhaps a little common sense might help too. I'll never do business with this club again once my membership is cancelled, and my 500 dollar "credit" is refunded. I'd rather pay less for a gym that doesn't offer as much. read more

I am disgusted and horrified at the customer service here at Alaska Club West. Does Alaska Club even train their staff members to understand the true definition of what good customer service is? One staff member in particular, Cherie (the operations manager), needs to be reprimanded for her nasty degrading behavior. The treatment my mother received a few days ago was vile and disgusting. How dare you yell and kick out a woman who just got out of the shower without letting her blow dry her hair. She pleaded with you to give her time to quickly dry her hair but you wouldn't let her. Have you been outside? It's freezing cold. How dare you watch her like some criminal as she got dressed and gathered her things. You yelled at her while she was butt naked. You didn't have the decency to let her put on her clothes privately but watched her as she got dressed. Are you serious?! How dare you call security on her when she was not causing a disturbance. Even the security guard didn't escort her out because he didn't see her as such. This was over what, a missed payment? If your staff would have done their research properly in the first place, they could have easily seen that the bill was paid a few days prior to this outrageous incident. Alaska Club treated my mother like trash even though she has been a loyal member for several of years. If this is a reflection of how Alaska Club treats their members than I would highly suggest finding another gym. This type of behavior was unwarranted and could have been handled differently. Cherie did not apologize to my mother even though she was in the wrong. I am deeply saddened and upset to have heard this happen to my mother. No one should ever have to go through that sort of treatment. Ever. It was demeaning, ruthless, and completely unnecessary. The Alaska Club is by far the best gym I've been to! I primarily go to the West location. They have a ton when it comes to variety and quantity of equipment. Their staff is friendly and very helpful, if you have questions there's almost always someone available to help. They have tanning and massages. Also nice you can just charge food or drink to your account. read more

The Alaska Club is overpriced in general, but that usually happens when a company like this holds a near-monopoly. The West Club is dirty and staffed by people who are either obnoxious or oblivious; take your pick. Because this was the closest club to my house, I joined the Women's club next door. This involved additional expense for a club that closed early, was under constant "remodeling" while I was a member, and allowed facilities to remain broken for extended periods of time. When I was told that fixing the steam room was "on the list" I decided to cancel my membership. A limited hour club that charges over 80 bucks a month should not have facilities broken for weeks on end. There is always the choice of going next door, if you want to sit in a petri dish and take a steam. All in all, Alaska Club is in dire need of real competition in Anchorage. read more

I went here to do a trial pass and based on how rude they became when I said no to the actual membership, I will never be returning. They disregarded me saying I run, go cycling, and take dance classes for my exercise and made me out to be some fat lazy slob that sits in front of the tv all day. In fact, they even said "you need to think about your health. Do you really want to just watch tv all day?" I am in Alaska for work off and on sometimes for a few months at a time. Last year I took advantage of their 3 month membership which was about $85 per month. At this point In time they weren't offering that package but I'd heard they're offering month to month now. I go in, tell them I'm in a rush and would like to find out more about the pricing of a month to month. The girl says she wants to give me a tour, I tell her again that I've been a member and I don't need a tour as I'm in a rush. She says "I wan to show you something real quick" as she manipulated me into a pointless waste of time tour. Then she says "let's talk I'd like to get to know you". I once again tell her I just want To know the price. She then forces me to answer all these fitness goal related questions. I swear to Jesus Herbert Christ I felt so disrespected. I was IN A RUSH. Just tell me the price! Turns out a month to month is like $131 per month for access to most the clubs in town which is what I wanted since I work all over. I was like "what?! It's $131 PER MONTH?" Then she tries to tell me to commit to a year and I can cancel after 6 months. I probably won't even be here 4 more months. What a rip off. They definitely offer the nicest gyms but I don't even pay close to that for all club access to 24 hour fitness in California and these Alaska Clubs are nowhere near as nice as a 24 hour fitness ultra sport. Wow. I get the high prices to keep the riff raff out but dang, not insanely high prices. Not getting my business. read more

Let me count the ways... rip off is the first thing that comes to mind. The "special" they ran in February wasn't special at all. I opted in even after the smoke and mirror presentation didn't quite make sense. The lovely gal had me sign a cancel letter at the same time so there would be no additional charges. Well, guess what? I had to pay MORE and now that I am questioning the bill, and disputing with the credit card company, I learned that they charge a $20. consultation fee (whether you ever talk to anyone besides the sales person or not). I never once saw anyone wipe down or clean one machine either. Overpriced for sure but I wanted a women only facility and my hairdresser recommended it. Never again. read more

I've been a member of Alaska Club for several years, and kind of liked it in terms of the gym: close to my home, open 24 hours, relatively clean. Overpriced, but not bad. The problems started when I tried to add my underage niece who is under my official guardianship to my account. It's been more then three weeks now when I send my official papers to them.. I am calling several times a week, and they always say that the managers cannot decide whether they approve it or not. Every time they promise to get back to me but never do that. These guys are so slimy!! Say whatever they can to get you to sign up and then they are nowhere to be found when you ask them about. Originally spoke to a guy named Josh then when I went back with more questions almost felt forced to sign up by the light haired girl(can't remember her name)and she guaranteed me that as long as I cancel in 90 days that I'll only have to pay the monthly fee for 2 months. Even asked about the annual fee since I'm only trying you guys out for 3 months. "You don't have to worry about any of that cuz you are initialing where I'm telling you about the 90 cancellation." Well guess what fee and numerous others I'm being charged with now. Don't bother with this place and definitely don't believe a word they say about the 90 cancellation. These guys could use a heck of a lot worse word than slimy, but that gives a good idea of what you'll be up against if you go in. My husband has been a member here for 2 years and we have been bringing our special needs son to the play center during that time as part of the benefits his father is offered by his (very expensive) membership. There must have been a change in staffing within the past year, but I have watched as the quality of and courtesy shown by the front desk staff go from notably polite to positively abysmal. In particular, there is a brunette young woman working up front who acts as if she's the hostess of some exclusive NYC hot spot - calm down honey, you're not quite as high and mighty as you think you are. Management, take note of the attitude of some of your newer front desk staff - I had long been on the fence about joining the club myself, but the recent negative experiences I've had with your front desk have effectively laid to rest any inclinations I may have had to join this club. read more

So, I went back to this gym to really give it a try. There aren't a lot of gyms here in Alaska that offer child care, tanning, classes, and more. Once I understood what Alaska Club has to offer, I signed back up. I am happy that I did. I go to the gym EVERY DAY. They keep the gym clean. I am able to take advantage of what my membership offers me. I was once a detractor of this place and now I'm a promoter. read more

I have been nearly hit in the parking lot twice in the last month, including today walking from car to door. There should be traffic slow sings at the parking entrances. Half the people who come here sound and act a bit like gang hoodlums--maybe there could be stronger membership criteria, and many of the men's locker handles are smashed--those should be replaced immediately. There are some new weight machines and the staff are great. For the price we pay, it should all be top shelf. read more

Been a member for 15 years and have seen a dramatic decline in all there gyms with respect to equipment, cleanness, and towel service. For the amount of money you pay each month, the services are poor and the locker room very dirty. West was good but now very dirty, and showers horrible, and needs cleaning and updated. Midtown very done but equipment bad. East was redone, but the equipment is fair. South is okay but it's like being a high school. I've been sent to collections!? Nice gym, nice staff but I didn't know the higher ups managerial or whom so ever decided it was okay for SHARKS to be in control of money decisions. I've been called multiple times from someone from finance. They give zero cares about you and only wanted to know if and when I was going to pay my bill. I had. Cancelled my card because I cancelled my account. You have to do there requirements to cancel that's 1) 20 or 25 keycard checking 2) write them a nice letter telling why you wanted to cancel your account (which wasn't negative) 3) do their fitness test or trial whatever you will. I had completed all and got that done yet money was still being drawled from my account. I WASNT ANGERED AT THE TIME. I just simply took advantage of the situation and canceled I card I had on file for that account. Then weeks go by and I get a notice in the mail that I owe the Alaska club $560. So naturally after that letter calls started coming in and this women. Wasn't understanding my situation didn't give me any chance fairly back myself. There isn't an alternate route I can take. I told her what I had done and she said and I quote "if it's not in the system you didn't do it" and "that's how this works here" I like the it's like Judging a book by its cover. I've been an AK Club member off and on since the late 90's and I have to say that I love the Women's Club! The staff are friendly and very helpful. The facilities are clean and the decor is beautiful. Working out there is an enjoyable experience whither I'm in the mood to push myself hard or it is an easy day. All this considered, the biggest sell for me was the amazing play center. The staff there are wonderful and my 3 year old never gets bored in with the numerous slides and the ball pit. read more

I was a member of the Alaska Club for almost 8 years. The day after I was told by my doctor that I should not use the facility, I notified the business office but was unable to terminate my agreement unless I gave them 30 days written notice. I faithfully paid my dues for years, even when I was unable to use the facilities for extended periods of time.. Except for a clause in the contract that required a 30 day written noticeI on a contract that I had signed eight years earlier, I owed them nothing. The Alaska Club does nothing for it's current members once you have signed a contract but they offer all sorts of incentives for prospective members. Thankfully there are now other alternatives in Anchorage and prospective member should consider them. I know of at least 5 members who intended to terminate their membership but return when they were able to do so but like me will never do so. read more

I love the variety of classes that are offered, and the various times. I'm not an early morning or evening exerciser, so I appreciate the mid morning choices! The locker room updates are amazing, they were worth waiting through construction. My only complaint is the cardio room could use some attention. A few unmarked, out dated, broken machines and the ventilation is horrible. It's either steamy hot or unbelievably stinky. Even a handful of fans along the walls I think would really help. Other than that I love being able to go to the Alaska Club and do something good for myself!! read more

I love this club! The sales manager, Bobbi, is absolutely amazing; she is very informative, always there to answer your questions, and has such a positive attitude. Everyone here is extremely friendly and ready to help you. The Alaska Club West has something for everyone as it has free weights, cardio, weight machines, basketball court, private stretching area, classes, tanning, child's area and the Women's Club. The club itself is immaculate and I especially love the Women's Club. The Women's Club has free weights, stretching area, machines and cardio. There's always someone there to help you out with the machines or if you have any questions. The women's club locker room has a hot tub, sauna, steam room, tanning, massage, and cable TV... It's basically a mini spa. I couldn't ask for a better experience at this gym and I would definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone! read more

Horrible customer service and no regard for members. I came to Anchorage as a seasonal employee staying only for the summer and explained that when I came into Alaska club west. They first tried to sell me on a membership that was in excess of what i had described i wanted. Reluctantly he showed me a lower level, less expensive membership option that still included more than i needed. I reiterated my need for a membership just for the summer he assured me it was better to complete the membership and then submit a moving notice to terminate the membership rather than be a month to month member. I was required to do one session with a personal trainer. He was nice enough but then tried to tell me I had scoliosis. Unless your trainers have a medical degree they probably should not be telling members that they have scoliosis. Then I came to the end of my summer and went in to try to cancel my membership. First of all you can only talk to the department via phone or email and not in person. Also, it turns out that you have to be a member for at least 6 months before you can cancel for moving and you have to give 30-60 days written notice. I suppose I should have read the fine print on the contract more carefully but I had specifically asked when I signed up if I could cancel anytime and he had said yes as long as i did one personal training session. So i was frustrated that i would have to paying membership fees for months that i was not even going to be living in Alaska. And then, they would not accept my class schedule as proof of move saying that it did not indicate that i would be moving more than 40 miles away. Clearly geography is not something these employees understand as my class schedule indicated I would be at the Seattle Campus at University of Washington (clearly more than 40 miles away from Anchorage). My all around experience with the employees here was horrendous and I felt completely taken advantage of as a customer. I would highly recommend NOT joining this gym. read more

I'm not the greatest fan of this particular place, other locations are better with nicer machines. Machines are limited and this particular location is cramped in space compared to other locations. The stretching room is overly cramped and not enough space for stretching (3 mats laid out) with maybe 10 other machines around it makes it hard to move around. Custodians are nice, so are front staff members. But overly priced compared to even 24 hour fitness. When we first signed up, the manager who signed us on seemed to be confused with what our plan was. He said we can only go to 1 gym and not to any other Alaska Club because that's what we paid for and he also had us call customer service to verify. Customer service told us which membership we had and we questioned him but he said they were wrong and it prob haven't updated on their side. So, we got annoyed and just shrugged our shoulders and didn't bother. I later found out from friends the amount we are paying is way too high to be limited to 1 gym. We instead found out we were paying for the membership where we were able to go to ALL gyms with additional perks that we never even used. After maybe 8 months of paying for this crap, we spoke of customer care and cancelled. We started paying for the right membership (which is still well overpriced). It was at least $90 extra every month we saved from the family plan we paid almost $200 for. read more
