The Allies Pub in Downtown Chico.
    Wulfstan C.

This is a lovely British-style pub in downtown Chico, and as far as we know the only place in the region serving hand-pumped cask ale. The place itself is lovely and very nice. It has nice, comfortable decor with some comfortable seating as well as more traditional dining tables. There is also a nice patio area outside under shady trees, very nice in warm weather. The location is great, downtown but in a quieter street just off the main business core. British cask ale is our favorite kind and it's nice to find a place area which makes and serves it, something which is very rare. The beers themselves are somewhat uneven in quality, but some are very good. We found the Freedom Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy cask to be the best of theirs and it is very good. London Calling is a pretty good lighter English pale ale. The food we have had is excellent. The Bangers and Mash plate with gravy and peas is excellent (5) stars and the Scotch Egg is also very good (4.5). They have a nice salad with great dressing (4.5). They get a bit higher score for having four cask pumps and ale. Service is good, very friendly and well-run.

Very cool find in downtown Chico! Modeled after a traditional British pub, the building itself is beautiful. The Allies Pub also brews their own beers too offsite! Pretty impressive. I got a tasting flight for $11.75 since I love being able to sample the different types of beers! I tend to like lighter beers and really enjoyed the Barrage Ballroom which is a honey blonde ale. The menu is very British serving up everything from Scotch eggs to various pasties and pies. We had just eaten so we didn't get to try any of the food however. What drew me in was the impressive patio space with heat lamps. While it was winter, the heat lamps took the edge off and with the lights in the background it felt very festive indeed! Highly recommend this spot.

Love how cozy this place is. We ordered the Shepard's pie and the chicken pesto salad. Easy to order at the counter and they bring your food out. Everyone here is super friendly. Love that they have some table games to pass the time. Fireplace was on when we visited, I could see myself bringing in a book next time.

What a neat place! We have heard good things about Allies Pub for a while now, but didn't have a chance to try it until recently (ya know... 2020 things). We came on a Friday night for dinner and drinks and we were so pleasantly surprised with how much we enjoyed everything! We were open to trying new things when we decided to finally visit, which I think is necessary if you've never had British food or are at all picky. We tried "the cock" pasty and "the fisherman" pie. They were both SO good! The chicken in the pasty was so tender, and curry was the perfect addition. I was a little skeptical of the pie with shrimp, salmon, and white fish, but it surpassed my expositions by FAR! My hubby had a blonde ale which was really good and I had a cab sav which grew on me. We are so happy we branched out and tried this place! All the employees were really nice, did their specific jobs well, and we loved the beautiful patio. Surrounded by brick, heat lamps, fire pits, and good company. Love the mellow vibe of it!

Comfort food and a cozy setting. Perfect for a rainy weekend outing. Great that you can reserve a table for dinner.

Ask the Community - The Allies Pub

Do you make fish and chips?

Hello! We do not serve fish and chips, but our menu is available online on our website www.TheAlliesPub.com and click on the menu tab. Hopefully there are some other lovely traditional British Pub Grub items that you would enjoy! Cheers 😁

    Is there a happy hour?

Hi Mary! We have a dice game available between 2 and 6pm, one roll per pint of beer and if you roll doubles of anything that's how many dollars you get off your pint 😉

    Are children allowed?

Yes, well behaved children are welcome at the pub but do not have special accommodations (high chairs, kids menu etc) for children

    Is Allies kid friendly?

    Definetly.

I was fully expecting some but it was perfect meat. Well flavored and perfectly cooked. Not only did our server give us the best advice, she also sent us out the door with a refill of iced tea. In this heat, that is so kind. She probably saved me from dehydration!! We had the nicest drive back to the Bay Area. We talked about coming back with our manly men. They would love this place. Chico is just as nice and less expensive than the Bay Area. I recommend visiting this lovely restaurant and brewery. I would have had the beer but I can't mix alcohol and heat that I'm not used to. The copper accents are beautiful and the seating was comfortable. Unfortunately, it was super busy so I would recommend sitting outside for a more romantic and private ambience. My blackened salmon tacos were delicious and we cleaned off the plate within a handful of minutes. I really loved the pickled onions on the side and the crispy outside layer of the salmon pieces. Shout out to our server, kaylee for giving us as much attention as she could, despite the business!

So if I was basing they review on food alone it's an easy 4 to 4.5 stars. Service was lacking. I arrived first and took a small table in the very back corner. When the waiter came by I let them know I was meeting a friend I hadn't seen in over a year and we were planning a long lunch. It was a Saturday afternoon and not busy. My guest arrived and the sever didn't come back for at least 10 min. But ok. No biggie. We ordered a soda and an iced tea. When those arrived we ordered food. My tacos came quickly and then we sat, looking at my food while we waited for the other entrée, the burger. 10 minutes later it shows up served by another server, no explanation or even acknowledgement that it took 10 minutes between me being served and my companion being served. Anyway our server was MIA for the rest of our stay. No offer of a refill for our beverages, no asking if the food was ok. Nothing. We stayed about 2 hours total and my normal policy is to double the tip because I have taken a table for about twice as long as normal. Unfortunately service was sub par. Oh and tea was incredibly strong not in a good way.

The brewery is outside of downtown on a huge campus. Public free parking is covered and nearby, you can see the employee entrance and all the brewery buildings beyond. The restaurant & bar entrance is closest to the parking (see separate review), but there's so much more to see on your visit. For beer fans, the highlight will probably be the taproom and merchandise shop in the farther building. It definitely felt like the employee bar, with many clearly finishing shifts for a beer before heading home. It's a small bar, but has an amazing tap selection including some not available to try anywhere else. They have small tables too, which overlooks like the tour entrance area and merchandise store. It's huge and there's a ton of swag. You can also get all their fresh cases and special bottled selections to go, again including some not available elsewhere. The name pretty much tells you exactly what you're getting, and thankfully they're really good at both. The burgers are the main event. There are enough options that you can switch it up every time, although I usually end up staring at the menu for way too long just to order something similar to what I always get anyway. The fries are great alongside it, and obviously having a good beer with everything doesn't exactly hurt. The atmosphere is another reason I like this place. It's lively and casual without feeling like they're trying too hard to manufacture a "cool" restaurant. You can come in with friends, grab a burger and a beer, hang out for a while, and nobody is rushing you out the door. Service has always been friendly and pretty on top of things, even when they're busy. And considering how packed places like this can get, that deserves some credit. It's definitely not an everyday kind of meal unless you're trying to personally keep the beef industry afloat, but when you're craving a real burger, Burgers and Brew is hard to argue with.
