The Allies Pub in Downtown Chico.
    Wulfstan C.

This is a lovely British-style pub in downtown Chico, and as far as we know the only place in the region serving hand-pumped cask ale. The place itself is lovely and very nice. It has nice, comfortable decor with some comfortable seating as well as more traditional dining tables. There is also a nice patio area outside under shady trees, very nice in warm weather. The location is great, downtown but in a quieter street just off the main business core. British cask ale is our favorite kind and it's nice to find a place area which makes and serves it, something which is very rare. The beers themselves are somewhat uneven in quality, but some are very good. We found the Freedom Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy cask to be the best of theirs and it is very good. London Calling is a pretty good lighter English pale ale. The food we have had is excellent. The Bangers and Mash plate with gravy and peas is excellent (5) stars and the Scotch Egg is also very good (4.5). They have a nice salad with great dressing (4.5). They get a bit higher score for having four cask pumps and ale. Service is good, very friendly and well-run.

Very cool find in downtown Chico! Modeled after a traditional British pub, the building itself is beautiful. The Allies Pub also brews their own beers too offsite! Pretty impressive. I got a tasting flight for $11.75 since I love being able to sample the different types of beers! I tend to like lighter beers and really enjoyed the Barrage Ballroom which is a honey blonde ale. The menu is very British serving up everything from Scotch eggs to various pasties and pies. We had just eaten so we didn't get to try any of the food however. What drew me in was the impressive patio space with heat lamps. While it was winter, the heat lamps took the edge off and with the lights in the background it felt very festive indeed! Highly recommend this spot.

Love how cozy this place is. We ordered the Shepard's pie and the chicken pesto salad. Easy to order at the counter and they bring your food out. Everyone here is super friendly. Love that they have some table games to pass the time. Fireplace was on when we visited, I could see myself bringing in a book next time.

What a great pub this little gem is! They don't have much on the menu but what they do have is 100% authentic UK, pub food. I ordered the bbq pork pastie and it was flaky and savory. Great portion sizes. I've heard that the shepherds pie is awesome as well!

Comfort food and a cozy setting. Perfect for a rainy weekend outing. Great that you can reserve a table for dinner.

Ask the Community - The Allies Pub

Do you make fish and chips?

Hello! We do not serve fish and chips, but our menu is available online on our website www.TheAlliesPub.com and click on the menu tab. Hopefully there are some other lovely traditional British Pub Grub items that you would enjoy! Cheers 😁

    Is there a happy hour?

Hi Mary! We have a dice game available between 2 and 6pm, one roll per pint of beer and if you roll doubles of anything that's how many dollars you get off your pint 😉

    Are children allowed?

Yes, well behaved children are welcome at the pub but do not have special accommodations (high chairs, kids menu etc) for children

    Is Allies kid friendly?

    Definetly.

So what I did the next game I told myself I'm definitely stopping there. Once inside it's super nice and very spacious. They have a beautiful restroom it's all pink with a huge wall art you could tell they payed attention to detail. Even the bathroom ceilings have wall art on the ceilings. Don't forget to look up next time . The inside consist of pretty much 3 areas. There is one big room. It looks like it was more like a private room. There's a little section on the way to the bathroom that has this beautiful tree with lights when I looked close enough there was a little monkey hanging on one of the tree branch . Then they have the other area once you first come in that it's near the bar overlooking the outside with the big windows . Last but not least you cannot forget about the massive patio with its own huge bar with a massive TV in the middle. It's just a very great space. The food was really delicious. Their menu is pretty massive. I was trying to decide what to pick.. I went with a Rancher burger cooked to my liking which was so perfect for me . I upgraded to the black truffle fries . For drinks my favorite was the lavender one so refreshing. They have a nice Happy Hour every single day pretty sweet right ? The service was excellent from the beginning to end . I could tell this is the locals hang out spot and I see why . The prices were very reasonable specially with the generous portions . Can't wait to go back when in the area .

We had kids with us, so we got there an hour before it became 21+. Everyone was friendly, the food came pretty quick relative to how hopping it was. We ordered: Pho-rench dip (w/fries)--I think this was a DDD sandwich, so it's not some hidden gem, but it was super tasty. You cannot go wrong. The slight lime-iness of the dipping broth really kicked it into turbo. Also, we all likes the steak fries--a note on that later. Chicken Cheese Steak (w/fries)--my wife loved it. I tried a bite, and it was great--a little mushroom-forward, but we like that. Mac and Cheese--do not be fooled by the slightly smaller bowl, it is very filling. My son can eat his birth weight in pasta, and he had to tap out! I tried a bite--it was creamy (not grainy at all), and was just the right amount of salty and cheese-funky. Grilled cheese and tomato soup (w/fries)--perhaps the least successful for my family, but only because my daughter prefers a smoky/spicy tomato soup, and this was more on the sweet side. The griled cheese was of the "crispy cheese on the outside" ilk, which my daughter thought was really good. So, totally would go again. IMPORTANT NOTE (to people traveling through Chico, or who don't want to take leftovers)--the sandwiches are pretty big, and the add-on fry order is also sizeable. If we were going again tomorrow, we would either order 1 fry instead of 3. Or split a sandwich. Very very good pub.

The brewery is outside of downtown on a huge campus. Public free parking is covered and nearby, you can see the employee entrance and all the brewery buildings beyond. The restaurant & bar entrance is closest to the parking (see separate review), but there's so much more to see on your visit. For beer fans, the highlight will probably be the taproom and merchandise shop in the farther building. It's a small bar, but has an amazing tap selection including some not available to try anywhere else. They have small tables too, which overlooks like the tour entrance area and merchandise store. From the moment you walk up, it's got that classic brick and wood feel that says you're about to eat well. Step inside and you're greeted by a wall of taps that feels like a beer lover's playground. The place hums... great music, good energy, and a staff that's clearly in rhythm with it all. We didn't mess around with the order. My daughter went with the blue cheese burger special, her boyfriend took on the bacon jalapeño burger, and I went straight for the pastrami burger. Every one of them came out looking like a culinary masterpiece. The blue cheese had that perfect balance... bold but not overpowering as they are want to be. Her boyfriend said the bacon jalapeño brought just enough heat to keep things interesting without stealing the show, probably too weak for me ;). My pastrami burger was a heavyweight... stacked, savory, and the kind of messy you don't even try to clean up until you're done. Think Katz deli melding with a west coast hip scene burger. Now let's talk onion rings... because these deserve it. Golden, crispy, and just the right crunch when you bite in. Not greasy, not soggy, just dialed in exactly how they should be. Add the garlic sauce and now you're playing a different game altogether. That sauce is not optional, it's essential and fabulous on everything. The beer selection is deep, the kind where you stand there for a minute pretending you're making a thoughtful decision when really you just want to try everything. Service was on point from start to finish. No waiting around, no chasing anyone down... just attentive, easy, and done right. Only downside, and it's not really their fault, is parking. Downtown Chico can make you work a little for it. But once you're inside, with a cold beer in hand and a burger staring you down, you won't care how far you walked. I will be back, it is well worth the money.

Burgers are "meh", and my only reason for going back is that they have an ok lamb burger, which I haven't otherwise found north of Sacramento (where there are much better lamb burgers). The place is absolutely filthy. Greasy fingerprints on every surface that could possibly display them. Spill residue and trash everywhere. There's absolutely no way that my wife would eat here. She hasn't been there in years, and now would turn around and leave as soon as she saw the place. Looking around while eating, I couldn't finish my meal, and I left. And I'm pretty easy. I like dives, but not filth. I don't think that this is meant to be a dive, AND it's progressively become a s******e. And, all the while, the "manager", who didn't appear to "manage" anything, except for conversation and passing out free beer samples to his buddies at the bar (one of whom was clearly, from their banter, a fired former employee), did nothing else but gossip and bitch about higher management, while the employees also had multiple free beer samples, and stood around and chatted with each other. While the environment grew even more disgusting. Shouldn't these people be trying to at least keep the the place presentable, if not really clean? Isn't this a regional chain? I'm sure that no one from Sacramento has been here recently. I don't like to see a business fail, but this one deserves to.
