This is where you can buy tickets for the boat to see the rapidly-receding Portage Glacier. I highly recommend doing the short, rewarding, Portage Pass trail instead: https://www.yelp.com/biz/portage-pass-trail-whittier They also sell grab-n-go style cafeteria food. It's decent in a pinch, but I recommend getting food in Girdwood on the way over instead.

We always stop here for a fast snack - ice cream and apple pie - they have an extensive gift shop that makes a wonderful walk around and window shopping.

Fantastic little place! I am so glad I stopped in! The gift shop was amazing. I was going in to grab a cup of coffee from the cafeteria, and ended up dropping a bunch of $. Great gifts, clothes, and unique items. I have not seen some of the same stock in the various stores that I have been in. Great Jewelry as well! The cafeteria is misnamed! I think they should advertise it as a cafe. I tried the reindeer hot dog on a sourdough bun, it was great. Tasty, and different. The fries were fresh and HOT! While I was there, someone else got a cinnamon bun- oh boy, I wish that I would have tried one, they looked amazing!

Just a short walk from the Portage Glacier visitor center (summer only) and an easy hiking trail to nearby Byron Glacier (spring to fall).

Absolute worst meal we had in Alaska. We had the halibut fish & chips and their halibut…read moresandwich--both were mediocre at best. Halibut breading was flavorless and the filets were a tad thin (especially since halibut tends to be on thicker side). Sandwich bun was cold, untoasted and dry. Fries were hot and decent. The most lackluster meal we ate all week. To make things worse, neither employee (there was a male and a female working) was able to help with directions. We explained that we were at the Anchor Inn and were walking over, the female said, "Look for the ice cream shop and we're right there, you'll see us." No context, no landmarks or other objects to note, but needless to say we passed them -- not as easy to see as she made it seem. Then we called and spoke to a man, he said, "Just walk to the end of the turnabout and you'll see us right there." Huh?! Whittier may be small, but we're obviously not from around here and neither of those directions made any sense -- especially for someone who is not local and does not know the area. Needless to say we finally stumbled upon them, with zero help from either of their "directions". We had 30 min to eat and catch our train, which added to the frustration of this experience...to top things off the food was barely mid, lacking in flavor and just plain boring. To the team at Swift Water: Take more pride in your food preparation. There was only 1 other couple in the place, so it wasn't like you were rushed and cut corners because of being busy (which still would be an excuse). Do better.

Delicious cup of clam chowder and warm and friendly interior on a rainy, blustery day. Nice place…read moreto sit and take the chill off, chat with travelers, and have a bite.
