Food: The food was good. My fish and chips were well cooked and arrived piping hot. My husband's chicken fingers were flavorful and the fries were stacked high. The consensus between us is that we would go again if we wanted decent bar food. It isn't the best bar in Wichita but it does scratch an unusual itch. Service: 3/5 The service was just ok. Our server was young and inexperienced but nice and willing to find out the answers to our questions even if they didn't know themselves. The section of beer was impressive and extensive. Ambiance: 3/5 This is not quite your typical Wichita bar, it felt a little more zany, more current, more like a bar you would see in a larger city. This was welcome and also a bit off putting. I understand that it's permanently closed, I just want to make this quick and simple. Back in January 2020 before the pandemic even started, I was at least was able to visit, at first, it was a typical bar and grill, but later after the appetizer, the main course is where things got even uglier, when I've ordered the fish and chips and the onion rings, I just had to tell that everything was store bought. The onion rings had the same panko garbage breading instead of the usual smooth battered texture that I would prefer on onion rings, notice a smooth texture of the batter of the onion ring instead of the rough texture of the breading of the onion ring is because the panko breading of the onion ring make these onion rings look like something you can get at the store, the fries were extremely soggy and the fish fillet looked and smelled like Gorton's fish fillets I can get at the store for cheaper, the service is good though. Back in December 2022, I've tried to reconsider my dislike on it, but this, it was unbelievably nightmarish, from the restaurant having almost no light making it look like a haunted house as well as even more poorly prepared food, only this time I was able to order a grilled cheese and whole fried okra, the appetizers such as the fried pickles and whole fried okra were good, the grilled cheese however, not at all, how do you screw up a grilled cheese, soggy bread, soggy bacon and the same soggy fries, I just had to tell they've had no choice but to shut down this place for good back in April - June of this year. I really wanted to love this place but I honestly decided not to. Notice two stars instead of one or zero (If possible) is because I felt bad for the people and the owner who had to deal with the bad changes they did to the food and menu. read more

So glad to have the Anchor back open. I have fantastic memories about this spot dating back to when Shane opened it many moons ago. I like the new layout for the most part. I probably would've gone with a brick half wall down the center to stick with the historic look versus the diner style drywall half wall, but that's just me being picky. The menu has lots of the old favorites. My buddy had the brat burger and he says it's worth fighting over. I tried the ad Astra fish and chips. There was a little issue with the doneness of my fish but the batter is kick ass and Shane made it all right. She's a rockstar The tap beer selection is still top-notch, one of the best in Wichita. Last night, a friend and I went to The Anchor. I had not been back since the remodel was complete. To start, they did an awesome job opening up the restaurant and keeping it classy. Very comfortable environment to visit in. Next up food, I kept it simple since I wasn't very hungry. My order was a bacon cheese burger. Cooked exactly how I requested and with crisp bacon. Fries were also perfectly crisp. Now, the service. I don't even know how to rate our server. She was off the charts good. She was friendly, helpful, and interactive. Her advice was spot on. The Anchor is a vibe for sure. Very casual and relaxed. The soundtrack took me back in the best way. They have a full bar, although the beer menu was speaking to me the night I went. I tried a local saison from Hoppy Gnome - so good! (I'll try to get to their place next time I'm in Wichita.) My friends also tried several other beers and all seemed pleased. The real star for me was the Mac and cheese. Our server told me the pasta was handmade and you could tell how much love went into it. The sauce was cheesy and complemented with peppers and onions. I'm lazy. If I write a review it's bad. I love that their beer menu is huge, except it took six beers to find one they actually had. I don't know how you mess up fries but they were undercooked and underwhelming. And the spicy cheesesteak had no spice and barely any cheese. I never leave half the food on the table but I didn't feel like throwing it out at home. The one redeeming factor was the service and a sympathetic waitress who should find another place because this one is clearly going out of business. read more

I've been a few times in the past few years. This was the first time since they reopened. Week 6 soft opening to be exact (per their board haha). It was a Friday night and they were busy! Packed. We were told it'd be maybe 30-40 minutes. But several people had left their name/number and never answered so I think we only waited maybe 20 minutes. Started with their jalapeño caps. Always so good. Nice and spicy. Their tap list is HUGE now. I had the Bomb. It's a dark amazing sout. I could drink it all the time. Nice and sweet. My husband tried one he didn't care for and then another, I don't remember the name but I believe it was a stout by Boulevard. And it was delicious as well. I could easily hang out at their bar to have a few beers and an app. Their menu is a lot bigger than I remember. So many options. I ordered the Mac & cheese with buffalo chicken and blue cheese. Wow! Their pasta is made fresh. It was just perfect. And such a large serving. I was able to have leftovers! My husband got their burger that's basically a brat/sausage patty with cream cheese and roasted jalapeños. I of course had a few bites....its like a jalapeño popper burger. It was fantastic. I'm not entirely sure what happened to this place since the last time I went. A lot has changed. So for the past year or so I've been on a quest for the perfect Mac and Cheese. Mostly limited to Wichita, but i travel for it occasionally. My first visit to this place was great! Excellent Mac that topped my chart for quite some time. They had these house made Radiatori that held the cheese perfectly, and the cheese was also really good, if a little thick. The atmosphere was pretty standard for a bar, but still neat. The remake was pretty cool. It was nice to have a little change of pace. It continued to be great until my most recent visit. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the heat. It seems their AC was broken, as it was quite hot in there. We had a decent spot, but then came the service. It was pretty slow. We ended up waiting a while for our food to be ready, and when it was, boy, was I disappointed. The first thing I'll mention is that my parent's food was good, according to them. My Mac, on the other hand, is a different story. They hadn't changed the menu, but they had changed the Mac n' Cheese. First thing I noticed was that the pasta was not the radiatori they pride themselves over. They were shells, which was really disappointing because the Radiatori was my favorite part of the Mac. The cheese sauce was really, really thick. It was like eating oobleck. When my mom tried to dip a fry in the sauce, the fry bent. My mom also noticed that they had removed the Salmon BLT from the menu, which she was very disappointed over. My Dad's chili was not heated all the way through, but it was tasty. Stopped here for lunch. This restaurant is located in a nice area of Wichita which looks to be old stores and warehouses that were remodeled and used for shops and foodie fun. I really wanted to try a pork option but alas, I was not super hungry and opted for the Mediterranean salad. It was good, not great, and filled the craving. Being a crafthouse, I had to give a beer a try and opted for a usual fav, left hand milk stout. Husband had pulled pork and homemade chips with French onion dip. I, of course, had to sample. It's was great. Anyone have a rule like me...no one at the table can order the same meal, just in case someone wants to try a bite of someone else's dinner. Sometimes the fam gets annoyed and breaks the rule but for the most part, it makes us order some diff things. Anyway, I digress... I loved the atmosphere. I really don't like leaving bad reviews but this is warranted. My family and I walked into the restaurant and were greeted. The host informed us that it'll be 10-15 minutes to be seated. We were confused because the restaurant was basically empty. Our waitress was nice. The service was extremely slow. It took about 45-50 mins for our food to come out. The appetizers were cold and the food bland. The fries had seemed like they were sitting out. We're from Texas visiting family and were extremely disappointed. Most of the food was left on the table. 1st visit: Sorry there are no pictures, we dove in before thinking about it. Had the salmon BLT and sweet potatoes fries on the recommendation of Tyler, our awesome server. My colleague had a mixed green salad with the Roasted Mac Attack, at the recommendation of the host. He was a delightful young man who said he "couldn't even really stand to talk about it because it was so good!" He was right! Added a glass of Malbec and a Blue Moon to accompany the deliciousness. Great local place with eclectic decor and a relaxed vibe even though the food was elevated. Would highly recommend! 2nd visit: decided to return for a second night in a row while in town for conference. More things we wanted to try on the menu. Went in on Friday at about 12:30. We told the server we had 6 adults and three kids. We were immediately turned away because we couldn't be "accommodated" with a party of that size. We would have waited longer for the food or ordered the kids early to help stretch things out but were not even given the option. We visited The Anchor for their pastrami sandwich, since my husband is a pastrami connoisseur, based off the reviews/googling best pastrami in Wichita. I assure you, it is not the best or even close. Service was slow, I believe they were short staffed, heard that the food runner was also the cook. The manager, we overheard being rude about a customer with a service animal. Sandwiches were skimpy, flavorless, & dry. The pastrami was thick cut, gristly, & flavorless. We were so bummed to waste our time & money here. We ended up throwing away the food. As we left we heard several customers warning incoming customers about the wait & slow service. Would not recommend, the QuikTrip has better food!! read more

I wish I hadn't ever gone! I remember how good the Anchor USED to be. I wish I still had that memory. Instead I am left with the most disappointing dining experience. We arrived at 4:50pm on a Saturday. There was a 15 minute wait. No big deal. We get seated in an almost empty restaurant. Maybe four tables were occupied. The waitress stopped by soon after seating to say she will be right with us. That was a lie. We waited at least 15 minutes before she came back to get any sort of order, let alone our drinks. We ordered beers and food at the same time because at that point we had time to study the menu, and provide a full dissertation on the menu. Queue the long thirsty wait for two beers. Thirty minutes later we got our beers, except the waitress and bar staff didn't bother to open the bottle one of the beers came in. I would have asked for an opener if the waitress ever came back. Luckily we did get silverware, so the beer got opened. Without any sort of update, check in, or drink refill for an hour and fifteen minutes, we had to stop the waitress after all surrounding patrons had complained about the lack of food and service. We asked to pay for just our beers, which was more than what was deserved, and the pressure of us walking was enough for our food to finally appear. $72 for two sandwiches, two beers, a kids meal, and service led by Casper the ghost. We had the meals packaged to go; who has the patience to be at this place any longer. Our meals were mediocre at best. Sweet potato fries weren't any better than I could have gotten at Bionic Burger. Sandwiches and a Kid's chicken tender drier than my mouth before the beer arrived. 0/10 would recommend to a friend. 6/10 would recommend to a serious enemy, but I still would feel bad knowing the experience they were about to have. P.s. I forgot to mention, "there is no manager on site," or at least the manager is too cowardly to apologize for the complete and utter lack of respect the owners have for any sorry patron that walks through their doors. Do yourself a favor and grab a hotdog that's been on the roller grill at QuikTrip for one hour longer than it was stamped for. Your money would be better well spent. read more

I'm not writing this because I wanted to be that guy and leave a bad review, I generally am just happy to be eating at a restaurant and having an adult beverage. It was empty when we arrived at 5pm. Somehow it took like 12 minutes to figure out where to seat us. The service was....odd. They took 2 drink orders at a time and walked away. So ordering drinks took about 3.5-4 trips from the server to get everyone an order. My wife ordered an on tap margarita that took 57 minutes to arrive. From the time we ordered to the time the food arrived was about an hour (it's burgers, fries and wings, not Michelin star white tablecloth type fare). It arrived cold so I assume the server just sort of forgot the order was up. The wings and burgers were way overcooked which is legitimately hard to do. My club sandwich was fine, not great but hard to mess that up. The beer was cold and the check was fast so that was a positive. Was disappointed because I used to enjoy The Anchor a lot but probably won't return. 1/5. Not great. read more

I love going to the Anchor, sometimes they get really busy. Then you have to wait, but usually not that much of a wait. The noise level gets really loud when they are busy. But when they are slow, it's an nice quit place. They have trouble when you ask for certain things to be taken off your meal, and trying to get your fries unsalted it's like an uphill battle. The rest of your meal gets cold and usually most everyone in your party is finished with their meal by the time they get the fries the way you want them. Why can't restaurants get your orders correct, where you can finish your meal along with everyone in your party? Most restaurants are the same way if you have problems with your meal. I am picky and most times I have to take most of my meal home wit me. read more

Absolute best mac n cheese I've had in a long time! I went to The Anchor last and ordered the haystack burger while my mom ordered the mushroom mac and cheese. We decided to share and wow I'm so glad we did! Don't get me wrong, the haystack burger is amazing but there's just something about that mac n cheese that's just phenomenal. It has so much flavor and I love the addition the spinach provides. My dad ordered the buffalo mac n cheese and loved his as well. Our server was also amazing and made sure to give us plenty of time since it was our first time and their menu can be a little overwhelming. Overall 10/10 and I can't wait to go back and try some other menu items (probably more mac n cheese). read more

Well. I found Wichita's finest. My first choice burger had sold out but I opted for the pastrami and there are many New York delis who would be jealous of this sandwich. Hand cut fries are solid that pastrami sauce should be bottled and sold and the beer menu is amazing, diverse and served up by great friendly staff at cheap enough prices. Just like a previous reviewer, I dined here 2 nights in a row. Had good experiences both night. The first night I sat at the bar and was being served by multiple people. Started off with an order of the house made and french onion dip. Chips are my weakness and they were good. My main meal consisted of their "Meatloaf". These were 4 meatballs on a bed of mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were a little cold unfortunately. The "balls" sort of got better with every bite. It was different. I probably wouldnt get it again. The 2nd night was equally as good. Sat at a table this time. The service was spot on. I didnt have any appetizers this time. I did order the salmon BLT with a caesar salad side. This was a great sandwich. Perfect size for the salmon. The bacon was great. And one usually cant go wrong with a caesar salad. My only disappointment was that they were out of ice cream sandwiches and they didnt have the dessert popsicle I wanted. Maybe that was a sign that I didnt need dessert. Overall good experience. Literally THE BEST pulled pork sandwich I have ever had - and I get pulled pork everywhere I go if it's an option. I liked the feature of personalizing the sandwich. I had mine with cheese, crispy bacon, fresh jalapenos, and put it all on a pretzel bun. I would drive the 7 hours back to Wichita just to have this sandwich again - and I will. I LOVED IT! We also had a few drinks including the lemon blueberry smash ($7), the Cherry Lime Ale ($9), the Blackberry Shandy ($7), and the Citrus Jargarita. I tried the Jargarity last and I'm sad about it because it had to be one of the best margaritas I have ever had. This restaurant is doing something right. Keep it up!!
