I really wanted to try this place, based on all the positive reviews. I checked in on Yelp on a busy Saturday night, and arrived with my party of 6. We quite visibly arrived with a very active 3 year old that at times sat on the hostess' counter so I could keep her from running amuck during the long wait. After they sat a walk-in group of 6 ahead of us, I herded my crew down the street to Public - where we had a wonderful meal. Looking back at past negative reviews, they are mostly about the service. That was also my experience... food? Dunno. Service? Bottom tier. The place was busy. I checked into the waitlist on Yelp from our hotel @5:50 with an expected 38 minute wait. We arrived around 6:05, and I spoke to one hostess and said we'd take any open tables including outside. She said it would be a 30 minute wait. We were worried that it might not be good for kids, but several other groups waiting included kids. Our 3 year old was excited to explore, and got away from me several times. Since she wanted to see everything going on, I sat her on the top of the hostess's stand, and held her there, asking how long it would be, and joking about getting some food to occupy this danger magnet. People waiting ahead of us got tables and freed up the benches by the front window, and @6:25/6:30 ish we moved over out of the way. I continued to stand controlling the girl. At some point a different hostess took over. By 6:45, there were several open tables and a few we thought could be pushed together. We got hopeful. THEN... a walk-in group of 6 plus a high chair came through the door and got those tables pushed together to sit immediately.... um... I got up, and went to the counter to figure out what was going on. The new hostess said we had not checked in. I think we were the only ones waiting for a table, at that point. She must have thought we were a group that just hung out in the front of restaurants for fun. I pulled everyone up from their seats, and took them down the road to Public. I have to say, it was a MUCH better experience at Public. We were able to slip into a couple tables immediately, and had a great meal that included popping outside to watch a live band playing. read more

Lots of beers, mostly IPA's, Imperial IPA's and Stouts. 2 wheats, 3 Saison, and a couple others. Their food is ok. Service is ok, they need more staff on the weekends. I don't blame the servers, it's a management thing in my opinion. I could be mistaken. Either way, service was lacking terribly on a Sunday late afternoon. I'm in Wichita for work this week and someone told me "You can't go wrong with The Anchor." For the most part they were right. I absolutely love the beer selection. Tons and tons of local craft brews. I was especially drawn to the beers brewed right here in Wichita. I tried two pale ales and a stout which were all excellent. I went with the chips and queso for an appetizer. Honestly, I've had better queso and the chips were a little stale (maybe undercooked) but either way not really impressive. For my entree I went with the bartenders suggestion. I asked for something they were know for. Her suggestion: The Poutine Haystack which is an open faced burger, piled with fries, white cheese curds and beefy poutine gravy. Oh. My. Lord! So delicious! I've never had poutine but after tonight it will not be the last time I've had it. The service was outstanding!! read more

Average pub prices: the veggie burger was $12 with a side, the salads were $9-$10 before meat, sides run $2-$6. PROS: Very friendly staff. Fun atmosphere. Seems like a great hang out spot. Open later than other Wichita restaurants. Burgers are reportedly awesome (courtesy of my meat eating friend). Fun variety on the menu for omnivores (German sausage burger, for one!). Didn't rush us even though we arrived within an hour of closing. CONS: Veggie burger and salad were duds, so the healthier options don't seem up to par with the rest of their offerings. read more

I loved The Anchor so much I ate there 2 nights in a row when in Wichita for business. The menu is diverse but not overwhelming. First, you are greeted by the most charming of hosts! The first evening I ordered the Mac n Cheese (recommendation from the aforementioned host) and a side salad. The Mac n Cheese was as exceptional as promised. It was creamy and had a good amount of peppers and bacon. I could not stop eating it. The salad was delicious and fresh. Last night I had the Steak Frites. The steak was cooked perfectly and was delicious. The hand cut fries were amazing and plentiful. The service both nights was warm and very responsive. The staff gave great recommendations. I will definitely return next time I am in Wichita. read more

I enjoyed the vibe inside of The Anchor. Right off the bat though the hostess wasn't the most pleasant I've met. She was somewhat rude about us not having our entire party there but it's okay I can look past it! We sat down and ordered and all was fine. This was my first time coming so I had not expectations. Apparently the skinny fries are very well known in the city but on this particular day, they were testing out thick fries and everybody in the place threw a fit. I didn't see one person that wasn't severely disappointed. Probably safe to say they should go back to what they're good at. I got the veggie burger and it was very yummy. No complains from me other than that the ratio of patty to bun was a bit off. There also wasn't a waitress around often so when I ran out of water I waited for quite a while to get a refill. Okay...... I've been here for lunch and had a great meal. BUT...... Came here for dinner on a Saturday night and had a horrible experience. First of all, We were here for almost 2 hours and saw the server four times..... Appetizers came quickly and so did our drinks but it was ALL downhill from here. It took over an hour to get our food -- the manager said the fryer was backed up. LOL people came in 30 minutes after us and left 20 minutes after us -- and they all got fries. Why in the world the manager would make up this ridiculous excuse is beyond me. This entire experience was a joke. They took off $12.80 from the bill -- employee discount. WOW!!!! Had the wings. They were good the sauce was unique to their restaurant as far as I could tell which I liked. I liked it. I got the really HOT on the side just In case. Being from Texas there are Hot sauces that the average human being can't consume. I Had a salad it was good also. Wait staff were good after we warmed up a bit. Pricing was good. Drank a couple double Jack Daniel's on the rocks. The pour appeared to be an ounce and a half each which is a fair and average pour. Over all it was good. I've had The Anchor on my foodie list for a while since I moved to Wichita a couple of years ago. Last night I finally was able to try it and overall incredibly disappointed. When we arrived the restaurant was probably only half full so no big deal to wait 15 minutes. We were seated, waters provided, had an excellent appetizer of fried pickles that came out quick but then that's where all the issues began. Several of the alcohols on their drink menu were not available to which our waitress mentioned they were in the process of doing a reprint of their menus. Okay, understandable. We ordered burgers and fries. We waited...and waited...and waited. After half an hour I started looking around and basically none of the tables that had been sat ahead of us had food either. Our waitress apologized for the wait. We continued to wait. We started watching the staff. There was a waitress who was just wandering looking lost, barely attending to her tables who kept pacing the length of the restaurant. Doing absolutely nothing to help the process along. Our waitress virtually disappeared which come to find out, she had been pulled to the kitchen to help which to no fault of her own, but it would've been nice for someone else to cover our table in her absence or heck, even let us know. There was a lady who I'm pretty sure was the manager just standing at the kitchen window looking in and having casual conversation. Look, if you're the manager, you should be helping your team. The kitchen was clearly drowning and behind on orders but you pull our waitress to the kitchen instead and then don't cover her tables. We definitely waited around an hour and just about the time my partner got up to ask for the check our food arrived. Fries were soggy so they had either been sitting there a while or undercooked because of the rush. Our sides of sauce were not with our order and when my partner went to the window he had to interrupt the casual conversation the presumed manager was having to request the sauce. My burger was very red, I requested it well done and my egg was over hard not over-medium but at this point I just ate it because I was so hungry and was not about to wait on food again. We also felt bad and didn't want to bother our waitress with it since she was the only saving grace of the night. I didn't catch her name but she absolutely knocked it out of the park given that the staff around her and management were failing her. We did mention to her some of our issues to which she admitted a kitchen call in. Again, I'm going to point to the manager who should have stepped in to assist the kitchen especially on a Saturday night with only half the restaurant full. Our waitress did take 10% off our check for the wait unprompted which was very nice of her. As for the food...wish it had been totally correct because it was probably the best bacon and bleu cheese burger I've had in the Wichita area and their ranch I could bathe in it was so good. This was just an entire system failure and there was just no digging themselves out. I realllllly hope they fix their staffing issues because I would love to amend this and try this place again but the entire experience is going to put me off for a while. read more

I give The Anchor 5 stars for beer selection! We decided to stroll down Douglas after my friend got a tattoo. Lots of people were on the patio but we opted to get out of the heat and dine inside. We were seated instantly and I was amazed at the massive choice of different beers. Over half the menu are beer options and much of the beer is on tap which is really great. I decided on the draft Drumroll Unfiltered American Pale Ale. Infused with Pineapple, orange and grapefruit flavors, this was my first time trying it and I loved it (Odell Brewing in CO if you ever decide to look for it). Food is pretty decent. Ordered the club sandwich. Bacon was perfect but sandwich was a little dry. Didn't come with any dressings so had to request mayo. The fries are seasoned and extremely flavorful yet not too salty. I hate to write this since it was a great spot that our whole family could agree upon. I forgot to bring in my phone so I didn't get pictures but the menu has changed and so has the portion sizes. The burgers and fries used to be served on a nice size platter with lots of fries and now they are served on small trays with what seemed smaller burgers and much smaller side portions. The burn baby burn used to be served on a plate and is now in a small bowl. So we are paying the same prices for much smaller portions? Just spent $70 for food that was much smaller portions and our favorite smokehouse burger is no longer on the menu. We won't be back with that nonsense. We had the best experience here! It was our first time and we used the Yelp app to check in. We got there and only waited maybe 2 mins. Jaylen was our waitress and she made the experience even better. She greeted us and treated us like family. Our kids got the burgers and they ate every bit. My husband and I got the haystack with a portobello mushroom instead of the meat and it was the best thing I think we've ever eaten. We had the grilled jalapeños on top and they had great flavor. fish and chips!!!!!!!! are the best in wichita! Probably the best vs a lot of places. People here are great and the inviting atmosphere is just as good. I see a variety of people who come here to have a glass of beer and eat good food. I travel to different states and countries and I have not yet found a place or chef who makes such a spectacular fish and chips combination with a side of cole slaw. The only thing I think I noticed but did the price of the fish and chips go up! Correct me if I'm wrong. But that was kind of expensive. Not gonna mark it down for that for now. I had the pastrami on rye and the pastrami is very good. Just enough fat to keep it moist but not too much. Very good flavor. They say they smoke the pastrami in house and I believe it. I can't wait to come back to try some of their other burgers and sandwiches. read more
