This place is by far the best doggy daycare! The entire staff is so welcoming and so friendly! Most importantly, they are incredible with my fur babies! They are ok but likes to charge for bordetella shot on dogs even my dogs shots are up to dste. I have my dogs shots good for a year and they said they require a 6 month bordetella shot. So the question is why charge me when the shots are up to date? read more

I really like the Animal Keeper for several reasons. My daughter worked there in the 1990's while attending college and always gave us good feedback about the staff. Everyone presently are the best. It is also important to me that they require the Bordatella immunization twice a year and in so doing, has kept my dog free from kennel cough. Finally, I would suggest they post a sign in the lobby to make holiday reservations early because they fill up quickly and when they are full, callers become frustrated and rude on the phone, which is very unkind. We've taken our fur-baby Ella to The Animal Keeper in both Oceanside and Poway and they're FANTASTIC. Our girl is very shy and timid, but as soon as we ask her "Do you wanna go play with your friends?!" it's nonstop tail-wagging and excitement for her and she's like a different dog! She loves playing at tots and is totally exhausted the evening after she plays all day. We've also boarded her there many many times, and the employees have always been great with updating us and giving her good night treats before bedtime. If you are looking for a place that has good communication and is detailed oriented, look somewhere else. We had been looking for a backup dog day camp for when our usual pet-sitter goes on vacation. I called an inquired of the process for a first-timer and made a reservation for the following week. I made sure to drop off my dog's shot records the day before so he was good to go. They confirmed he would need bordetella which they could provide. Not a problem. On the morning of his first day, I brought his lunch and they confirmed they could feed him. The day went on and I didn't hear anything from them. I picked him up later in the afternoon. I was handed his leash and told to have a good day. No update about how his day went. No info regarding the socialization test. Absolutely nothing. I left a little annoyed and realized I forgot to ask about his lunch and bordetella. I called and spoke to someone at the front desk who told me that it appeared none of the daycare dogs were fed lunch and he did not receive his bordetella (even though this was their policy). I then asked about a report of his day since it was his first time. She told me that someone would have to call me back the next day because the morning shift was gone. Is there no communication between shifts? No documentation left from the socialization? Needless to say, I did not receive a call back. The reason they didn't receive 1 star is because my dog was returned relatively unscathed (at least I hope). read more

I can't believe everyone is comfortable with their puppies out in the rain with no indoor space. The staff was awesome so I left a tip but won't be going back. I was told that I couldn't see where she would be kept for day camp but employee took a couple pics for me. It was her 1st time around other dogs and she came home traumatized. I made the mistake leaving her to socialize because I thought it would be good for her but I screwed up and learned my lesson. I took her for her 1st grooming today somewhere else and she was so scared. 2 hours later I went back and she was happy running all over and licking the groomer. We've been using The Animal Keeper for over six years. They always take great care of our three dogs. My dogs are always happy to get dropped off and super stoked to get picked up. We've kept them there on overnights for as much as 7 days when we went out of the country. They do well with medication's. My one dog has a thyroid disorder and hast to take a pill twice a day. They gave them a super cute report card, which my daughter always gets a kick out of. The front desk is always professional and attentive. He did not make excuses for the terrible experience that I had, but listened and assured me that the below concerns would be addressed. I sure hope these issues are addressed. Original Review: Absolutely disappointing doesn't come close to expressing how upsetting this experience was! Started with the news that the groomer who was scheduled to take care of my pup wasn't there yet. Our appointment was at 9& it was 9:05 but I'll let that go. The stand in groomer who did the initial consultation w/me made me repeat myself 3 times before finally grabbing a pen & paper to scratch down undetailed notes about what I was expressing. I was told Jack would be ready in 2-3 hours. I explained my pup gets a little anxious as he's a rescue. I called 2.5 hours later to check in and left a message. After not hearing back, I arrived to get Jack at noon where 2 girls were staring at computers & no one in the waiting room. So please explain to me how they couldn't find the time to call me back??? They explained that they were very busy & it would be another 30-45 mins! Please explain to me why I made an appointment & why the appointment went almost an hour late! I didnt make an appointment just to have my pup thrown into a kennel and neglected for hours! I came back 30 mins later, they checked on Jack & clearly by the look of his toenails, they rushed to get him out. The girl upfront explained the groomer was working thru an injury & they were very busy- which is fine but if you're injured then maybe BE ONTIME TO WORK! & if you're injured then give customers the heads up that things will take longer! Finally when they brought him out I noticed they didn't even give him a trim around his rear which I was adamant to ask for because his hair grows long! But that was clearly the fault of the unprofessional groomer who was not prepared to communicate what I had asked for! But at this point i was beyond angry, & wanted to get my pup out of there!!! Overall from start to finish an awful, anxiety filled experience! We will NEVER go back!! Sad day when I had a better experience at Petsmart then at a professional groomers!!! read more

Hope attends dog camp during the week. She loves it! She has made several friends. Her fave activity is jumping into the pool. Staff is attentive with the dogs. They have activities for the dogs during major holidays. They also so something special on their birthday. There is always parking even with a small parking lot. The cost keeps going up for camp and hotel services. I do not see as many dogs as before when I bring Hope to camp. They do treat the dogs well. Grooming services are on the high side but the service is good. My dog is happy every time I pick her up. read more

The staff was super friendly and the daycare option was extremely affordable. My kitty was safe and happy while my landlord checked our apartment, and she was fed and taken well care of while I was gone. We sent our french bulldog puppy there for boarding after a package of 10 training sessions thinking it would be a good place since he was familiar. Our training session with his trainer was a positive experience. He was very affectionate and I could tell by how our puppy responded to him that he loved him. However the rest of our experience there was very negative. The first time we boarded our puppy there he came home sick and throwing up for about a week. I called and asked and their reply was that there had been kennel cough a week prior to our puppy's stay which did not help explain anything. This recent time, about a week ago my dog, now 1 years old, had a cut under his left arm and an ear infection. His ears were bleeding from grooming and feverish to the touch and he would cry when I tried to clean the blood out. His nails were not trimmed properly with snags that seemed uncomfortable for him. I reached out to the manager and received 1 email blaming play time for the cut under his arm but no subsequent response to the grooming and ear infection. I had even attached pictures for them to see. My puppy seemed upset and not his usual playful happy self when he came home. He did not have an appetite and kept to himself. This is a beloved pet who's care we entrusted, paid for and expected nothing less from a business catering to the care of pets! But failed to do so. I strongly do not recommend this place and will be boarding him elsewhere in the future. read more

I am updating this review for their excellent customer service. A day after I posted my original review, I received a phone call from the manager. She apologized profusely, and asked me to come in and meet with another groomer for free to try and salvage my pups fur. She also offered free grooming after his fur grew back to get it looking even, and free daycare. They booked our consult with the groomer for the next day, and when we went in the groomer came out promptly. We went in the back office to discuss what we could do. She looked over my dog, and agreed they had shaved his tummy. While there was nothing she could do to fix that, she offered to fix his paws and ears. She was very nice, and knowledgeable. She even had a golden of her own. She made sure she knew exactly what I wanted done before she took him in the back. Then the manager herself came out to speak with me. She was very sincere in her apologies, and made it clear that she wanted to work with me to get my dog back on the right track. She assured me that the groomer who had originally trimmed my dog, had been talked to. I believed her when she told me this wasn't the normal standard of service. I then waited in waiting area, the manager came out again to give me a status update. She admitted again that his belly was pretty messed up, but the rest of him was coming along well! I really admire that they were willing to admit to the mistake wholeheartedly, rather than trying to downsize it. Then my pup came out! Happy, and beautiful! I can't believe how well she managed shape up his paws and ears! His paws are practically perfect, I really don't know how she pulled it off! After about a month I believe a review is appropriate. I take my 75# pup here almost every day during the week. The staff is very loving with the dogs and I'm comfortable dropping him off daily. Had him bathed recently and was told he was very receptive and he smelled great. Much different contrast from a five starred renown groomer in the area whom when I picked my pup up still smelled. When my pup had issues with other pups the animal keeper advised moving him to a smaller group of dogs and seemed very attentive to my pups needs. The only negatives I've had is I've elected not to board my pup there when I'm away. They essentially keep the pups in an oversized kennel with every other hour bathroom breaks. Anything beyond that is a charge. When you look at what is cost to board a dog on Rover in a household it pales in comparison. The only other negative is while the front desk staff is great the guy handling the dogs in the yard doesn't seem as pleasant. I get he's often the only guy handling a ton of dogs day in and out. But just seems overly negative and not welcoming. I'm not one of those positive training only people and being in the military I'm quite familiar with discipline. However, Not exactly a fan of the way he disciplines the dogs. He gives the vibes of its his job and not that he has a passion for it. Very different than the front desk staff. read more

The Animal Keeper in Oceanside is more than I could have hoped for to provide high-quality boarding, day care, and grooming for my two "furry kids", dogs Jamie and Maggie, 11 years old. In the process of putting my home on the market, my real estate agent told me that the pets' "doggy smell" was offensive to potential buyers. I'd never been told that before by family or friends who visited the house. Because I've lived with dogs (and cats) for years, I and my family, including my late husband and children, had become accustomed to their odors. (Apparently, not saying something about this was supposed to be kinder than telling us the truth.) After thoroughly cleaning the house, the floors, carpets, and furniture to remove the odors, my agent advised me to board the dogs "for the duration" -- that is, until the house was sold. My veterinarian recommended The Animal Keeper in Oceanside. I boarded Jamie and Maggie there for almost two months! I avoided visiting, because I felt so guilty "putting them in storage." When I did see them, I could see they were well cared-for by the staff, and were comfortable. Still, I missed them so -- they had been with me over 10 years! I hated returning home from work because my puppies weren't there. Finally, I talked to Liisa (with two i's) Jackson, the manager. She saw how miserable I was, and was very understanding. She told me I could bring Maggie and Jamie home, and bring them back to The Animal Keeper every day for "day camp" and they could get weekly bathing and grooming as well. That way, not only would I be saving money, but my house could stay "minty fresh" and I could have my furry family back together when I was at home. So that's what I did. I wish I knew about this sooner! The staff of The Animal Keeper in Oceanside truly love animals and provide dogs, cats, rodents, birds, reptiles -- just about any type of household pet -- just the care they need. The facility is spotlessly clean (no pet smells here!). Dogs have plenty of play-time, healthy food, good-sized kennels, and every "spa" treatment they could ever need. Today, Jamie and Maggie jump into the car for the daily ride to The Animal Keeper. Staff members come to the car to get them, and they are happy and relaxed to accompany them and join the rest of the "pack" frolicking or just hanging out in their open-air playground. At the end of the day, the staff brings the dogs right to my car. They are clean, fed, and happy. When my house finally belongs to someone else and we move elsewhere, I will still bring my dogs to The Animal Keeper in Oceanside. It's fantastic, and well worth the price, for their well-being and my peace of mind. read more

Great training and boarding packages. Bennett, a trainer, has been the best dog trainer for my dog. Bennett took my dog with severe anxiety towards others on walks to a dog who confidently walks on the leash with no problem. 100/10 recommend. I came to visit San Diego area and was looking for a boarding place for my shih-tzu. I usually bring her to Petsmart but they didn't have any petshotel close to our hotel. But Thank goodness I found Animal Keeper. Giving them 4 stars for boarding service: 1) Great location It's located around commercial buildings. (i.e. around walmart, wells fargo bank, Mcdo, Sizzler, etc.) 2) Great customer service I spoke to Brianna & Rachel over the phone and they gave me all the information I needed. Brianna though didn't give me much information as much as Jenny did when I checked in. Jenny explained that the dogs are let out 5-7 times a day for potty breaks which should be explained beforehand so clients know whether they need to add walks/exercise on the package. I really thank Jenny for being so informative and helpful! 3) Variety of add ons -Tuck in time is my favorite. You can add this for only $2 and they will give your pet extra love before bed time :) Perfect for my shih-tzu since they are very sweet dogs. - health coverage just incase they need to bring your pet to animal hospital/clinic and get checked. (i.e. if they get sick, when they vomit, etc. ($10 for $500 coverage) - Kong with peanut butter only for $3! - one on one playtime or group playtime - and more add ons, check their website, go to forms, and you should be able to see the list. Some may not be available online but you can always call and check, and they might just have it! 4) Cleaned toys upon pick up - They actually wash the personal toy you brought with your pet. Wonderful! 5) Oreo seemed really happy and she looks like she had a lot of fun. 6) She didn't smell bad when I picked her up unlike at PetsHotel(PetSmart) Taking 1 star off because: 1) Limited personal toys - They only allow one personal toy. vs. Petshotel allows 3! 2) Crates not allowed - Whenever I bring my shih tzu to PetsHotel(Petsmart), I leave the crate with her because she feels secured with it. Animal Keeper doesn't allow crates. 3) There is no staff after 7pm per Brianna. Which means, pets boarded, are left alone in the building without any attendants. Makes me feel less secure. Security cameras are not enough. I suggest Animal Keeper to have 1 or 2 staff overnight just like at Petshotel(PetSmart) so clients do not worry. Overall, I received a great service and Oreo had a pleasant stay. But I just wish they allowed more toys and the crate or atleast personal bedding so Oreo didn't have to adjust much on her first night and staff onsight overnight should be available. read more

I am so happy that this place was recommended to me when my dog was a pup. My baby has been coming here for 2 1/2 years and always comes home happy. She actually runs ahead of me to get in the door and doesn't look back as soon as I hand her off to the keepers. I really feel like they treat my dog as if she were their own. I love watching her run into the yard excited to see her doggie friends. She also gets particularly excited to see one of the keepers, I think her name is Lisa. She runs up to her for butt rubs and from what I see Lisa loves Sasha as much as Sasha loves her. It really means the world to me to know that I can trust the staff to care for my pup like they would their own.
