What a fantastic time we had here. We went out of town for a couple of days and I needed to board my bird. They happily took care of my bird, even though this facility is for cats and dogs. I was so grateful. They did an outstanding job. My bird seemed so happy when I picked him up. He is typically a mama's boy and gets very upset when I leave. I know my bird received lots of TLC just by how happy he was. His cage was clean as well as his food and water trays when I picked him up, which shows me that they were properly looking after him. He seemed sad to be leaving those awesome girls. I think this place is great. The staff is so nice and attentive. I highly recommend the Animal Keeper. read more

1st time here to get my baby groomed. Upon arrival the property is clean, well kept. You can hear the pets in the front fenced daycare area & sort of see them through the fence. I was impressed that there wasn't any "nervous barking" - all the big dogs seemed happy, active and in good spirits. As for the grooming, I am elated with the results. Being a new husky owner I have been exhausted every day since I brought my little Buffy home. Once she got her shots we knew we needed to try doggie daycare. We had walked by the Animal Keeper a lot before we had a dog and we loved to see all the big dogs playing in the front. Buffy LOVES to go to doggie daycare and we LOVE that it exhausts her energy level. :) I was super happy they gave me a tour. Such nice staff too. I am writing this review for the day camp. We took our dog there for about a year (we recently moved) but we had a great experience with The Animal Keeper. They were very nice to our dog and I felt really comfortable with leaving him there (I'm a worried mom). They would give us updates at the end of the day on how our dog did and we were also able to call them to check on him too. The only thing I wish they had was a camera so I can see him play :) Overall, a great experience and I am really sad to be leaving them! read more

My dogs have been there several times for boarding and also just for daycare. My dogs act very happy when I drop them off - that is a good enough sign for me that they are well cared for. The only thing is the price is pretty hefty for me with 4 dogs. Because of that, I am looking into other options. read more

From their clean facilities to their amazingly attentive staff, outstanding grooming, day care, and boarding-this is THE place to take your furry friend! I have had the opportunity to utilize all of their services since our move to the area in July 2015. We have done training and day care, grooming, and occasional boarding for our schnauzer. All the services have been quality and all the staff has had a smile on their face! We had a horrible experience at the Animal Keeper in August 2008. Unfortunately we moved soon after so I didn't get to post a review, but we just moved back to San Diego so wanted everyone to know about our experience. Went there based on good reviews. Seemed like this would be a good place for dogs. Our dog, 2 years old, is very gentle and non-aggressive, very well-behaved. Gets along well with other dogs in parks and at other kennels. When we came to pick up our dog, we couldn't believe what we saw. Our lab had huge bites on his neck that were dry blood and multiple red punctures through his fur. The Animal Keeper people acted like they didn't even have a clue it had happened when we pointed it out. They continued to deny any responsibility and blamed our dog, "he may have had a hot spot and dogs scratch themselves. They claimed it must have just occurred on the day of pick up and did not have have a vet evaluate and treat him. My husband asked to talk with the manager and had to had raise cane for the manager to finally concede and take responsibility. They finally ended up waiving the boarding fee and paying for the vet bill. He was on antibiotics and treated for this vicious attack bites. We were so shaken and upset by this experience. It's our theory that there was inadequate supervision during the playtime and he must have been attacked by another dog. i would NEVER use the Animal Keeper again. Be careful if you consider this place. Our dog is our family. We would never take such a known risk ever again. Now we know. We would have understood IF they had taken immediate action to get him treated, IF they had taken responsibility and been more professional about the whole experience. read more

We've been bringing our miniature schnauzer Maggie to the Animal Keeper in Poway for a year. We take her to day care on Tuesdays and Fridays so she can run around and socialize with other little dogs. We've also boarded her there when we go on vacation. The staff, especially Tom, Adele, Angelea and everybody else are great. When I bring Maggie in she runs up to them tail wagging - glad to see them again. They take great care of her and of us. When money is a little tighter during the summer she was afraid she was not going to be able to pay for the daycare and would possibly have to return her rescue to the shelter. I'm going to have to knock off a star because you took my dog out of play to get a bath and then put him back in play afterward without informing me that this was the plan first. I wanted my dog to actually play to to point of fatigue and THEN get a bath, not have a bath break and then go back outside. That makes him just stink again! Took my new 16 week old minipoodle for her first grooming here after reading the generally great reviews. They did a fine job with bath, nails, ear hair removal, etc but I just spent $153 at my vet given the huge ear infection my baby now has! My vet said this is classic with poor grooming and water in the ears, 3 to 4 days after the service. The timing fits exactly for us! One ear is full of bacteria in the other is full of yeast. My poor baby scratched and scratched all night long and finally we made the vet appointment today! Grooming $50, Vet $153, Up all night and 2 sets of meds for a week= priceless! I was willing to overlook the general chaotic nature of the checkin process and the fact that I needed a rabies certificate (which they never asked to see)...........beware, not sure if this is the business or that particular groomer but i won't go back! read more

I can't say enough GREAT things about Poway Animal Keeper! I've taken our fur baby (2 year old German Shepherd) here for the last year. We visit every other week for day camp, utilize their one-stop shopping grooming services, and have also stayed multiple times for extended boarding. The staff is friendly and always welcomes our guy by his first name. Tom, the manager is fantastic as is all the staff. The dogs play in a large, fenced, yard, and by peeking in, you can tell they are having a blast! The facility is clean and welcoming and they also offer high quality food/toys, etc, just in case you are running low. You never have to worry about your "kiddo" when they're having playtime at Animal Keeper. Highly recommend!!! read more

My experience is similar to one of the other patron's experiences. Two summers ago, I got married and we decided to have our dogs stay there for four days (we were married, locally) just because we couldn't be at home with them for most of the day. On the outside, The Animal Keeper looks lovely. I own a home in Poway and love to do my business in Poway. I have two dogs (a boy and a girl) and they were there for a little over three days. They both came back EXTREMELY sick. So much so to the point, I did NOT think that my little girl would make it. My little girl goes to the Poway dog park on a weekly basis (usually every Saturday morning) and have shared my story with many other dog owners. I was surprised that I was not the only one who has had an experience like this. My dog is current on all of her vaccinations, has been around many dogs and have NEVER been as sick as she was from staying at The Animal Keeper. Both dogs came back with a bad sickness, kennel cough. When I called to let them know what my dog ended up with after staying there, I was simply told..."it happens". So, I just "happened" to decide not to use them any more. All of the items in their store are very overpriced. read more

Have had my Morkie (Yorkie/Maltese) boarded several times and they are always pleasant to deal with. She is happy to see us and I feel that she is well cared for, we pay alittle extra for additional one on one play time which is a nice choice, so she is not in her little area all day alone. Think twice. Nice facility and friendly staff on the phone. My in person drop off didn't set well, to the point that my gut told me not to leave my dog here. Two hours later the call I received confirmed why I should have gone back in to get her. Moral of the story, never second guess your gut. I have kept my dog at Animal Keeper forever. When he died and we got a new puppy we stayed with Animal Keeper. The staff are so nice and the choices are amazing. You can specialize your pets stay so that you can call and check in on them. In addition, the make sure to place your dog in the group best for them. If your dog doesn't like other dogs you can have the dog play with the staff. They have a spa and grooming service so that if you don't want to come to a dirty dog they can clean them for you. Great (if you pick pup up by 2 pm). What I discovered is all those those happy pups in the play yard go into a kennel at 2pm which means that If you're picking up Spot at 6 pm, he's all rested and ready to go! Staff is great. Facilities are nice. But I can have him sleep for free at home. Or pay the same amount at another facility where he's engaged from the time I drop him off to when I pick him up. read more

I was extremely disappointed with the Animal Keeper, since it came so highly recommended by my colleagues I was expecting a great experience. The people that work there are friendly enough, but there are so many of them coming and going that they seem unknowledgeable and inexperienced. I boarded my Helen Woodward Rescue dog for several days and called on 2 occassions to see how she was doing in the doggy day care play time group. I was told different things by different employees. At no time did any of the workers inform me that my dog was pulled from the play time group. It was only when I went to pick her up that I was told she could not participate in the playgroup. When asked why the girl at the counter stated, "Oh there's no notes so I don't know." Someone did call me later on to let me know what happened in the playgroup, but at that point it was too little too late. My dog is like my child and there is no way that I would leave her at the Animal Keeper again, since they don't seem to know one dog from the other there. read more

I've taken my dog to daycare here 5 times, and overall I'm happy thanks to a great trainer they have on staff named Justin. He remembers every dog and is attentive to their needs. However, I'm not thrilled about the ratio of dogs:trainers. I see one (great) trainer but way too many dogs in the yard. Obviously the place is popular, which is a good sign, but I'd feel better seeing more humans in the yard to help control the chaos. One day looked so crowded that the dogs can't really run or play with much space. Would be even better if they could expand to a larger location, or open a second (or third) yard to have more room and less dog anxiety. Still, I'm comfortable leaving my dog there and appreciate their good work! read more

We just came back from a 10 day trip and we left our dog Asscher at this boarding facility. We recently started using this facility because it is closer to our home than the one we had been using. My husband was very disturbed when he picked up our dog. He said that Asscher looked disgusting and appeared to have something red on his fur on his back and face...possibly blood. We board our dog rather frequently as you can see from my other yelp reviews that we travel often. We even board our dog if we are going to be gone all day or over night. We have never gotten our dog back in the condition that we got him back this time. It makes me really sad to know that my dog was not taken care of while we were gone. We even called while we were gone to check in Asscher and we were told he was fine. Had we known there was any sort of problem we would have tried to fix it. I go to the Poway location. The staff is super nice and very informative. They care about the animals and it shows. I've used them twice for boarding and have been happy with the care they provide my dog and love the cute report cards they give. They lost a star because I was initially charged for things I did not put on contract (they fixed it and corrected without issue). So just make sure you review your charges and what you actually signed up for. Otherwise , I know my dog is in good hands ! read more

I have been taking my Standard Poodle, Baxter, to Shelly for grooming since he was a puppy. He is now 4 1/2 years old. Shelly is an excellent groomer and Baxter loves to go see her. Not only does she groom him but while he is there, her and the Animal keeper staff and play with him and love him like he was one of their own. Shelly and The Animal Keeper are great! On my first visit to Animal Keeper (Poway) I saw a pleasant ranch style exterior and dogs playing nicely with each other in the front enclosure. When I entered the building I noticed everything was well kept and was greeted by the front desk personnel. I was politely told that I needed to have my pet's shot records faxed over from the veterinarian which the Animal Keepers took care of. I was shown the kitty enclosures and my cat was properly taken care of for four days. I recently got a new kitty because the first one decided to go on walk-about. I thought I would use the same facilities because I had a good experience the first time. Kitty #2 was recently neutered and had a slight eye infection. Animal Keepers assured me they could give the kitty the necessary medications which I brought. I dropped my kitty off at 8:30 AM. The front desk personnel entered the medication into their records and I was out the door in minutes. Around 4 PM I get a phone call that the second shift is unable to apply neither the eye medication (drops) nor the liquid oral pain medication. This medication is extremely easy to give to kitty so I was surprised that professional animal handlers were ill equipped. I asked if they had any experience in giving a cat medicine. All you have to do is hold the cat in your arms and gently squeeze the bottle/dropper; it's so simple a child could handle the task. Animal Keepers told me that they would not be giving the animal any medication for the duration of its stay because of the way the cat was position in the cage. I told them I was going to pick up the cat after work. I arrived after work to pick up my cat. One of the front desk personnel asked me to come into the cat enclosure because she was afraid of cats. Great. I found my cat in the back of the cage looking terrified. I reached in slowly and gently picked up my cat wondering why Animal Keepers could not handle a scared smallish cat. As I leaving, I asked how the pet's medication was successfully given in the morning. I was politely told that people at the facilities around 5 PM were the afternoon shift and they had no knowledge if the pet's medications were given or not in the morning. I was also told that there would be no charge for today's stay. As you see, I had two very different experiences. Based on my last experience, I can't give more than two stars because Yelp nailed it with "Meh, I've experienced better." Animal Keepers I kindly suggest you work with your employees to improve the experience for people and their furry friends. read more

My dog always seems happy to be dropped off in the mornings. The staff is always very friendly and my dog really seems to love them. The one thing I would love to see is a web cam so I could take a peek and see what she is up to during the day, or receive some kind of feedback. I have been using Animal Keeper for years and have always appreciated their friendliness, professionalism, and clean (beautiful) facility. I felt the need to make a Yelp review this morning after an experience I had with them yesterday. We were out of town, exhausted, and swung in there to pick our dog up on our way home. I had forgotten my leash, but the girls at the front desk were so helpful and accommodating. I apologized and told them that I could carry my golden doodle to the car. They quickly offered to let me use the blue leash from their facility to help me out, take it home to make sure he got in the house safely, and bring it back the next time.
