My cherry cream pie wasn't beautiful but I never say no to cherry pie
    Steve O.

Since I was in the area after an appointment at UCLA Medical Center, my wife and I were debating whether to stop by Johnnie's in Culver City or the Apple Pan in WLA. After examining the current prices, we decided to take the thrifty option and went with Apple Pan. This place makes an amazing burger. We love the hickory burger with cheddar cheese. That thick layer of crunchy lettuce and their unique BBQ sauce make it a winner. The sauce isn't thick like many others and it has just the right balance between sweet and tangy that I've never found anywhere else. The fries are pretty run of the mill though. I did order a slice of cherry cream pie but haven't dug into that yet being too full after eating my burger and fries. Parking is bit challenging. They've created an outdoor patio area where there used to be a few parking spaces. A guard watches over the lot across the street during business hours so they probably shoo you away until after closing. You'll have to find street parking which is metered but I'm not sure about the hours. Still, it's definitely worth the time to stop and get one of their iconic burgers.

Menu as of 7/1/26 but pretty sure it's been the same for decades.

We've been trying to come here for two years now! We were finally able to go today and it was so delicious! My boyfriend ordered the hickory burger and I ordered the steak burger. Both were great, but we liked the hickory burger better. It has a smoky bbq sauce that is soooo yummy. The steak burger also has a special sauce which was good but it has large chunks of relish in the sauce, which I'm not a huge fan of so I'll definitely stick to the hickory burger next time. For dessert we ordered the apple pie. YUM!! Definitely recommend. The overall vibe is super cute too! Love the simplicity and classic diner feel. There's only one counter inside and more tables in the patio.

A lot of people rave about this place, I'm not sure what the hype is about. Tried their apple pie and it was pretty average. It wasn't good nor bad--just straight middle of the road. I've had better apple pie and I've had worse. Service is quick. Interior is a classic diner style. Personally wouldn't come back.

Old school diner. Only bar top seating. Love the style! However, it is small inside. It can get busy but since the menu is small. I think the line does move pretty fast. Everything came out good. Except the meat came medium done. So, for all my well done eaters like myself, I say put that request when ordering just in case. Also, I love onions and my burger didn't come with it. But I saw they do have it. So add that also when ordering. Oh! And they use good Tillamook cheese! None of that fake cheese! Plus! Look how clean the burger and sandwich is put together! It's not falling apart! Overall, love the vibe and they close late as well. I would definitely come back and try their fresh pies!

This has been on my list for a while after they did a collab with SideCar. The Hickory Burger was a pretty decent burger $10.25. The special sauce was interesting. The patty was juicy and moist. The ice berg had a nice crunch. Cheese is extra. I did not order fries, since I already ate lunch. Parking can be tricky but Wells Fargo is next door. Overall, it's been around for 80 years so they have definitely been in the neighborhood. They do have loyal customers. My one note would be the ringer for to-go and pick-up. It was broken and people were waiting a long time for a slice of pie $7.75.

Such a basic place. I feel like I've tried when I was younger but didn't remember the food. I tried recently and I understand why. this place is totally forgettable. Maybe people love the pie, which I haven't tried.

One of the best burgers I have ever had! Just looking at the picture I took reminds me of how good that burger was. I ordered the steak burger and would highly recommend. I can't wait to go back to try a different burger. The fries were pretty good & the banana cream pie was delicious.

I recall that this place was on a lot of top places to eat lists back in the day, but I never actually tried it until today. While I was here, I asked the guy what I should get and he suggested a hickory burger and either an apple pie or a banana cream pie. He said those were the best choices. My favorite item of the bunch was the banana cream pie. It had a lot of flavor and just hit the right way. I really enjoyed this a lot. I think the flavors blended extremely well together and this was a quality pie. Next was the apple pie. It was really good, had just the right amount of cinnamon and glaze over the apples and also had a crispy crust. It came with a sauce as well to enhance the apple pie as well. While the burger was good, I'm not that big of a fan of ketchup, and it had a lot of it on it. The grilled onions were cooked really well though. I feel if there was less, or no ketchup, I would've probably enjoyed this more. But if you like ketchup a lot, you may really enjoy this burger. The service is pretty quick. The ambiance is nice with their outdoor patio. I think this is a pretty good place for pies!

Finally had a chance to step in and boy was this place amazing. Americana charm at its finest. Had me a hickory burger which reminded me of a classic carnival burger, the char and the sweet taste hit home! Fries are well done and crisp although portion a tad too small. Had their egg salad on rye and it was perfect! Topped it off with a slice of apple pie ala mode and the pie was a bit wet but otherwise served warm and crust good. Fast quick service. Friendly family vibes.

Solid dinner spot. Classic burgers. I'd order the fries extra well done next time. They were fresh but a few people next to us got well done and they looked even better (golden & crispy). Canned sodas. Apple pie was decent but I wasn't blown away / would pass on it next time. Super nice staff & very quick service. Street metered parking. Cute classic spot!

    Boysenberry pie - try!!
    Rebecca N.

The original apple pie was just okay, but the boysenberry pie (limited edition I believe) was such a standout - super delicious and you don't really see it anywhere else. A bit pricey for a small-ish slice, but I would definitely get it again and recommend trying it if it's in season! They have a bunch of tables with benches outside. Cute shop!

What an iconic and nostalgic old fashioned diner from a bygone era. The atmosphere felt like we stepped back in time to the 1940s! We got there when it opened at 11am and were seated at the horseshoe counter on red leather cushy bar stools. Only 26 seats are available. The service was old school caring and politeness. Our freshly ground burgers were very good and the delicious homemade apple pie lived up to the name of the restaurant! Next time, I'd order a double hickory burger instead of a single, although pricey. The hickory burger was tasty and the steak burger was also good and served with a ketchup and relish house sauce. Each burger comes with a large wedge of iceburg lettuce. I'd highly recommend the double patty. Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's, tried to purchase or partner with The Apple Pan, but fortunately, they turned him down. You can still get the authentic vintage burger dining experience at the Apple Pan. A "Must" on your visit to LA.

Hickory Burger - Lots of lettuce.
    Eric H.

Est. 1947- Maybe the oldest burger & pie diner in all of los Angeles (besides Bob's Big Boy in Burbank), The Apple Pan is one of the most popular burger joints in town. Both locals and tourists clamor for a shot at one of the 26 stools, surrounding the horseshoe-shaped counter. The menu is simple - two burgers, a couple of sandwiches, fries and pie! What else do you need!! (they also have tuna and egg salad). The burgers are grilled, wrapped in paper and served with or without cheese. The Steak Burger (1927) and the Hickory Burger (1945) are the staples. Yes, you can get a better burger (with less lettuce) somewhere else, but when they slap down that burger on the counter in front of you, It becomes more than just food, it's an experience. Many say that the pie is the real star at the Apple Pan. They offer about a dozen different varieties, but it is not surprising that the Apple Pie is the coveted choice. The Apple Pan has gone cashless, since May of 2025. I'm not happy about that but what can you do (I wonder if they still take cash tips), Nevertheless, one cannot deny that this is another great food experience which is so unique to LA. It's more than a meal, it's LA burger history. The Apple Pan is a no-frills, step-back-in-time experience (except for the 'No Cash' thing).

The Apple Pan Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - The Apple Pan

    Do they sell tshirts?

Yes, short sleeve and long sleeve, a hoodie and a hat.

Are alk their dessert super sweet or less sweet. I prefer less sweet. Please let me know your feedback. I've never gotten dessert here. Thank you?

They are not overly sweet. You can ask their staff also which pies they think are best. I love the chocolate cream pie.

Is there still the outdoor eating area?

    They do have outdoor seating.

    How is the parking?

Parking is on the street. They removed their original parking lot to create great outdoor seating and dining.

Will you be bringing back the peach cream pie this summer?

I would call them and ask them. They are the only ones that will know that Answer.

Are the patties larger than before? Who owns AP now?

Patties seem about the same. Rock n roll manager Irving azoff purchased the apple pan a couple years ago but pledged to keep things substantially the same. They do take credit card now which is nice.

What's the difference between the steak burger and the hickory burger?

Same burgers except the addition of hickory flavoring on the meat. It's my favorite!

Do you sell your bbq sauce?

You can get a side order. I am not sure if they sell it by the bottle. Great idea, though, if enough people ask for it, maybe we can buy a pint.

How busy is it in the afternoons after lunch crowd like around 2 ish?

it's less busy than during prime lunch hour for sure!

Can you do cooked to order like medium rare?

I've always ordered my burgers at apple pan, medium rare.

    Do they take card?

Yes they take credit cards now

    Is online ordering available?

Online ordering is not available at this time.

Is this business wheelchair accessible and able to eat at a lower table?

There is only an old fashioned counter that all customers eat at or take out. Also no lower table nor outdoor patio.

Can you ever rent out the Apple Pan for an event?

Yes! As long as you're someone like notoriously despised Knicks owner James Dolan, and you're friends with Apple Pan's notoriously despised billionaire owner Irving Azoff, you can have them use caution tape to turn half of the restaurant into a VIP…

How busy does it get on the weekends? Is seating first come first serve?

It's always busy around lunch (11:30-2-ish). Yes, it's first come first serve sort of on the honor system. It's also sort of unofficially split into sides. If you're standing on one side and you're next on that side, you usually get priority even if…

    Chocolate cream pie?

    Yes they do.

Do they take reservations for groups of 10+?

They do not reservations. This place is probably not a good idea for a large group either.

Walked in on a Sunday around 11:30am, restaurant maybe a quarter full. Seated in a corner with incomplete silverware, no menus for several minutes, no water for even longer. Waited another 10-15 minutes with menus in hand before anyone came to take our order. The food wait aside, what really stood out was the lack of basic check-ins. No "sorry for the wait," no acknowledgment, and when I finally asked for the bill, the manager came over with the terminal, took payment, and walked off without much of a follow-up except to hand over boxes. Just a little warmth goes a long way! Food, when it arrived: * Landwer's Pancakes: the highlight. Three pancakes tall with seasonal fruit, whipped cream, Nutella, and maple syrup. My friend and I made a reservation for outdoor dining for brunch. We arrive right around our reservation time to find nobody at the podium. After a few minutes, a woman comes up and asks, "For two?" before immediately turning around and walking the other way, to which point we stop her and say that we actually had a reservation which we gave her all the details for. She stopped for about half a second, grabbed menus, then turned around again and brought the menus to an indoor table, then just walked away without making eye contact. She did not even tell us to follow her nor say a single word to us once we were seated. No worries, right? Wrong. We perused the menus and waited for about ten minutes, with no staff members coming by to help us. We started looking around to try to flag someone down, but each staff member was either not looking in our direction and/or wearing a different outfit from the next staff member, with some outfits almost having a nightclub aesthetic than wait staff. Eventually, another individual comes by our table and, again, without greeting us or making any eye contact, aloofly says, "Just order off the QR code," which we didn't see because the menus were covering it. Now, my friend who I was with works in the mall, and I know the restaurant offers a discount for mall employees, so as the employee was walking away, I called out and asked if we would still get the discount if ordering off the QR code, and he said yes. Note that in all the times my friend and I have eaten here in the past, it was always traditional table service. Then, we go to place our order, and after adding everything to the basket, it tries to charge my credit card. At this point, almost 20 minutes had gone by since we arrived, with still no single greeting or water or silverware set or anything. I get up to speak to another waiter who was helping nearby tables, to which I am again told to just order off the QR code but was reassured that the mall discount would be applied once the tab was settled. So we oblige and place our order through the portal. Several minutes later, the same waiter who I had most recently spoken with had come to our table (mind you, this is the first time someone came to our table in the entire time we were seated) and said that the restaurant was out of some of the items on our menu. And it was at this point that we FINALLY got waters. At this point, we had to look through the menu again, but it was getting to the point where we were going to miss our movie, so we had to just abandon ship and eat at the mall food court. Upon leaving, the only acknowledgement we got was from the first woman who "brought" us to our table, which was a petty smile and wave. Allow me to make myself clear. I hold no animosity against any establishment for being short-staffed, for requiring QR code ordering, or for being out of ingredients. This stuff just happens. What I do have an issue with is the astounding lack of any grace or hospitality, without even a simple "Whenever you're ready go ahead and use the QR codes on the table" or even a welcome. It just felt as though every person was just trying to get by with doing the bare minimum, and every employee had attitude. Even the couple next to us, who had been seated before we arrived, never got acknowledged. It's honestly a shame, because many of the items here are great, and the offerings are unique, but if this is how Cafe Landwer chooses to operate and treat its customers, I won't be back.
