I came here during a recent LA weekend trip with friends, after hearing this was one of the oldest diners in LA, with some of the best burgers. We came for a late lunch and enjoyed our experience! Surprisingly, parking (metered on the street) and getting seated at the old school U-shaped counter were quick and easy around 2pm on a Saturday. Service was friendly and quick too. Our server joked around with us a bit, which was fun. We ordered a couple hickory burgers, a couple steak burgers, fries, banana-chocolate cream pie, and strawberry pie with ice cream. I had picked the steak burger, which was good, but I sort of wish I'd listened to the server's rec to get the hickory burger (most famous/popular menu item). I actually think my favorite thing we got was the fries, which were served very hot and a perfect level of crispy. Also liked the prices! I recall that this place was on a lot of top places to eat lists back in the day, but I never actually tried it until today. While I was here, I asked the guy what I should get and he suggested a hickory burger and either an apple pie or a banana cream pie. He said those were the best choices. My favorite item of the bunch was the banana cream pie. It had a lot of flavor and just hit the right way. I really enjoyed this a lot. I think the flavors blended extremely well together and this was a quality pie. Next was the apple pie. It was really good, had just the right amount of cinnamon and glaze over the apples and also had a crispy crust. It came with a sauce as well to enhance the apple pie as well. While the burger was good, I'm not that big of a fan of ketchup, and it had a lot of it on it. The grilled onions were cooked really well though. I feel if there was less, or no ketchup, I would've probably enjoyed this more. But if you like ketchup a lot, you may really enjoy this burger. The service is pretty quick. This has been on my list for a while after they did a collab with SideCar. The Hickory Burger was a pretty decent burger $10.25. The special sauce was interesting. The patty was juicy and moist. The ice berg had a nice crunch. Cheese is extra. I did not order fries, since I already ate lunch. Parking can be tricky but Wells Fargo is next door. Overall, it's been around for 80 years so they have definitely been in the neighborhood. They do have loyal customers. My one note would be the ringer for to-go and pick-up. Finally made it to the famous Apple pan known to have the one of the best burgers in Los Angeles. I am so happy that I did come because they did not disappoint. 1st of all the restaurant is spotless the white counter tops are pristine. The service is spot on and now let's talk about the food. The tilamook cheddar that they put on the burgers is so good I do believe it's a dollar up charge for this cheese but it is well worth it. The buns are grilled to perfection with the crunchy side but soft middle. The patty was very good well seasoned you could taste the quality of the meat although I wish I knew that it came medium rare because I prefer mine medium or medium well but it didn't matter it was still good. I got the hickory burger it had a good sauce on it and a good Smokey flavor to it. Overall, I highly recommend this place. I haven't been here for several years. I decided to stop by at 11 am on a weekday when they opened for business. Good timing as only others were waiting to go in. I was a bit turned off by the waitress. I wasn't welcomed and kept waiting while she chit-chatted with the other employees. She never cracked a smile and eventually took my order. I ordered my favorite - the Hickory Cheeseburger. It was served to me cold and the cheese was stuck to the wrapper. But it was still good which is why I've been coming here for decades. I'll give the waitress credit the way she handled a very rude customer. He was seated near me and placed an order and the waitress tried to clarify his custom order. He said in a loud voice, "Honey, I've been eating here for years before you were born, and you need to listen." She calmly finished the order and maintained her composure. While the prices have increased slightly, I felt it was competitive and not over the top. After almost 20 years in L.A., I finally went to The Apple Pan. It's been around since '47, inspired "90210"'s The Peach Pitt, and the Johnny Rockets chain. The cheese also wasn't very melty. However, I liked that the bread still stayed crispy and crunchy. I ordered it on rye and it was good. The tuna portion was generous and it was creamy. I also did an add-on of grilled onions which was good, but not necessary. It came with a side of pickles and black olives. In front of the line, an unhappy customer explained that they screwed up her order but didn't give them the accurate refund. This is our 2nd time here since the late 90's! Because we don't hardly come out to West LA area...so in a way you can say it's our 1st time here in a looooonnggg time! We came on Sunday late noon, and luckily there was room inside. They have outdoor dining now in the back, and if you do that, you order your food outside and they only take Credit Cards now, NO cash. I do love their Steak Burger, my hubby said that it was smaller now, compared to when they made it back in the late 90's, it was tasty. My favorite was their Banana Cream Pie...they put Real bananas in the pie, not just all cream!! Other places I've been to, only have the cream and they just put a few slices of banana on top of the whipped cream. Not here, you get lots of banana. Service was below neutral. We had to ask for more water, when our glasses were empty, they don't come by (at least when we were there), and ask how everything is and my hubby had to ask about our fries, because after we got our burgers, that was it. If you want it well done, make sure you tell them. If you order fries, they'll squirt ketchup on a plate for you, just like at Johnny rockets. The fries were ok. They seemed like regular frozen fries. Nothing too special, but they definitely were fried perfectly! Not too crispy and not too soggy. I ordered Apple pie to go because I was running out of time. I had 2 bites of the apples with the extra sauce they serve with it and I should have definitely had it there with a scoop of ice cream. I can only imagine. This place is a fixture on the West Side. When you walk in, you are easily transported back in time to the 50s Los Angeles. Neat, clean and efficient. I cannot say how many times I've craved this comfort food and just drive there and am so grateful it still exists. I sit down the end and get a burger and fries. It's funny because months pass between visits and the same server knows me and gets me what I need without asking. You feel like a regular instantly. This iconic restaurant opened its doors 77 years ago and is still going strong. My last time here was over 40 years ago. Other than changes in ownership the place itself looks much like I remember. From the limited counter seating, to the picnic tables in the back, this place still has visitors from around the world walking through its doors for a taste of history. Many staffers have worked here over 25 years. My server Jorge, a 30 year employee has seen changes over the years but he said what hasn't changed is the quality of the service and food.
