I hadn't been to Johnnie's in YEARSSSSSS. And the last time, it was a not so great experience. My boyfriend wanted to try a new place for pastrami and Johnnie's of course came to mind. I figured why not another go. We came on a late Sunday afternoon. We parked in their lot, which has signs that says it's specifically for Johnnie's customer. But, of course there were Tito's Tacos customers parking there, so there weren't many open spots. We decided to sit inside in their diner booths. Small and quaint, but clean and good vibes. Our server was very sweet and attentive. When sat, they give you the most delicious vinegar pickles. YUMMMM! We each had a half hot pastrami on a French roll. I added Swiss cheese on mine. Aside from the regular mustard and ketchup on the table, they offer a hot mustard - if you like a good kick, I'd say yes! It'll come on the side, so you can add as little or as much as you want. We shared the chili fries with cheese. We didn't even finish them because of how big they were. Lol! Lastly, we thought why the heck not for a slice of apple pie à la mode. Johnnie's Pastrami just gets better every time we go. We got take away this time and it was perfect. They know how to make a rare burger and the meat is the best. They also have great fries. Parking is in their lot for free. It has counter and booth seating. It also has a wonderful outdoor patio. The place is always spotless. The cooks there are great, if you want something special they will help you. The entire staff is friendly and fast. Many of the servers have been there for years. Their pastrami sandwiches are the best. Always ask them to double dip the roll in their great au jus sauce. We just love them and they are packed with delicious pastrami. They have a full menu. Hands down best pastrami in LA and I'll put the rent money on it. Always a vibe when you come and service is top tier. My boyfriend and I have been checking out all the pastrami joints in the LA-area, so we had to check out Johnnie's Pastrami. They have their own private parking behind the restaurant so slow down so you don't miss the turn in. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat inside to experience the old school diner but the seats were tight and not too comfortable. We might have been better off in their outdoor seating area. We shared the Hot Pastrami ($21.95), a Chili Fries ($14.95), and a Coke ($4.95). It was nice that they cut the sandwich and served it in separate trays for us. So the moment we've been waiting for. That super thin pastrami... ... ... Mhmm it's thin but it's lacking flavor and moisture. Unfortunately the chili cheese fries weren't too special either. The fries could have been more crispy. In the Johnnie's vs Johnny's battle. I am team Johnnys. In the thin pastrami battle, I prefer The Hat's pastrami for a better value meal. I felt as if I was in a New York Deli! I wanted Pastrami and ordered Uber Eats. Johnnie's Pastrami in Culver City popped up. I gave the driver an additional tip since she drove so far. I called to confirm the order. The woman I spoke with told me the pastrami is double dipped. She wasn't kidding. The pastrami was hell of moist, meaty and oh so tasty. Did I mention it was huge! A hefty appetite could eat the whole sandwich. I did pick at the second sandwich I definitely recommend Johnnie's if you want a filling and satisfying Pastrami sandwich. It was really good. My family from the Philippines visited LA and I took them here. The place itself is a smaller, cozier diner, but the serving portions were big and absolutely delicious. I would give them 3.5 stars if I could. Solid enough sandwich, it was served almost immediately after I ordered it. But I couldn't tell it was fried shrimp, I originally thought it was just fried fish. It's a simple sandwich, much like a Po Boy. Great pickles that serve as a much needed acid burst. One of my favorite pastrami restaurants in the Los Angeles area. I remember the first time I came here back in the early 1970s. There was a long line at the nearby Tito's Tacos, so we decided to hit Johnnie's instead. Good move. Johnnie's quickly became my #1 pastrami place in L.A. Over the years, Johnnie's has become more of a tourist destination than a local eatery. Post-covid, their prices have gone up, but then where haven't they gone up? On this most recent visit, I didn't get my usual pastrami but tried the Bob's Special Hot Corned Beef. Very good. I was reminded that these pastrami and corned beef sandwiches are best if eaten while they're still hot. Back in my working days, we had many a sandwich run to Johnnie's, and while they were still good after the 45-minute trip back to work, they weren't quite as good once they had cooled down compared to what could have been obtained if the sandwiches had been consumed at Johnnie's. I don't know how anyone can give anything less than 5 stars for Johnnie's pastrami sandwich! I've been coming here for over 30 years and it has consistently been excellent. They have NEVER dropped in quality or portion! The price has gone up in 30 years but that is normal and better than a shrinkflation issue. The service is always stellar! Same ladies serving the best sandwiches for years and i appreciate seeing their kind faces everytime. The restaurant is clean and old school quaint. The patios are my favorite places to eat. The location is small inside, but there is plenty of outdoor seating. The service was prompt and very friendly. We ordered the Deluxe Pastrami plate which came with a huge pastrami sandwich, a large helping of fries, and coleslaw. The slaw was fantastic and had great flavor. The fries were very good, but I felt they needed more flavor. But my friend thought they were perfect. The pastrami was good, but not the best that I have ever had. The sandwich was huge with plenty of meat. But it only consisted of meat and dry bread. They had mustard on the table which helped. Now this is a good ole classic that my family and I never fail to visit when we go back to LA! The interior and exterior have a classic diner and old school vibe to it, which I love because it's always been the same since I was younger. The staff are always kind, very friendly and extremely welcoming! To start we ordered some onion rings, and our waitress brought out ketchup and their special spicy mustard for us to mix and dip the onion ring in! Be sure to taste test that spicy mustard btw because it definitely has a horseradish strong kick to it. Now onto the biggest delight the Johnnie's pastrami sandwich! Came here on August 30th, and I need to come back here asap. I came here for lunch with my mom as this was my first time coming here. Johnnies did not disappoint. We both got Pastrami Sandwiches with extra mustard and fries. The food was so good. The meat was fresh hot and very meaty. You know how you go to some places and the meat isn't that thick. Well, I know this is an iconic establishment and I was excited to share a meal with my friend there. Super crowded on a Sunday, but we snagged a table inside. Service was okay enough. The corned beef sandwich was a huge portion. The rye bread was delicious... and cole slaw was delicious! The meat itself tasted okay not fabulous. As an ex-pat New Yorker, and a lover of "deli" food especially corned beef, I have had better sandwiches in other places here in Los Angeles. The pickles and fries were great!!! It's been a while since my last visit but I really wanted a Johnnie's pastrami and I would not be denied. The prices keep going up but when something is this good, there are items you must bid the bullet to have. There is just nothing like a Johnnie's pastrami. For some STRANGE reason, my wife wanted a corned beef sandwich instead. Blasphemy. But the heart wants what the heart wants so we decided to split the two sandwiches. My wife actually said she liked the corned beef better. MADNESS! It was pretty good but my heart remains faithful to the pastrami. The fries here are the old fashioned crinkle cut style fries. Yeah, people always talk to McDonald's but the containers are designed never to be full and so many fries are those little jagged daggers that are remnants of a whole fry. These are what fries were meant to be. Service was superb and my only gripe is the tiny parking lot where many drivers who apparently never passed a driver's test, attempt to park their cars. Don't be surprised if you have to park on Sepulveda. Just be careful opening your driver's side door because I guarantee 20% of the drivers could care less about anyone trying to exit their vehicle. read more

One of the places in the Los Angeles area that have been wanting to try to have a comparison with. Johnnie's Pastrami is an old establishment that has been around for decades and many have compared their pastrami to The Hat. The one significant difference I noticed was their price. For a Pastrami dip sandwich alone it was about $25 and as a combo or plate, it was about $31. So in comparison I can get a whole pastrami dip with fries for about $10.00 less at the Hat vs Johnnies. In taste, Johnnies was less saltier, however I think The Hat gives you more overall, especially the fries. I also ordered a chili dog. The chili was good, but again the price was considerably more. For the chili dog it was about $12. I definitely would not travel the distance to go to Johnnie's, but if in the area, I would eat here again. As The Hat is pretty much an order at the counter, fast food restaurant setup, and Johnnie's offers dine in table service.
