I live in Marin County, and work in Santa Rosa regularly. Never once did it cross my mind to go on a stay-cation there. But with a recent desire to support the community post-North Bay Fire and also to squeeze in some Sonoma County wine tasting, my partner and I decided on spending one night in Santa Rosa. Being aficionados of style and decor from the 50s-60s, we stumbled upon The Astro! And what a gem!! Upon arrival, Lisa the GM, greeted us. The front desk area was tastefully designed and decorated with incredible mid century modern furniture and finishing touches. Lisa was so friendly and welcoming! She offered us freshly baked cookies from a local restaurant, The Spinster Sisters, before showing us to our room. And that room, tho!!! We walked in and immediately were taken back in time. The pictures in the wall, the chosen color scheme, the furnishing, even the Eames-inspired coat hanger, it all was gorgeous. The bathroom tile work was stunningly. And the combination of modern touches (the push button shower start, for example) made the experience even more exciting. Oh, and the Casper bed was like sleeping on angel wings. We slept so soundly and did not wake once. The King suite was more than we expected. The property was very hip and chic. The common room where the coffee bar and pastries live was such a unique touch. We enjoyed every single minute of our stay, especially the ginger raisin muffins that were waiting for us! Delightful 1960s style motel that has been renovated in a funky retro style. Very comfortable bed, warm comforter, excellent pillows. The shower has two streams, a waterfall style that was so epic it moved me to wash my hair on a non-hair washing day, and a hand held. Great water pressure. Excellent locally made scones and muffins with tea and coffee are provided for breakfast. Short Lyft ride from Russian River Brewery. This place obviously shares my philosophy of "Have nothing that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." It is just so cute! I would definitely stay here again. read more

Was in town for the night really wanted a close place to downtown way overpriced for one night for a single person

My brothers and I took a sibling vacation and ended up booking a room at the Astro for a night. My two teenage brothers loved it and still rave about it. The vintage cameras, stunning artwork, clementine trees, and heavenly beds were some of the highlights for us. Not to mention the cleanliness and just overall customer service. This is such a fun place to stay! The rooms are all unique, and the energy is fun and funky! My boyfriend and I were looking to get out of town for the weekend, and stumbled upon the Astro. We love going up north and exploring wine country, and this place is the perfect place to stay. The beds were super comfortable and there is art in all the rooms, that you can purchase! Super cute place right across from the Luther Burbank Gardens. I would rate it higher, but there were some irksome issues. I messed around with the tv for a while trying to get a picture. Finally I called the front desk and she suggested I try turning something on in the back of the set, which worked. More worrying was the fact that I couldn't get any hot water from the shower, no matter how long I waited. On the plus side it was relatively inexpensive and the girl who checked me in was friendly. read more

BEWARE!!!! they will charge you a smoking charge even if you don't smoke in your room. Because I put a cigarette butt in my trash can in the room they assumed I smoked in the room. Come on that's the biggest bunch of BS of I've ever heard. They said oh we don't care how the smell gets in the room, even if it's on your clothes, your room smells like smoke we charge you. You have no recourse, it's their word against mine. I told them you can see me out on the street smoking, why would I smoke in my room. They don't care. NEVER EVER stay at this hotel. So $250 charge because I didn't think it was right to throw my butt on the street when I smoked. NICE JOB. read more

We had one night stay at this place, honestly, we didn't have too much expectation after reading some reviews, yet, to our surprise... it is very decent for what we paid for .. Starting from friendly staff, Nice compound, clean room, even the ground is cement but we brought our own slippers plus it is in the summer so really didn't bother us! The morning coffee and pastries were REALLY good! The only complaint - no sound proof wall so we were awakened by the snoring from next door .. we had to turn on the fan to suppress the snoring sound to be able to sleep again! read more

Stayed one night at the Astro Motel in Santa Rosa - Apparently it was completely renovated from the ground up in 2017 and I have to say, it was way above my expectations. This place is so charming - it may say 'motel' in the name, but this place is really a few steps above that in my opinion. They really try to bring local flavor to the hotel - if I was visiting Sonoma and wanted a romantic weekend stay, really couldn't do better. Room was spotlessly clean and very cool design. Bedding was super comfortable, clean, I believe Casper mattress and pillows. Staff was friendly and cool- it's obviously a hip place. they have a deal with some local businesses so you can get a discount if you are staying here. I didn't use it, so I can't say if it's worthwhile- but it looked good. Fresh local coffee (Flying Goat) and pastries in the morning. Not a full continental, but what's served is very high quality. I really can't find one thing to knock them for - the place is great, and for the price miles ahead of staying at the bigger hotel chains in the area. read more

A great find in Santa Rosa! We had a great stay at this charming retro styled hotel. We were blown away by the thoughtful design, creative looks and simplicity of this place. The staff was friendly and the room was clean. They have local snacks and drinks stocked for purchase in the mini fridge and in the mornings there is complimentary coffee/tea and a lovely selection of pastries and breakfast goods. Happy with a comfy bed and a clean bathroom, but blown away by the accommodations and clever details tied into the Astro. We will be staying here again. read more

If I could give Nora who worked at the front 1000 stars I would. She was AMAZING. I checked in just me and my baby and she was incredibly kind and helpful. Not only did she help me with my bags as I struggled with my daughter, she brought us a pack and play and set it up for us, RAN TO MY CAR to get a bag I forgot THEN brought me an iPhone charger to my room after I called the front desk desperate for charger. I wish there was people like her working everywhere. She was wonderful and I am so thankful for her hospitality!!!! read more

As a neighbor, watching the Astro go through the extensive remodel that has brought it up to where it is today has been so exciting. Both my partner and I have been involved in the recreation in various ways, as have many other people in the community - we are all thrilled to see such a unique, positive change to our neighborhood, and love the fact that local artists and makers have been utilized to put their mark on the place. The mid-century modern rooms and décor are something to see in and of themselves - each room is decorated differently, and the furnishings can be purchased (so cool)! I've got dibs on an Eames Chair, for the record. Most recently, the not-quite-finished motel opened its doors to evacuees and those displaced by the wine country fires, which was HUGELY heartwarming to see. Highly recommend! read more

What a joke. This place had the smallest, oldest, coldest rooms I have ever stayed in. It was located in the dirty area on Santa Rosa Ave around all the homeless. No pool. No spa. Nothing. Complimentary coffee bar and pastries in their chic lounge. Rooms are nice and include refrigerator, iron/board, and hair dryer. I will suggest including tissue, luggage and towel racks. I thoroughly enjoyed my entire stay here at Astro Hotel. I resided here for a total of 49 days, working as a volunteer to help remove debris due to the California fires late last year. The staff was very friendly, and I just want to give a big shout out to the hotel manager, Lisa, for being so accommodating and making me feel right at home. JUST SAY NO! Argumentative staff and forgetful. Prepare to bring your own utensils to the "fully stocked" kitchen unless you know how to eat with knives only. Watch your billing after the departure because there may be charges that you didn't see on final checkout. Oh..and the area is super sketchy and no one at the hotel seems to care. Who wants to be accosted by a homeless person at 8 and the office doors are locked. Stay away. read more

Check in was great. Lisa was really friendly, and we liked the escort to the room and when we said we were here for Osmosis Lisa gave us a little discount card. Thanks! Room was adorable. Fun and retro, unique period lighting. They really cleaned this place up. No carpet so we know the floor is actually clean. They're doing something different here. Don't expect chips and Bud in the mini bar. They have great local products that were priced OK. I would say: secure the art above the beds better. I touched a large metal sculpture that was hanging above where my head would have been and it fell off onto the pillow!! If you're going to have the best coffee in the world in the common room, maybe have something equal in quality for tea, like Numi, Tazo or 5-Star organic. Not Stash Tea and have good old black tea, not herbal and Earl Grey. And prime the pots for the water or it's just not hot enough to brew the tea. Why 1 star? The inconsiderate and rude morning staff. We were in a the middle of a Polar Vortex so the room was cold, and the heater was loud so I was either cold or awake from noise. Such is the life of a light sleeper. I'm used to it. Please, put an extra blanket in the room!! I'll just go have tea in the morning in the common area, meditate a bit on how lucky I am to be wherever we are and get on with my day. So, I stumble into the common room at 6:30 turned on the heater (please have staff do that!!!), I mumbled as I hugged the heater how cold my room was. Some woman wanted me to tell her more about it. I said no thanks I just want to have a tea and get warm. She insisted that I tell her so she could tell the manager-oh, I see, she works here. I insisted I was fine. She kept insisting, after 3 times I told her "Stop talking to me". She did get me a blanket, thank you. Five minutes later some guy is sitting down beside me asking me to tell him about my "experience with my room". I decline-it's 6:30 am, remember? He insists. I decline. He insists. Oh, wait, is he the manager???? Oh, OK, I say to him very politely: just let me drink my tea and we can discuss in 30 minutes. NOPE. I DON'T WANT TO DISCUSS A SITUATION THAT IS MOOT AT 6:30 AM. I WANT TO DRINK MY TEA AND BE LEFT ALONE. That's when I realized he was the manager and told him to just calm down, here's my room number. He immediately ran up the stairs to knock on the door of my room as I'm running out into the courtyard asking him to not do that as my boyfriend was sleeping. Why would I tell my room number to some random guy with unbrushed hair and shabby clothes (this is not a judgement just the description of the person who was trying to engage me in conversation at 6:30 a.m.) A PAYING GUEST WANTS TO SIT QUIETLY, DRINK THEIR TEA AND BE LEFT ALONE. Leave them alone. Sitting there. Drinking tea. That manager told me I should have no expectation of having a quiet, meditative time in a common space. Really?!?!? I was calm and polite UNTIL I WAS HARRASSED BY THE "DAY MANAGER". Now, he's blocking the door to the common room and I can't get back inside. It's 40 degrees out. You should have just left me alone to drink my tea. Instead you insult me and harrass me, wake up my partner for no reason and ruin what had been a wonderful stay. Finally, when we went to check out the person was on a personal call while we waited for 5 minutes. Hope she got the insurance all squared away on her Smart Car because now that she's retired she has to watch her money. Good to know. Excusing the personal call by saying you're just there to do your boss a favour was the icing on the cake. If you're there to work, well, then, you know, work. read more

I would not stay here again. The place was overpriced, which was not horrible, however the customer service was not what I expected for the price of the room. I booked through Airbnb to use my Airbnb gift card. When checking in the front desk asked for my card, which I thought was for incidentals only. They then bypassed the Airbnb app and charged me directly as a walk in so I was unable to use my Airbnb app gift card. When given the chance to correct their mistake they informed me that the accounting is just too complicated. So I payed for their mistake because the solution was too complicated. Sad...
