I can no longer recommend Atypical Mechanic after how they have recently treated me…read more I originally used them in 2021 and left a 5* review for them, but the short story is they quoted me a flat $120 diagnostic fee, showed up and did the diagnostic and asked for $240. We were able to work that out, I thought, and I left a 5* review as they did do the diagnostic I paid for. Fast forward to February of 2022 and I had them back for a different problem, and they diagnosed the problem as needing a right front wheel bearing. Took the car to Juke and did the job and that didn't fix the problem at all. After some diagnosis at Juke, they said I would need the left front wheel bearing and new engine mounts to fix the problem. $2,000 in repairs later, the problem went away. I never left Atypical a bad review for their diagnosis even though it was only 1/3 of the problem. Lucky for me, Juke was nice enough to waive their diagnostic fee to find the real problem. Fast forward to 2023 and I emailed them for a few price quotes for other jobs. After some back and forth, they told me they are "not the best fit for [my] mechanic needs moving forward." I don't remember anything happening when they did the diagnosis in 2022 other than their tech leaving an expensive tool in my vehicle which I contacted them to return. I guess they finally decided they were mad from 2021 that they didn't get another $120 out of me? I don't know. I asked for clarification on what their issue is but they refused to explain if it was anything other than the first incident. I've paid my invoices and have no issues with Atypical Mechanic, so I'm not sure what their issue is with me. UPDATE 03/29/23: Jeremy makes two points in his response. First, that I knew the diagnostic fee was hourly. This is incorrect, and his original message says: "Our evaluation fee is $120. This is also our hourly fee so if your evaluation is under an hour the remainder of that fee would go towards the repair." The first sentence says the evaluation fee is flat rate $120, not hourly, and only talks about a discount applied to the hourly rate for repair. It's poor wording on his part, and when we spoke on the phone Jeremy seemed to understand where I was coming from. Apparently that was not the case, and two years later he still feels like he is in the right and I'm combative. Second, he says I cancelled multiple appointments within an hour which is just a blatant line. I looked over all of the emails, and here are the timelines for all of my appointments: 01/31/22 @ 3:02pm: appointment scheduled for 02/11/22 @ 1:30pm 02/10/22 @ 2:57pm: rescheduled appointment for 02/14/22 @ 11:30am (22 hours in advance) 02/14/22: appointment kept and paid $120 diagnosis 02/14/22 @ 3:49pm: appointment scheduled for 02/24/22 @ 1:30pm 02/23/22 @ 7:34am: appointment cancelled (29 hours in advance) With Atypical's appointments running 2 weeks in advance at that time, it was hard to know my schedule that far out. I rescheduled and cancelled when I found out I would not be available. 22 & 29 hours does not seem egregious to me, and I'm sure you filled those holes if you were booking 2 weeks out. But to say I cancelled MULTIPLE TIMES and WITHIN AN HOUR is an outright lie. You can say that you found me combative, but don't lie, Jeremy. Not a good look when I can pull up the times from my email to prove you're wrong.

Had to find a diesel mechanic that was good, could fit us in, and wouldn't break the bank. Dependable Diesel was recommended to us by a fellow camper. Took our truck there. They diagnosed the issue as a bad DPF sensor along with finding a couple other items that would eventually cause us some issues if not addressed. Unfortunately, we only had the truck and the thought of being stranded at the shop all day waiting for my truck to be fixed was not good. Luckily, they had a loaner car that they offered to us. That was a life saver as we were about 20 miles from the shop. Needless to say, they were able to get my truck fixed in a couple of hours and were able to send us on our way. What I thought was going to be a harsh diagnosis and a dreaded trip to the impound, Jack (shout out to the chillest and most friendly mechanic I've had the please of interacting with to date) quickly determined that the battery itself was the primary concern, and is in the process of ordering a new one that will keep my car running just the right amount of time needed to complete my moving out objectives. I genuinely had prepared myself for spending $300+ just to determine that the car was worthless overall, instead I've been ecstatically informed that it has new life and can be sold at a reasonable value on the market. Even if they had genuinely informed me that the car was indeed out of commission, I would trust their word more so than many a family members these days, that is how honest and forthright Steve's Mobile Auto Care is as a whole. The entire experience, from my initial text to this unexpected positive turn of events, has been other worldly as far as auto mechanics go. There haven't been any "diagnostic fees" accompanied by terminology and long winded explanations that only a veteran mechanic would understand. No 3-4 page "invoices" that detail how horrifically I've been treating my car, and guilt inducing "well if only you had" monologues implying I'm the worst car owner they've ever come across. Just straight forward, easy going and trustworthy communication, incredibly relaxed scheduling process, and the wholesome feeling that I haven't been taken for a ride (not the good kind) and endured a significant hit to my wallet. Technician Jack came out to our house and in the driveway and with some test driving quickly determined it was two different mounts that needed to be replaced. The two mounts were completely shot. I mean bad. Jack managed to change the mounts in our driveway with just a floor jack to lift the engine. Jack knows what he is doing and does everything fast. Pretty amazing actually. I found Abee's through a service provider recommendation via Amazon after deciding to purchase a…read morereplacement part myself instead of paying twice the amount at a dealership. The appointment was made conveniently through Amazon and I was contacted by Abee's very promptly with time/date options for the part to be installed. The service (replacement of a headlamp on a vehicle that requires the bumper to be taken off) was done correctly and exceptionally fast, plus was half of what I was quoted by a dealership and still cheaper than other shops I called. I was told it would take roughly an hour but they were finished so quickly I was able to actually stay and get a state inspection in under the original 60 minute quote. They made sure to walk me through what was done and make sure I was happy with the work before going further which I found to be very professional. The location is fairly out of my way in north Austin but I will definitely consider returning for future maintenance considering the quality of the work and friendliness of the staff. They also are spanish language friendly which can also be a huge plus in the area. Can't recommend them enough considering they saved me over $300 and a lot of hassle with dealerships that couldn't even bother to answer their phones or return calls when messages were made (looking at you, Roger Beasley Mazda Central and South).

And who among us has not felt they were taken advantage of when the bill arrives? Yup, unless you're mechanically inclined, it can be tough to know if the repairs are legitimate. After getting suspiciously high repair estimate from my friendly local dealer (whose name I won't mention to protect the guilty), I looked for a second opinion and found All Tune on Yelp. They were busy but were able to get me into the shop a week later. Well, it took all of 15 minutes to determine that I didn't need any of the recommended repairs. All Tune took the time to show me the parts in question and treated me respectfully. They also looked up my service schedule and let me know when I would really need to perform maintenance. Even more, they didn't charge me for their time. I'll be bringing my car back to All Tune when I need service. These guys are the real deal, the bomb. Thank you All Tune! Highly highly recommended.
