I have always wanted to dine at The Back Deck so today we traveled from Richmond VA to Virginia Beach and decided we would dine there. I ordered the fish tacos, my husband had the Scallop cake slider & 2 Mediterranean Salad which was delicious. I have to say that although the Fish Taco had good flavor the fish was nearly absent. Dissatisfied because it's supposed to be a fish taco and I believe there was maybe a small skinny strip of fish. The iced tea was super good too. read more

No real meals, finger food only. Steamed clams were full of sand. We gave up on a dozen after 3 of the first 5 started with a CRUNCH. Tuna tacos were good, conversely there was minimal tuna to be found in the tuna melt. Alcoholic drink was a heavy pour (probably catering to the crowd, see below). Sweet tea tasted like it was poured from a can. Service - wait staff helping our waiter apologized for dirty clams but nothing was taken off or discounted from the check. When we asked for utensils (one 'spear' came with clams, we were given 2 more 'spears!' Ambiance- outside deck, mostly 20 something crowd with loud music. In summary, we will not return. read more

BEST crab cakes we've had in a very long time. Stop here several times a year when I'm visiting family. Cozy place on the water. Greek salad with s crab cake added is best. They always have fresh produce. Haven't been here lately for about a year and not sure what's going on if anything. We've never had an issue with their hospitality. Today it was lacking. On the phone and when we camein to eat this afternoon. Maybe they need a little refresher class on the hospitality aspect of things. We still love the food here. Almost forgot the she crab soup is to die for. A must try. We'll give them another try next month to see if they've worked on their approach and in dealing with guests. To say this place is confusing to find is an understatement. Let me start off by saying "Back Deck" is in the same building as "The Shell Fish Co." The restaurant is located off the water off a back deck.... go figure. Knowing this helps tremendously. If only I had read Troy's first review. Parking was somewhat challenging with it having a shared lot with Bubba's. Still spaces were available at 6 PM, but when leaving after 7 PM it looked full. We found parking in the gravel lot and upon getting out of the car immediately noticed the smell of rotting fish carcus from the dumpster beside where we parked...not a good start. However, once you got away from that area and into the restaurant your in good shape and no smell to speak of... thank goodness. Many of the other reviews had this pegged as mainly an adults place, but I decided to take my son any way. We got onto the deck as the sun was just setting and the view was nothing short of spectacular. Pleasure House Natural Area is visible by looking out to your right. I know a shameless plug for what I think is thee premier real-estate in Virginia Beach... and Virginia Beach now owns it! Waitress was good to start off with, but quickly fizzled and disappeared through most of our meal with almost no follow up. We we were seated off the bar at a table. I was hoping for a Friday happy hour, but it is limited to M-TH. The food was pretty medicore unfortunately. I got the fish tacos and my son the boneless chicken not on the menu. My tacos were way over seasoned and too spicy for my taste. I am careful to note "my taste" because I am a whimp with spicy foods. My son said he really did not care of the chicken, but I tried and thought it was fine. Another waitress ended up bringing the bill, which was correct... but pricy for what we got. Fish tacos, chicken chunks a lemonade and beer $30+ w/o tip. As a Happy Hour place, which this visit was not, I am positive my review would be completely different. Brought my best friend when she was visiting, as I heard amazing things, unfortunately we both didn't have the experience that had been promised. We got cocktails - and both felt they were the worst we had had in years. My orange crush was ok, but was basically just a straight glass of store-bought orange juice - too sweet and thick to even drink. I left the majority of it at the bar as it was too bad to drink. My best friend had the flattest most watered-down rum and coke I've ever seen. I was never really down for peel and eat shrimp but the pound for $12 is a excellent! Those bugs were seasoned nice and hefty so make sure you plans not to use your phone until you clean your plate! I attacked those things like I hadn't ate in 3 years. My favorite drink here is the What The Duck. Sure, I'm the typical craft beer snob and don't do liquor drinks that often but the WTD tastes like an adult version of a strawberry Freeze Pop! The sunsets here are perfect. Enjoying a tasty beverage, while the ball of fire in the sky sinks into the ocean, is a different kind of peaceful. This place had a very casual, laid back atmosphere. When we first walked in, we were not greeted by anyone and later found that we should seat ourselves. After finding a table, we sat there for half an hour before anyone came to take our drink orders. I can tell that it's definitely one of those places that favor regulars! This is a beach dive bar that provides cheap drinks and a basic menus of oysters, fish tacos, flatbreads and salads. The raw oysters were okay, and while the shells were large, the meat inside was minuscule. The crab dip was good, but you'll be fishing for crab. The pork tacos were decent, and had a wonderful smoked flavor, but the meat was dried out. Service seemed uncoordinated, and possibly understaffed the night we went. The atmosphere of this place is very laid back. This place is a bit hidden when searching for it. It is located on the back porch of Shellfish Co, right next to Bubba's seafood. There is an entrance right next to the seafood market or just walk through the market for another entrance. I usually come to this place for their taco Tuesday specials. After 3pm, this place has great daily specials on their food and drinks. They have a good variety of beers and drinks to choose from. Every Tuesday from 3-7pm, their fish tacos are only $2. I personally think they're just okay, nothing to rave about. I do like the mango salsa they add on top. Nonetheless, they're still worth the cheap price. They have a crap dip on the appetizers list that is great! They do have other seafood to choose from such as crab legs and oysters. I do want to give those a try on a future visit. First time going here after work for drinks. I wanted a dog friendly place to enjoy the last bit of warm weather of the year. The drinks were decent, I got a $8 pitcher of strawberry mimosas, and a few appetizers. The oysters were fresh and delicious. They were kind enough to give my dog a fresh bowl of iced water and figured out a way to make me grilled chicken to feed him since we ended up staying longer than intended. It's been a long time since I've been here. But they have updated the menu since and expanded it quite a bit. Their mango crushes are good! My friend and I chilled under the covered area that is situated as a bar area facing the water. I opted for the tuna tacos and they were delicious! They were a good size and came with three tacos. Our waitress was friendly and proficient. She made sure we were covered on drinks. Overall a nice place to kick back without the super heavy crowds. Glad we did! There's a small market where you can order fresh seafood to go, T-shirt's, home decor, etc. The restaurant area is on back. Nice set up. Worst service ever! The waitress has very bad attitude since we came into the restaurant. The view is amazing, but with that bad attitude, definitely won't come back again. So this is what happen... We came in without knowing it's a self serve restaurant. We asked for table for 2, and she walked passed by without acknowledging us. Then we asked her again, okay she said. Another server came back, and told us it's self serve. The bad attitude waitress came back to take the order, and told us that we're not allow to sit at the bar. After finally coming back was told my order was next to be cooked!!!!! Was never asked how things were, was anything needed. Manager explained their system doesn't assign waitstaff to areas. For some reason we couldn't get salt on our margaritas. The oysters we ordered as a starter came midway through the meal, and I had lost interest at that point. My partner said they were good, however. My request to speak with the manager (about the spotty service) was apparently not communicated to her. When I tracked her down myself, Her only only response was "we are training new staff." It was great to sit at the water's edge with family and friends on a summer evening. We came here to take our visitors from out of town here for a dock view restaurant. This place is located off Shore Drive next to Bubbas seafood restaurant. They have a small seating area outside of the seafood market that has clear windows. They can be opened to let some fresh air in as well. An outdoors area is available to eat right off the deck. We came here during happy hour 3-7 Mon-Thurs and they have pretty good deals. They have $4.50 crushes and under $3 beers and well drinks. Also they offer 75 cent oysters. On Mondays, they have $12 lb of crab legs. We got the fish tacos, dozen oysters, and a lb of crab legs. The fish tacos were okay not the best. The tortilla was tough and it was a little bland. Wouldn't get it again. The oysters and crab legs were good though as they were cheap and fresh. I would only come here though for the seafood and views. The Back Deck offers my favorite view and outdoor atmosphere in the Chicks Beach/Shore Drive area. The drinks are good, they offer daily specials, and the mood is casual. The food is usually decent, too, but tonight was an exception. My beautiful steamed shrimp were so over cooked that I had a hard time peeling them. The shell was stuck to the shrimp so badly because they were cooked too long. The head of the shrimp was actually crusty and the texture was terrible. I could only eat about a third of the shrimp. When the waitress asked if I wanted a to go box, I told her that I couldn't even eat them because they were way over cooked. She replied nicely that she was "sorry about that," but offered no substitute, new shrimp, discount, etc. They offer a fairly basic limited menu, so I feel that they should prepare their food well, or at least acceptably. read more

I love the Back Deck! It is a cozy little bar on the water behind the Shellfish Company. The people that work there are friendly and the people that go there (when I've been there) are laid back and cool. Today I stopped in on the way to work and was greeted by the girls that work there and I ordered an iced tea and Scallop Sliders. I see they have a shrimp salad on salad and I'll have to try that soon. The view was great - on the water of Lynnhaven Inlet - gulls, glistening water, pelicans, and boats going by add to the the feeling of being in Key West or any other great tropical paradise. The Scallop Sliders came with chips and they had a great flavor!! They came with an aole sauce and it had a nice kick. Fantastic lunch prior to work. I can't wait to return and try some more dishes. I would like to give this place a better rating, but I wasn't too impressed with the service, which I will go into more detail later. The atmosphere was great! You can either walk through the Shellfish Company's store or around the side of the restaurant to get in. It overlooks the water, and is just a calm environment (of course depending on the crowd that's there at the time). It was such a beautiful day to sit by the water. I liked that you can see the bar from wherever you're sitting. I also noticed they have shutters to enclose the deck if it starts to rain, which is definitely a plus. After sitting down, it took a few minutes for a server to approach us. Then, once we get a drink menu, we had to wait again to place our drink order. Once we got our drinks, she didn't come back to take our food order until I flagged her down. There was an older couple that sat down next to us and they were attended to right away. They also got their food and drinks at a significantly faster pace than we did. It was even busier when they got there. Hopefully the situation won't repeat itself the next time I visit or I may not want to go again. Despite the service, I was pleased with the food! I ordered the scallop sliders, which is something I have never seen at anther restaurant. They were AMAZING! I loved that the scallops melted in your mouth and were so flavorful. The sauce that came with it also was a great addition to the sandwich. My boyfriend had the fish tacos, and those were very delicious as well. I would come back again just for those sliders! The drinks were okay, but were small even for happy hour. I'll have to look more at the drink menu next time. read more
