Stopped by Gran Patron on the Oceanfront in VA Beach and had an amazing experience thanks to Melody Da Queen. She's welcoming, confident, and clearly knows her craft. She made me a margarita that wasn't even on the menu fresh, smooth, perfectly balanced with just the right kick. If you go, ask for the "Melody Margarita." You won't regret it. We came here on a Monday evening to grab dinner. They had both indoor and outdoor seating but everyone was seating indoor that evening due to a storm warning. The dining space was cozy with a mix of tables, booths and bar seating. They had huge windows that had good view of the ocean. The menu was huge, filled with a variety of Mexican dishes. The drinks menu also had plenty of choices, including Margarita flight that came with four flavors, coconut, mango, strawberry and blue lagoon. I ordered it regular tequila and didn't feel much alcohol despite drinking all four within a short time. For entree I got the Baja trio tacos. I liked how the tortilla was cooked with melted cheese, fish was fine, but tomatoes and lettuce were just thrown on top, made the dish little unappealing. The service was okay. Our server was enthusiastic but half of the time she was invisible. We ordered fresh guacamole that never came, and she couldn't tell until she came us at the end of the dinner. We also had to ask another waitress for extra plates. When I was walking to restroom, she was busy hanging out with a group of other servers by the reception desk. Probably the reason she was MIA around the tables. Probably this is the best Mexican option in the vicinity, but the food, drinks and service has room to improve a lot. read more

This place has a beautiful atmosphere and a great vibe, which is why this experience was so disappointing. We started on the patio but had to move inside because of the cold and wind. That part was handled fine. The real issue was the wait time. We waited well over an hour for our food, and there was no acknowledgment or explanation from the staff. Instead of addressing the delay, they just kept bringing drinks. It was also frustrating to see staff standing around while we were still waiting. Once the food finally came out, it was good, but by that point the experience was already negative. To make things worse, there were flies inside the restaurant, and we had to keep fanning them away while trying to eat. That's not something you expect when dining indoors. Between the excessive wait and the flies, the overall experience was poor. The food wasn't enough to make up for it, and I won't be coming back. read more

Mackenzie was a great server! We stopped in for drinks and snacks. We were told to sit wherever we liked so chose a fantastic high top on the porch overlooking the boardwalk and ocean. Huge cups of water were brought and we enjoyed the Long Island Iced Tea and Vodka soda with the chips (meh) and salsa (mild, good), and a seemingly Miracle Whip spicy dip. The Bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers were cooked just right with a bit of crisp to the jalapeno. Mexican cheese oozed out and bacon was crispy. 5 little devils! The food here was magnificent, I had the Baja Trio Tacos which was just Octopus tacos, really spoiled my tastebuds after that. The server was top notch as well, plus there was a photographer giving free postal card photos which was a bonus. Overall, very great experience. read more

Traveling from New Jersey. We stopped by late afternoon just for a quick bite with the family. Sat outside and it was pretty good. Server was a little lost and didn't know the menu very well (they were also out of a few things of the menu). We ended up ordering the appetizer platter which was pretty good overall. Drinks were good too but the "el jefe" margarita was way too expensive and they don't tell you how much it is until the bill comes out. We've wanted to try this place all summer, since we saw they took the place of the old Oscar's restaurant which was beautifully decorated. Yesterday, we brought my dad and were able to sit outside on their pretty wrap-around patio facing the ocean. Views were wonderful and our server was sweet, but had a ton of tables inside also so she took forever to bring us things we asked for. There were like a half-dozen servers inside with nothing to do so I think whoever is covering the patio should probably not have tables inside too. The menu is huge and they have like a dozen burritos, enchiladas and other options. Everything sounded good. We chose several things: Burrito California Fajitas for Two Steak Quesadilla The burrito was OK. The fajitas came like 10 minutes after the other food and wasn't hot at all or steaming when they arrived so it's like they forgot to bring them and they just sat in the back... not good. The star of the show was the quesadilla my dad got which was steak and it was AMAZING. If I have a craving, I will come back and get this. The chips were also cold but salsa was good. No white sauce given. I don't think we'll be back any time soon. It was pretty expensive and the food was only so-so and it was cold. read more

Food was good, large portions, distinct flavors and presented simply but beautifully. Beer was cold refreshing and at the happy hour prices easy on the wallet. The cheese cake was good and would have been better without the sprinkles (my only complaint). The service was excellent with just enough checking in on the right times and made everyone feel good from the welcome to the good bye. Amazing!! On boardwalk , patios, view of ocean. Didn't see the inside but noticed it was open air last night. Extensive drink menu. Had to try the margaritas flight . Enjoyed the different flavor. Peach ,Mango, Strawberry and Raspberry, draw back , went down way too easily. My Husband got the large house frozen margarita. Was strong but very good. Now food! Large menu took a while to decide. We both got burritos. Huge and excellent. I got burritos, the carnitas for me and my husband had the steak, shrimp and chicken one. Huge in size ! Took more than 1/2 home. Had it for lunch today . Still enough for lunch tomorrow. Service was very good , but not annoying. Only complaint is the wandering photographer. Popular in the south but I don't like it in restaurants. The main attraction for this restaurant was its proximity to my hotel at the beach (Holiday Inn Express), but they also had the very attractive outdoor dining area overlooking the beach, and a chalkboard with some competitive leave priced lunch entrees. One of the daily specials was a fajita quesadilla plate with salad and rice or beans for $12. I decided to take a chance and I'm glad I did. The fajita quesadilla was well prepared and very tasty perfectly seasoned. I got it to go today and down to the beach and it was packaged very well. I was impressed enough with the service and food that I returned the following day for inside dining, although I ended up on veranda. On this occasion I have the full-fledged version of fajitas with beef and chicken along with charro beans and a salad. It was excellent. The service was friendly, but the server took an inordinately long time after providing us with our drinks to return to take our order. Forgot the feeling. It must have been time for a shift change, because the person who ended up giving us our bill was not the one who'd been trying to wait on this earlier in the meal. All said, I heartedly recommend this as an option if you are looking for tasty Mexican food at reasonable prices at Virginia Beach. read more

The service was quite slow. I couldn't identify the waiter or waitress; I only caught whoever came by. The problem was that only one person spoke English. Our drinks didn't arrive at the same time. We had to remind someone twice to bring our drinks. My grandson's mac and cheese, as shown in the pictures, was the last to arrive (30 minutes after we got our food) and looked quite like boxed mac and cheese. On the bright side, his fries were hot. Besides the fajitas, most of the food seemed reheated and quite dry. For example, the plates were hot. We were there during the day; however, the food seemed old and overcooked, lacking the freshness you'd expect. We will not return, feeling very disappointed. read more

Went to this new restaurant while in town for vacation and after the first time I knew I had to be back for round 2. The second time was even better of an experience than the first one! The chips at the beginning were warm and fresh. The food came out very quickly and very very hot fresh off the grill the cheese continued to melt as I kept eating. Overall 10/10 with flavor and taste. Service was 9/10 server was around but when we needed something we could not find him. Very good at listening and everything came out correctly. When it comes to the atmosphere, it felt relaxing with a little bit of a Spanish twist. The music was great, and the decoration was perfect. Unfortunately no mariachi band that would have made it amazing. Overall I recommend going to this place and enjoying it!! read more

New Mexican place on boardwalk. I didn't like white sauce with the chips. It's a Virginia east coast thing anyway and different in every restaurant. Chips didn't come with salsa, strange. Wife liked her drink and food. Food came out fast. My tacos were good not great beans bland. It's a little pricey but you are at the beach. It's an average Mexican restaurant. I just left this restaurant and have to say the staff was the most aggressive and combative I've ever experienced. I ordered the el Jeffe margarita which was decent but way overpriced. I had also ordered the Molcajete Ciero because it had octopus and other seafood. The waitress brought me the plain Molcajete. Not knowing this I moved a pepper to see where the fish was. Somehow I touched my lips and the capsaicin was so potent it burned my entire mouth. It took 2 large glasses of milk to alleviate the pain. My face is STILL bright red. When I complained to the waitress she brought the manager over. Both of them seemed dubious that this had happened despite my obvious distress and were insincere and combative. The end story is this was a horrible experience and a warning not to waste your time or tastebuds. read more

We visited Gran Patron twice while in town during a three day visit. It was easy to get seated, however it seemed like perhaps the restaurant may still be getting into the swing of things. For example, during the first visit, our drink orders came out about the same time as the food. During our second visit, we were seated quickly, however it took a little while for someone to be assigned to wait our table. That being said, you really can't beat the ambiance; The open air seating along the boardwalk was really nice, especially with the dolphins swimming along the shoreline. read more

I live in the area and I've been here twice. The first time i sat outside with friends and it was lovely, decent food and drinks, very friendly service and the view is great. The second time I went with my husband and we had 2 friends meeting us. The restaurant was slow (only 2 other tables sitting on the patio) and we sat outside. The music was very loud so I tried to find a table that wasn't close to the speaker, but there were speakers everywhere. I assumed that the volume setting was an accident. We sat down I asked the hostess and our waiter (2x) to have the manager turn down the music. We statyed long enough to have a drink but then closed our tab and left. They missed out on 4 top of people who were ready to eat and drink alot. This isn't a night club (I'm from NYC) this is 2pm at the oceanfront. Whomever ignored our requested should think more about the comfort of the customer. read more
