The Backroom is Folsom's newest (and only extant) speakeasy, having just opened a few weekends ago. It is open on Friday and Saturday nights only, from 7pm to close. Although it is located inside of Gaslight Co., The Backroom is its own separate establishment, with a completely different bar, ambiance, and atmosphere. After reading a few newspaper articles about The Backroom, I had found them on Instagram ( @thebackroom_folsom ), and sent them a message. I wanted to make reservations for 4 for after the Yelp event at Cafe Xocolatl, which was still several days away at the time. I was surprised to find that they were already mostly booked up. The only spots they had left were 8:45 and 10:15, so, I asked for the earlier one. We arrived just on time, walking into Gaslight Co. at about 8:44p.m. After being unable to get the attention of any of the bartenders or hostesses, we walked around to the back. By the time we found the door, it was 8:48. To get to the Backroom, you first have to go through Gaslight Co. The door for The Backroom is located all the way in the back of the restaurant, on the other side of the bar, next to the kitchen window. There is a hostess podium set up in front of it. We were told that our table was still being used by the party before us, but would be available shortly. This seemed a little odd, but at least it meant that we were not late. We stood there waiting for twenty minutes. When I noticed that it was 9:10, we were still waiting, but a party who had a reservation at 9:45 was being seated. At this point, it was starting to feel like the hostess was only letting in the youngest, hottest people, and we just weren't making the cut. Like that one SATC episode. IYKYK. I sent a message to the manager on Instagram, letting her know how long we'd been waiting for our table. A moment later, the hostess came out to ask us if we were ready to be seated. (We were more than ready.) We were seated in four large white sofa style chairs in the corner, with a view of the entire room. The ambiance reminded me a little bit of Clayton Club, except not quite as expensive-looking. The hostess reminded us that reservations are only for 90 minutes, "so that everyone can have a chance to enjoy this space." I refrained from asking her whether that included the time we had spent waiting inside of Gaslight Co., which had been raging with drunken 21 year old human sardines. After a few minutes, a bartender came over to introduce himself. We told him we needed a few minutes, and didn't hear from him ever again. About fifteen minutes later, a different bartender came by to take our order, which she then immediately made, and brought out to us. My friends ordered cosmos and lemon drops, while I ordered a cranberry vodka. The only drink I tried was my own, and it was good. The prices were high, but the drinks were strong. Although the room was decorated like a speakeasy, it didn't quite feel like one to us. Frankly, we were expecting an older, calmer crowd. We were probably the only ones there older than 23. After the bartender dropped off our drinks, we didn't see her again until all of the drinks had been empty for several minutes. We were less than impressed with the absence of napkins and the failure to check on our drinks, but at least the drinks were good. By 9:30, we were getting really hungry, and wanted to go somewhere where we could get more attention from our server, so, we decided to leave after just one drink each. Overall, I love the concept of this speakeasy. The environment of The Backroom itself is really nice, although you have to brave walking through a practical nightclub to get there. This experience was a little shaky, but that's probably because they are still new, and are currently overwhelmed with throngs of people wanting to check them out. I have a feeling it'll get better as time goes on, after some of the hype dies down, so I'll probably wait until then to come back.

I made reservations right when they open we showed up and were immediately seated. We were the only ones in the speakeasy for a while it was amazing. The bartenders Jessie and Katie were awesome they did such an amazing job. We put our trust in Jessie to make us some amazing drinks and he did not disappoint. We got to sample a few drinks that will soon be on the menu and I see why they will be. Stop in say hi to Jessie and Katie, and try some amazing beverages.

Located behind the Gaslight & Co bar, it was a little hard to find. We showed up five minutes before opening and we were able to get in within ten-ish minutes or so. Service was good! Drinks, mostly around the $20 price point. The drinks were also good. Not mind blowing though. But I am happy to see a speakeasy in Folsom and we would love to come again just because of the nice ambience and fun experience. Can't wait for their drinks to continue to evolve and improve over time and see how this place grows!

Tucked away in the back of The Gaslight Co is Folsom's one and only speakeasy. We stumbled across this place by accident, but we were pleasantly surprised when they had availability for a party of our size (we were a group of 8!). The atmosphere was dark and plush which was quite enjoyable. The artwork was cool. The couches, chairs, and ottomans were comfortable. We settled in. Our server had great recommendations from the menu after asking some preference questions. Everyone really enjoyed their drinks. It's a pretty big menu with lots of different types of drinks to try. The only drawback was the price. I've been to many speakeasys in amazing locales, and though the drinks were great, they didn't warrant the prices (some as pushing $30!).

If you are in town and want some place cool to hang out, this is worth trying. If you are looking for a cool speakeasy experience in the Sacramento region, probably try the Roost downtown. If you are just looking for a good cocktail and don't mind the distance, JJ Pfister is amazing. Ok- let's start with the experience. It's not difficult to get a spot through their social. They respond promptly and are amazing! The speakeasy wow factor is lacking because...you just walk through a locked door after checking in with the hostess. Honestly this is where one star is taken off. No one can read the menu. It's so poorly designed that the staff only tells you, "Oo give a second for your eyes to adjust to the dark." Sorry no. If you print in the negative space (print the dark background on glossy white paper) and the scripted font size is 9, no one can read it. Staff is knowledgeable. Pricing is...Folsom. Otherwise, cool experience.

Unfortunately I am not on social media and that's where you're supposed to find it. Bummer! I decided to use my own password. It worked and we entered the inner sanctum. It was a cool, smallish place with nice decor. The bar was the first thing we saw. I looked around to see a few tables and couches to the left. It was pretty early and there were only a few people there so we got a cozy little table in front of a velvety couch. I went to the bar where a burly tattooed OG bartender greeted me. I ordered an old fashioned and a raspberry lemon drop. My old fashioned was done very well. I'm on an old fashioned kick right now and love to try them at different places that look like they know how to make them. This one was really good. My friend wasn't so keen on her lemon drop, saying the lavender was a bit overpowering. We had another round and this time she had something different that she enjoyed. My second old fashioned was just as good as the first. It was getting later and more people happened to have the password and it was getting crowded. We were done, paid the tab, which wasn't bad considering how most speakeasy's can be pretty pricy. Overall, it was a great experience, the place was nice, friendly, and the drinks were done well. Give it a shot. Find the password, or use your own if you dare!

We arrived with a 7:15 reservation, and our table wasn't ready for about 15 minutes. Since we needed to leave by 8:40 we asked before being seated whether there would be enough time to dine, and we were assured there would be. Once seated, we were again told timing would be fine as long as we ordered immediately, which we did. However, there was apparently a shortage of clean silverware available for about 20 minutes, and we didn't receive water until roughly 25 minutes after sitting down. We were also never served bread. We ordered beer and wine at the same time as our food order, shortly after being seated, but by 8:30 we still had not received drinks or any food. Concerned about making it home on time, we asked for the bill and our meals to be packed to go, but the food never arrived. The waiter eventually came to our table and ripped up the receipt. We ultimately left at 8:40 without ever receiving dinner or the drinks we ordered at the beginning of the meal. Many nearby tables appeared to be having similar experiences, and staff were managing multiple frustrated guests, along with tables that had not been served food or drinks, or orders that came out incorrectly. Again, the issue did not seem to be the waitstaff themselves, but the overall extreme delay in getting any drinks and food, which should not take over an hour. It seems they were underprepared and understaffed. I would not recommend for dinner or for any special occasions.

We each chose flights of wine to accompany our entrees. Despite including three wines per flight, the pours were fairly generous. Our dishes were perfectly prepared and came out more quickly than we expected, considering that the place was almost full. Our server checked back just enough and took care of any special requests promptly, even offering to exchange one of the wines (out of six!) that we didn't like for something better suited to our taste. The pace was leisurely which was fine given the good food and wine accompanied by the relaxed vibe of the live music.
